Imprisoned by the very monsters he vowed to destroy, the last silversaint is forced to tell his story. A story of legendary battles and forbidden love, of faith lost and friendships won, of the Wars of the Blood and the Forever King and the quest for humanity’s last remaining hope:

<![CDATA[All in Her Head: The Truth and Lies Early Medicine Taught Us About Women's Bodies and Why It Matters Today]]> 158649729 The fascinating history of women’s health as it’s never been told before.

For as long as medicine has been a practice, women's bodies have been treated like objects to be practiced on: examined and ignored, idealized and sexualized, shamed, subjugated, mutilated, and dismissed. The history of women’s healthcare is a story in which women themselves have too often been voiceless—a narrative instead written from the perspective of men who styled themselves as authorities on the female of the species, yet uninformed by women’s own voices, thoughts, fears, pain and experiences. The result is a cultural and societal legacy that continues to shape the (mis)treatment and care of women.

While the modern age has seen significant advancements in the medical field, the notion that female bodies are flawed inversions of the male ideal lingers on—as do the pervasive societal stigmas and lingering ignorance that shape women’s health and relationships with their own bodies.

Memorial Sloan Kettering oncologist and medical historian Dr. Elizabeth Comen peels back the curtain on the collective medical history of women to reintroduce us to our whole bodies—how they work, the actual doctors and patients whose perspectives and experiences laid the foundation for today’s medical thought, and the many oversights that still remain unaddressed. With a physician’s knowledge and empathy, Dr. Comen follows the road map of the eleven organ systems to share unique and untold stories, drawing upon medical texts and journals, interviews with expert physicians, as well as her own experience treating thousands of women.

Empowering women to better understand ourselves and advocate for care that prioritizes healthy and joyful lives—for us and generations to comeAll in Her Head is written with humor, wisdom, and deep scientific and cultural insight. Eye-opening, sometimes enraging, yet always captivating, this shared memoir of women’s medical history is an essential contribution to a holistic understanding and much-needed reclaiming of women’s history and bodies.]]>

The Princess Bride 21787
As a boy, William Goldman claims, he loved to hear his father read the S. Morgenstern classic, The Princess Bride. But as a grown-up he discovered that the boring parts were left out of good old Dad's recitation, and only the "good parts" reached his ears.

Now Goldman does Dad one better. He's reconstructed the "Good Parts Version" to delight wise kids and wide-eyed grownups everywhere.

What's it about? Fencing. Fighting. True Love. Strong Hate. Harsh Revenge. A Few Giants. Lots of Bad Men. Lots of Good Men. Five or Six Beautiful Women. Beasties Monstrous and Gentle. Some Swell Escapes and Captures. Death, Lies, Truth, Miracles, and a Little Sex.

<![CDATA[Be a Triangle: How I Went from Being Lost to Getting My Life into Shape]]> 58840558
“I love Lilly’s honest and helpful advice about achieving happiness.”—Mindy Kaling, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Why Not Me?

“It’s time to flip right side up. It’s time for this book title to make sense. It’s time to be a triangle.

Everyone—even world-famous actress, author, and creator Lilly Singh—knows that sometimes life just sucks. In this book, Singh provides a safe space where readers can learn how to create a sense of peace within themselves. Without sugarcoating what it’s like to face adversity—including acknowledging her own intensely personal struggles with identity, success, and self-doubt—Singh teaches readers to “unsubscribe from cookie-cutter ideals.

With her signature blend of vulnerability, insight, and humor, Singh instructs readers to “be a triangle, creating a solid foundation for your life, one that can be built upon, but never fundamentally changed or destroyed. As she puts it, we must always find a way to come home to “we must create a place, a system of beliefs, a simple set of priorities to come back to should life lead us astray, which it definitely will.

Like a wise, empathetic friend who always keeps you honest, Singh pushes you to adjust your mindset and change your internal dialogue. The result is a deeply humane, entertaining, and uplifting guide to befriending yourself and becoming a true “miracle for the world.”]]>

<![CDATA[These Violent Delights (These Violent Delights, #1)]]> 50892212
A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal.

