In Signed, Sealed, Delivered, Dr. J.V. Fesko introduces the essential elements of Reformed covenant theology. This classical approach to reading God’s Word shows us how the whole Bible fits together with Jesus Christ at its center. Christians also gain clarity on the continuity of God’s promises to His people throughout history. In this way, covenant theology can hone our focus on the gospel, enrich our understanding of the sacraments, and deepen our love for the church, all to the glory of God.]]>

<![CDATA[Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ]]> 770479
It is a thorough exposition of John 6:37: All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. Bunyan not only explains the meaning of the terms used in the text, but also labours to remove the doubts and difficulties of sinners and backsliders in their approach to Christ.

This work could be said to have given rise indirectly to the modern missionary movement, since it strongly influenced Andrew Fuller, the first secretary of the pioneering Baptist Missionary Society, and helped him to set his denomination free from the grip of hyper-Calvinism. It is a Christian classic that deserves a wide modern readership.]]>

Ice-cold lemonade. The laughter of children. College football. Scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. But what happens to these earthly pleasures when Jesus shows up? Do the things of earth grow strangely dim? Or does he shine in all that's fair?

In this book, Joe Rigney offers a breath of fresh air to Christians who are burdened by false standards, impossible expectations, and misguided notions of holiness. Steering a middle course between idolatry on the one hand and ingratitude on the other, this much-needed book reminds us that every good gift comes from the Father's hand, that God's blessings should drive us to worship and generosity, and that a passion for God's glory is as wide as the world.]]>

<![CDATA[What It Means to Be Protestant: The Case for an Always-Reforming Church]]> 201335312
In What it Means to Be Protestant, Gavin Ortlund draws from both his scholarly work in church history and his personal experience in ecumenical engagement to offer a powerful defense of the Protestant tradition. Retrieving classical Protestant texts and arguments, he exposes how many of the contemporary objections leveled against Protestants are rooted in caricature. Ultimately, he shows that historic Protestantism offers the best pathway to catholicity and historical rootedness for Christians today.??

In his characteristically charitable and irenic style, Ortlund demonstrates that the 16th century Reformation represented a genuine renewal of the gospel. This does not entail that Protestantism is without faults. But because it is built upon the principle of semper reformanda (always reforming), Protestantism is capable of reforming itself according to Scripture as the ultimate authority. This scholarly and yet accessible book breaks new ground in ecumenical theology and will be a staple text in the field for many years to come.]]>

<![CDATA[Through Western Eyes: Eastern Orthodoxy: A Reformed Perspective]]> 686844 In recent years, Eastern Orthodoxy has emerged vividly on the radar of Western Christians - hitherto, it was largely ignored. The separation has been due to the long-term historical disruption caused by differences in language, outlook and theology and eventually by the depredations of Islam. Because of these East and West went their separate ways. As a result, the respective theologies appear at times to inhabit parallel universes.
However, this ignorance is changing. Eastern Orthodoxy is increasingly popular in the Anglo-Saxon world. It conveys a sense of mystery, of continuity with the past, of dignified worship at a time when evangelical Protestantism is increasingly cheapened and trivialized.
This book examines the history and theology of Orthodoxy from a Reformed perspective. There are clear and significant areas of agreement - a common allegiance to the triune God; the person of Christ; the authority of Scripture and the truth of the gospel. At the same time there are many areas of disagreement, where it seems that Orthodoxy and Protestantism are at odds. However, there are also misunderstandings on both sides, where proponents of either position are not normally dealing accurately with what the other holds to be true. In drawing attention to the agreements and misunderstandings Robert Letham trusts that readers may come to a better understanding of exactly where the real differences lie. We can learn from Orthodoxy - if our assumption is that the most important thing is to grow in our knowledge of Christ.]]>

<![CDATA[Expository Thoughts on the Gospel of Matthew [Annotated, Updated]: A Commentary]]> 61205543 Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. Matthew 7:24

Wisdom, encouragement, and exhortation is contained in these pages. Not because of the author's brilliance, but because of the words of truth contained in the gospel of Matthew. And just as the apostle Matthew didn't draw any attention to himself, so also J. C. Ryle clearly and wonderfully directs his words and our thoughts towards the inspired words of scripture. If we truly love God, we will love His word; and the more study His word, the more we will love God.

