A vendetta years in the making. And a counter terrorism operative who will risk everything -- even treason -- to keep the people he loves alive.

Brad Thor, the New York Times bestselling author of Takedown, delivers an explosive international thriller featuring Navy SEAL turned Homeland Security operative Scot Harvath, who somewhere, somehow, has left the wrong person alive.

"Thou shalt not negotiate with terrorists..."

Six months ago: In the dead of the night, five of the most dangerous detainees in the war on terror are pulled from their isolation cells in Guantanamo Bay, held at gunpoint, and told to strip off their orange jumpsuits. Issued civilian clothes and driven to the base airfield, they are loaded aboard a Boeing 727 and set free.

Present day: Covert counterterrorism agent Scot Harvath awakens to discover that his world has changed violently -- and forever. A sadistic assassin with a personal vendetta is wreaking havoc of biblical proportions. Unleashing nightmarish horrors on those closest to Harvath, the attacker thrusts everything Harvath holds dear -- including his life -- into absolute peril.

Ordered by the president to stay out of the investigation, Harvath is forced to mount his own operation to uncover the conspiracy and to exact revenge. When he discovers a connection between the attacks and a group of prisoners secretly released from Guantanamo, Harvath must ask himself previously unthinkable questions about the organizations and the nation he has spent his life serving.

A renegade from his own government, Harvath will place his life on the line as his search for the truth draws him into a showdown with one of the most dangerous men on the face of the earth.

Brad Thor roars through this nonstop adventure full of international intrigue, twisted betrayals, and ultimate revenge.]]>

A fast and entertaining read. You have to suspend reality a bit to enjoy this one, but that is what escapist reading is all about. This was the first in the series that I read, but I wish that I had read the others first because there were a lot of references to previous novels in this one (unfortunately, I believe some of the plot twists in the earlier novels have been ruined for me if I decide to go back and start the series from the beginning). If you like military action, espionage, and tech-suspense, then this book is right up your alley.

<![CDATA[State of the Union (Scot Harvath, #3)]]> 3854677 From the national bestselling author of The Lions of Lucerne and Path of the Assassin comes another electrifying international thriller featuring all-American hero Scot Harvath, as he plunges into the frigid heart of the Russian tundra to save the fragile state of the union. On a cold January morning, the United States awakes to discover that an old enemy, one long believed dead and buried, has crawled out of its grave to lay siege to the world's only superpower.

With the stunning discovery that enhanced Soviet-made suitcase nukes have been secreted in America's major cities, President Jack Rutledge gathers his National Security Council to weigh the feasibility of a first strike against the Russian Federation. There's only one problem. For over two decades, the Russians have been funneling international aid money into a top secret air defense system, which has just been brought on-line and which will render any conventional attack upon their country utterly ineffective.

After exhausting all of his other options, and with Soviet sleeper agents preparing to detonate their deadly payloads across the United States, the president turns to the nation's final hope, ex-Navy SEAL and Secret Service Agent Scot Harvath.

Assigned to a covert section of the Department of Homeland Security and charged with defending the nation against all foreign aggressors by any means necessary, Harvath finds himself hand-picked by the president to unravel a brilliantly orchestrated, fiendishly timed conspiracy that has already shattered the fragile peace between the world's nations and which, if successful, will leave the United States in smoldering ruins.

With family friend and former Deputy FBI Director Gary Lawlor nowhere to be found and suspected of betraying his country, Harvath embarks on an adventure that will test the bonds of loyalty and reveal a nation's deepest secrets.

As high-voltage and timely as they come, State of the Union is a frighteningly real, headline-ripping tale of espionage and intrigue that will keep readers guessing until the last tantalizing piece of the puzzle locks into place.

With exotic international locales, hair-raising suspense, and scenes of pulse-pounding action, Brad Thor has once again reaffirmed his position as the thriller writer readers and critics alike have hailed as Clancy, Cussler, and Ludlum all rolled into one.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And NoemĂ, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.]]>

It was very good and very creepy . . . but is is award worthy??? Maybe . . . I am not sure I would always come to the conclusion that it moved me to the point I would shower it with victory statues, but I bet a few discussions about it would end with me heaping accolades on it.

<![CDATA[A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy]]> 25937937 For the last sixteen years, Sue Klebold, Dylan s mother, has lived with the indescribable grief and shame of that day. How could her child, the promising young man she had loved and raised, be responsible for such horror? And how, as his mother, had she not known something was wrong? Were there subtle signs she had missed? What, if anything, could she have done differently?
These are questions that Klebold has grappled with every day since the Columbine tragedy. In"A Mother s Reckoning," she chronicles with unflinching honesty her journey as a mother trying to come to terms with the incomprehensible. In the hope that the insights and understanding she has gained may help other families recognize when a child is in distress, she tells her story in full, drawing upon her personal journals, the videos and writings that Dylan left behind, and on countless interviews with mental health experts.
Filled with hard-won wisdom and compassion, "A Mother s Reckoning"is a powerful and haunting book that sheds light on one of the most pressing issues of our time. And with fresh wounds from the recent Newtown and Charleston shootings, never has the need for understanding been more urgent.
"All author profits from the book will be donated to research and to charitable organizations focusing on mental health issues."

Another thing about this series as a whole is that I think the commentary on how women would survive without men must be tongue-in-cheek. If it isn't, then the author seems to be making it seem like women would struggle without men. But, I do think it is more likely a case of focusing on extreme response to more quickly get the point across in graphic novel format. Also, it may be that it is not so much that the women struggle without men, but is trying to show how important the sexes are to reach other.

I am hoping that this volume is just a lull in the series, a connector volume, perhaps, and it will improve again with the next volume.

While I continue to enjoy this series, this volume was not quite as strong for me as the last two. It felt a bit disjointed and some of the plot twists too coincidental (I mean, it is quite an outlandish story, so I am not sure what I am expecting!) Some of that feeling may come from the last two issues compiled here having a different feel and different characters. So, to summarize, it is good, but feels slightly off.

Why lower on this volume, you ask? The end felt rushed to me. A whole bunch of loose ends tied up much too quickly for such an epic story. Earlier in the series they have entire volumes dedicated to events that they likely would have summed up in just a few pages in this one. The ending was okay, just too quick for my tastes!

But, as mentioned, the series as a whole was very good and worth checking out. If you like post-apocalyptic “what if? stories this is a very unique scenario to consider. Also, while it includes suspense and action, there is also a lot of humor and even some romance. Seems like pretty much every genre is included and it all works together well.

Throughout the whole series the art has continued to be consistent (I love when they don’t change artists) and perfect for the story. While the regular panel to panel artwork is great, the alternative art used for the covers has been fantastic. There are many found throughout that could be framed and hung on the wall. Since the point of the graphic novel is to combine words with images, I consider this series a great success in that department!

This was a fairly good book with a kind of blah ending. There was a lot of build up for a two page resolution. I did like the mystery and suspense. The dated nature of the subject matter was actually very interesting and amusing (hospitals and the behavior of people in general were a lot different in the 70s and 80s than they are now). Some of the plot twists didn't make sense or seemed obvious (I would say to myself "duh, didn't they realize that!?")

So, not a disappointing read, but only 3 stars.

I have heard about the show based on this, I am going to have to check that out, too!

Also, as a graphic novel reader knows, each issue should come with decent cliffhangers and unanswered questions. This first issue doesn't disappoint! One thing I must say along these lines is that sometimes I cannot get into the world and the story of the series until the second collected issue after I start to get comfortable with everything. This volume struck me as more of a transitional volume - lots of new information, clarification of some earlier plot questions etc. But, not really any standalone storylines that climax with the end of the volume. This was good because new info is always appreciated!

I am still loving the artwork in this one. Simple, but effective - reminiscent of earlier comic book art. Also, and I have mentioned this previously with other series, it is nice when the artist stays the same throughout the series. This was definitely the longest it ever took me to complete a graphic novel. This is not the fault of the graphic novel itself, it just happened to be chosen as the monthly read for one of my book clubs when I was in the midst of one of the worst reading slumps of my life. Because of this, I never really gained any momentum with this one. So, do not look at the length of time it took me to read this one and it does not really reflect my experience with it at all.

However, I would not say I am in with the people who were blown away by this book or feel like the experience is life changing. I know that this story has a passionate following considering it has become the symbol of how some people feel about government in general. It is very easy to see why this is the case as this book doesn’t pull any punches in the same way that 1984 didn’t pull any punches. And, while I can 100% appreciate that, I didn’t quite connect with this as much as I had hoped. I truly think that this relates to the fact that time in my life that I met this book. Over the past few years of dealing with political debate in America, I have become quite exhausted with it all, so I think this felt like reading the news that I have been trying to avoid!

All that being said, it is a good and thought-provoking story. If you enjoy dystopian fiction and don’t mind when it doesn’t fall too far from the reality tree, then you will find something here to scratch your reading itch.

review:
V is for Vendetta is one of those graphic novels that I would think that everyone at least kind of knows about due to the 2005 movie with Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving or the fact that the Guy Fawkes mask from it has become a popular pop culture symbol. It has been a long time since I have seen the movie, but it feels like in many ways it followed the graphic novel closely. But, if you want the full experience of the story as it was meant to be, reading the graphic novel is a must.

If you are a post-apocalyptic fan, this series is right up your alley. I just checked back through my other reviews of this series, and while, for me, there have been a couple of issues that were not quite as strong along the way, it has generally been a win!

I continue to enjoy the artwork, and, as I like to mention with any series that does this, it has remained the same artist throughout. This fact appeals to me greatly when it comes to graphic novels and I am much more likely to start a series if I look at the final volume and see all the same names on the cover as the first volume. I like how the art has kind of a classic comic book feel!

Basically you like post-apocalyptic and you like comic books? 100% guarantee you will dig this!

Also, I like the alternate covers they have throughout the collected volume. I don’t think I would like the entire volume in this style, but for a little side journey at the issue break, it is pretty cool!

<![CDATA[Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster]]> 871781
Into Thin Air is the definitive account of the deadliest season in the history of Everest by the acclaimed journalist and author of the bestseller Into the Wild. On assignment for Outside Magazine to report on the growing commercialization of the mountain, Krakauer, an accomplished climber, went to the Himalayas as a client of Rob Hall, the most respected high-altitude guide in the world.ĚýĚýA rangy, thirty-five-year-old New Zealander, Hall had summited Everest four times between 1990 and 1995 and had led thirty-nine climbers to the top. Ascending the mountain in close proximity to Hall's team was a guided expedition led by Scott Fischer, a forty-year-old American with legendary strength and drive who had climbed the peak without supplemental oxygen in 1994. But neither Hall nor Fischer survived the rogue storm that struck in May 1996.

Krakauer examines what it is about Everest that has compelled so many people -- including himself -- to throw caution to the wind, ignore the concerns of loved ones, and willingly subject themselves to such risk, hardship, and expense. Written with emotional clarity and supported by his unimpeachable reporting, Krakauer's eyewitness account of what happened on the roof of the world is a singular achievement.