But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

Perfect for fans of The Last Magician and Descendant of the Crane, this heart-stopping debut is an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai, with rival gangs and a monster in the depths of the Huangpu River.]]>

<![CDATA[The Heir (The Royal Three Trilogy #1)]]> 59690709 With complex characters, political intrigue and shocking twists, this gender-bent Hades & Persephone re-imagining will keep you guessing until the very end.

Three rulers. Two sides. One plot for revenge. Welcome to the Kingdom of Lavdia.

In a village all but forgotten by the country’s rulers, Finn leads two lives. One of a simple country doctor, and the other of a smuggler with cargo of a rare variety: Wielders, a nearly extinct race of people born with the ability to control Magic. With their rights being threatened by the very people in power meant to protect them, the Wielders see Finn as their last chance for a better life. But when Finn is abducted and blackmailed into the service of a vengeful royal, his loyalty, and his heart, will be put to the ultimate test.

On a throne miles away, Andromeda, selected at birth to inherit the role of Mother Queen and continue her family’s royal line, has waited years for her chance to exact revenge on those who stole her freedom and tore her family apart. But she can’t do it alone. With the help of a handsome and intriguing young doctor, she will right the wrongs committed against her, and forge a path of a most gloriously scarlet retribution.

With the fate of their kingdom hanging in the balance, these two unlikely allies must navigate an intricate web of political rivalries and long-buried secrets in order to achieve their goals. But as hidden plots unfold and the true rot at the heart of the country is revealed, what starts as a quest for justice spirals into a desperate game of survival.

From navigating grief and guilt following the devastating loss of his father to persevering in the face of an ongoing and private battle with his own body. All is shared in Roz's disarming signature blend of blunt truth and humour.A Little Bit Broken is a deeply personal and inspiring account of self-forgiveness, redemption and recovering from bad choices—because let's face it, the reason we make bad choices is that they usually feel really good. Ashlords (Ashlords, #1) 42281865 Red Rising meets The Scorpio Races in this epic fantasy following three phoenix horse riders--skilled at alchemy--who must compete at The Races--the modern spectacle that has replaced warfare within their empire.

Every year since the Ashlords were gifted phoenix horses by their gods, they've raced them. First into battle, then on great hunts, and finally for the pure sport of seeing who rode the fastest. Centuries of blood and fire carved their competition into a more modern spectacle: The Races.

Over the course of a multi-day event, elite riders from clashing cultures vie to be crowned champion. But the modern version of the sport requires more than good riding. Competitors must be skilled at creating and controlling phoenix horses made of ash and alchemy, which are summoned back to life each sunrise with uniquely crafted powers to cover impossible distances and challenges before bursting into flames at sunset. But good alchemy only matters if a rider knows how to defend their phoenix horse at night. Murder is outlawed, but breaking bones and poisoning ashes? That's all legal and encouraged.

In this year's Races, eleven riders will compete, but three of them have more to lose than the rest--a champion's daughter, a scholarship entrant, and a revolutionary's son. Who will attain their own dream of glory? Or will they all flame out in defeat?]]>

But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

James Clear, one of the world's leading experts on habit formation, reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results.

If you're having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn't you. The problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don't want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you'll get a proven system that can take you to new heights.

Clear is known for his ability to distill complex topics into simple behaviors that can be easily applied to daily life and work. Here, he draws on the most proven ideas from biology, psychology, and neuroscience to create an easy-to-understand guide for making good habits inevitable and bad habits impossible. Along the way, readers will be inspired and entertained with true stories from Olympic gold medalists, award-winning artists, business leaders, life-saving physicians, and star comedians who have used the science of small habits to master their craft and vault to the top of their field.

Learn how to:
- Make time for new habits (even when life gets crazy);
- Overcome a lack of motivation and willpower;
- Design your environment to make success easier;
- Get back on track when you fall off course;
...and much more.

Atomic Habits will reshape the way you think about progress and success, and give you the tools and strategies you need to transform your habits--whether you are a team looking to win a championship, an organization hoping to redefine an industry, or simply an individual who wishes to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, or achieve any other goal.]]>

Seventeen-year-old Kallum has life all planned out: pass his simulation test, snap up a job on the upper rung, and ask the girl of his dreams out. No more working at the bakery.

