<![CDATA[The Western Peace Officer: A Legacy of Law and Order]]> 996348
Examining the legends that surround the western peace officer, Professor Prassel argues that he was no better or worse than the members of the community he served. His work was largely routine. Only after journalists and novelists glorified him beyond all recognition did he acquire the resplendent finery and flamboyant manner now common to the cinematic hero.

This book describes the activities of a number of law-enforcement agencies. Each level of civil administration in the West had its own police force. Banks, railroads, and cattlemen's associations hired private detectives, and Indian police patrolled reservations. Pinkerton men, Texas rangers, Canadian mounties, and Mexican rurales all played a part in western law enforcement. Men like Dallas Stoudenmire, James Butler Hickok, and Wyatt Earp are discussed, together with more colorful but less publicized figures like Frank Wattron, one-time sheriff of Navajo County, Arizona. Wattron, who ran a drugstore and tended bar, wore a diamond-encrusted badge of solid gold. He once announced a hanging by sending invitations that promised "the latest improved methods in the art of strangulation ... to make the surroundings cheerful and the execution a success."

Despite a century of effort, the peace officer failed to bring law and order to the American West. Outdated police methods and antiquated statutes may help to explain why the West is more violent and crime-ridden today than when the frontier was new. By considering such problems, Professor Prassel's book acquires a particular significance for our times.]]>

<![CDATA[The Rise and Fall of American Communism]]> 53949992
That the American Communist Party was controlled from Moscow was disputed but commonly assumed. The strategy by which it was worked, however, the secret meetings, the coded shortwave messages, the jockeying for power, the coordination of political tactics—from the nadir of the Depression to the time of the Cold War—of these behind-the-scenes elements in the international conflict which led to the present situation, there has been little awareness or understanding.

This authoritative book explains why. The author for many years sympathized with the aims of the American Communist Party; and he was perhaps the closest confidant of Earl Browder, the Secretary of the Party for fifteen critical years.

It was Browder himself who turned over to Mr. Jaffe the secret documents that make possible the revelations of this suspenseful book, which also tells how Browder was eventually deposed in an early move of the Cold War Strategy.

My Life with Bonnie and Clyde 705241

Blanche wrote her memoir between 1933 and 1939, while serving time at the Missouri State Penitentiary. Following her death, Blanche’s good friend and the executor of her will, Esther L. Weiser, found the memoir wrapped in a large unused Christmas card. Later she entrusted it to Phillips, who had interviewed Blanche several times before her death. Drawing from these interviews, and from extensive research into Depression-era outlaw history, Phillips supplements the memoir with helpful notes and with biographical information about Blanche and her accomplices.]]>

<![CDATA[Roman Homosexuality: Ideologies of Masculinity in Classical Antiquity (Ideologies of Desire)]]> 1098405 such literary texts as courtroom speeches, love poetry, philosophy, epigram, and history, but also graffiti and other inscriptions as well as artistic artifacts--and uses that evidence to reconstruct the contexts within which Roman texts were created and had their meaning. The book takes as its
starting point the thesis that in order to understand the Roman material, we must make the effort to set aside any preconceptions we might have regarding sexuality, masculinity, and effeminacy.

Williams' book argues in detail that for the writers and readers of Roman texts, the important distinctions were drawn not between homosexual and heterosexual, but between free and slave, dominant and subordinate, masculin and effeminate as conceived in specifically Roman terms. Other important
questions addressed by this book include the differences between Roman and Greek practices and ideologies; the influence exerted by distinctively Roman ideals of austerity; the ways in which deviations from the norms of masculine sexual practice were negotiated both in the arena of public discourse
and in real men's lives; the relationship between the rhetoric of "nature" and representations of sexual practices; and the extent to which same-sex marriages were publicly accepted.]]>

<![CDATA[Not All Okies Are White: The Lives of Black Cotton Pickers in Arizona (Volume 1)]]> 304311 Not All Okies Are White is a brilliant, spellbinding celebration of the resilience and adaptability of people too often ignored by history texts.

Recognizing the black exodus to the American West as an overlooked but integral chapter in American history, Geta LeSeur fills the void by extending her research beyond the Mississippi River and the Mason-Dixon line, examining close-up the personal lives of third- and fourth-generation descendants of pre-Emancipation blacks. In this first full-length study to explore the migrant life of any nonwhite group within the United States and the first to focus specifically on a primarily black town in the Southwest, LeSeur deftly uncovers the stepping-stone pattern of black movement west of the Mississippi into Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, and consequent migrations to Arizona and California imposed by economic and social conditions.