Into the Wild is available on audio, read by actor Campbell Scott.]]>

<![CDATA[The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics]]> 30183698
For readers of Laura Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit and Unbroken, the dramatic story of the American rowing team that stunned the world at Hitler's 1936 Berlin Olympics

Daniel James Brown’s robust book tells the story of the University of Washington’s 1936 eight-oar crew and their epic quest for an Olympic gold medal, a team that transformed the sport and grabbed the attention of millions of Americans. The sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the boys defeated elite rivals first from eastern and British universities and finally the German crew rowing for Adolf Hitler in the Olympic games in Berlin, 1936.

The emotional heart of the story lies with one rower, Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not for glory, but to regain his shattered self-regard and to find a place he can call home. The crew is assembledĚý by an enigmatic coach and mentored by a visionary, eccentric British boat builder, but it is their trust in each other that makes them a victorious team. They remind the country of what can be done when everyone quite literally pulls together—a perfect melding of commitment, determination, and optimism.

Drawing on the boys own diaries and journals, their photos and memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, The Boys in the Boat is an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate story of nine working-class boys from the American west who, in the depths of the Great Depression, showed the world what true grit really meant. It will appeal to readers of Erik Larson, Timothy Egan, James Bradley, and David Halberstam's The Amateurs.

In this case, the sport is rowing. The underdogs are the working class Western US college boys competing against the upper class Ivy Leaguers of the East. The true story of their progress to success and Olympic glory is enthralling. The writing is superb. You will find yourself falling in love with rowing even if you have never seen an oar slice through the water before.

History buffs, sports fans, and people who love a good story about the disrespected underdog finding ultimate success in the end - this book is for you!

Side note - this book also does a great job capturing the development of the Nazi regime as they rose to power while preparing for the 1936 Olympics. The stories of whitewashing the towns to cover up poverty and the newly established oppression of Jews and other minorities is heart-wrenching. Tales of the propaganda machine and the wool pulled over the eyes of the world is amazing. At one point, the author goes through a list of the things the athletes did "not see", and I was wondering if this was an intentional play on "Nazi".

A 5+ star book! I am sad that it is over!]]>

I love books and movies that get you interested in sports you never cared about before. Also, I love how the Olympics does the same thing. You turn on the TV and suddenly life itself depends on the outcome of some not quite mainstream sport like biathlon, cycling, diving, curling, etc. - and, while watching, you become an expert at all the finer points of the sport. The Boys in the Boat is the perfect example of this type of story. And, with the Winter Olympics coming up, the perfect way to whet my appetite for the competition.

This book was a delightful read that was easy to get into and stay invested in. Like any good underdog story and in the spirt of many great sports movies we get to go from humble beginnings, victories, setbacks, and development from rookie to champion. Every step of the way I found myself cheering, feeling empathy, and sometimes cringing as I made a close connection to our protagonist, Beth Harmon.

The Bad:

There really isn’t much that I would say is bad about this book. There are a few storylines that I thought might play out differently [spoilers removed] and maybe a few opportunities missed. But, not enough to detract from the overall experience

The Chess:

I know how to play chess and how all the pieces move. How long would I last in a chess game? Probably not very long as it has been years since I actually played and, as is reflected in this book, the strategy of those who play a lot is very complex and hard to follow with many, many potential moves needing to be anticipated and prepared for. At times, this book gets deep into describing chess matches and chess strategy. Actually understanding what is going on does not seem to matter, but it does occupy quite a bit of real estate in this book so it is something to be prepared for. If you think pages and pages of chess will not interest you, you can skim and should be fine.

Overall:

I am glad I read this book and I think a lot of people will enjoy it. I am looking forward to checking out the show on Netflix.

The War of the Worlds 17838874
Things then progress from a series of seemingly mundane reports about odd atmospheric disturbances taking place on Mars to the arrival of Martians just outside of London. At first, the Martians seem laughable, hardly able to move in Earth's comparatively heavy gravity, even enough to raise themselves out of the pit created when their spaceship landed. But soon the Martians reveal their true nature as death machines 100 feet tall rise up from the pit and begin laying waste to the surrounding land. Wells quickly moves the story from the countryside to the evacuation of London itself and the loss of all hope as England's military suffers defeat after defeat.

With horror, the narrator describes how the Martians suck the blood from living humans for sustenance and how it's clear that man is not being conquered so much as corralled.]]>
6 H.G. Wells Matthew 5 Completist Book Club), I did not find it in my list. And, because this is one of those books that has a plot people tend to know because of movies and/or its general pop culture relevance, it is difficult for me to know which parts of my memories of this are from the book and which are from other places. But, re-read or not, I am glad I read it in January 2022.

This is classic sci fi. It is easy to see how many parts of this led to the tropes we see in literary and cinematic sci-fi today. And it is pretty amazing the creativity Wells had for coming up with such vivid and scientifically based alien technology and biology. This book was way ahead of its time!

While the setting is late 1800s England (horse carriages, telegrams, etc.), it is not hard to picture this in a modern setting. Wells did a great job making the story timeless. Often when I read books set in this era, they may be good, but they can also feel dated not a bad thing, it is just that time moves on. But, with this one, society may have advanced, but it did not feel like time had moved on.

If you love the classics and/or love sci-fi and you have not read this book, I feel like it is a must for you to get it on your list right away. I was leaning toward 4 stars on this book, but the classic status and the effect it has had on sci fi over the years push that up to 5 stars!]]>

Red Harvest 16084906 7 Dashiell Hammett Matthew 4 "This damned burg's getting me. If I don't get away soon I'll be going blood-simple like the natives."

One man vs a town mired in corruption where the only answers can be found with gunfire and explosives. Action packed from page one while keeping the reader guessing how each of the plethora of interesting characters is involved in the shady goings-on. A really great crime drama - easy to see why it has classic status.

I listened to this one and it is the perfect way to take in these classic crime dramas. The narrator does the stereotypical hard boiled detective delivery of the dialogue which enhances the experience ten-fold. Lots of really great quotes in this book. I have included a couple here, but it is worth looking at the quotes page on Ĺ·±¦ÓéŔÖ to see more.

"Be still while I get up or I'll make an opening in your head for brains to leak in."

Also, after reading this I did some research on the background of this book. It is interesting to see that it was based on some of Hammett's experiences with actual events. In addition to that, the book has had an influence on a wide variety of films, tv shows, and other stories; a true pop culture origin point.

Origin (Robert Langdon, #5) 32307358 This an alternate cover for B01LY7FD0D

Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, arrives at the ultramodern Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend a major announcement--the unveiling of a discovery that "will change the face of science forever." The evening's host is Edmond Kirsch, a forty-year-old billionaire and futurist whose dazzling high-tech inventions and audacious predictions have made him a renowned global figure. Kirsch, who was one of Langdon's first students at Harvard two decades earlier, is about to reveal an astonishing breakthrough . . . one that will answer two of the fundamental questions of human existence.

As the event begins, Langdon and several hundred guests find themselves captivated by an utterly original presentation, which Langdon realizes will be far more controversial than he ever imagined. But the meticulously orchestrated evening suddenly erupts into chaos, and Kirsch's precious discovery teeters on the brink of being lost forever. Reeling and facing an imminent threat, Langdon is forced into a desperate bid to escape Bilbao. With him is Ambra Vidal, the elegant museum director who worked with Kirsch to stage the provocative event. Together they flee to Barcelona on a perilous quest to locate a cryptic password that will unlock Kirsch's secret.

Navigating the dark corridors of hidden history and extreme religion, Langdon and Vidal must evade a tormented enemy whose all-knowing power seems to emanate from Spain's Royal Palace itself . . . and who will stop at nothing to silence Edmond Kirsch. On a trail marked by modern art and enigmatic symbols, Langdon and Vidal uncover clues that ultimately bring them face-to-face with Kirsch's shocking discovery . . . and the breathtaking truth that has long eluded us. Religion and Science this is a big battle in our world today. It is an exhausting battle for someone like me who goes to church but also loves science. I worry that the feeling is starting to be that the two cannot exist together. Dan Brown does a great job of addressing this debate in this book (even though at times I was worried that it was going to end up just being another annoying commentary on the same debate)

Lead Female Characters Brown amuses me with every new lead female character. It is always a scientist, art expert, museum curator, etc. who just so happens to be one of the top 5 most beautiful women alive (he has 5 Langdon books, each with one of those top 5 ;) )

The Dan Brown formula I will say that each of Brown’s book has basically the same structure. A mystery starts (usually in a museum, church, famous building). Langdon meets a woman (see above). Langdon and this woman run around trying to solve the mystery. Yes, that formula is here. However, that felt okay this time. The last two books it felt like old hat almost like he was phoning it in. But, with this one I was kind of glad to get back into the same formula and he developed the plot and suspense well.

If you like Dan Brown I recommend this.

If you thought maybe the Langdon series had no gas left I recommend this.

If you want an interesting, thought-provoking mystery with a lot of suspense I recommend this.

The Recognitions 9759741 [Taken from the back cover]]]> 956 William Gaddis Matthew 2
I heard somewhere while reading this that Gaddis is praised for this work in that he made it the ultimate challenge for the reader. Yay! Let's make reading hard! #sarcasm

You know how you might read a book with 5 storylines that will change each chapter. It might be a bit confusing, but at least chapter breaks give you the chance to regroup. This book frequently mixes many storylines, changing paragraph to paragraph with no break - it is up to you to figure out which one is going on! To add to this, there are no quotation marks for dialogue - good luck figuring out who is talking.

In response to one of my updates while reading this, someone posted an article about this book (I am too exhausted from this book right now to find the article and directly quote it, but if you Google "Why are large, painful books considered classics?" and you will find it.) The gist of it is that people tend to rate these books highly because they are rating their accomplishment of finishing a chunky tome and not necessarily the quality of said tome. I can definitely see that being the case with The Recognitions.

Another thing that I read was that the book was not well received at first, but then it started getting accolades later on because of its complexity and difficulty to read. I am not sure why that is a good thing, but it was enough for it to become a staple on many "must read before you die" lists.

Summary - I am glad this is over. I only recommend it if you like difficult and painful reading experiences - or so you can check another book off a list.]]>

The tranquility of a cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything...until she lost her life.

This was my second Poirot after Murder On The Orient Express a few years ago. Seems like that is the one everyone has read! I read that one because I was interested to read it before the new movie version came out. This time I was looking to try another Poirot, and saw that Branagh was doing another run as the detective in an upcoming cinematic version of Death on the Nile, so it was the perfect one to try next.

It was good, but not quite as good as Orient Express. I am kind of not sure what else to say. It felt similar - as I am guessing they all do. Convoluted at times. I was surprised by a lot of it, but did guess a few things. I enjoyed the characters and the dialogue. Good fun, but not monumentally mind-blowing.