But life has a funny way of ruining plans.

Not only does he get reassigned to a hermit, but his hallucinations also make him fear that he’s turning into his worst nightmare: becoming one of the Crazies.

Worse still, the aetherium, an energy stone bestowed by the alien race called the Aeternas, is failing. And, according to the hermit, it’s all Kallum’s fault. Without the dome shield protecting Levitor, the Reavers and beasts roaming the land outside are bound to invade.

Levitor’s fate rests upon Kallum’s shoulders. He’s the only one who can seek out his father, who has the means to save the city. But the Aeternas are hunting him down, and he’s running out of time.

What will he sacrifice for the greater good?

He’s left her a nomination for a summer tryout at the secretive Bureau of Supernatural Affairs. Amari is certain the answer to finding out what happened to him lies somewhere inside, if only she can get her head around the idea of mermaids, dwarves, yetis and magicians all being real things, something she has to instantly confront when she is given a weredragon as a roommate.

Amari must compete against some of the nation’s wealthiest kids—who’ve known about the supernatural world their whole lives and are able to easily answer questions like which two Great Beasts reside in the Atlantic Ocean and how old is Merlin? Just getting around the Bureau is a lesson alone for Amari with signs like ‘Department of Hidden Places this way, or is it? If that all wasn’t enough, every Bureau trainee has a talent enhanced to supernatural levels to help them do their jobs but Amari is given an illegal ability. As if she needed something else to make her stand out.

Reina Mori, a naturalist, who can intuit the language of life itself. Parisa Kamali, a telepath who can traverse the depths of the subconscious, navigating worlds inside the human mind. Callum Nova, an empath easily mistaken for a manipulative illusionist, who can influence the intimate workings of a person’s inner self. Finally, there is Tristan Caine, who can see through illusions to a new structure of reality—an ability so rare that neither he nor his peers can fully grasp its implications.

When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they will have one year to qualify for initiation, during which time they will be permitted preliminary access to the Society’s archives and judged based on their contributions to various subjects of impossibility: time and space, luck and thought, life and death. Five, they are told, will be initiated. One will be eliminated. The six potential initiates will fight to survive the next year of their lives, and if they can prove themselves to be the best among their rivals, most of them will.

You have been selected to attend Zodiac Academy, where your star sign defines your destiny.

If you're one of the Fae, elemental magic is in your blood. And apparently it's in ours. As twins born in the month of Gemini, we're a rare breed even in this academy of supernatural a-holes.

Changelings were outlawed hundreds of years ago but I guess our birth parents didn't get the memo. Which means we're totally unprepared for the ruthless world of Fae.

Air. Fire. Water. Earth.

No one has ever harnessed all four of them, until we arrived. And it hasn't made us any friends so far.

As the rarest Elementals ever known, we're already a threat to the four celestial heirs; the popular, vindictive bullies who happen to be some of the hottest guys we've ever seen. It doesn't help that they're the most dangerous beasts in the Academy. And probably on earth too.

Our fates are intertwined, but they want us gone. They've only got until the lunar eclipse to force us out and they'll stop at nothing to succeed.

We never knew we had a birthright to live up to but now that we do, we intend to claim our throne.

We can't expect any help from the faculty when it comes to defending ourselves. So if the dragon shifters want some target practice, the werewolves want someone to hunt or the vampires fancy a snack then we have to be ready. But we've been looking after each other for a long time and fighting back is in our blood.

As soon as I saw his message, I immediately replied:

SIX OF CROWWSSSSS DUDE

I stand by that statement, because this book took my breath away. I stayed up until the wee hours of morning to finish this beautiful piece of work.

During the first chapter of this book, I wasn’t really sure if I’d like it. The writing was slow, and perhaps even a bit boring. But I’m glad I got through it, because it was perfect setup for the rest of the book.

And OH MY GOD the rest of the book was FREAKING AWESOME.

