Deadly Class, Volume 7: Love Like Blood

Rate this book
Marcus and Maria have resurfaced, and with them a whole ocean of bad blood crashes on the shores. Shabnam and the Student Council are out to put Marcus and Maria in the grave for good this time, Saya’s maniacal brother Kenji stokes the flames of hatred, and in the shadows of those flames looms Headmaster Lin, waiting to reward whoever is left standing with a place by his side—or a sharp knife in the back. It’s 1989 and the era is drawing to a close, but it’s going to take as many poor bastards with it into oblivion as it can.

Somehow at seven volumes in this series manages to hit new heights! On the face of it this volume is about multiple antagonists catching up with our freshmen and sophomores and the carnage that ensues; yet with this as the 'story' the creative team brings multiple reveals, twists, lots of angst, and most of all character-led drama all wrapped up in the highly innovative and distinctive art of . I don't normally talk much about art in graphic novel reviews, because in my opinion there's not much for me to say, but Craig's daringly original technique is refreshing as it is also fitting for this sublime coming of age 1980s drama set around a school for assassins with a hugely authentic feeling diverse cast. READ THIS! An almost Five Star, 9.5 out of 12 for this one!
Check out the cover art for #32 (which is in this volume)!

There's a lot of stabbing and dying in this one, so I guess we'll see who's still standing at the end.
I can't say I'm really invested in any of these characters, unfortunately.

description

They aren't likable and they aren't supposed to be likable, I guess.
Remender has put a bunch of cliches in a Hogwarts for Ninja Assassins school, set it in the '80s, and cranked the violence up to 11. <--nothing wrong with that.
If that sounds like your bag, you're going to love Deadly Class.

This was good, but quite frankly, a bit exhausting to read. This volume is one long action sequence, as yakuza, corrupt Mexican cops, and Victor and Brandy close in on our heroes, resulting in one heck of an extended fight. The writing is good, the artwork is great. But I was seriously feeling tired by the end of this.

Rick has created one of the best ongoing series at IMAGE and Deadly Class keeps pushing.

If the last two volumes were a bit slow for you don't worry, Volume 7 says "LET'S GO!!!!" and action hits a all time high. We get a great internal monologue with a ton of characters, making fun of Frank Miller's writing (WOOT!), and some balls to the walls fight scenes that are out of this world awesome. I would love to tell you what happens but it's so much spoilers I hardly can. Let's just say the kids all split up, run for their lives, people, kids, everyone, WILL DIE. This is as action packed and insane as volume 3 and 4.

Good: The art is pure awesomeness. A step up, the action flows soooo smooth, and everything is brutal. The dialog is as wonderful as ever. Broken characters who are lost and savage characters who are pieces of shit. Plenty of surprises, a lot of deaths, maybe even a few tears will drop on this one. The ending sets up some interesting moments that will come.

Bad: Really? Nothing. Deadly Class is that comic that excels at action back brutality mixed with a great story.

I can't get over how good this series is. Coming from a goodish volume 1 to a extraordinary series that it has become, it's so nice to see. A 5 out of 5.

Whoa man! That was intense. Remender’s books are like roller coaster rides and this one is the one people are afraid to get on. The ups and downs can be heart wrenching and cycles 5 times in a single spread. He’s good man. I have trouble differentiating some of the character sometimes. And it moves back and forth between different characters so quickly and so often that I occasionally lose track. But those are minor complaints in the grand scheme. I was also gonna complain about the fact that for as many standoff’s as there are, main characters don’t really ever die, but remender came through with a good old fashioned murder before I finished the book so I’m shelving that complaint for now. 5 deadly stars.

Well that was shit.

The entire volume is comprised of one long running mass fight. Half a dozen half-trained, badly injured bickering high schoolers mow down literally dozens upon dozens of homicidal ninjas, while Remender's trademark tortured pseudophilosophical voiceover slow-rolls across the panels. Characters are repeatedly saved at the last second by lame contrivances.

Deadly Class v7 is like a textbook on How to Fail.

For some reason I thought when I ordered all the volumes it was a finished series, but it seems I've now got to wait for the next volume. Bummer, cause of course all these volumes end on cliffhangers. Anyway, I'm finally beginning to get into this series and am invested in the story. Can't wait for the next one.

Love Like Blood je v podstatě jedna dlouhá akční sekvence, Marcus & Maria proti zbytku světa...

Začínam si želať, aby táto séria nemala konca, lebo postavy ma stále neskutočne bavia, príbeh je stále zábavný a pútavý a bude mi naozaj ľúto, ak raz vezmem do ruky posledný diel.