Worth reading for a fun little getaway that will get your mind-juices flowing. But, there are better (and worse) mysteries out there (at least from my experience). If you try it maybe it will be the best one you will have ever read - and I hope it is!]]>

The Sheltering Sky 11963271 A beautiful paperback edition of a landmark of 20th Century literature, by acclaimed author Paul Bowles

In this classic work of psychological terror, Paul Bowles examines the ways in which Americans apprehend an alien culture--and the ways in which their incomprehension destroys them. The story of three American travelers adrift in the cities and deserts of North Africa after World War II, The Sheltering Sky is at once merciless and heartbreaking in its compassion. It etches the limits of human reason and intelligence--perhaps even the limits of human life --when they touch the unfathomable emptiness and impassive cruelty of the dessert.

<![CDATA[The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires]]> 59349468 Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the '90s about a women's book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a blood-sucking fiend.

Patricia Campbell’s life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she’s always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they’re as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

This predictable pattern is upended when Patricia meets James Harris, a handsome stranger who moves into the neighborhood to take care of his elderly aunt and ends up joining the book club. James is sensitive and well-read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in twenty years. But there’s something off about him. He doesn’t have a bank account, he doesn’t like going out during the day, and Patricia’s mother-in-law insists that she knew him when she was a girl—an impossibility.

When local children go missing, Patricia and the book club members start to suspect James is more of a Bundy than a Beatnik—but no one outside of the book club believes them. Have they read too many true crime books, or have they invited a real monster into their homes?]]>

<![CDATA[A Thousand Naked Strangers: a Paramedic's Wild Ride to the Edge and Back]]> 25111005
In the aftermath of 9/11 Kevin Hazzard felt that something was missing from his life—his days were too safe, too routine. A failed salesman turned local reporter, he wanted to test himself, see how he might respond to pressure and danger. He signed up for emergency medical training and became, at age twenty-six, a newly minted EMT running calls in the worst sections of Atlanta. His life entered a different realm—one of blood, violence, and amazing grace.

Thoroughly intimidated at first and frequently terrified, he experienced on a nightly basis the adrenaline rush of walking into chaos. But in his downtime, Kevin reflected on how people’s facades drop away when catastrophe strikes. As his hours on the job piled up, he realized he was beginning to see into the truth of things. There is no pretense five beats into a chest compression, or in an alley next to a crack den, or on a dimly lit highway where cars have collided. Eventually, what had at first seemed impossible happened: Kevin acquired mastery. And in the process he was able to discern the professional differences between his freewheeling peers, what marked each—as he termed them—as “a tourist, “true believer, or “killer.

Combining indelible scenes that remind us of life’s fragile beauty with laugh-out-loud moments that keep us smiling through the worst, A Thousand Naked Strangers is an absorbing read about one man’s journey of self-discovery—a trip that also teaches us about ourselves.]]>

Upgrade 59838782 You are the next step in human evolution.

At first, Logan Ramsay isn’t sure if anything’s different. He just feels a little . . . sharper. Better able to concentrate. Better at multitasking. Reading a bit faster, memorizing better, needing less sleep.

But before long, he can’t deny it: Something’s happening to his brain. To his body. He’s starting to see the world, and those around him—even those he loves most—in whole new ways.

The truth is, Logan’s genome has been hacked. And there’s a reason he’s been targeted for this upgrade. A reason that goes back decades to the darkest part of his past, and a horrific family legacy.

Worse still, what’s happening to him is just the first step in a much larger plan, one that will inflict the same changes on humanity at large—at a terrifying cost.

Because of his new abilities, Logan’s the one person in the world capable of stopping what’s been set in motion. But to have a chance at winning this war, he’ll have to become something other than himself. Maybe even something other than human.

And even as he’s fighting, he can’t help wondering: what if humanity’s only hope for a future really does lie in engineering our own evolution?

Intimate in scale yet epic in scope, Upgrade is an intricately plotted, lightning-fast tale that charts one man’s thrilling transformation, even as it asks us to ponder the limits of our humanity—and our boundless potential.]]>

Sycamore Row 17345381 John Grisham takes you back to where it all began . . .

John Grisham's A Time to Kill is one of the most popular novels of our time. Now we return to that famous courthouse in Clanton as Jake Brigance once again finds himself embroiled in a fiercely controversial trial-a trial that will expose old racial tensions and force Ford County to confront its tortured history.

Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier.

The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?

In Sycamore Row, John Grisham returns to the setting and the compelling characters that first established him as America's favorite storyteller. Here, in his most assured and thrilling novel yet, is a powerful testament to the fact that Grisham remains the master of the legal thriller, nearly twenty-five years after the publication of A Time to Kill.]]>

For me, the controversial content (which I cannot specify without spoilers) is presented in a fascinating and moving way. It is not always easy to weave sensitive content into a story, but this volume handles two or three hot button topics pretty perfectly.

The art continues to be fantastic: detailed, beautiful, at times grotesque, always wonderful to look at. I am so glad that this series has kept up a high standard of illustration through eight volumes.

Saga continues to impress and shock. This series is definitely not for everyone and I feel like this issue went farther when it comes to controversial issues and content than any previous issue. It makes it one heck of a ride, but proceed with caution if you offend easily!

The Guest List 55700922 Listening Length: 10 hours 22 minutes

A wedding celebration turns dark and deadly in this deliciously wicked and atmospheric thriller reminiscent of Agatha Christie from the New York Times bestselling author of The Hunting Party.

The bride The plus one The best man The wedding planner The bridesmaid The body

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride’s oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast.

And then someone turns up dead. Who didn’t wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?]]>

Lately I feel like many of the suspense/thriller/mysteries I read are so twisty that it starts to get ridiculous. I love a good twist or two, a shocking revelation or three, but not incomprehensible nonsense. With The Guest List I feel satisfaction because the level of twists and turns is just right and the magnitude of the surprises is not nonsensically bloated. Its nice to finally find one that is just right (like Goldilocks, but hopefully without the angry bears).

I was thinking 4 to 4.5 stars at first, but because this one quenched my thirst for twisty perfection, I am gonna go for 5 stars (it is my review and I can do what I want, so there!

The Midnight Library 54744876 Length: 8 hours 51 minutes

Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices . . . Would you have done anything different, if you had the chance to undo your regrets?

A dazzling novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived, from the internationally bestselling author of Reasons to Stay Alive and How To Stop Time.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig’s enchanting new novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.]]>

I have been sitting here thinking about how to review this book and I don’t want to say too much about it because after 10 pages or so, everything little thing would be a spoiler! That, in itself, should probably pique your interest; it is so packed with interconnected and surprising content I can barely even talk about it! So, just read it because all the stuff that happens is totally worth it . . . I’ll leave it at that.

I was hooked by this book from page one. It is not a long book and because it was written so well, it flew right by. If you are looking for a well written and unique story that I believe will appeal to people with a wide variety of interests, The Midnight Library is worth giving a try.

We Are the Light 60321061 LIFE IS FULL OF GUARDIAN ANGELS.

Lucas Goodgame lives in Majestic, Pennsylvania, a quaint suburb that has been torn apart by a recent tragedy. Everyone in Majestic sees Lucas as a hero—everyone, that is, except Lucas himself. Insisting that his deceased wife, Darcy, visits him every night in the form of an angel, Lucas spends his time writing letters to his former Jungian analyst, Karl. It is only when Eli, an eighteen-year-old young man whom the community has ostracized, begins camping out in Lucas’s backyard that an unlikely alliance takes shape and the two embark on a journey to heal their neighbors and, most important, themselves.

From Matthew Quick, the New York Times bestselling author of The Silver Linings Playbook, We Are the Light is an unforgettable novel about the quicksand of grief and the daily miracle of love. The humorous, soul-baring story of Lucas Goodgame offers an antidote to toxic masculinity and celebrates the healing power of art. In this tale that will stay with you long after the final page is turned, Quick reminds us that guardian angels are all around us—sometimes in the forms we least expect.]]>

Darkness at Noon 7839654 Darkness At Noon stands as an unequaled fictional portrayal of the nightmare politics of our time. Its hero is an aging revolutionary, imprisoned and psychologically tortured by the Party to which he has dedicated his life. As the pressure to confess preposterous crimes increases, he re-lives a career that embodies the terrible ironies and human betrayals of a totalitarian movement masking itself as an instrument of deliverance. Almost unbearably vivid in its depiction of one man's solitary agony, Darkness At Noon asks questions about ends and means that have relevance not only for the past but for the perilous present. It is—as the Times Literary Supplement has declared—"A remarkable book, a grimly fascinating interpretation of the logic of the Russian Revolution, indeed of all revolutionary dictatorships, and at the same time a tense and subtly intellectualized drama..."]]> 0 Arthur Koestler 0788737228 Matthew 4
However, it is a very interesting and thought-provoking book with the theater of politics at its core. Friends become enemies and enemies become friends all depending on which leader is saying what is right and what is wrong at the time. We watch one of the fathers of a political philosophy become one of its victims as a new rank of ideas comes to power. In the process, he becomes jailed with the very people he was responsible for putting there. Also, people he knows become guilty by association even though they really haven’t done anything at all.

Really it is all just one big chess match where nothing has really changed except for perceptions and which people decide which ideas are going to be executed. It would almost be funny if it is not so scary in its consequences.

4 stars for this interesting exploration into political folly. But not something to read if you don’t want to be frustrated and possibly angered by the futility of people killing each other over who has the “right political idea at the time.

<![CDATA[Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2)]]> 50968 341 J.K. Rowling Matthew 4
The last couple of years I keep trying to get back to reading and reviewing and enjoying it all like I did before the beginning of 2020. But, reading feels like a chore almost every time I do it. Most of my reading has been audiobooks when I run errands and go for a walk. One of the books I have been reading I started well over a year ago. This is just not the normal me . . . but I fear it is becoming the normal me.

This is why re-reading the second Harry Potter book has given me a little gimmer of hope. I am reading it out loud to my kids in the evening and they are SO into it. Seeing their enthusiasm with the magic of the written word and getting a chance to have some quality family time as well really gets those book-reading juices flowing. We are planning to start the next one soon and I hope the joy continues; I am pretty sure it will!

Since it has been over 20 years since I originally read this book, and most of what I remember from it was from the movie or other pop culture references, it was nice to get back into it. I will say that they did seem to keep the movie pretty close to the book (we watched it again right after we finished reading). It is nice that they did this because so often book adaptations stray way off the mark.

The book perfectly carries over the story from the first. Maybe a little repetitive at times ([spoilers removed]) but not too much to spoil my enjoyment. I also like the fact that this book is still a “reasonable length. Not that I minded some of the extra content as the books got into the 500+ pages range later on, but the events and the storytelling, for me, are much more to the point in these earlier books. That serves well to keep my interest better than the later entries.

In general, I am sure most people reading this review already have read the book and have seen the movie, so I am not telling you anything you do not already know! I hope you enjoy this series as well and it brings a little magic to you and your family.

