Everyone knows the legend of Fairport Village: twenty-five years ago, a shocking murder closed the place down. This year, the ruins will be bulldozed at last. But tonight, it's not too late to die.

All her life, Eden Stafford has heard the lore about the abandoned beach resort at the edge of town: ever since the notorious murder there, anyone who sets foot on the property is cursed to die, It's more than just a story: over the years, two high school students who dared to explore the ruins of Fairport Village were killed there.

Eden is no stranger to notoriety, having endured a family scandal that's made her a target at school. So when she reluctantly attends an overnight party at the ruins, she's on edge―not because of some legend, but because the clique that has made her life hell for years is there, too, including Caleb Durham, the worst of them all.

Yet out of all the things Eden expected to happen that night, finding another student dead at Fairport Village wasn't one of them.

Though the death is ruled an accident, Eden knows she saw something suspicious at the ruins―and Caleb and her other longtime tormentors did too. Now they're all being followed by a deadly stranger, and to save themselves, they must work together to uncover the truth about Fairport Village. But after all that's happened, can Eden really trust Caleb and his friends? Or will they leave her to face a killer alone?

4 stars! Huge thanks to Tantor Audio and NetGalley for the ALC! 💌

We Were Warned by Chelsea Ichaso is a gripping YA thriller that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! 😱 Let me just say, this book was a RIDE from start to finish. The spooky vibes, the suspense, and the constant feeling of "WTF is happening next?" made it impossible to put down. 🔪💀

Here’s the scoop: Eden Stafford, our brave (and a little skeptical) heroine, is thrust into a chilling overnight party at the infamous Fairport Village—a place haunted by a legend and two unsolved murders. The legend? Anyone who dares to visit Fairport is cursed. Yep, that’s exactly where Eden ends up. And surprise, surprise, another student is found dead. 😳

Now, Eden’s forced to team up with her ex-friends, including the hot and mysterious Caleb Durham. These people used to torment her, but now they’re her only hope of surviving this creepy mess. Can she trust them? Or will they leave her to face a killer alone? 🤔

I loved Eden’s character. She’s strong, smart, and not afraid to face danger head-on. But let's not forget Caleb... is he a good guy, or is he hiding something? 😏

The atmosphere in this book? Creeptastic! It’s like you can practically feel the cold, abandoned beach resort lurking behind every corner. Plus, there's this perfect balance of mystery, teenage drama, and a bit of that eerie paranormal element that keeps you guessing. 👀 Is the killer human? Is it a ghost? The twists and turns will leave you second-guessing everything you think you know.

The mystery unfolds nicely, and even though I guessed a few things along the way, the twists at the end were still mind-blowing. Like, I did not see that coming. 😵

Now, let’s talk about the narration! Jennifer Jill Araya did an incredible job bringing the tension and suspense of this story to life. She perfectly captured the eerie vibes of the setting and really nailed the emotions of the characters. From Eden’s inner struggles to the creepy atmosphere, Jennifer’s voice made everything feel even more immersive and intense. 👏

If you're into:
Creepy small towns 🏚
Mysterious deaths 🔪
Friends to enemies to maybe lovers 👀
Spooky legends 🧟‍♂
YA thrillers that keep you on your toes 👣

Then We Were Warned is totally your next read! It’s a page-turner that’ll keep you hooked until the last twisty sentence. 🔄

Guess what? I finally LOVED a YA novel!!! Yay for me!!!

I was gripped to this story right from the start. From there, it never lets up!

Twenty years ago a shocking murder occurred at the Fairport Village by an evil woman known as Mrs. Blackmore. Now, a group of high school students decide to do an overnight stay out at the ruins of Fairport Village. Why? They say that the land is cursed ever since another murder occurred years later.

Man, I was really into this book! It had all the right vibes for a horror story. The eerie setting and foreshadowing had just the right touches.

Read this if you love Final Destination, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream

ARC for review. To be published March 4, 2025.