Blood soaked finale to a long arc that just pulls you and does not let you go.

World: Wes Craig’s art is fantastic, it’s stunning and the framing for this arc is superb. This is an all action arc and this is where the arc really flexed it’s creative muscle and it was a joy to look at. The world building here is also well done. All those pieces that Remender has been building since vol 1 pretty much all comes smashing together for this arc and the two group of kids really an arc to tie them all together and it’s fantastic. The world is basic in depth in what it’s there to do is to give a platform for the chaos in the story.

Story: The story is unrelenting. It’s a non stop balls to the wall action from page one to the end. This is not a depth story, this is not a building story, this is a climax story. The pieces we’ve had with Victor and Marcus, with Petra and the past, with Saya and the Yakuza, it all comes down to this arc and that’s the story. It’s basic, it’s insane, it’s emo as all hell and the emotions are basic, large and raw, it’s what this series is. The character moments that do come and the consequences that come from this arc are great and really push this story forward toward the next chapter. It’s was an amazing read.

Characters: All the characters are here, all the main ones for this arc which has been building for a while. Marcus in the midst of all this chaos does have an arc, does have these emotions that come screaming out and that’s how the book as a whole as been dealing with characters and their emotions and it’s a beautiful and fun read. The story with all the kids and what happens with Saya, I am not going to get into any of it here, but if you like the super emo nature of this series, this is just more of it, with a lot of blood.

A action packed arc that grabs you and does not let go, it’s a quick read with a lot of loud angsty emotions.

Onward to the next book!

Bullet Review:

Bonus points from last volume: there are lots of explosions. Everything is better with explosions.

Bonus points for imitating Frank Miller's style.

Minus points for doing that and being pretentious.

Bonus points for someone who might actually be dead instead of deus ex machina'ing their way out of death.

Questions: How long can someone take to die from a stomach gunshot wound that they insist will kill them in a few minutes? Would they be able to keep up with 5 relatively uninjured people and somehow find them in a Mexican city (or is it a town)? Is it appropriate to be a mid 30 woman who is reading these panels with half naked jail bait running around with all these panty shots?

The last volume left us in dramatic cliffhanger territory. This one picks up immediately, and just races to the finish, with constant dramatic action and arc resolution. This one is ALL CLIMAX and it's such a great ride. Deadly Class is, and remains, the shit. Some incredible moments in here, truly. I can't wait to see where the series goes now.

The art team is killing it (sometimes literally)! Remender keeps on dialling up the ante on the soap-opera elements of the series while the violence escalates in tandem. Stylish, great looking comic.

Solid arc, Rick Remender is great at contrasting the highs and lows with some of the worst moments for the characters coming right after their best moments. However, this is a series that pulls a little too many punches. Nearly every main character has been “killed but survives.

I own this book.

Dude...We're getting the gang back together. When the "peaceful" holiday Marcus and Maria were on is interrupted by Petra and the freshmen from Kings Dominion ends with the Yakuza gang finding them and wanting Marcus alive, everything goes to well...shit. Viktor is there and also wants Marcus, but wants him dead. The Mexican police are also after them. Really, everyone is killing everyone and nobody is sure who to trust. When they have to split up, Marcus finds himself having to work with Viktor to escape on the promise that when they are safe, one of them will die at the other's hands. Marcus finds out the truth about what Petra did to Billy (which honestly broke my heart a little because he assumed he was still alive). I love this series so much in all of it's ugly gritty roughness. I wonder what is going to happen next now that the group seem to be on uneven ground with one another. I'm honestly rooting for Marcus and Maria to stay together this time though.

‘’Think about the most important person in your life.
Think about what you’d do to anyone who hurt them.
You’d be amazed what it’ll get you through.
An army of Yakuza at least.’

Might just be my favourite volume so far! Epic fight, whole lot of craziness and I finally warmed up to the new kids.

Also, might be alone in this, but Marcus and Maria??? My absolute babies. Love them separately, love them together, they're so much fun to read.

‘’The only thing that matters.
Get out of here. Find her.
With her, I’m normal
The bad voice goes quiet.
Able to love someone.
Really feel it.
To share an honest connection built on a deep and spiritual identification.
Without her
There is no me without her.’

I mean, come on, just too good. And this is Deadly Class so I know I can expect... not so great prospects, but I'll just enjoy them being cute in the middle of the chaos while I can.