Wreck of the Titan 16568602 Those striking similarities can be examined again in this new edition. John Rowland, a disgraced former Royal Navy lieutenant, has taken employment as a lowly deck hand aboard the largest ship ever to have sailed, the Titan.
One night in deep fog, the ship strikes a gigantic iceberg and sinks almost immediately. Hailed in equal measures as a prophetic work and the work of pure coincidence.
Certainly the similarities are striking: two unsinkable ships steam ahead in treacherous conditions, carrying privileged passengers, with insufficient lifeboats aboard.]]>

I thought this would be really interesting and mysteriously spooky as a predictor of the Titanic disaster that occurred years after the publication of this book. However, this is just a so-so mystery/courtroom drama about redemption of one of the main characters where the sinking of the ship is an afterthought to the main storyline. If I wasn’t going in with bigger expectations for the shipwreck being the key event of the story, I may not have minded its barely being included.

Note: This novella was published as “Futility and not changed to “The Wreck of the Titan until right after the Titanic sunk. Talk about cashing in on a tragedy.

Learning about the pitiful life of John Rowland and watching him dig his way out of the hole of his tragic past is interesting and worth giving a shot. But, SERIOUSLY, the ship and it’s sinking are very minor characters/events so PLEASE do not go in expecting anything like the last two hours of the movie Titanic with action and drama as the ship slowly sinks into icy waters. If you go in expecting any more than a couple of pages related to the ship’s sinking, I guarantee disappointment.]]>

Cutting for Stone 13135114
Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon at a mission hospital in Addis Ababa. Orphaned by their mother’s death in childbirth and their father’s disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Yet it will be love, not politics–their passion for the same woman–that will tear them apart and force Marion, fresh out of medical school, to flee his homeland. He makes his way to America, finding refuge in his work as an intern at an underfunded, overcrowded New York City hospital. When the past catches up to him–nearly destroying him–Marion must entrust his life to the two men he thought he trusted least in the world: the surgeon father who abandoned him and the brother who betrayed him.

An unforgettable journey into one man’s remarkable life, and an epic story about the power, intimacy, and curious beauty of the work of healing others.

The first time I heard about this book my brother-in-law and all of his medical school friends were reading it and couldn't say enough about how amazing it was. After reading it and seeing how much of it has to do with medicine and surgery, it makes perfect sense.

I really enjoyed getting to know all the characters and, seeing them deal with the social constructs of mid-20th century Ethiopia. Also, the author pulls no punches when it comes to the heart-wrenching twists and turns they all go through. Very amazing job done by Verghese.

I mention that there is a lot of medical content here. I recently read The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donoghue and I am reminded a lot of that book. What it comes down to is the medical content makes up a large portion of the book and most of it is very graphic - the author does not lighten things up. I think it is good that the harsh realities are shared and it is very important to the story. But, if you are easily queasy or can only stand a little intense medical content here and there, proceed with caution or do not proceed at all.

I have something about this book that I have to get off my chest. It does not detract from my rating and it is not a criticism of the overall quality of the book. I am marking it with a spoiler because I think it gives too much away. [spoilers removed]

Trapped in an apartment open house with six neurotic strangers, a would-be bank robber gets much more than he bargained for in this clever, rollicking, and heartfelt novel that is one-part locked-room mystery and one-part insightful character study from the beloved, bestselling author of A Man Called Ove and Beartown.

This is a story about a hostage drama. But more than that, it’s a story about idiots. That’s why, from the very outset, I need to say that it is always very easy to declare people idiots, but only if you forget that it is also almost always idiotically difficult to be human.

When a failed bank robber escapes into an apartment filled with people during an open house, a group of six strangers are suddenly forced to get to know one another quickly and under extreme circumstances. But what will be the result?

In captivity we meet Roger and Anna-Lena, a recently retired couple who are on a manic hunt for fixer-uppers because they don’t know how to fix their own marriage. They have the distinction of shopping at every Ikea in Sweden—and those are some of the most romantic moments they ever shared. Then there is Zara, a wealthy director of a bank who has never cared for poor people or their problems (and isn’t shy about saying so). But when tragedy strikes in her life, she becomes addicted to visiting real-estate open houses to see how the middle-classes live—and possibly to find a suitable place to commit suicide. Julia and Danijela are a young lesbian couple with a newborn baby who can’t agree on anything. Their opposite and idiosyncratic home preferences are making them increasingly anxious about their chances of spending a lifetime together. And Estelle, an eighty-year-old woman who has lived long enough to be unimpressed by some bank robber waving a gun in her face. Despite the story she tells them all, Estelle hasn’t really come to the apartment to view it for her daughter, and her husband really isn’t outside parking the car.

As police surround the premises and television channels are broadcasting live, the pressure of an increasingly tense situation mounts, causing each person to reveal more and more about themselves to each other. Before long, the robber must decide which is the more terrifying prospect: going out to face the police, or staying in the apartment with this group of impossible people.

A riotous comedy, Anxious People is about a crime that never took place, a would-be bank robber who disappears into thin air, and a group of very anxious people who experience exactly the same events in wildly different ways.]]>

Malorie (Bird Box, #2) 54242604
In the thrilling sequel to Bird Box, the inspiration for the record-breaking Netflix film that starred Sandra Bullock and “absolutely riveted Stephen King, New York Times bestselling author Josh Malerman brings unseen horrors to life.

Twelve years after Malorie and her children rowed up the river to safety, a blindfold is still the only thing that stands between sanity and madness. One glimpse of the creatures that stalk the world will drive a person to unspeakable violence.

There remains no explanation. No solution.

All Malorie can do is survive—and impart her fierce will to do so on her children. Don’t get lazy, she tells them. Don’t take off your blindfold. AND DON’T LOOK.

But then comes what feels like impossible news. And with it, the first time Malorie has allowed herself to hope.

Someone very dear to her, someone she believed dead, may be alive.

Malorie has already lost so much: her sister, a house full of people who meant everything, and any chance at an ordinary life. But getting her life back means returning to a world full of unknowable horrors—and risking the lives of her children again.

Because the creatures are not the only thing Malorie fears: There are the people who claim to have caught and experimented on the creatures. Murmerings of monstrous inventions and dangerous new ideas. And rumors that the creatures themselves have changed into something even more frightening.

Malorie has a harrowing choice to make: to live by the rules of survival that have served her so well, or to venture into the darkness and reach for hope once more.]]>

Not quite as solid and groundbreaking as Bird Box. More of an extended epilogue to give a few more answers and perhaps a bit of resolution. I cannot say that I felt deeply satisfied with the experience, but it was interesting and will probably hold the attention those who really got into the mystery of Bird Box.

This book was released in mid-2020 and I really wonder how much of it Malerman had worked out after the COVID-19 pandemic started. The discussions and opinions about blindfolds in the book is very similar to the wide range of public response to face masks. So, perhaps a thinly veiled commentary (pun fully intended!)

In closing, not a wide, sweeping, and intricate narrative. Pretty basic plot, but it fills in a lot of the blanks left after Bird Box. If you enjoyed being left to wonder "why?" and "what happened?", maybe just leave this one unread and revel in the mystery of the first book. But, if you want some more answers, give this one a go!

You might find the experience "eye opening"!!! (I'm here all week, folks!)

Family, religion, drugs, the legal system, and putting everything on the line when you have no idea what the best choice is . . .

This is a “What would you do if faced with a difficult decision story. And, with multiple lives and the future at stake, the reader is left with a lot to keep them occupied throughout. I think fans of family-based drama (specifically people with close sisterly-bonds) will be enthralled by this story. In fact, if you have sisters and your relationship with them is strained, this book could hit very close to home for you.

Overall, this book is gut-wrenching but it was the difficulty of the circumstances that kept me intrigued. Be aware that if you are sensitive, there is a lot here that might be tough to swallow. But, if you can, in the end the whole package is rewarding and will leave you with a lot to think about.

The writing I think this would have worked better as a short story. Even thought it was not a very long book, it felt very repetitive and drawn out. Because of this, I don’t think the suspense and thrills really ended up being all that suspenseful or thrilling.

The plot I cannot say too much about the plot without giving it away, but I will say that I thought the main crux of the plot was very interesting, unique, and frightening. If only it had been delivered better!

The characters All of them were so flat. Even by the end of the book I had some issues distinguishing characters and what their part was in the plot because nothing about any of them stood out. There is not really any character development (except they become angrier versions of themselves from time to time). If you like books with dynamic characters, you can skip this one.

If you really like horror, stories based on archeological digs (you know, Indiana Jones type stuff), survival in the face of very bad odds, then you may like this story. I do not strongly recommend it, but it did remind me of books that I love from those genres.

I am going to go 4 stars, but I want to stress that through a lot of it I was leaning heavily towards three and, at times, even two.

The book starts off well, but the middle is mired in unbelievable plot twists and confusing dialogue. The reason that it ramped back up to 4 after the middle is that there was an a-ha moment near the climax of the story that actually made me vocalize “OH DANG! and from that point on I was back into it. When I have a physical or vocal reaction to a book, it gets a star back!

Should you read it?

Do you like McManus other works? Do you enjoy teen drama TV shows? Do you ask for extra cheese on your pizza? Yes, you should

Do you not like books with a lot of cheese, unbelievable twists, and convoluted dialogue that might make it difficult to stay focused through the middle of the book? Then you should proceed with caution!

A Noise Downstairs 36339629
The New York Times bestselling author of No Time for Goodbye returns with a haunting psychological thriller that blends the twists and turns of Gillian Flynn with the driving suspense of Harlan Coben, in which a man is troubled by odd sounds for which there is no rational explanation.

College professor Paul Davis is a normal guy with a normal life. Until, driving along a deserted road late one night, he surprises a murderer disposing of a couple of bodies. That’s when Paul’s "normal" existence is turned upside down. After nearly losing his own life in that encounter, he finds himself battling PTSD, depression, and severe problems at work. His wife, Charlotte, desperate to cheer him up, brings home a vintage typewriter—complete with ink ribbons and heavy round keys—to encourage him to get started on that novel he’s always intended to write.

However, the typewriter itself is a problem. Paul swears it’s possessed and types by itself at night. But only Paul can hear the noise coming from downstairs; Charlotte doesn’t hear a thing. And she worries he’s going off the rails.

Paul believes the typewriter is somehow connected to the murderer he discovered nearly a year ago. The killer had made his victims type apologies to him before ending their lives. Has another sick twist of fate entwined his life with the killer—could this be the same machine?ĚýIncreasingly tormented but determined to discover the truth and confront his nightmare, Paul begins investigating the deaths himself.

But that may not be the best thing to do. Maybe Paul should just take the typewriter back to where his wife found it. Maybe he should stop asking questions and simply walk away while he can. . .]]>

I read this with one of my book clubs so there was a lot of introspection and opinion sharing along the way. I enjoy the additional thinking my book clubs make me do! And, honestly, the discussion makes this review feel more like a defense of my 4 star rating than just a straight up 4 star review.

Through my discussions with my club and in looking at some other reviews, there is a pretty diverse opinion on the story, plot points, and the twists in this book. And, while I agree at times it can seem a bit cheesy, convenient, and predictable, I was fully entertained throughout and did not want to stop reading. When a book pulls me in that much, I can easily forgive some things that might bug me in other situations.