Not All Okies Are White recaptures the ways of life for black migrant workers, as well as Hispanics and Native Americans, in the first half of the century through richly detailed interviews of the families of Randolph's founders. Through the words of each narrator, these personal stories recount work experiences and survival strategies, offering new insights into the people's relationship to the land. The narratives reveal a creative tension between place and identity, movement and migration. LeSeur provides a historical, cultural, and literary context for the oral histories by incorporating news articles, information culled from historical society archives, analyses of films and novels, advertisements, and photographs.

An innovative blend of history telling and literary analysis, Not All Okies Are White describes LeSeur's acquaintance with and growing involvement in the lives of the residents of Randolph and surrounding farm communities. The result is a highly accessible cross-disciplinary study that will appeal to scholars and general readers interested in oral history, African American history, multicultural studies, and women's studies.]]>

<![CDATA[Lower Ed: The Troubling Rise of For-Profit Colleges in the New Economy]]> 25159221 The New York Times Book Review

As seen on The Daily Show , NPR’s Marketplace , and Fresh Air , the “powerful, chilling tale (Carol Anderson) of higher education becoming an engine of social inequality
More than two million students are enrolled in for-profit colleges, from the small family-run operations to the behemoths brandished on billboards, subway ads, and late-night commercials. These schools have been around just as long as their bucolic not-for-profit counterparts, yet shockingly little is known about why they have expanded so rapidly in recent years—during the so-called Wall Street era of for-profit colleges.

In Lower Ed Tressie McMillan Cottom—a bold and rising public scholar, herself once a recruiter at two for-profit colleges—expertly parses the fraught dynamics of this big-money industry to show precisely how it is part and parcel of the growing inequality plaguing the country today. McMillan Cottom discloses the shrewd recruitment and marketing strategies that these schools deploy and explains how, despite the well-documented predatory practices of some and the campus closings of others, ending for-profit colleges won’t end the vulnerabilities that made them the fastest growing sector of higher education at the turn of the twenty-first century. And she doesn’t stop there.

With sharp insight and deliberate acumen, McMillan Cottom delivers a comprehensive view of postsecondary for-profit education by illuminating the experiences of the everyday people behind the shareholder earnings, congressional battles, and student debt disasters. The relatable human stories in Lower Ed —from mothers struggling to pay for beauty school to working class guys seeking “good jobs to accomplished professionals pursuing doctoral degrees—illustrate that the growth of for-profit colleges is inextricably linked to larger questions of race, gender, work, and the promise of opportunity in America.

Drawing on more than one hundred interviews with students, employees, executives, and activists, Lower Ed tells the story of the benefits, pitfalls, and real costs of a for-profit education. It is a story about broken social contracts; about education transforming from a public interest to a private gain; and about all Americans and the challenges we face in our divided, unequal society.]]>

<![CDATA[The Strategic Bombing of Germany, 1940-1945]]> 1787451
Levine stresses the impact of bombing on the war, and generally endorses the strategic air campaign as worthwhile and effective. But he concludes that many mistakes were made by the Allies--both the British and the Americans--in tactics, the development of equipment, and in the selection of targets. Levine sees strategic bombing as a powerful tool that was often misused, particularly when the doctrine of area bombing flourished. Scholars, students, and buffs interested in World War II and/or the history of aviation will find this study of great interest.]]>

<![CDATA[The American Experiment: The Vineyard of Liberty, The Workshop of Democracy, and The Crosswinds of Freedom]]> 19105815 The Pulitzer Prize–winning author’s stunning trilogy of American history, spanning the birth of the Constitution to the final days of the Cold War. In these three volumes, Pulitzer Prize–Â and National Book Award–winner James MacGregor Burns chronicles with depth and narrative panache the most significant cultural, economic, and political events of American history. In The Vineyard of Liberty, he combines the color and texture of early American life with meticulous scholarship. Focusing on the tensions leading up to the Civil War, Burns brilliantly shows how Americans became divided over the meaning of Liberty. In The Workshop of Democracy, Burns explores more than a half-century of dramatic growth and transformation of the American landscape, through the addition of dozens of new states, the shattering tragedy of the First World War, the explosion of industry, and, in the end, the emergence of the United States as a new global power. And in The Crosswinds of Freedom, Burns offers an articulate and incisive examination of the US during its rise to become the world’s sole superpower—through the Great Depression, the Second World War, the Cold War, and the rapid pace of technological change that gave rise to the “American Century.â€]]> 4102 James MacGregor Burns Trevor reads history 0 to-read 4.12 2013 The American Experiment: The Vineyard of Liberty, The Workshop of Democracy, and The Crosswinds of Freedom