Damn
will something bad ever happen to the villains?
there was a lot of death in this book, but not the death i was expecting.
i enjoyed being back in marcus monologue. i hadn’t realized it was something i was missing until now.
i wish we got to spend more time with saya, but i’m sure that plot line will come into play soon.

Deadly Class improves with each new issue. ‘Love Like Blood was a whirlwind of body parts, drama, vengeance, and pain. I didn’t think anything could have topped the previous volume, but here I am eating my words.

What an action-packed arc! The plot is progressing wonderfully amidst all the chaos (and could there be an endgame in sight?). It certainly felt like this particular volume was the culmination of many past story arcs converging. The tides are changing, and I’m eager to see where it all goes from here. I have to add that I was especially sad to see .

You just never know what to expect... especially when you’re dealing with a bunch of trained killers from an elite school for assassins and criminals.

A good volume but personally Deadly Class is getting tired. This is one big battle of a volume and lots and lots of fighting between well... lots of people. Between all the warring factions and drama between all the kids its all getting muddled to me and I sort of stop caring when everyone has back stabbed everyone else. Rememder is a great author, one of my favs, but even his deep psychological insights gets tiresome after 7 volumes.

The thing that bothers me the most with deadly class now is how there is always someone in the shadows either to stop a murder or to commit one, seriously its getting silly and overused.

SPOLIERS below

Petra gets killed by Brandy.... do I care...not really. Marcus and Victor fight and Marcus has the chance to do it but doesn't and instead has a heart to heart....

This series has been hit and miss for me but unfortunately this is one of the misses. It pretty much has the pedal to the metal the whole time and is exhausting to get through. Typically this series works for me when the characters are able to shine and work together/against each other. This one didn't really bring anything new but just threw everyone in a blender and let them all go at each other.

(Zero spoiler review for the deluxe edition collecting this volume) 3.5/5
I've really been enjoying this series, having consumed all three available library editions in the last month or so. And despite this being the weakest collection of the three, I still enjoyed spending time in this world with these characters. It's become quite clear Remender has a formula that he is repeating throughout this series. But hey, if it works, why not run with it. It's just that his formula is starting to wear ever so slightly thin here, with a protracted, somewhat boring opening, at least in my opinion anyway, taking a while to settle back into the ongoing deadly drama that initially hooked me into this series. That said, the good bits that make up the middle section of this book don't last anywhere near as long as they did on previous volumes. And it isn't so long before the final arc returns to the bland and uninspired action that is getting just a little bit stale. It doesn't help that it is probably the dumbest story arc of the entire series. Taking a character I rather liked and doing something wholly ridiculous and disappointing. That and Wes Craig's art seems noticeably weaker, sloppier here throughout the entire duration of these arcs. The art had absolutely been the highlight of this series for me, despite Remender turning in his best work I've read thus far, but this really looks like he was half assing it. Whether he was burnt out, or was busy working on other material with deadlines looming, I don't know. All I know is, this is some fairly sloppy and uninspired art, at least when compared to what came before.
All in all, still a solid enjoyable collection, but undoubtedly the weakest of the three. Hopefully everyone involved can find their mojo in time to end this series on a high, because if it all descends into a bland and disappointing affair, it would spoil one of the better indie series I've had the privilege of reading. Still worth a look though. 3.5/5

Ponowne spotkania prowadzą do bezlitosnych konfrontacji, a te przyjmują nieoczekiwany obrót.

Right out the gate Deadly Class volume 7 is a nonstop piece where it goes action to more action and every bit of it matters.

All the ultra violence, the angst, and even the only moment of alleviation you get only at the very end.

Split the pint of view between two parties.

Says who’s the damn star of this thing I my mind. And Marcus and his party as the run from assassins out for Marcus but they don’t mind some extra blood.

Says goes head to head with her brother and Marcus takes on Viktor.

It’s so well drawn. I love the style of Deadly Class.

This was another good volume and Ill be picking up the next one. Maybe sooner because the gap of time between when I read volume 6 to volume 7 did me no favors.

4 stars.

Good book. BUT there's one art problem that REALLY bothers me. During a fight scene one character's face is very prominent in 5 of 8 panels on one page. He has blood running down his face and the pattern is noticeably, extremely different across all the panels. And not different like he bled more between panels. The blood covers different parts of his face in every shot. ALL ON THE SAME PAGE. Regardless, I mostly like the art in this book. And the story. And the characters. Despite the fact that I would not like any of them in real life, even if they weren't murderers and whatnot.