3 YA stars.

Twenty years ago there was a shocking murder in Fairport Village which closed the mansion down (which mansion? THE mansion. Every small town in a thriller has one. You know this.) However kids have continued to party in the ruins because…well, if there’s a place, kids are going to go there to drink beer, smoke dope and have sex.not that _I_ ever did any of those things, of course. Pure as the snow, was I! But I digress.

Now two of the kids have been killed, leaders no to talk of a curse. And today Eden Stafford, a pariah of the high school is working on a documentary with another student when, again, tragedy strikes. Can Eden and her enemies figure out what is happening?

This is YA for YAs, definitely and I’ve rated it as such. It’s not bad from that standard, but not the greatest, either.

Everyone knows the legend of Fairpoint Village, an abandoned beach resort. 25-years ago, a murder closed the place down and soon the ruins will be demolished for good.

Eden has heard the lore about Fairpoint all her life. They say anyone who sets foot there will be cursed to die, and that has happened a couple of times over the years, when students daring to explore the ruins where killed.

Before the scheduled demo can take place, an overnight party is planned for the ruins. Eden reluctantly attends to assist her friend, Henry, with doing some filming.

She's nervous about going, more because of the other kids that will be there as opposed to the lore of the ruins. Since Eden's Dad ditched town after taking part in a little white-collar crime, she's sort of been a social pariah.

Most concerning to her is being anywhere near her ex-best friend, Caleb. They were so close as kids, but since Freshman year, Caleb has barely given her the time of day.

Unfortunately, the party night takes a horrifying turn and now more kids are dying. Is it the haunting of the ruins, or something much closer to home, that is now stalking these teens and trying to take them out one-by-one?

The 1st-book I read from this author, , was only 2-stars for me and I was hesitant to pick up anything from Ichaso after that. However, when I read the synopsis for this one, I knew I had to give it a shot.

I'm so happy to report that We Were Warned ended up being a a very solid 4-star read for me. I can't even tell you how excited I was to be gripped by this one from the start.

It kept me entertained and guessing throughout. I thought the pace was great and I loved the character dynamics. There was a lot of drama, both with the kids and their parents, and I'm always down for that.

My favorite aspects were the mysterious lore of this town and watching Eden have to work together with a group of kids who didn't necessarily start out as her friends.

I thought Ichaso did a wonderful job with the characters, particularly with Eden and Caleb. Their relationship was complicated from the start, and I felt like all of their interactions felt realistic. The way that relationship changed throughout the book, also made sense and felt organic.

Additionally, I really enjoyed Eden's growth as a character. The way she started to come out of her shell and started to assert herself more with her peers as she gained confidence.

I did enjoy the conclusion as well, although certain aspects started to get a little muddled towards the end. Overall, I thought it was very well-executed.

Thank you, Tantor Audio, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I would highly recommend the audio format. The narration by Jennifer Jill Araya was fantastic!

We Were Warned was an excellent read with an intriguing mystery surrounding an abandoned beach resort.

Eden Stafford has heard about the legend of Fairport Village all of her life and how anyone who sets foot on the property is cursed to die. But then Eden finds herself agreeing to help a film student with a project about the legend and that means going to the resort. After a student is found dead on the property and the police rule the death an accident, Eden knows she saw something suspicious at the ruins. But the only other people who agree with her are the people who have made her life hell for years. Can Eden really trust that they'll help her find the truth?

We Were Warned opens with Eden arriving at Fairport Village to help Henry De Rossi with his documentary about the legend of the resort. Before the end of the night a student from the high school is found dead on the property and Eden is sure the death isn't an accident like the police say it is. The premise of this one sounded like so much fun and I was curious to see how the whole curse thing would end up playing out. Eden ends up having to work with the group of students that have been tormenting her for years to find the truth as they were with her when something strange happened before the discovery of the body.