Literally. Like, it’s just...

description

The six characters we follow in the story are Kaz Brekker, Inej Ghafa, Jesper Fahey, Wylan Van Eck, Nina Zenik, and Matthias Helvar. There isn’t a better combination of personalities in this world. With humor and snark, grief and profundity, jealousy and rage, love and heartbreak this book has absolutely ripped me apart.

Jesper knocked his head against the hull and cast his eyes heavenward. “Fine. But if Pekka Rollins kills us all, I’m going to get Wylan’s ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost.
Brekker’s lips quirked. “I’ll just hire Matthias ghost to kick your ghost’s ass.
“My ghost won’t associate with your ghost, Matthias said primly, and then wondered if the sea air was rotting his brain.

I can’t decide whether I like Kaz or Inej the best at this point, because both are such strong, smart, amazing people.

“I'm a business man," he'd told her. "No more, no less."
"You're a thief, Kaz."
"Isn't that what I just said?

Their backstories also absolutely killed me. There is such strength and beauty in the way they pulled themselves up and continued living. Kaz’s backstory in particular struck me, because of his desire to absolutely obliterate Pekka Rollins.

“Brick by brick, I will destroy you.

It adds conflict to the story, but also adds an extra layer of depth to his character, which I appreciated a lot.

I couldn’t come up with a good criticism for Six of Crows. At first I was thinking of criticizing how cruel and callous the characters can be at times but they’re murderers and thieves, it’s not like I expected otherwise. And despite their shortcomings, I still root for them with every inch of my being. They’re the underdogs, after all. They’re smart and strong, which is the reason they have survived as long as they have in Ketterdam, but they’re still the underdogs. And part of me loves that.

And Ketterdam! That’s a place in Kerch. But there's also Shu Han, Ravka, Novyi Zem, and Fjerda. The worldbuilding is just Hold up...

description

I guess Matthias and Nina’s relationship is something I might criticize. The ending was awesome [spoilers removed] and I think there was certainly a spark between them that would appeal to some audiences. Unfortunately, I’m just not part of that audience. I think the moment Matthias tried to strangle Nina, I was super turned off from the whole thing lol.

But I’m glad I read this, because the only parts I really liked from the Shadow and Bone TV show were the ones involving Kaz, Inej, and Jesper. Now I understand why.

This book is amazing. I live for this kind of book.

Naia was raised in the shadow of her twin brother, the crown prince, who has iron magic much more powerful than hers. But Naia has wishes of her own. They awaken when she finds a white fae almost dying in the woods. She only heard of them in stories; the dreaded race that razed cities to the ground, killed her grandparents, almost rid Aluria of humans—until they disappeared. But the fae is evasive and secretive—and also alluring and fascinating, more beautiful than anyone she’s ever seen. And then it happens: Naia kisses him—and nothing will be the same again.

In another kingdom, Leah, a necromancer princess, has to find a husband in less than four days, during the gathering, when royals from all over Aluria meet. Her family makes it very clear that she can pick any prince she wants—except one: Naia’s brother. And it turns out that he’s the one; the one who makes her heart beat faster.

Meanwhile, war looms over the land. One of the kingdoms is amassing immense power. The White Fae might be returning. Amidst it all, Naia and her brother struggle with newfound magical powers, family secrets, and most of all, their own treacherous hearts.

We are a kingdom locked in time. Shifters unable to feel our animals. Stuck here by a deal between the late king and a demon who seeks our destruction.

The only one keeping this kingdom alive is Nyfain, the golden prince to a stolen throne. The last dragon shifter.

He’s our hope.
He’s my nightmare.

He takes me, instead. Forces me back to the castle as his prisoner. Seeks to use me.

Apparently, I can save him. I can save the whole forgotten kingdom, locked away by the demon king’s power.

But it would mean taming the monster beneath his skin. It would mean giving myself to him.

It would mean my ruin.

First and foremost, I'd like to thank the author of this lovely book (Sara DeLaVergne) for giving me this ARC in exchange for an honest review :)

Daughter of Shattered Skies is a whirlwind of romance, magic, adventure, and power. It explores a world divided into day and night, where tension and conflict are bursting from every corner.