With that being said, if you like twisty thrillers, I think this one is worth checking out. It will definitely keep you guessing . . . then make you think you have figured it out . . . and then it will throw you for another loop. And, while you might truly figure out the mystery on your own, the ride to find out that you were right is worth it!

In conclusion, if you end up thinking it is too cheesy and predictable . . . you were warned! ]]>

In Washington D.C., thirty-seven-year-old Gwendy Peterson couldn't be more different from the self-conscious teenaged girl who once spent a summer running up Castle Rock's Suicide Stairs. That same summer, she was entrusted or some might say cursed with the extraordinary button box by Richard Farris, the mysterious stranger in the black suit. The seductive and powerful box offered Gwendy small gifts in exchange for its care and feeding until Farris eventually returned, promising Gwendy she'd never see the box again.

One day, though, the button box shows up without warning and without Richard Farris to explain why, or what she's supposed to do with it. The mysterious reappearance of the box, along with the troubling disappearances in Castle Rock, leads Gwendy home again...where she just might be able to help rescue the missing girls and stop a madman before he does something ghastly.

From New York Times bestseller Richard Chizmar comes Gwendy's Magic Feather, a breathtaking novel that asks whether our lives are controlled by fate or the choices we make and what price we might have to pay for those choices when we reach for the things we most desire. Prepare to return again to Stephen King's Castle Rock, the sleepy little town built on a bedrock of deep, dark secrets, which is about to awaken from its quiet slumber once more.]]>

Interesting build up!

Fascinating plot!

Mysterious characters!

Fell completely flat at the end!

Suddenly over . . .

Convenient and uninteresting resolution . . .

Huge build up for nothing but meh . . .

So sad because so much potential early on and I mean SO MUCH POTENTIAL!

I was still hooked at page 300!

And . . . then . . . it was just over . . .

Blah . . .

Seriously . . . I am frustrated about how little I got out of this after such a huge build up!

I was gonna go two stars, but I am so frustrated by the waste of 300 or so great pages.

I gave the first book 5 stars don’t even bother with this one.

747 Stephen King Matthew 3 Tommyknockers on my reread 3 stars

I remembered this not being one of my favorite Stephen King books and I remembered correctly.

Even Stephen King regards this as one of his least favorite novels. He was quoted in a Rolling Stone interview as saying it “is an awful book. I may not go that far, but I cannot say that it is great, either.

For me, it just never gets really going. At times it feels like the plot is moving towards a breakthrough, but then it just stagnates. And, because the book is so long, the stagnation leads to repetition. If this book had been half as long, I think it would have been much better.

I wouldn’t really recommend this book to new King readers, and I wouldn’t recommend it to King fans. I would only recommend this to hardcore Stephen King completists.

Survive the Night 56023231
It’s November 1991. George H. W. Bush is in the White House, Nirvana's in the tape deck, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer.

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie. They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. Both have good reasons for wanting to get away. For Charlie, it’s guilt and grief over the murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer. For Josh, it’s to help care for his sick father. Or so he says. Like the Hitchcock heroine she’s named after, Charlie has her doubts. There’s something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn’t seem to want Charlie to see inside the car’s trunk. As they travel an empty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly worried Charlie begins to think she’s sharing a car with the Campus Killer. Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie’s suspicion merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

What follows is a game of cat-and-mouse played out on night-shrouded roads and in neon-lit parking lots, during an age when the only call for help can be made on a pay phone and in a place where there's nowhere to run. In order to win, Charlie must do one thing - survive the night.]]>

I enjoyed this entry in the Will Trent series. I don’t remember much about the second book in the series, but I do remember I didn’t really care for it as much as previous Slaughter titles so I was worried that maybe this would not be the series for me. But, with the ties back to Grant County and the uniquely bizarre mystery I was able to stay invested in this one. Also, one thing that sometimes turns me off to mysteries that did not happen with this one is that it did not seem to become intentionally convoluted and confusing. Often, I feel like authors figure if they make the mystery as confusing as possible it will constitute a good book. Or maybe I am just easily confused!

But another player has entered the game: a loser ex-con who has stumbled upon the killer's trail in the most coincidental of ways—someone who may be the key to breaking the case wide open...]]>
393 Karin Slaughter Matthew 5
I will follow that by saying she goes to some pretty dark and disturbing places. I almost feel bad enjoying her stories as much as I do! But that is the thing with a good escape, it often takes you places you may not normally be comfortable going. You know . . . pushing the limits can be quite a ride!

With Triptych, Slaughter starts a new series with protagonist Will Trent. He is a very interesting character that I am glad to know I am not done with yet. He was fleshed out so well that I want to know more and see him in action. And, in addition to Will being an interesting character all the characters from this book are wonderfully flawed. Whether their flaws make them tragic heroes or twisted maniacs, they are all fun to read about. I love the way she introduces each of them and then fills the reader in with their back stories (one backstory went on for so long, I started to forget about the main story but that was just fine!). And, none of the characters are plain vanilla or cookie cutter all are unique like nothing I have read before.

Back to my comment about pushing the limits. I love her writing and her books, but Slaughter always goes almost too far with her plot devices. Some readers may be put off by this. So, if you do not like your crime novels gory and your sexual situations kind of twisted, this may not be the book for you. But I will say that even though she gets pretty extreme, it always feels like it fits. I don’t get this feeling like she forced a scenario in for shock value. That, to me, is a sign of a great writer.

If you give it a shot, I think you will be enthralled. But, don’t say I didn’t warn you!]]>

I will start by saying that Karin Slaughter is a pretty darn good thriller writer

And Then There Were None is a classic whodunit that keeps you guessing until the very end. It is stories like this that I am sure twisty auteurs like M. Night Shyamalan get their inspiration from. I hesitate to say too much, lest I give any secrets away. Just know that it is a short and fast paced mystery that benefits from being shorter in length because the quick progression of events adds to the suspense and urgency.

Also, I kept thinking of the movie Clue as I read this book. If you are familiar with the movie, let me know if the same happened to you while reading this. It makes me want to go do some research and see if any of the inspiration for the movie (and the board game, perhaps) came from this story.

141 Truman Capote Matthew 4 2016, kindle, own, classic

I have never seen the movie (update: I finally did see the movie shortly after reading the book), so the only idea I had in my mind is this iconic image of Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly:

But, what I actually got was this:

Holly is crass and obnoxious with really no redeeming qualities. She is rude to her enemies, and even worse to her friends. She smokes to excess, drinks to excess, is promiscuous to excess - she is just wild, crazy, and destructive.

Reading this was like watching a train wreck - but I kind of liked it. I couldn't look away!]]>

Don Quixote 17937443
With its experimental form and literary playfulness, Don Quixote generally has been recognized as the first modern novel. The book has had enormous influence on a host of writers, from Fielding and Sterne to Flaubert, Dickens, Melville, and Faulkner, who reread it once a year, "just as some people read the Bible."]]>
40 Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra Matthew 4
I did enjoy the Don Quixote experience quite a bit. In general, it was slapstick comedy and tongue-in-cheek humor but, there were a lot of literary acrobatics, word play, etc. taking place as well to keep me interested, guessing, and thinking as a reader. At times it did get a little bit repetitive, but I guess that it to be expected with such a large book.

The book is in two parts, and I believe when people read it today it is almost always considered one book. But, when I read a bit about the background, I discovered the first part was originally released as its own book with the second following several years later. I did feel like the two were quite different from each other and I did like the first part much better than the second. Most of the dragging and repetition I encountered came during the second part.

Overall, a great experience but it does take a lot of time to make it through. It is 100% worth it if you like the Epic classics!

Oh, and the windmill thing . . . takes up only a page or two. It is interesting that it has come to define this character and story as a whole!

The three Legends of the Riftwar titles return to Feist’s bestselling kingdom of Midkemia. Set during the infamous Riftwar, each title, co-written with another well-respected fantasy author, tells a story tangential to the action of the Riftwar Saga, with cameo appearances from Feist’s most beloved characters.
Jimmy the Hand was a Featured Alternate Selection of the Science Fiction Book Club.

Jimmy the Hand is a bit of a misnomer title. Jimmy a well known character from the Riftwar Series (the first four Feist books) is indeed a character in this story that is one of his first adventures in the Riftwar era before most of the events that readers already know even happened. However, I would say that in the end, Jimmy is a minor character and most of the major plot points have nothing to do with him. I feel like Feist’s collaborator on this one (S.M. Stirling) already had the plot fully fleshed out without Jimmy in it and, when he got a chance to collaborate with Feist he just shoved Jimmy in there to make the connection to the original storyline. The story is pretty good, it is just that it has so little to do with Jimmy it is odd that he is the name of the book.

All in all, a decent read . . . especially for those looking for a little Riftwar nostalgia after being more than a dozen books removed from that time period.

I have slowed down a bit on my progress through the works of Raymond Feist; it did take me almost a year to read this one (which is a bit crazy for a book that isn’t even 400 pages). I would like to think that this does not relate to any reduction in the quality of the story, but the last few books have been very different from the books early on in the series. Some might blame the fact that the last few may have suffered because they are collaborations. However, early on Feist collaborated with Jenny Wurts and those books were fantastic. My final thoughts on it are that, while they are different and maybe not quite as good, the main reason for my slowness is the reading slumps I have gone through over the past few years due to the pandemic and various other personal factors.

Jimmy the Hand is a bit of a misnomer title. Where the Red Fern Grows 526787
Billy's pups are his "shadow," following his every move through the dark hills and icy river bottoms in search of the elusive raccoons. The three gain a fine reputation as an inseparable team when they win the coveted gold cup in the annual coon-hunt contest, capture the deceptive ghost coon, and, in the most difficult battle of all, put up a fierce struggle against a mountain lion.

But the victory over the mountain lion turns to tragedy, and Billy's days of freedom and innocent boyhood rapidly end. Yet much remains for Billy: he not only has his wonderful memories, but he learns a beautiful old Indian legend which gives them sacred meaning.

As it has for generations, this modern classic is sure to warm the hearts of young and old alike.

The only place I could see this story being a problem for some readers is that it is very much a period piece. Set in rural early 1900s America, it could prove difficult to connect to. If you think this could be a show stopper, proceed with caution. But, if it is something that you can work around, there is a lot to love here.

Another important part of this book is dogs and a boy’s love for his dogs. I am not much of a dog person, but I was still able to enjoy this book. If you are a dog person, I think you will connect with it even more!

If you have had this book on your to read list for a long time like I did, maybe now is the time to check it out!]]>

I finally got to this classic book and it did not disappoint. For years I have wanted to read it with many of my friends and family having read it back in elementary/middle school and talking about how good it is. Circling the Sun 23995231 366 Paula McLain 0345534182 Matthew 4
While it has been a long time since I read The Paris Wife, I remember liking it a bit more than Circling the Sun. In fact, Paris Wife is what encouraged me to try several Ernest Hemingway novels. If I had not already read it, Circling the Sun may have encouraged me to read Out of Africa as its author is one of the main characters. In fact, it probably comes as no surprise once you know that, Circling has a very similar feel to Out of Africa.