About the Author
John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) graduated from Eton and Oxford and then pursued a career in politics, but due to lack of funds, he entered the clergy of the Church of England. He was a contemporary of Spurgeon, Moody, Mueller, and Taylor and read the great theologians like Wesley, Bunyan, Knox, Calvin, and Luther. These all influenced Ryle’s understanding and theology. Ryle began his writing career with a tract following the Great Yarmouth suspension bridge tragedy, where more than a hundred people drowned. He gained a reputation for straightforward preaching and evangelism. He travelled, preached, and wrote more than 300 pamphlets, tracts, and books, including Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, Principles for Churchmen, and Christian Leaders of the Eighteenth Century. Ryle used the royalties from his writing to pay his father’s debts, but he also felt indebted to that ruin for changing the direction of his life. He was recommended by Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli to be Bishop of Liverpool where he ended his career in 1900.]]>

<![CDATA[By What Standard? An Analysis of the Philosophy of Cornelius Van Til]]> 1206163
Basic to this study is the belief that presuppositions of human thought in every field must be basically one in order to arrive at any concept which both validates biblical faith and human knowledge. The sovereignty of the self-contained God is the key to every field, in that only the God of Scripture makes all things possible and explicable and is thus the basic premise not only of theology, but of philosophy, science and indeed all knowledge. In that God is the Creator of all things. He is their only valid principle of interpretation, in that they derive both their existence and meaning from His creative act. This belief is herein set forth in terms of various aspects of human thought.

Again basic to this study is the belief that such a philosophy finds consistent and able exposition in the writings of Cornelius Van Til. This work, therefore, is thus both an exposition as well of Van Til's development of that philosophy, a school of thought to which the author subscribes.

This is Rushdoony's foundational work on philosophy.]]>

<![CDATA[Shepherds for Sale: How Evangelical Leaders Traded the Truth for a Leftist Agenda]]> 204982725 “This may just be the single most important book on modern Evangelicalism in recent years. It is bold, clear, and very well-researched.”—John MacArthur

How deeply have leftist billionaires infiltrated America’s churches?

Liberal theology isn’t new. Pastors and theologians have drifted, slipped, or even plunged into doctrinal error for centuries. But in recent decades, Daily Wire reporter Megan Basham reveals, well-funded forces from outside the church have been sowing seeds of discord from behind the scenes.

In Shepherds for Sale, Basham documents how progressive powerbrokers —from George Soros, to the founder of eBay, to former members of the Obama administration set out to change the American church. Secular foundations and think tanks have deliberately targeted Christian media, universities, megachurches, nonprofits, and even entire denominations, not to mention many high-profile pastors and influencers, with infiltration and astroturf campaigns. Their to co-opt the church for political purposes. In exchange for toeing a left-wing line, many of those church leaders and institutions have received cash, career jumps, prestige, and praise.

Now, many evangelical leaders are pushing their members to “whisper about sexual sins, reconsider the importance of abortion, lament the effects of climate change, and repent of “perpetuating systemic racism. Meanwhile, America’s largest evangelical denominations are fraught with division over issues like critical race theory, and many ministries once known for publishing sound doctrine are now promoting social justice.

Through years of investigation, Basham uncovered compromise at the highest levels of evangelical leadership —from the revered Presbyterian theologian who furtively backed a rogue congregation rebelling against his own denomination, to the celebrity megachurch pastor who secretly encouraged a group of pastors to change their views on sexuality.

A rigorously reportedexposé, Shepherds for Saleserves as a warning of what can happen when a church forgetsthat true power lies not in the world’s wisdom, but in Scripture.]]>

<![CDATA[Keep Your spiritual Edge: Lessons from Andrew Bonar for Ministers Today]]> 123732531 How can pastors keep the faith amidst the pressures of ministry in the 21st century?
A rise in pastoral burnout has left many in the church concerned that the answer is “no.

In Keep Your Spiritual Edge, David P. Beaty draws lessons from Andrew Bonar’s spiritual life to show how ordinary ministers can combat burnout through a vibrant fellowship with God. Andrew Bonar, a Nineteenth-century minister who pastored for more than 50 years, had the same aspirations as today’s to fulfill his ministry and finish the fight of faith.

“Pastoral fatigue has accelerated to a place where we are now facing a crisis of pastoral resilience. We need to seriously consider what it looks like for an ordinary pastor to ‘keep their edge for years of long and faithful ministry. Pastor David Beaty offers us the humble example of a pastor whose deep devotion to the Lord and complete reliance on prayer and steadfast commitment in sharing the gospel resulted in a long-term faithful ministry. Through great challenges and suffering, Bonar kept his ‘edge, and his example can inspire a new generation of pastors to do the same.