The main characters are fantastic. Princess Issaria is my personal favorite, because her dynamic nature creates a sense of movement and resilience to the story. The sense of responsibility she feels to save her people is incredible as she takes the identity of “Kai, but still she forges on. Elon also captured my heart with his endearing personality, and Shairi surprised me with her role in the story.

Be afraid, but do it anyway.

(Also, Prince Calix is definitely going onto my book boyfriend list. He’s got such a nice vibe.)

description

The quality of writing surprised me! There were some minor grammatical errors here and there (e.g. “he instead of “the), but they were overshadowed by the wonderful organization of ideas. The reading was smooth and easily hooked me into the intricacies of the plot.

And the best thing about this book, in my opinion, is the worldbuilding! It is so well-thought out—I could imagine every scene in amazing detail. Also, how cool is the Glass?? The purple crystal is such a creative addition to the book!

Would DEFINITELY recommend it, especially if you’re a fan of authors like Sarah J. Maas or Sabaa Tahir!

Fosbit and any files relating to a Fosbit do not exist.

The Tarelen peoples that protect and provide sanctuary for the Avitens of Fethrist are not real.

The abilities of the Tarelen peoples with their heightened skills, living in their Utopian world are myth, their purpose here mere tales; rumours of their reincarnations enabling them to live many lives ridiculous!

And there is definitely no magic.

None at all.

No, really, there isn’t.

Magic is not a thing.

There are also no hidden worlds or mythical beings coexisting just out of sight.

Equally, there are no secret access points to these hidden worlds that don’t exist, and there is no, 'unfinished business from the past' that is set to destroy, well, anything.

There is no disaster looming.

Anyway, regardless of any potential threat that may or may not be present, this publication, The Octunnumi and any reference to any other beings is a work of fiction.

On Wendy Darling’s first night in Chicago, a boy called Peter appears at her window. He’s dizzying, captivating, beautiful―so she agrees to join him for a night on the town.

Wendy thinks they’re heading to a party, but instead they’re soon running in the city’s underground. She makes friends―a punk girl named Tinkerbelle and the lost boys Peter watches over. And she makes enemies―the terrifying Detective Hook, and maybe Peter himself, as his sinister secrets start coming to light. Can Wendy find the courage to survive this night―and make sure everyone else does, too?

Acclaimed author K. Ancrum has re-envisioned Peter Pan with a central twist that will send all your previous memories of J. M. Barrie’s classic permanently off to Neverland.

When Hunter Cassidy plans to infiltrate the Assassin's Legion, posing as an assassin-in-training, she is prepared to encounter danger every step of the way. What she doesn't expect is the ruggedly handsome and relentlessly fierce trainee, Slade Baines.

It's hard enough that Hunter is the first female to be accepted to train with the Master Assassin himself. Even when she beats the other candidates, the Master ranks her lowest of all. In the male-dominated Legion, the other trainees see her as a weak link to be driven out of their ranks.

When they try to force Hunter out, Slade gets in their way, becoming an unexpected ally. Despite her best intentions, Hunter finds herself lowering her guard around him, which only makes carrying out her secret mission more difficult and puts her in danger of falling for him.

But there's more at stake than Hunter's heart. The Master Assassin possesses the key to locate a weapon that Hunter must ensure remains hidden at all costs. In her quest to stop this deadly power from falling into the wrong hands, she must make a choice between following her heart... or fulfilling her destiny.

This is a full-length novel at 90,000 words, the first in the Assassin's Magic series.

Lore 53375824 From the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Minds comes a sweepingly ambitious, high-octane tale of power, destiny, love and redemption.

Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.
Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world in the wake of her family's sadistic murder by a rival line, turning her back on the hunt's promises of eternal glory. For years she's pushed away any thought of revenge against the man--now a god--responsible for their deaths.

Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek out her help: Castor, a childhood friend of Lore believed long dead, and a gravely wounded Athena, among the last of the original gods.

The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and, at last, a way for Lore to leave the Agon behind forever. But Lore's decision to bind her fate to Athena's and rejoin the hunt will come at a deadly cost--and still may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees.]]>

Malice (Malice Duology, #1) 51530580 A princess isn’t supposed to fall for an evil sorceress. But in this darkly magical retelling of “Sleeping Beauty, true love is more than a simple fairy tale.

Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss.

You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily-ever-after.

Utter nonsense.

Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either.

Until I met her.

Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she . . . cares for me. Even though it was a power like mine that was responsible for her curse.

But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating—and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps, together, we could forge a new world.

Nonsense again.

Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I

I am the villain.]]>

A History of My Brief Body 44049371 In this stunning essay-collection-cum-prose-poem-cycle, Belcourt meditates on the difficulty and necessity of finding joy as a queer NDN in a country that denies that joy all too often. Out of the 'ruins of the museum of political depression' springs a 'tomorrow free of the rhetorical trickery of colonizers everywhere.' Happiness, this beautiful book says, is the ultimate act of resistance. --Michelle Hart, O, The Oprah Magazine
The youngest ever winner of the Griffin Prize mines his personal history in a brilliant new essay collection seeking to reconcile the world he was born into with the world that could be.

For readers of Ocean Vuong and Maggie Nelson and fans of Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot, A History of My Brief Body is a brave, raw, and fiercely intelligent collection of essays and vignettes on grief, colonial violence, joy, love, and queerness.

Billy-Ray Belcourt's debut memoir opens with a tender letter to his kokum and memories of his early life in the hamlet of Joussard, Alberta, and on the Driftpile First Nation. Piece by piece, Billy-Ray's writings invite us to unpack and explore the big and broken world he inhabits every day, in all its complexity and a legacy of colonial violence and the joy that flourishes in spite of it; first loves and first loves lost; sexual exploration and intimacy; the act of writing as a survival instinct and a way to grieve. What emerges is not only a profound meditation on memory, gender, anger, shame, and ecstasy, but also the outline of a way forward. With startling honesty, and in a voice distinctly and assuredly his own, Belcourt situates his life experiences within a constellation of seminal queer texts, among which this book is sure to earn its place. Eye-opening, intensely emotional, and excessively quotable, A History of My Brief Body demonstrates over and over again the power of words to both devastate and console us.]]>

Perhaps if Billy-Ray Belcourt is a concept that shouts and dances and philosophizes I'll in the end have been scattered in thousands of pieces across the nation. Everywhere will be my graveyard. I'll have lived and died as that which is more than the sum of my body parts. What will matter isn't how many days I endured in the battleground of linear time, but what every fibre of me aspired to—something more than the gift of mortality, more than the rusty category of the individual who had meaning spewing from his ears, something only fully and fleetingly realized in the hands and mouths and chests of those whom I encountered as a ghostly mark on the page."

This writing is beautiful. And although the sentences are lengthy at times and difficult to read, they flow through my mind like music. There is a certain level of profundity that the author brought into his writing—a level that I applaud, because it’s rare to see.

This is not my usual kind of reading. I like fiction—fantasy, romance, young people doing stupid things—so I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy it. But I wanted to read something meaningful for this month to better understand Indigenous heritage.

There were times where I stopped and stared at the page, like, “Yeah, this is definitely not my cup of tea. It was difficult for my teeny brain to read through it properly, and it took me longer than expected. I’m glad, though, that I took my time scouring the pages and finished it. There is true literary genius within these pages, combined with a deep knowledge of life and philosophy. It is something that I definitely needed in my life, to stave off some of my own ignorance. Before reading this, I had never even heard the term “NDN, or “political depression.

“A bullet is beholden to nothing, not even the barrel that births it. We can’t ask a gun for forgiveness, as its maker has already been empowered by law to shed blame, to be blameless.

The author touched on some important topics. Residential schools, gender roles, sex, racism, homophobia, suicide, gun violence, intersectionality, and even police brutality. There is something dizzyingly awe-inspiring when someone just tells it like it is. Everyone always talks about Canada being racist as if it’s all in the past.

Indigenous people were murdered. Canadians were racist.

Canada does have a history of racism ingrained into its soul. It is there and always will be. But there are actions being taken every day, right now, that hurt and maim and kill the people this land belongs to. Actions that we have the power to stop.