Why did I enjoy this a little bit less than Paris Wife, you ask?

At times, I found it to be a bit slow and repetitive. Not so bad that I was yelling “get to the point! or “yes, I know, we have covered that! But it was enough that I parts could have wrapped up quicker and the reader still could have got the point.

However . . .

As a period piece, the atmosphere and background described our wonderful. The series of anecdotes within the main story keep it moving along and really help the reader understand life in that time period. While I have not done my own research to confirm this, it seems like McLain did amazing research to keep this true to the time period and these real people.

If you are a historical fiction buff, enjoyed McLain’s other work, and/or enjoyed Out of Africa, this book is worth checking out.

It did not take me long to get through Hatchet during my daily lunchtime walks. It held my interest throughout, but probably wasn’t even long enough to lose it! It is definitely geared toward pre and early teens however, there are a couple of more difficult topics (like death and survival) that this might be a kids first introduction to (unless they are like me and started reading Stephen King at 12!) If my kids decide to try this one out, I will be there for them if they have any questions about it.

Should you read this book? It is not bad for a quick read, but it may prove to be too simple for some peoples tastes. If you can adjust your mindset and think of it like a 10- to 13-year-old would, I think you will appreciate it more. One of my first jobs was at a bookstore. When I was a kid my Mom would take me to the mall and I would spend tons of time hanging out at Waldenbooks (who here remembers Waldenbooks?) Right when I became legally old enough to work, I went in and submitted my application and a few weeks later I was selling literature to the masses.

Why do I tell you this story on this review, you ask? Well, at the time, young adult/teen literature consisted mainly of RL Stein, Christopher Pike, Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, and a few other classic Newberry Award winners, but certainly we did not have a YA section to the extent you see it today.

Towards the end of my tenure at Waldenbooks - as Oprah's book club was hitting its stride and Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus was in its bazzilionth week on the New York Times best seller list - a book display arrived featuring a buzzy new title about a certain boy wizard. I remember the display at the front of the store, and selling a few copies, but I didn't realize what it would become.

A few years later (early 2000s), I had kinda gotten out of the loop on what was big in books. I had just finished college, which had taken up most of my free reading time. A friend of mine named Bronco (yup, real name, not a nickname, who also was the Best Man at my wedding) had a copy of this book on his coffee table. Holy cow! Here is that same book we were selling at Waldenbooks about 5 years before - what was he doing with it!?

Well, he said it was good, so I borrowed it. I quickly plowed through the first 4 books and then got the pleasure of joining the world in waiting for the release of Order of the Phoenix. And, I noticed when I went to the bookstore, the YA section and selection was not so small anymore. The final book in the 'New York Times' best-selling Gwendy's Button Box trilogy from Stephen King and Richard Chizmar.

When Gwendy Peterson was 12, a mysterious stranger named Richard Farris gave her a mysterious box for safekeeping. It offered treats and vintage coins, but it was dangerous. Pushing any of its seven colored buttons promised death and destruction.

Years later, the button box entered Gwendy’s life again. A successful novelist and a rising political star, she was once again forced to deal with the temptation that box represented.

Now, evil forces seek to possess the button box and it is up to Senator Gwendy Peterson to keep it from them. At all costs. But where can you hide something from such powerful entities?

In 'GWENDY'S FINAL TASK', , Stephen King and Richard Chizmar take us on a journey from Castle Rock to another famous cursed Maine city to the MF-1 space station, where Gwendy must execute a secret mission to save the world. And, maybe, all worlds.

8 Stephen King Matthew 4
I must admit I am glad I did. It was much better than the second book and a fitting end to the story.

A mix of mystery, sci-fi, and horror; it has all the elements you love from Stephen King. His collaboration with Chizmar was very good on this and I wonder how much of it is King and how much of it is Chizmar. Something I read previously (don’t ask me to site my source because I honestly don’t remember) led me to believe this series is mostly Chizmar with King mainly serving as inspiration. I cannot say if that is truly the case, but it would make sense.

One maybe “complaint is that this book gets very political. I didn’t used to have an issue with politics in books, but after the past few years I am exhausted by it and want my books to be an escape. You are definitely not escaping modern political opinions in this one. I am not going to focus on which side of things the politics fall in this book (I am bet all of you probably can guess which way they fall) because all of it exhausts me!

So, politics aside, it is a better book than the second one, has a good ending, and I am 100% glad I finished this adventure. Should you try the trilogy? I am not sure that I can recommend it, but I am also not sure I can discourage you. At least each of the books are short so if you get to a place you just don’t feel like it is working for you, at least you will have not committed too much time to it!

I was not sure if I would finish the Gwendy trilogy. I really liked the first book but did not care much for the second one. If it was not for the fact that this book was available on Overdrive when I was looking for something to listen to, I am not sure I would have given it a shot.

<![CDATA[Death Comes for the Archbishop]]> 36338757 8 Willa Cather Matthew 5
I listened to this book in its entirety in one sitting on the road coming back from Spring Break. The storytelling and the characters were a great way to pass the time and end a fantastic vacation. I wish all books I try as “road books ended up being this good because I have encountered some that try their best to put me to sleep!

The structure of the plot is a series of short stories all taking place in the world of missionaries in the American Southwest during the expansion of the country. The story is influenced by a lot of real-life circumstances involving cultural clashes, native people, cowboys/frontiersmen, and old religion vs new religion. The characters you meet along the way are extremely interesting and extremely fascinating to follow on their journey.

One thing I think I appreciated the most about this book is that it is quick and too the point. Often it seems like these classics drag things out unnecessarily and it starts to get kind of bloated and boring. Cather sticks to what is important and keeps the story moving along which is I think is much better than overdoing it with excess exposition.

You should give this one a try I hope you will be pleasantly surprised as well!

This book was a very pleasant surprise! Not that I was expecting I wouldn’t like it, I just never know with classics on must read lists. Often it is hard for me to determine what about the book gets people excited about it or what exactly made it a classic. With Death Comes for the Archbishop, it was not difficult to see the appeal at all!

Big Little Lies 26007349
A murder . . . a tragic accident . . . or just parents behaving badly?
What’s indisputable is that someone is dead.
But who did what?

Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:

Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).

Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.

New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.

Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.]]>

I liked the structure of the story where we are given hints of the outcome throughout the book. We know from the beginning that there is a major climax without knowing the specifics. Also, this book made me a bit ashamed to be a man I swear we don’t all suck! ]]>

I give this one 4.5 stars and it might be my favorite one in the series so far. Part of the reason for that is that, while the other two are good, I think it usually takes a few books for a series to get settled in. The story is very intriguing and mysterious. The plot is action packed. There is the always appreciated tongue in cheek humor.

If you like Preston & Child but haven’t started this series yet . . . you should. If you liked the first two Nora and Corrie books and are wondering if you should continue . . . you should!

When you start this book, I guarantee you will have no idea what it will become. As it progresses, a wide variety of complex mysteries, interesting relationships, and heart-wrenching storylines combine to keep the reader engaged. This book has no filler and no downtime.

This is one of those books that when it is done I realize I have a longing to really meet these characters and talk to them. For me, I enjoy many books without feeling this so, when it does happen, it is the sign of some great characters and great writing.

Categorically, I could see this fitting into the following categories and might be enjoyed by fans of any of these:

- Young Adult
- Mystery
- Cryptography
- Computer-based Sci-Fi
- Disease-based heart string pullers
- Family Epic
- 20th Century Historical Fiction
- And a couple of others that would be a bit spoiler-ish to mention

Again, it has a lot! Very worth checking out!]]>

The Eyes of the Dragon 655707
The passage through the castle is dim, sensed by few and walked by only one. Flagg knows the way well. In four hundred years, he has walked it many times, in many guises, but now the passage serves its true purpose. Through the spyhole it conceals, the court magician observes King Roland--old, weak, yet still a king. Roland's time is nearly over, though, and young Prince Peter, tall and handsome, the measure of a king in all ways, stands to inherit the realm.

Yet a tiny mouse is enough to bring him down, a mouse that chances upon a grain of Dragon Sand behind Peter's shelves and dies crying tears of fire and belching gray smoke. A mouse that dies as King Roland does. Flagg saw it all and smiled, for now Prince Thomas, a young boy easily swayed to Flagg's own purposes, would rule the kingdom. But Thomas has a secret that has turned his days into nightmares and his nights into prayed-for oblivion. The last bastion of hope lies at the top of the Needle, the royal prison where Peter plans a daring escape...]]>

I will start by saying I loved it again. It is a great fantasy book with an interesting premise that does not get bogged down in complex world building. He originally wrote it for his daughter, Naomi, so he kept it at a YA sort of level (before YA was officially a thing). And, there is a lot to tie it into the Stephen King Universe - so, fans who enjoy all the intricacies of his books being connected must read this.

I will follow up that by saying I liked it better the first time. I think it might the a nostalgia thing - remembering a really great book experience and then not quite feeling it the next time. It happens to me a lot with movies from the 80s as well. When I watched or read as a kid/teen I was blown away. But, when I go back to find the same magic it is not quite there.

But, that is only a minor issue - as I said, I still loved it!

Note on the audiobook:. I usually love Bronson Pinchot as a narrator and he does a lot of King books. But, he made a big audio narrator mistake (at least in my book). Most of the dialogue of Flagg was whispered and it drove me crazy. I had to rewind several times to figure out what he was saying. I know he was trying to create atmosphere, but this dialogue did not have to be whispered to make that happen.]]>

Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett’s future.

Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles’s third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes.]]>
17 Amor Towles 0593452100 Matthew 3
First of all, this book is called The Lincoln Highway and the cover features a car on a road by a train. To me, looks like a road trip book reminiscent of On the Road maybe . . . with the spirt of Route 66 perhaps. Well, that is my fault for judging a book by its cover and title. It is a road trip book of sorts, but not the one you are led to believe you are getting into in the beginning. Also, The Lincoln Highway itself barely plays a part in the whole book just being mentioned a few times and gives the reader the anticipation that you are eventually going to get to it. But, spoiler alert . . . you never do.

It's not all negative, though. I do enjoy Towles storytelling. I think if I had approached this book thinking of it as a series of tied together vignettes (sometimes tied very loosely), I would have enjoyed it a lot more. It is almost as if he had a bunch of ideas for characters with interesting backstories and tried his best to incorporate them all into one book. So, if you are reading my review before you read this book, keep this in mind and I think you will enjoy it a whole lot more.

In summary . . . still a good book but my experience tainted by it never really living up to my expectations.

I am giving this book 3 stars because I was expecting so much more. And, maybe the author accomplished what he was going for with this book, but after his book A Gentleman in Moscow and the expectations I got from the first fourth (or so) of this book, it felt like it tapered off into rambling inconsistency. It wasn’t hard to follow, but I am still not quite sure what I read.

Salman Rushdie 1456108247 Matthew 4
Overall I would give this book 3.5 to 4 stars.