<![CDATA[Light-Horse Harry: A Biography of Washington’s Great Cavalryman, General Henry Lee (Heroes and Villains from American History)]]> 58025765 An engrossing biography of Washington’s great cavalryman. General Henry Lee was an accomplished soldier and statesman, recognised for his heroic cavalry exploits during the American Revolutionary War. Ideal reading for those who have enjoyed the books of H. W. Brands, Craig L. Symonds and Nathaniel Philbrick. Henry Lee learnt to ride before he was 5, joined Washington’s Army upon the outbreak of the American Revolution at 19, and was appointed Captain of the Fifth Troop of Virginia Dragoons at 20. At 22 Colonel Lee took command of a mixed cavalry and infantry unit known as “Lee’s Legion the finest offensive team in the entire Continental Army. Nicknamed “Light-Horse Harry for his lightning raids on British supply wagons, the young Virginian quickly earned a reputation for horsemanship and distinguished himself as one of the most skilled and courageous cavalry officers of the American Revolution. “No man sits a saddle more firmly said General George Washington of Henry Lee. After the war Lee served in the Virginia legislature, in the Congress under the Articles of Confederation, in the Virginia Convention of 1788 that ratified the federal Constitution, and as governor of the state between 1791 and 1794. His political career was interrupted while he commanded the Army to put down the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. From 1799 to 1801 he served in the United States House of Representatives. George Washington’s personal confidant and friend, on the President’s death in 1799 Lee delivered the immortal “First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen. Noel B. Gerson charts the triumphs and tragedies of one of the nation’s most distinguished citizens, whose rapid rise to fame was overshadowed by bankruptcy, imprisonment and the injuries he received from an angry mob in later life. Drawing on a wealth of contemporary sources, including private correspondence and Lee’s own published memoirs, Gerson masterfully portrays a dedicated patriot and natural-born soldier, a trait he passed on to his even more renowned son, General Robert E. Lee. “a lively and interesting account of the life and military career of General Henry Lee. The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography Light-Horse Harry is the history of a quintessential Virginia cavalryman and gallant Revolutionary war hero whose political accomplishments helped pave the way for American independence.]]> 331 Noel B. The Fire-Eaters 401311
Walther paints skillful portraits of his subjects, analyzing their backgrounds, personalities, and contributions to the movement for disunion. Although they shared the common goal of southern independence, Walther shows that in many respects the fire-eaters differed markedly from one another. It was their very diversity, he maintains, that enabled them to appeal to such a wide spectrum of southern opinion and thereby rally support for secession.

In his exploration of the role of the fire-eaters in the secession movement, Walther touches upon a number of perennial themes in southern history, including the appeal of proslavery thought and southern expansionism, the place of education and industrialization in antebellum southern society, the significance of oratory in southern culture, and the nature of southern nationalism. He also describes the fire-eaters' activities on behalf of the Confederacy and traces the course of their lives after the war.

The Fire-Eaters makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of the secession movement and the context in which it developed. There is no other study available that treats these men as a group and that delineates their manifold differences as well as their similarities. Walther shows that secessionism was not a monolithic ideology but rather a movement that emerged from many sources, spoke in many voices, and responded to a number of regional problems, needs, and aspirations.]]>

<![CDATA[Abraham Lincoln and American Political Religion]]> 4098145
"Although these two groups of scholars have written in almost complete independence of one another, and although there are significant differences between them, they are agreed in believing that one must look to men's thoughts--to their speeches and writings--in order to understand their actions. These men have opened again the study of statesmanship.

"This work is a study of the thought of Abraham Lincoln as found in his speeches and writings. Its motivation is not unreflecting reverence for great men nor curiosity about historical contingencies, but concern with an aspect of the problem that was central to Lincoln's thought: the capacity of a people to govern themselves.