The students Eden is working with are Caleb Durham, Jameson O'Sullivan, Diego Rodriguez, and Victoria Whitlock. Initially she doesn't trust them at all and has a hard time agreeing to work with them to figure out what happened. After someone else dies, the group becomes worried they could be targeted next and they put aside their differences to figure out what happened at Fairport Village. At this point I had a few ideas of who was behind the deaths of the students and I was interested to see how Eden and the others would figure out who was responsible. The suspense picks up as the book goes on and the ending where the group confronts the person responsible is fantastically done. I was surprised by who ended up being behind everything and I was happy with how the situation played out.

Overall We Were Warned was a great read and I would highly recommend it if you're looking for an interesting mystery.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy!

I loved Chelsea Ichaso’s release from last year and I excited when I saw she was releasing another book this year. Unfortunately this one I didn’t enjoy as much as the previous.
I’m not sure what exactly didn’t work for me. There were a lot of characters and dynamics you are introduced too and trying to navigate that as well as the mystery right away just didn’t flow or work. A lot of elements felt unfinished at times and not flushed out. Although this didn’t work for me, I am excited for whatever this author does next! I will always love YA thriller/mystery!

Thanks again to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy!

I'm extremely grateful to Tantor Audio for sending me the ALC through NetGalley!!!

Okayy, it might sound like I'm overreacting but trust me when I say that I haven't read a thriller this fast in ages!! I literally listened to the audiobook in two sittings & when I wasn't reading it the previous day, all I could think about was getting back to the Fairport Village and the lore in here to find out what was really happening!!!!

To back it up, we follow Eden Stafford who accompanies the film club student, Henry & the entire senior year of high school to spend the overnight in the creepiest resort in their small town, Fairport Village. Henry plans to capture the place as part of his documentary in which he wants to explain the lore and the deaths behind the place, and Eden acts as his filming assistant. It's said that anyone who sets foot in the resort is cursed & will face their death very soon. And when one of their students dies, everyone panics that they're cursed as well and Eden is dead set on finding out what's really happening & also to find a way to save themselves.

What can you expect
👻 a fast paced YA thriller
👻creepy resort in a small town that's surrounded by a lot of deaths
👻atmospheric with eerie vibes
👻supernatural elements in play
👻engaging mystery that keeps you on your toes
👻reluctant allies
👻childhood friends to enemies to allies to lovers?!

The resort and the lore surrounding it was creepy from the start, and the way the story is told to you sends shivers down your spine (trust me, listen to this on audio & you'll get what I mean)...I even had to stop at the halfway point on the first day cuz I cannot bear to listen to it at night🥶🥶 This unsettling vibe persists throughout the novel and keeps you on edge as well, and I was also amazed at the way the author was able to grasp my interest from the start till the finish line!!! And the chapters end in cliffhangers too making it so hard to put it down unless you don't want the answers immediately which will never be the case in this book cuz YOU WOULD WANT THE ANSWERS OR THE SUSPENSE WILL DRIVE YOU MAD!!

The characters were well-written & rounded too & extremely relatable if you think about the time when you were a teenager. They're not perfect in any opinion cuz who in their high school was?!! And that's what I loved about them cuz they were written realistically - flawed, whiny at times, jealous, but also incredibly headstrong when it comes to getting answers or doing things they're warned not to do!!! And Eden definitely has captured my heart by being strong & persistent throughout the novel by going after the mystery to find out whether the killer was a supernatural entity or a real person. She never stops even when faced with threats cuz she wants to find the truth about what caused the death of the person she trusted, and I liked this tenacious quality of her.

And I gotta admit I wasn't a fan of Victoria & Jameson at the start but they really redeemed themselves in the end imo & I did like this reluctant gang of mystery solving teenagers!!

And I gotta applaud Jennifer Jill Araya for bringing life into the story through her narration!!! The characters' pauses, tension, fear, mockery, & everything was perfectly executed by her and it was like I was compelled to keep listening to the audiobook bcoz of her wonderful narration. I gotta admit that I'm gonna be checking out more audiobooks narrated by her.

Overall, if you're looking for a YA thriller that has both supernatural & mystery combined with an incredible FMC & an amazing audiobook, you have to check this out!