I don’t really know a lot about the history of India, so it was interesting to learn about mid-20th Century India through this book. I cannot say that I know if Rushdie did a good job of being historically accurate but, it sure feels like he did and I have not seen any complaints hinting at the contrary.

There was a lot of magical realism and mysticism in the story. In general I tend to really like magical realism. There are a few authors who use magical realism a lot that do not click with me - the main one that comes to mind is Gabriel García Márquez. And, having read One Hundred Years of Solitude recently, Midnight’s Children had a very similar feeling to it. In fact, I would not be surprised if I were to hear that Rushdie was trying to write this book in the same vein. However, and not that I can quantify it in any particular way, I liked Midnight’s Children more than Solitude . . . maybe I just found it more accessible?

Should you read this book?

If you are working your way through the classics and are ready for an epic and complex book definitely!

If you are not ready for something heavy, extensive, a bit odd, and requiring focused thought, you may want to wait. I go back to the fact that I read this for a book club during a slump if it was not for that, I think I would have stopped and saved this until my head was in a better and more focused place.

I got a comment on this review today hinting at the fact that it is taking me months to finish the last 5% and that sounds like a bad deal . . . so, I figured it is about time I finally write my review. I did finish this book back in October, but I have not been all that inspired to write a review. That is partially a product of a year+ long book slump I have been going through. It is also partially because this was a very big book with lots to absorb and, because I was slumping, I am not really sure I can do it justice. So, you may want to take my review of this with a grain of salt as I am not sure it would reflect my experience with it during a better year.

También de este lado hay sueños. On this side, too, there are dreams.

Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable.

Even though she knows they’ll never sell, Lydia stocks some of her all-time favorite books in her store. And then one day a man enters the shop to browse and comes up to the register with a few books he would like to buy—two of them her favorites. Javier is erudite. He is charming. And, unbeknownst to Lydia, he is the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Forced to flee, Lydia and eight-year-old Luca soon find themselves miles and worlds away from their comfortable middle-class existence. Instantly transformed into migrants, Lydia and Luca ride la bestia—trains that make their way north toward the United States, which is the only place Javier’s reach doesn’t extend. As they join the countless people trying to reach el norte, Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to?]]>

American Dirt is a story of normal people dealing with the unfairness of real-world horrors that they are forced to face; people like you and me whose only mistake was being born somewhere where day to day life is scary and chaotic. If you are blessed to live somewhere where you don’t have to live in fear every day, you will feel even more blessed after reading this book.

I found the story and the plight of the main characters to be very intriguing. Much of the plot harkens back to other books with migrant stories like Grapes of Wrath. So, if you have read books like those before, chances are you will have a similar experience with this book. I cannot use the word “enjoy with a book like this because the plot points are so shocking and sometimes hard to read, but it was well done and kept me interested throughout.

Worth the read but proceed knowing that a lot of what you will read is unfair and frustrating . . . and even more difficult because it is based on things that are really happening right now in our world.

review:
I believe American Dirt had some controversy around it. As the world is so full of controversy right now, I didn’t dig into what the controversy was so I could just focus on the book. Maybe someday I will look into it further.

Under the Skin 22038886
A "fascinating psychological thriller" (Baltimore Sun), this entrancing novel introduces Isserley, a female driver who scouts the Scottish Highlands for male hitchhikers with big muscles. She herself is tiny—like a kid peering up over the steering wheel. Scarred and awkward, yet strangely erotic and threatening, Isserley listens to her passengers as they open up to her, revealing clues about who might miss them should they disappear—and then she strikes. What happens to her victims next is only part of a terrifying reality.

At once humane and horrifying, Under the Skin takes us on a heart-thumping ride through dangerous territory: our own moral instincts and the boundaries of compassion. A grotesque and comical allegory and a surreal representation of contemporary society run amok, Under the Skin was internationally received as the arrival of an exciting talent, rich and assured.]]>

First, I will say that the story is very unique. While it does borrow some common tropes from horror and books trying to make social statements, overall, I have never read anything quite like it. And, because what is happening in the plot is very mysterious, every twist and turn brought something that I did not see coming (or could have even imagined).

Which brings me to . . .

Second, the bizarre-ness that I have already mentioned is so twisted and jaw dropping, it was like being a bystander watching the oddest car wreck ever; I couldn’t look away, but I could barely watch. Wondering what the next disturbing thing would be kept this book moving right along for me.

Third, there is a lot between the lines with this book. You could read this just for the story and leave it at that. But, if you are looking for political and social commentary, it is oozing out from the background. This book could easily lead to a lot of heated debates.

If I officially recommend this, you might wonder what is wrong with me. But it is intriguing and, if you have a strong stomach for the sick and twisted, you may enjoy riding with Isserley . . . just stick your thumb out, I am sure she will be by soon to pick you up!

I finished reading it back in October and it is now January 2022 and I am finally writing my review. Usually these Preston & Child buddy reads are right at the top of my list and I make sure I get to the library months in advance so that I am first in line for a copy. In this case, both the buddy read and release date caught me by surprise and I ended up way down the wait list. Because of that, I was way behind on the buddy read during a year I was struggling to find interest in even opening a book at all. I know that there is much greater suffering in the world, but this situation was unusual and uncomfortable to me.

So . . . my difficulty in getting into this book and the delay in writing the review does not reflect my enjoyment of this book! While it had some unconventional twists and turns for Preston & Child when telling the Pendergast story, it was still very suspenseful, action-packed, and thought-provoking. One of the best enhancers for this book was that it is set in Savannah, Georgia, and I happened to take a trip there right in the middle of reading this. Going to some locations on the same day I was reading about them in the book was really cool.

If you love P&C and Pendergast . . . keep going with the series and try Bloodless. If you have never read P&C/Pendergast before . . . so back and start with Relic. I think there is too much in this book related to the backstory to read this one as a stand alone.

The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress 12355534 15 Robert A. Heinlein Matthew 4 “Seems to be a deep instinct in human beings for making everything compulsory that isn't forbidden.

Politics and space . . . not a surprise when reading Heinlein. With his writing will always be some very interesting sci-fi space travel, action, etc., but the political allegory is also always there. And, while some authors hide the point they are making under the story, I feel like Heinlein unapologetically puts his right on the surface. Sometimes this has not worked for me (I was not a huge fan of Stranger in a Strange Land), but with The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, I found the balance perfect; not only was I entertained by the sci-fi, but it made me think without feeling like I was being preached at (too much).

But as you can see with the quote below . . . as I said . . . it is right there on the surface!

“A rational anarchist believes that concepts such as "state" and "society" and "government" have no existence save as physically exemplified in the acts of self-responsible individuals. He believes that it is impossible to shift blame, share blame, distribute blame. . . as blame, guilt, responsibility are matters taking place inside human beings singly and nowhere else. But being rational, he knows that not all individuals hold his evaluations, so he tries to live perfectly in an imperfect world. . . aware that his effort will be less than perfect yet undismayed by self-knowledge of self-failure.

If you like just straight up action sci-fi to mainly escape with for a while, Heinlein may not be for you. But if you are a fan of a bit of political introspection in the midst of your Artificial Intelligence and laser battles, this book is worth trying.

The Things We Cannot Say 43215617
In 1942, Europe remains in the relentless grip of war. Just beyond the tents of the Russian refugee camp she calls home, a young woman speaks her wedding vows. It's a decision that will alter her destiny...and it's a lie that will remain buried until the next century.

Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now fifteen and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina's tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears. Where Alina used to measure time between visits from her beloved, now she measures the spaces between hope and despair, waiting for word from Tomasz and avoiding the attentions of the soldiers who patrol her parents' farm. But for now, even deafening silence is preferable to grief.

Slipping between Nazi-occupied Poland and the frenetic pace of modern life, Kelly Rimmer creates an emotional and finely wrought narrative that weaves together two women's stories into a tapestry of perseverance, loyalty, love and honor. The Things We Cannot Say is an unshakable reminder of the devastation when truth is silenced...and how it can take a lifetime to find our voice before we learn to trust it.]]>

338 Stephen King Matthew 4
Original rating: Four Stars
2022 Reread rating: Four Stars (maybe 4.5)

I cannot remember specifically how long ago I read this, but Misery is one of those King books that is never far away from my thoughts. I would even risk saying that it is probably one of King’s most iconic and pop culturally relevant books due to the 1990 movie with James Caan and Kathy Bates. It is because of that that it is one of those King stories you know even if you never even read it. (The other one in my mind most like that is Carrie).

This is a truly suspenseful book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Some parts are a bit repetitive, but that seems to be more to drag out the suspense than anything else. Also, it is one of those books you might find yourself cheering, booing, and/or screaming out loud at as you read.

Often, in my reviews, I mention whether I think first time King readers would enjoy/if the book is a good place for new King readers to start. With the plot, you will find a few iconic King tropes (mainly the main character being a writer) and it is not one of his sprawling books (like The Stand or IT) that might be a little too much to swallow if you are not already a fan. I have known some who have read very few King books but have read Misery and they enjoyed it. So, I think it could be a decent place to start if you are looking to get into his works.

Rogue Lawyer 27402206
On the right side of the law. Sort of.

Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He works out of a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, fine leather chairs, a hidden gun compartment, and a heavily armed driver. He has no firm, no partners, no associates, and only one employee, his driver, who's also his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddy. He lives alone in a small but extremely safe penthouse apartment, and his primary piece of furniture is a vintage pool table. He drinks small-batch bourbon and carries a gun.

Sebastian defends people other lawyers won't go near: a drug-addled, tattooed kid rumored to be in a satanic cult, who is accused of molesting and murdering two little girls; a vicious crime lord on death row; a homeowner arrested for shooting at a SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his house. Why these clients? Because he believes everyone is entitled to a fair trial, even if he, Sebastian, has to cheat to secure one. He hates injustice, doesn't like insurance companies, banks, or big corporations; he distrusts all levels of government and laughs at the justice system's notions of ethical behavior.]]>

I really don’t have any complaints about this book. The fact that it is a series of shorter stories all in the life of the titular character keeps the pace quick and interesting. The uniqueness of the storylines makes me wonder if Grisham researched weird and shocking legal cases and then modified them to fit into his overall plot. Or maybe he hit his creative groove in coming up with some out of the ordinary situations. Either way, it was fun to read.

If you are a Grisham or legal thriller fan, I can easily recommend this book if you are looking for something to read. I am hoping that Grisham ends up doing more like this one.

House of Leaves 16247121 -Initial copies of the 'Remastered Full-Colour Edition' have an "Only Revolutions, Coming September '06" sticker on the cover.

House of Leaves is a multilayered intersection of wild ideas, ten years in the making, from Mark Danielewski. It is also the story of a seemingly normal house gone wild. The novel intertwines the narratives of two haunted Zampanò, a blind man whose strange manuscript is found in his apartment when he dies, and Johnny Truant, the tome's discoverer and narrator of House of Leaves.