"Lincoln's thought is not looked upon as a cover for, or rationalization of, his other deeds. Nor is it measured by its influence on subsequent generations, though Lincoln's great influence is not denied, and provides a motive for interest in Lincoln. Rather this study aims to examine Lincoln's opinions and the reasoning supporting them, explicit and implicit. It does not seek to debunk because it regard Lincoln's thought as sufficiently good to merit serious examination; it cannot worship because it seeks to understand. Its author's view is that the deepest grounds for both praise and criticism of Lincoln are to be found through his speeches and writings.

"The problem of this book is the problem of political religion as it appears in Abraham Lincoln…Lincoln's religion, as we know it, is part of his political rhetoric and cannot be divorced from it. In this sense, at least, Lincoln's religion is political religion." (pp. xi-xii)]]>

Lincoln and His Admirals 2475329 Beginning with a gripping account of the attempt to re-supply Fort Sumter--a comedy of errors that shows all too clearly the fledgling president's inexperience--Symonds traces Lincoln's steady growth as a wartime commander-in-chief. Absent a Secretary of Defense, he would eventually become de facto commander of joint operations along the coast and on the rivers. That involved dealing with the men who ran the Navy: the loyal but often cranky Navy Secretary Gideon Welles, the quiet and reliable David G. Farragut, the flamboyant and unpredictable Charles Wilkes, the ambitious ordnance expert John Dahlgren, the well-connected Samuel Phillips Lee, and the self-promoting and gregarious David Dixon Porter. Lincoln was remarkably patient; he often postponed critical decisions until the momentum of events made the consequences of those decisions evident. But Symonds also shows that Lincoln could act decisively. Disappointed by the lethargy of his senior naval officers on the scene, he stepped in and personally directed an amphibious assault on the Virginia coast, a successful operation that led to the capture of Norfolk. The man who knew "but little of ships" had transformed himself into one of the greatest naval strategists of his age.

<![CDATA[Lincoln and the Indians: Civil War Policy and Politics]]> 15805378
"For the Dakota people, the Indian System started with the doctrine of discovery and continued through Abraham Lincoln's presidency and beyond. The United States was bound to protect the rights of Indian parties. But in the end, the guilty were glorified and the laws for humanity disgraced. This book tells that story, and it should be required reading at all educational institutions." —Sheldon Wolfchild, independent filmmaker, artist, and actor

"Undoubtedly the best book published on Indian affairs in the years of Lincoln's presidency." —American Historical Review]]>

Lincoln on Race and Slavery 5993946
Generations of Americans have debated the meaning of Abraham Lincoln's views on race and slavery. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation and supported a constitutional amendment to outlaw slavery, yet he also harbored grave doubts about the intellectual capacity of African Americans, publicly used the n-word until at least 1862, and favored permanent racial segregation. In this book―the first complete collection of Lincoln's important writings on both race and slavery―readers can explore these contradictions through Lincoln's own words. Acclaimed Harvard scholar and documentary filmmaker Henry Louis Gates, Jr., presents the full range of Lincoln's views, gathered from his private letters, speeches, official documents, and even race jokes, arranged chronologically from the late 1830s to the 1860s.

Complete with definitive texts, rich historical notes, and an original introduction by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., this book charts the progress of a war within Lincoln himself. We witness his struggles with conflicting aims and ideas―a hatred of slavery and a belief in the political equality of all men, but also anti-black prejudices and a determination to preserve the Union even at the cost of preserving slavery. We also watch the evolution of his racial views, especially in reaction to the heroic fighting of black Union troops.

At turns inspiring and disturbing, Lincoln on Race and Slavery is indispensable for understanding what Lincoln's views meant for his generation―and what they mean for our own.]]>

Lincoln's Political Thought 21878121
The abolition of slavery was not originally a tenet of Lincoln’s political religion. He affirmed almost to the end of his life that the preservation of the Union was more important than ending slavery. This attitude was consistent with his judgment that at the founding, the agreement to incorporate slaveholding into the Constitution, and thus secure a Constitution, was more vital to the cause of equality than struggling to keep slavery out of the new nation. In Kateb’s reading, Lincoln destroys the Constitution twice, by suspending it as a wartime measure and then by enacting the Thirteenth Amendment to abolish slavery. The first instance was an effort to save the Constitution; the second was an effort to transform it, by making it answer the Declaration’s promises of equality.

The man who emerges in Kateb’s account proves himself adequate to the most terrible political situation in American history. Lincoln’s political life, however, illustrates the unsettling truth that in democratic politics―perhaps in all politics―it is nearly impossible to do the right thing for the right reasons, honestly stated.]]>