All I want in a YA thriller is for the mystery to be fun and this book delivered! Though the writing was a bit clunky at times (a bit confusing or it felt out of character slightly) I still had a fun time trying to figure out who was behind it all!

I was also quite surprised (in the best way!) to see the author didn't shy away from having real big stakes, I felt the characters were truly in danger.

I'll look at the author's other books 👀

We Were Warned pulls you in with its mix of mystery and horror. I loved how the legend surrounding Fairport Village wasn’t just a backstory, but an integral part of the plot that kept the tension high throughout. Ichaso really knows how to weave suspense into every scene, especially with the eerie atmosphere around the cursed land.

Eden’s perspective on everything—her struggles with being an outsider, her complicated feelings about her companions, and the mystery surrounding the deaths—keeps things grounded in reality, even as the horror ramps up. Watching her try to navigate her past while dealing with a present danger was captivating. The twisty relationships between Eden and the others, especially Caleb, really brought an extra layer to the story. I wasn’t expecting to care about these characters as much as I did, but Ichaso makes you question everything you think you know about them. The ending left me shocked, which is always a good sign when reading thrillers!

Ichaso continues to show her strength in blending horror with emotional depth, and I’m eager to see what she’ll come up with next. If you’re into atmospheric YA thrillers with dark twists, this is definitely worth picking up!

Thank you to the publisher for an advanced readers copy of this book.

The plot and the concept were both really good and I did enjoy it. However the characters were where this book struggled. I didn't connect with any of them, most of the times I was just frustrated at their choices since they all seemed to be lacking some common sense with the decisions they made. I will say tho the romance was pretty cute and I didn't hate it but it just wasnt enough to get me to like the characters.

Like I mentioned the plot is good, I couldn't tell who/what was responsible during the book which was good.

I really like the audiobook narrator they did a very good job with the book.

An abandoned beach resort with a string of murders has a deep town lore. But when teens from the senior class start dying, again, the group gets together to stop the murders before anyone dies.

This was a highly entertaining slasher. I liked our main character and her love interest. Their drama was a nice distraction from the mystery and I liked the red herrings and distractions thrown in. It was a fast read, one that kept me wanting to know more. And I just love the cover.

Thank you to the publishers and netgalley for approving me to read this book. I’m rating 4.0 stars.

There’s just something about YA mystery/thriller that is too good, I started this book and couldn’t stop devouring the pages.

I will say some aspects of the story were predictable, but this lured you into thinking you know more than you actually do. This is a multilayered mystery with clues to follow and a tragic past to dig up. There’s some strong friendship connections and wrongs to right relating to these friends, I also liked the sideline romance that was developing while everyone was scared for their lives.

This was my first read by author Chelsea Ichaso, and being a YA book, outside my usual genre. I really enjoyed the dimensions in this story, past/present, enemies to crush, finding the truth, etc. The story definitely had multiple aspects that would translate well on the big screen! The pacing was on point and with enough suspense to keep the reader wanting more. I highly recommend this to those that enjoy YA without any restrictions. We Were Warned by Chelsea Ichaso is an intense and creepy atmospheric read! A YA thriller that definitely had me hooked!

Twenty years ago a murder shut down Fairpoint Village, a little beach resort town. Since then the property has been abandoned and rumored to be haunted. Now when Eden decides to help a classmate film a documentary about Fairpoint Village, the senior party falls on the same night. But instead of fun times and shooting scenes for the documentary, a classmate of Edens ends up dead. While the police are quick to call it an accident and close the case, Eden knows there's much more to it than that. Can Eden and a group of her former friends figure out the truth of what really happened that night, or will Eden be left alone to chase a killer by herself?

This was such a creepy but well written book! I absolutely found it impossible to put down. I really liked the sense of unease and dread that was prevalent throughout the entire novel. Filled with tension and twists this is definitely a YA thriller book that I highly recommend!