Zampanò's manuscript is a critique of a documentary film called "The Navidson Record," by Pulitzer Prize-winning filmmaker Will Navidson. The filmmaker had just moved his family into a house on Ash Tree Lane and hadn't even had the chance to unpack before the strangeness began. Navidson discovered what at first seemed like an odd prank perpetrated by a psychotic Behind a closet door, a hallway with smooth black walls had suddenly appeared. This prompted Navidson, ever the pragmatist, to do some measurements. He learned that the inside of the house was larger than the outside. And the hallway did not just remain a hallway; it was growing rapidly, and there was a deep growl emanating from the darkness that was unlike anything he'd ever heard. Partly out of habit, but also sensing that nobody would ever believe his story, Navidson captured everything on film.

Realizing that he was out of his league, Navidson assembled a team of professional hunters and explorers, four fearless men who could navigate any terrain and deal with any physical hardship. Armed with the best high-tech equipment, cameras, and plenty of supplies, they ventured into the dreamlike interior of the house. The discovered that the house was mutating, spawning a web of incredibly complex, pitch-black passageways and cavernous spaces. Dimension and space shifted constantly, becoming fluid and dangerous. The house humbled the team, rendered their equipment useless, and turned them against each other.

Danielewski's descriptions of the explorations of the interior are amazing (think Into Thin Air in a surreal dreamscape). As the house mutates, so does Zampanò's manuscript; the text takes on a life of its own, and the layout responds. The film critique is heavily and amazingly footnoted in a way that blurs the line between artifice and reality. The house is completely baffling, Johnny is sliding into madness, and there is something evil that haunted Zampanò and the house on Ash Tree Lane and now stalks Johnny. His transformation is also He goes from being an apathetic, hedonistic, eviction-dodging tattoo shop apprentice to a physically wasted, haunted shadow of his former self.

House of Leaves is an incredible blend of mystery, madness, and terror that makes the reader uncomfortable in an entirely new and fascinating way. The novel asks an important What are we afraid of? It goes after the deeper origins of fear and stays with us—in our thoughts and dreams—long after we've turned the last page.

—Sophie Cottrell

Bleak House

Can a book be a labyrinth? Or, to follow the premise of Mark Z. Danielewski's genre-bending debut, can a book about a book about a film be anything else? House of Leaves is both vast and claustrophobic, crammed with minutiae (footnotes, appendices, poems and letters, and layout trickery) yet cored by a deep, absorbing emptiness, a deliberate void that accommodates, even incorporates, each character's—perhaps even each reader's—expectations, quirks, and fears.

At the novel's heart is "The Navidson Record," a documentary collage made by Will Navidson, prizewinning photographer, of his attempts to explore the impossible. A bizarre hallway—dark, cold, and haunted by a menacing growl—has suddenly appeared in his new home, and within its darkness lies an ominous architecture that mutates, viruslike, with every trip inside, offering a deadly threat to Navidson's wife, Karen, and their young children; to his brother Tom, whose loyalty Navidson abuses; to his friends who become involved in the quest; and finally and most directly, to himself. For Navidson cannot stop his explorations; he can't stop wanting to see.

House of Leaves is also the "book," painstakingly compiled by a strange old man named Zampanò, acquired after his death by Johnny Truant, an apathetic slacker mired in drugs and sad sex. Johnny's obsessive immersion in the manuscript echoes the black-hole threat of the hallway to Navidson; both are caught then consumed by the need to go deeper than safety, or sanity, can support; both will risk their lives in pursuit of the secret of the hallway, and both will be damaged by the experience in ways they cannot anticipate or escape.

399 Stephen King 0452262143 Matthew 5
I was excited to get back to The Drawing of the Three as it is my favorite book of the Dark Tower series. I feel like this book came right when King was hitting the sweet spot for both the quest for the tower but as well as his other novels; around this same time he was releasing/working on Skeleton Crew, It, and Misery. Also, this is a reread as part of my working back through the King books in chronological order, so it is interesting to take them in as they were released.

The Drawing of the Three is the perfect combination of fantasy, mysticism, psychological thriller, and horror. It may be the most integrated King ever went with all the genres he has ever explored. I know I am gushing over this like a King fanboy, but it really is that good!

You may be asking yourself I am a King fan, so should I read this? Well . . . if you read The Gunslinger and want to try more definitely. And it is a much better book than The Gunslinger so I think you will find yourself much more invested in this one. If you read The Gunslinger and didn’t like it, it might be worth a try since it is a better and more fleshed out book but proceed with caution. If you don’t really have interest in the Dark Tower series or just like King when he is writing in a very specific genre, this may not be the book for you.

I hope you try it and you like it!

It tells the story of Charles Ryder's infatuation with the Marchmains and the rapidly-disappearing world of privilege they inhabit. review:
Brideshead Revisited is an early 1900’s soap opera. The themes of relationships, alcoholism, religion, etc. and the conflicts caused by each serve to spice up this story. At times I was reminded of Downton Abbey, Poldark, and other stories of that ilk. While I do enjoy drama set in that era, I did find this one to be a bit drier than I care for. But overall I enjoyed it and would say it is about 3.5 out of 5 stars.

This story is much like the other Grant County books so if you enjoyed those, you will like this one. Slaughter continues to shock and sometimes disgust with graphic depictions of bad behavior. But, hey, we all like to get a bit grimy when escaping into books from time to time, don’t we?

While not every book in this series or in the authors repertoire has been a hit for me, I do find some gems and enjoyable getaways. This was one that kept me interested and will help to make me keep coming back for more.

Slaughter writes great flawed characters. Reading her books is like watching a reality show of people picking the worst options and doing everything they can to ruin their relationships. To accompany those characters are some seriously scuzzy characters getting in the way. This is some scum that you will love to hate.

Pale Fire 21527802 Pale Fire published in 1962 after the critical and popular success of Lolita had made him an international literary figure.

An ingeniously constructed parody of detective fiction and learned commentary, Pale Fire offers a cornucopia of deceptive pleasures, at the center of which is a 999-line poem written by the literary genius John Shade just before his death. Surrounding the poem is a foreword and commentary by the demented scholar Charles Kinbote, who interweaves adoring literary analysis with the fantastical tale of an assassin from the land of Zembla in pursuit of a deposed king.

Brilliantly constructed and wildly inventive, this darkly witty novel of suspense, literary one-upmanship, and political intrigue achieves that rarest of things in literature: perfect tragicomic balance.]]>
315 Vladimir Nabokov Matthew 4
I have never quite read a book like this one. It was a bit difficult to follow and stay interested in (as evidenced in the fact that it is only 300 pages but took me about 9 months to read. But, at the same time, I enjoyed it, its themes, and its symbolism quite a lot. I think this is one that can benefit from doing some side research and interpretation while you are reading it.

The book is written as if it is a true story and the author (Charles Kinbote) is a biographer for the main character (John Shade) and is interpreting his poem, that takes up a few dozen pages, with a couple hundred pages of footnotes (which is where the main story lies). At times Charles is very frank and sincere, at other times he is borderline unhinged. While it is all fiction, it was interesting to try to extrapolate the truth from the exaggerations in the story.

If you try this one, go in knowing that it is likely unlike anything you have ever read before. Embrace the differences. Then, when confusion sets in, take a break and have a nice cup of tea it will be waiting for you when you return!

This first in the series feels like “a first with Nevada Barr just getting used to the characters and format. It is okay but felt a bit unpolished. Anna is supposed to be a strong character, but I felt like her personality and harsh introspection got in the way of the story at times. Also, when all the characters were introduced, it did not feel organic. Instead, it felt like an in-your-face avalanche of everyone all at once. Because of this, I found them hard to keep straight and remember who is who when they came back into the story later.

While my experience with this one was lukewarm, I look forward to trying more. I imagine that Barr eventually gets into the groove!]]>

Track of the Cat is a mystery title that I have had on my “To Read list for a long time. Also, the entire Anna Pigeon series has interested me as they all take place in national parks and I used to live in Yellowstone National Park. I figured I would find these outdoorsy mysteries appealing.

One Hundred Years of Solitude 23002632
The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the BuendĂa family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the BuendĂa family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Love and lust, war and revolution, riches and poverty, youth and senility, the variety of life, the endlessness of death, the search for peace and truth—these universal themes dominate the novel. Alternately reverential and comical, One Hundred Years of Solitude weaves the political, personal, and spiritual to bring a new consciousness to storytelling. Translated into dozens of languages, this stunning work is no less than an account of the history of the human race.]]>
14 Gabriel García Márquez Matthew 3 Love in the Time of Cholera and One Hundred Years of Solitude) have not been my favorite reading experiences. I feel that I did enjoy One Hundred Years of Solitude more, but in general I do not think his writing is for me. However, this does not discredit in anyway the writing and story and I can very easily see why some people like his writing and why it is considered a classic.

I am sure people want an explanation of why I cannot give Márquez and his books a glowing review. Mainly, I just think the subject matter and style are not for me. While I usually enjoy magical realism, the way that he tells his various stories only gets me truly invested 1/5 of the time. The rest of the time I tend to be either bored and/or confused. Often, I find myself revisiting sections to make sure I understood what I had just experienced. With that being said, I did find myself more invested and interested in this book over Cholera is that because it is a better book or because I knew better what I was getting into? I am not sure.

This book is worth a try if you want an interesting atmospheric, genre-specific historical fiction story (I hope that description makes sense . . . it made sense to me in my mind!). Also, it is worth trying if you are “collecting the classics. But, if you are looking for an exciting or riveting read, I think chances are low that you will find it here.]]>

The Four Winds 55859588 actual listening time = 15h 2m

“My land tells its story if you listen. The story of our family.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli and decides to change the direction of her life. With her reputation in ruin, there is only one respectable choice: marriage to a man she barely knows.

By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as crops fail and water dries up and the earth cracks open. Dust storms roll relentlessly across the plains. Everything on the Martinelli farm is dying, including Elsa’s tenuous marriage; each day is a desperate battle against nature and a fight to keep her children alive.

In this uncertain and perilous time, Elsa—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

The Four Winds is a rich, sweeping novel that stunningly brings to life the Great Depression and the people who lived through it—the harsh realities that divided us as a nation and the enduring battle between the haves and the have-nots. A testament to hope, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit to survive adversity, The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.]]>
16 Kristin Hannah 125031724X Matthew 4
Lots of hints of Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath.

Also, while it was set earlier than the Great Depression and a couple thousand miles away in Chicago, I was also reminded of Sinclair’s The Jungle.

If either of those books interested you, you will either enjoy this book as well or might think it is a poor attempt at telling a story about the times. It is hard to tell how one might respond when delving into a genre that was covered by the classic writers. I am in the “enjoyed as well camp.

The book is well written, and the story well told. Having recently read some Steinbeck, I could feel Hannah’s attempt at a similar storytelling technique without just producing something that was not unique or not creative on its own. Still, some hard-core critics might find it too similar and just a rehash of similar stories already told about the era I will leave that up to you to decide.

I am glad I read it and if you have been a fan of her other works, I think you will enjoy this one as well.