“They continue to build their lives in a bout of historical amnesia. The ungrievable, those of us who worship an impossible future, we who never were, are rarely granted as sizable a public rage as theirs on that tiny, haunted island.

-in reference to “an uproar in response to the city’s routinized declaration that they sit atop the traditional lands of the Beothuk, now extinct.

The author illustrated the fear and the anger he feels so well. In one recollection, he detailed how a white (heterosexual) couple looked at him and his boyfriend when they stopped at a red light on the way to the movie theatre one day. And how the couple then pulled up behind them and started following them. Luckily, no one was harmed—a yellow light separated them—but I couldn’t imagine the kind of fear he experienced at that moment. I couldn’t imagine someone doing that to me, if I was not heteronormative, because of their hate.

The story of Attawapiskat in particular struck me, because of how recent it is. It drove me to research things I never thought of before. Maria Campbell’s story, for one, absolutely shocked me. I’d never heard of it, never knew how it was covered up. I never knew about how the Cross Lake First Nation in Manitoba declared a state of emergency, in March 2016, in response to 140 suicide attempts. There are so, so many I’d never even heard of. Or perhaps I had, in passing, but I considered it at the time another depressing news story to shove into the back of my brain.

I learned so much from this book. More importantly, it has sparked something within me to learn more about these issues.

What I love the most about this book, though, is that it ends on a positive note. A note of joy and hope. A note of growth and love. A note of progress. It truly is an inspiring read.

Thank you for reading this review.

The Night Circus 9361589
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.]]>

Caraval (Caraval, #1) 27883214 A legendary competition.
A mesmerizing romance.
An unbreakable bond
between two sisters.

Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval . . . beware of getting swept too far away.]]>

THIS BOOK. IS. AMAZING.

Seriously. At some point while listening to the Caraval audiobook, I literally sat up in bed, heart pounding, because the tension was so high at the end of the story. The mystery, the magic, the madness it was all very well-crafted.

Also, every single time Julian (the love interest) entered a scene, my brain malfunctioned a bit. That may have contributed just a teensy-eensy-weensy bit to how much I am in love with this story. Like, damn that romance was spicy.

One thing that really struck me, though, was that this is one of the first audiobooks I’ve truly enjoyed. Part of the credit goes to Stephanie Garber’s storytelling, of course, but I think Rebecca Soler did such an awesome job with the voice acting! Every inflection of her voice carried weight, and moved the story forward with power. I think the author interview at the end of the audiobook I was listening to was a nice touch, as well, to get a bit more insight into the story.

My reading experience went from this:

description

To this:

description

The writing style is absolutely freaking beautiful. There were some sentences that seemed a bit off with the metaphors when looking from a logical stance, but I think from a reader’s perspective it was easy to brush off. For example, the line:

“He tasted like midnight and wind, and shades of rich brown and light blue. Colors that made her feel safe and guarded.

At first, I was taken aback. What is midnight and wind supposed to taste like? But the image it evoked in my mind fit Julian’s character (dark and wild), so at some point I stopped caring. The level of description in this book, although at times long-winded, absolutely blew my mind. I loved it.

“She'd disappeared like a broken star, leaving the world untouched, save for the bits of missing light that no one would ever see again.

Beautiful.

I have two minor criticisms of the story (that brought it down half a star), but first I want to praise the fantastic twist at the end. And oh man, was that ending tense. I know I’ve already mentioned this, but wow. I was so into that ending, so ready to see how the story would tie itself up. And it did—wonderfully. I don’t want to spoil anything, but it was absolute heart-stopping. I definitely did not foresee it. At all. I was put through such an emotional rollercoaster and it was EXHILARATING.

My minor criticisms:

My first criticism is that Scarlett Dragna was a difficult character to like. I empathize with her situation and understand that she is a growing person making tough decisions.

But!