We Were Warned by Chelsea Ichaso is a thriller about deaths at an abandoned village.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Sourcebooks, and the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
The grounds of Fairport Village have seen death. In the 1800's, a plague struck the area. Years later, the area was built up. Twenty-five years ago, Nicolas Blackmore was murdered, apparently by his deranged mother, although she never admitted it, nor was the weapon found. Before killing herself, she cursed anyone that would trespass on the land. It is said she haunts the Village, which has become a ruin with recent plans to be bulldozed.

Ten years ago, Fairport high senior class held the first over-nighter on the grounds of the ruins. Farah Palmer did not survive that night. Two years ago, Esther Lamb was dead on the site. There was a note attached to her body that said that "they had been warned".

Eden Stafford is working with Henry De Rossi on a documentary about Fairport Village before the ruins are bulldozed. Although she doesn't really want to be there, she needs the money Henry promised. The pair soon realize that another over-nighter of kids from school are there, among them the bullies that have made Eden the butt of their jokes since her father had cheated a number of co-owners of a cleaning company, and then run away.

But when another body is found dead on the site, police rule it as a suicide. Eden and her group of tormenters know this isn't true, and they will have to work together to find the murderer, because they are being watched. But Eden doesn't know who to trust.

My Opinions:
Yes, this is definitely aimed at the YA crowd, sappy teenaged romance and all. But the story was still good.

The premise of the story was very good. It was very atmospheric, very creepy.

The characters could have been a little deeper, their backgrounds were a little under-developed. I did like both Eden and Caleb, but the others were somewhat shallow (both in the writing, and their personality).

Even though it has been many decades since I have been a member of the YA crowd, I still read quite a number of books aimed at those readers, and I try to rate them fairly. This was a fast and entertaining read.

Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebook Fire for letting me read and review this arc.

Trigger warnings: bullying, murder, assault, stalking, suicide.

Fairport village, where twenty years ago a murder closed the place down. The place was cursed and since then two more people have died there. Now the village is supposed to be bulldozed and before that the seniors wants to throw a party. Finding a dead student wasn´t supposed to happen...

This YA murder mystery has a village, a curse, high school "detectives", a little love, a lot of hate, and a bit of sadness. I really enjoyed reading this book and would never have guessed the outcome. However, I found some parts of the plot were left unfinished and untold.

I rated this book 3 stars.

Suspenseful and spooky. The setting was perfection! I was glued to the pages and could not wait to see how the plot played out. I was left hanging because I got 90% of the way through and then had to do adult things and I just couldn't stop thinking about this book and what happened. I really enjoyed getting into this story and felt fully immersed. Don't let the "young adult" fool you, this one is creepy!

Chelsea Ichaso keeps upping her game with each new release.

Teens today trying to solve a decades old murder is not a new idea. The way Ichaso develops unique characters with complex backstories combined with an interesting mystery, a number of plausible suspects and a killer/killers I never expected kept me on the edge of my seat guessing.

Ichaso’s word-building is more clever with each book. She’s an automatic preorder for me.

The narration was outstanding with so many different voices, both male and female, young and older, sounding unique and authentic.

Eden Stafford is ready to enter her Senior year of high school, but before school starts, she finds herself at Fairport Village, the creepy ruins on the outskirts of town. Fairport Village is known for a murder that happened twenty years ago, but it’s become the spot for upcoming Seniors overnight party, even though two other students have been murdered there in the past. When Henry, the student Eden is helping film at the ruins, becomes the newest victim, she must work with a group of fellow students that used to be her friends, but became her tormentors following a scandal involving her father, to find out what is happening at Fairport Village.

We Were Warned is a fast-paced, YA thriller with just the right amount of suspense and twists. Ichaso’s writing is very straightforward and it was easy to follow the story. I really enjoyed the whole setting of the book…a spooky deserted tourist area, unexplained murders, stereotypical high school students, and a supernatural feel to the mystery.

Eden was a strong main character, and I enjoyed having the story told from her POV. She has been ostracized from her group of childhood friends, because of a business deal gone bad with her father and his partners. Unfortunately, she now has to trust her ex-friends, as they investigate the murders, while protecting one another from becoming the next victim. I also enjoyed the love interest story line, with Eden’s former friend Caleb, and not knowing if he was 100% trust-worthy during the story.