"For decades Joel Beeke has read, preached, written, defended, worshiped, and prayed in the light of the power of these truths. In this highly accessible book he gives a condensed yet clear and highly pertinent explanation of the context and biblical foundation of Calvin's doctrinal exposition of divine sovereignty in the issue of election and reprobation." - Tom J. Radical Discipleship 210438112 Description

What does it mean to be a disciple of Christ? “Be ye holy; for I am holy.”1 Peter 1:16

The modern church has replaced true discipleship with a soft, cowardly, perverted, and shallow iteration of Christianity. The radical departure of our generation from the truth in favor of an anemic Christianity must be answered with a radical return to doctrine and practice.

Pastor Hensworth Jonas’s new book, Radical Discipleship, challenges professing Christians to live out Christ’s call to stand out in a hostile, sinful world.

Endorsements

"In much of modern Christianity, the prevalence of worldliness has diluted the distinction between the church and the world. In the church today, there is relatively little demand for gospel clarity, sound preaching, genuine discipleship, Christ-centered suffering, and faithful church discipline. In this work, Hensworth Jonas shows that Spirit-worked, life-transforming, and radical discipleship is the divine cure for worldliness. Such transformation is rooted in the power, person, and call of Jesus Christ, as well as awareness of God's holiness, eager anticipation of future glory, separation from the world, and imitation of God. With a pastoral heart, Jonas then shows how biblical discipleship should transform every aspect of our lives from the inside out. You will not be disappointed by this excellent manual of Reformed, experiential, and practical Christian living!"
—Joel R. Beeke, chancellor and professor of homiletics and systematic theology, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

"The Christian faith, by its very nature, must be radical. Light has come into the world of darkness. Thus, Hensworth Jonas's call in this book for God's people to pursue thorough holiness in this sinful world must be taken seriously. He challenges us to a Christian life that is wonderfully illustrated by his own life and ministry in the Caribbean. But above all, this is a call to biblical Christianity. I commend this book to today's church. Lest we totally lose our saltiness, let us heed this clarion call!"
—Conrad Mbewe, pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church and founding chancellor of the African Christian University, Lusaka, Zambia

"Hensworth Jonas intends to speak a word of correction, exhortation, and encouragement to contemporary Christianity. By God's grace, he has achieved his purpose. A careful reading of this book will result in a spiritual recalibration in all the areas of the Christian life that truly matter. His contrast between the God of the Bible and the designer god of contemporary Christianity is remarkable. His call for straightforward obedience to the Word of God is a summons to true discipleship.
—Paul Washer, founder and missions director of HeartCry Missionary Society

In this provocative book, Rebecca McLaughlin helps us disentangle the beliefs Christians gladly affirm from those they cannot embrace, and invites us to talk with our neighbors about the things that matter most. Every passage of sacred Scripture is either law or gospel, or is capable of being referred either to the one or to the other...If then a man cannot distinguish aright between the law and the gospel, he cannot rightly understand so much as a single article of divine truth. Every few years, churches jump into the latest evangelistic fad. Leaders administrate the new program, and members go on a raid. But picture a church where evangelism is just part of the culture. Leaders share their faith consistently and openly. Members follow, encouraging one another to make evangelism an ongoing way of life.

Such is the way of evangelism presented by this brief and compelling book. No program here. Instead, it just might give your church a new way to live and share the gospel together.]]>

First published in the Soviet journal Novy Mir in 1962, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich stands as a classic of contemporary literature. The story of labor-camp inmate Ivan Denisovich Shukhov, it graphically describes his struggle to maintain his dignity in the face of communist oppression. An unforgettable portrait of the entire world of Stalin's forced work camps, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is one of the most extraordinary literary documents to have emerged from the Soviet Union and confirms Solzhenitsyn's stature as "a literary genius whose talent matches that of Dosotevsky, Turgenev, Tolstoy"--Harrison Salisbury

<![CDATA[Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking]]> 8520610 The book that started the Quiet Revolution

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, superbly researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves.

Now with Extra Libris material, including a reader’s guide and bonus content.]]>

The Happiest Man on Earth 53239311 Life can be beautiful if you make it beautiful. It is up to you.

Eddie Jaku always considered himself a German first, a Jew second. He was proud of his country. But all of that changed in November 1938, when he was beaten, arrested and taken to a concentration camp.

Over the next seven years, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors every day, first in Buchenwald, then in Auschwitz, then on a Nazi death march. He lost family, friends, his country.