She annoyed the heck out of me sometimes with her questionable decision-making and thought processes. From the start, her attitude annoyed me a bit, as if she was above everyone else. The condescending way she thought of others around her at times, her naivety in how absolutely wonderful the Count must be (while she criticizes her sister for being naive and falling in love too fast), how she seemed to be obsessed with decorum and politeness At some point, it was too much. While reviewing this book, I put it on my strong-women ŷ shelf, took it down, and then put it back up again. The female characters in the book—especially Tella—faced their adversaries in a unique and smart way. But Scarlett Dragna is just incredibly difficult to consider strong in the traditional sense. After much consideration, I decided to put it back on the shelf. The abuse and trauma she dealt with as a child may have been driving factors in her more unlikable character traits at the start of the book. Her ability to overcome that by the end of the book, in my opinion, makes her a strong character.

So although it took away from the reading experience at the start of the book, it was not enough to mar my opinion of the book entirely.

My second criticism is that I have sooooo many unanswered questions.

description

Like, what places are there, other than the Conquered Isle of Trisda? How do all these magical potions and spells work? I’m assuming there’s some kind of magic system, because none of the tricks in Caraval were ever explained. For example, people die in the game but they can come back to life, yet it was never explained how exactly that happens. Why does this magic only exist in Caraval? Or perhaps magic also exists elsewhere? That was never mentioned. And Scarlett Dragna is the daughter of a governor, so how did that play a role in her life? Doesn’t he do things other than terrorize his daughters? What’s their government like? There’s so much I want to know!

I don’t necessarily view this as an entirely bad thing. It may frustrate me to have so many questions, but it also is a driving factor in me picking up the next book, Legendary. (Which is already very high up on my TBR list!)

description

Maybe my questions will never get answered. Maybe they will.

All I know is that this book, despite the few flaws I could find between its pages (or sound waves!) was written very, very well.

My favorite quote:

“Dreams that come true can be beautiful, but they can also turn into nightmares when people won't wake up.

See ya in the next review :)

As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?]]>

There are so many things I want to say about this book. Its fresh perspective on politics, providing the perfect escape from reality. Its vibrant characters, making me smile to myself like an idiot as they bantered. Its lovely romance, which filled my heart with a crazy amount of joy. Seriously, if I tried writing everything, I’d run out of room.

So instead, I’m just going to boil it down to the main points.

Henry and Alex: SO. FREAKING. CUTE.

I was so invested in their relationship. At times it was a bit trope-y, and I found myself cringing at how cheesy it was. But for the remainder of the book I was a puddle of mush.

The humor: Oh, I could go on for days about this. Alex has a strong voice, and he’s someone I would want to meet in real life. Their dialogue is snappy, fun, and fast. Even the event that instigates the whole story [spoilers removed] put a smile on my face.

And the text messages? Emails? Awesome. I’ve never seen such realistic and hilarious conversations in a book.

Also, there’s this moment where Alex keeps turkeys in his room for Thanksgiving instead of a 5-star hotel, and it’s golden.

“That night, as Alex stares into the cold, pitiless eyes of a prehistoric beast of prey, he has a few regrets.
THEY KNOW, he texts Henry. THEY KNOW I HAVE ROBBED THEM OF FIVE STAR ACCOMODATIONS TO SIT IN A CAGE IN MY ROOM, AND THE MINUTE I TURN MY BACK THEY ARE GOING TO FEAST ON MY FLESH.

The alternate universe: Absolutely deliciously unrealistic, but I’m all here for it. In the RWRB universe, a woman has been elected president, and the First Son of the United States (FSOTUS) is a person of color.

At the same time, I like how intertwined it is with our own world—because it is our world, just with a twist. There were many important lessons to be learned about politics, fame, and life. This quote from Prince Henry in particular struck me, in regards to the royal family:

“What are we even defending here, Philip? What kind of legacy? What kind of family, that says, we’ll take the murder, we’ll take the raping and pillaging and the colonizing, we’ll scrub it up nice and neat in a museum, but oh no, you’re a bloody poof? That’s beyond our sense of decorum! I’ve bloody well had it. I’ve sat about long enough letting you and Gran and the weight of the damned world keep me pinned, and I’m finished. I don’t care. You can take your legacy and your decorum and you can shove it up your fucking arse, Philip. I’m done.

Of course, me being a cynical bastard, I found it difficult to fall into the unfamiliar world at first. But eventually, I came to like it.

Oh, and before I end this: A quick warning for younger folks interested in reading the book. [spoilers removed]
