I don’t usually read YA but the title caught my attention and it made me want to give this book a chance. I’m so glad I did…this book was wonderful! Virginia is such a likeable character. She’s funny, loyal to her friends, and a good student. But the story has a serious side to it too since it deals with issues such as date rape, bullying, eating disorders, and cutting (self-mutilation). Hopefully, teens who read this book and who can identify with the main character will come away with the message that is conveyed: No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

Virginia is an overweight tenth grade high school student. Like all teenage girls she wishes she was thinner and she wishes she could have a boyfriend who loves and accepts her. And it’s not always easy for her to have parents and siblings who are overachievers. Virginia gets teased a lot and sometimes they make her feel like she doesn’t fit in with the rest of the family. Because of this, she overeats constantly. Food is the ultimate comfort…whenever she is lonely or depressed, food cheers her up. When the family is faced with a serious ordeal that threatens their positive public image, it becomes a wake-up call for Virginia. For the first time in her life, she sees clearly that her parents and siblings are not the perfect people she thought they were. This inspires Virginia to start taking care of herself and she vows never to let anyone walk all over her again.

At first, I didn't like the character, Holly Golightly. I felt she was brash and a little too forward and I didn't like how she manipulated men to get what she wanted. But then as I read more and learned a little bit about her rough childhood, it became clearer why she was the way she was. It's not that I felt sorry for her but I think I understood her better. I enjoyed this book and now I can't wait to see the movie. I've had the movie in my possession for a while but I put off watching it until I read the book. I hope it's as good as the book.

Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

When the Curiosity Rover landed on Mars, it inspired me to want to read a book that had a theme about the Red Planet so I decided the best choice was to pick The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. This book contains a collection of short stories about people from Earth coming to Mars and colonizing it. Unfortunately, I was disappointed after reading it and found that most of the stories were dull and boring. I’d like to mention though that I did enjoy one…it was called, The Silent Towns, and it appeared somewhere towards the middle/end of the book. Bottom line: It looks like I will have to continue my search for another book about the Red Planet.

I was going to give this book a low rating but I found that Charlie’s perspective of his family and its dynamics to be profound and his understanding that things change and life doesn’t stop for anybody to be a mature and wise view for someone as young as him. I give this book an average rating of three stars.

Charlie just lost his friend Michael who committed suicide. He is having a tough time with it because he misses him a lot and he feels like such an emotional mess. To make matters worse, Charlie is starting his freshman year in high school. Although he does well in school academically, he is socially awkward and doesn’t make friends easily so the thought of starting high school scares him. His parents are worried about him so they send him to a psychiatrist where Charlie talks about how feels and what he thinks about. It is suggested to him that he try to attend social events. Charlie takes the advice and it is at the high school football game where he becomes friends with Patrick, a senior, and Patrick’s stepsister, Sam, whom he develops a crush on. His new friends eventually invite him into their “click� and Charlie starts hanging out with this group. They go to parties, smoke pot, and act out scenes at the Rocky Horror Picture Show. They consider Charlie to be a wallflower but the group likes him anyways because he keeps quiet about some of the things he sees that he isn’t suppose to and they feel like they can trust him. He also becomes close with a teacher named Bill, who serves as both a mentor and a friend to Charlie. Despite all of this, Charlie harbors some painful memories from his childhood and they eventually come to the surface as he tries to deal with the stress of maneuvering through his first year of high school.

Of course, Mr. Kapasi has no cure for what ails Mrs. Das--or himself. Lahiri's subtle, bittersweet ending is characteristic of the collection as a whole.