Because he survived, Eddie made the vow to smile every day. He pays tribute to those who were lost by telling his story, sharing his wisdom and living his best possible life. He now believes he is the 'happiest man on earth'.

Published as Eddie turns 100, this is a powerful, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful memoir of how happiness can be found even in the darkest of times.]]>

Cry, the Beloved Country 415937
Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that is the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be too moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much.

The eminent literary critic Lewis Gannett wrote, “We have had many novels from statesmen and reformers, almost all bad; many novels from poets, almost all thin. In Alan Paton’s Cry, the Beloved Country the statesman, the poet and the novelist meet in a unique harmony.

Cry, the Beloved Country is the deeply moving story of the Zulu pastor Stephen Kumalo and his son, Absalom, set against the background of a land and a people riven by racial injustice. Remarkable for its lyricism, unforgettable for character and incident, Cry, the Beloved Country is a classic work of love and hope, courage and endurance, born of the dignity of man.]]>

The dark riders came in the dead of night, like devils, wearing no colours but black crosses on their chests, leaving no clue as to who they are. Knights they may be, but honour and chivalry are not part of their code. They search for a relic, one worth more than any throne in Europe, and no man can stand in their way. <![CDATA[Dominion: How the Christian Revolution Remade the World]]> 54503518

Crucifixion, the Romans believed, was the worst fate imaginable, a punishment reserved for slaves. How astonishing it was, then, that people should have come to believe that one particular victim of crucifixion -- an obscure provincial by the name of Jesus -- was to be worshipped as a god. Dominion explores the implications of this shocking conviction as they have reverberated throughout history. Today, the West remains utterly saturated by Christian assumptions. As Tom Holland demonstrates, our morals and ethics are not universal but are instead the fruits of a very distinctive civilization. Concepts such as secularism, liberalism, science, and homosexuality are deeply rooted in a Christian seedbed. From Babylon to the Beatles, Saint Michael to #MeToo, Dominion tells the story of how Christianity transformed the modern world.]]>

Letter to the American Church 61054807
“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil.
Not to speak is to speak.
Not to act is to act.
God will not hold us guiltless.

Can it really be God’s will that His children be silent at a time like this? Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as godly meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle.

The author of a bestselling biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Metaxas reveals the haunting similarities between today’s American Church and the German Church of the 1930s. Echoing the German martyr’s prophetic call, he exhorts his fellow Christians to repent of their silence in the face of evil.

An attenuated and unbiblical “faith based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism, they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity. As Bonhoeffer and other heroes of the faith insisted, the Church has an irreplaceable role in the culture of a nation. It is our duty to fight the powers of darkness, especially on behalf of the weak and vulnerable.

Silence is not an option. God calls us to defend the unborn, to confront the lies of cultural Marxism, and to battle the globalist tyranny that crushes human freedom. Confident that this is His fight, the Church must overcome fear and enter the fray, armed with the spiritual weapons of prayer, self-sacrifice, and love.]]>

<![CDATA[Union with the Resurrected Christ: Eschatological New Creation and New Testament Biblical Theology]]> 63891007
In this follow-up to his bestselling A New Testament Biblical Theology , G.K. Beale summarizes and expands on that work with an eye to fleshing out the theology and theological implications of the resurrection and ascension. Beale explains that Christ's resurrection-ascension place him as the beginning of the eschatological fulfillment of the new creational kingdom. Specifically, Christ is the fulfillment of a cluster of 19 Old Testament end-time expectations, which Beale pictures as facets of a diamond that represent the resurrection-ascension. These eschatological realities attributed to Christ are imprinted on believers through dynamic union or identification with him. Through careful exegesis, Beale draws out important practical applications for everyday Christian living in the overlap of the old creation and the new.]]>

Beale is a masterful biblical theologian, synthesizing OT themes with their fulfillment in the person and work of Christ. As the title suggests, union with Christ is the organizing principle of the book, especially as it relates the resurrection of Christ and the corporate solidarity of His people in that event. Beale is characteristically verbose, sometimes clouding the simplicity of his argument with too many words. His exegesis is mostly compelling and certainly supportive of his overall thesis. Two weak points are his exegesis of Romans 7 and 1 John 3. Following Moo, he understands Romans 7 as a description of Paul's experience as an unbeliever. His explanation here is unpersuasive in my opinion and will not convince anyone to abandon the Augustinian view of the text. Also, departing from John Murray's take that 1 John 3 describes definitive sanctification (the regenerate cannot continue in continual, habitual unrepentant sin), Beale understands 1 John 3 to say that the regenerate simply cannot commit the sin of apostasy ("the sin leading to death" in chapter 5). Beale included application sections which contain some food for thought. However, these sections are brief and underdeveloped. The highlight of the book is his treatment of the exile and restoration as it relates to the resurrection of Christ. I anticipate reading and re-reading that chapter in days to come.