The mystery in the story develops really well. I did figure out the murderer earlier in the book, but there were some other surprising twists that I didn’t expect, revealed at the end of the book. I also loved the creepy, paranormal feel that Ichaso brings to the book, and not knowing if the murders are being committed by a person or supernatural forces. The ending of the book is also the perfect wrap up, that connects what happened 20 years ago with the family that lived at Fairport Village with the present day story line.

I definitely recommend We Were Warned if you love creepy small towns, untrustworthy characters, a suspenseful atmosphere, and teenagers who have to work together to solve a town mystery.

Thank you to Sourcebooks Fire and NetGalley for providing me with an ebook copy of We Were Warned, in return for my honest review.

This one was not for me. It was okay. Not terrible, but also not great. Just okay.

I really wanted to like it more than I did. I really TRIED to like it. But honestly, it just wasn’t as compelling as I would have hoped. I think the way it was written was just lacking to me. The plot was fine. The characters were okay. But everything just felt so drab. I wanted more out of it.

Honestly, if this wasn’t an ARC, I would have DNFed in the middle of it. But I did stick it out and I did not see the ending coming. So at least there’s that.

The narration was very well done though!

Thank you to NetGalley for this audiobook ARC.

➡️ ɢʀᴀʙ ɪ ʏᴏᴜ:
° Live for high school murder thrillers with a ragtag crew of teen investigators
° Love a good twist (or two) you actually don’t see coming
° Can’t get enough of enemies - to - allies - to - something - more
° Can only enjoy slow-burn suspense if it has super high tension throughout

➡️ ɪ' ᴀʙᴏᴜ:
Eden’s life is already a mess thanks to a family scandal—but when she agrees to attend a party at the haunted ruins of Fairport Village, things go from uncomfortable to deadly real fast. When one of the teens ends up dead, Eden and the others who were there are pulled into a tense unraveling of secrets, urban legends, and a stalker that wants to keep the truth buried. Add in Caleb—the guy who betrayed her—and the only way out might be the last person she’d ever trust.

I read a LOT of YA thrillers, and the author is an artist at keeping the tension and suspense high even during moments where the plot slows down, making the pacing feel like it's on constant motion. The scenes were so dang creepy and suspenseful! The plot truly felt like it unfolded naturally, revealing layer by layer like an onion (with fewer tears, more gasp-out-loud moments). There were lots of moving parts, yet it somehow never felt overwhelming nor convoluted.

And the twist? I didn’t see it coming, not even close. I was a big fan of the messy, lovable crew, and LOVED Eden and Caleb’s chemistry. I would say this one’s for readers who’ve dipped their toes into thrillers and are ready for the next level.

What a fun read! This kept me on my toes the whole time - the spooky tone was an excellent backdrop to this story. Abandonment deceit beach resort with a dark history of several murders. We’re talking dark nights exploring ruins and creepy figures, stalking and a who’s next feeling. The tension and suspense had me desperate to know what was going on and made it hard to put down!

We’ve given the perfect blend of mystery, teen drama and eerie town legend that lends a supernatural element to the story. I loved the legend of Mrs Blackmore and getting to slowly uncover what happened all those years ago. I was never quite sure who to trust and who was hiding something 👀 and the teen drama was fun. I loved that Eden is forced to team up with her childhood tormentors and ex-friends as it made for some fraught and entertaining moments. Their history was easy to digest and developed well. I liked how the parents history played into it and bleed into Eden’s friendships. Not to mention the cute nemesis and sweet romance. Overall I really liked the cast of characters and the role they all played.

The mystery was really well done and the reveals brought everything together so well and left me gasping. The tension was present throughout and the stakes were set high from the beginning. The abandoned decaying beach resort was a fantastic setting and I loved the slow uncovering of the secrets of the past and how it all clicked together. The ending was very satisfying and that epilogue!!

Another great additive YA thriller from Chelsea that I won’t forget!