This is an excellent treatment of the basics of biblical Presbyterianism. However, I would not recommend it as an introduction to the subject for your average Christian believer. It is highly recommended for the Presbyterian minister who has some experience with reading older works of theology and will strengthen and clarify convictions. Thoughts on Public Prayer 66429733
As Dr. Jonathan Master notes in his Foreword to this edition of Miller’s work, ‘public prayer is the priority on Paul’s mind when considering public worship. Despite this priority, today public prayer has in some churches a diminishing place in corporate worship.

Ministers especially need instruction in public prayer—Samuel Miller understood this need in his day, and so much of what he wrote remains pertinent to the practice of an edifying ministry in the present.

This volume is replete with insights into the vital place of public prayer in worship, and of sound advice as to how progress may be made in this aspect of pastoral ministry.

This edition includes a Foreword by Dr. Jonathan L. Master, President of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Taylors, South Carolina, USA.]]>

<![CDATA[Come, Lord Jesus: Meditations on the Second Coming of Christ]]> 64231569 Bestselling Author John Piper Examines End-Times Theology and Scripture’s Command to Love the Second Coming of Christ

Many people are curious about the second coming of Christ―what it will be like, when it will happen, and what signs will come first. In his latest book, Come, Lord Jesus, John Piper addresses all these issues, but stresses that those who love the second coming of Christ will receive a crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:68).

Piper examines key biblical texts around the second coming while encouraging readers toward a Spirit-awakened affection for Jesus’s return. He also explores important questions such as, Could Jesus come at any moment, or must certain events happen first?; What does it mean to “Watch, for you know neither the day nor the hour?; and What should we be doing when he comes? With a special focus on the teachings of Jesus, Paul, and Peter, Come, Lord Jesus portrays not only the glory of the revealed Savior, but also the glorification of the resurrected saints.

Essential, Christ-Exalting Eschatology: Piper guides Christians to examine whether they long for the appearing of Christ, and what this event will mean for Christians, non-Christians, and for Christ himself
Careful Exegesis: Piper pays close and precise attention to the words of Scripture, especially with a view to showing how Jesus and Paul were of one mind about the second coming
Practical: The final 5 chapters are devoted to how Christians should live in this age between the first and second appearing of Christ

The Nickel Boys 42270835 Author of The Underground Railroad, Colson Whitehead brilliantly dramatizes another strand of American history through the story of two boys sentenced to a hellish reform school in 1960s Florida.

Elwood Curtis has taken the words of Dr Martin Luther King to heart: he is as good as anyone. Abandoned by his parents, brought up by his loving, strict and clear-sighted grandmother, Elwood is about to enroll in the local black college. But given the time and the place, one innocent mistake is enough to destroy his future, and so Elwood arrives at The Nickel Academy, which claims to provide 'physical, intellectual and moral training' which will equip its inmates to become 'honorable and honest men'.

In reality, the Nickel Academy is a chamber of horrors, where physical, emotional and sexual abuse is rife, where corrupt officials and tradesmen do a brisk trade in supplies intended for the school, and where any boy who resists is likely to disappear 'out back'. Stunned to find himself in this vicious environment, Elwood tries to hold on to Dr King's ringing assertion, 'Throw us in jail, and we will still love you.' But Elwood's fellow inmate and new friend Turner thinks Elwood is naive and worse; the world is crooked, and the only way to survive is to emulate the cruelty and cynicism of their oppressors.

The tension between Elwood's idealism and Turner's skepticism leads to a decision which will have decades-long repercussions.

Based on the history of a real reform school in Florida that operated for one hundred and eleven years and warped and destroyed the lives of thousands of children, The Nickel Boys is a devastating, driven narrative by a great American novelist whose work is essential to understanding the current reality of the United States.]]>

Painted Horses 18668236
Catherine Lemay is a young archaeologist on her way to Montana, with a huge task before her—a canyon “as deep as the devil’s own appetites. Working ahead of a major dam project, she has one summer to prove nothing of historical value will be lost in the flood. From the moment she arrives, nothing is familiar—the vastness of the canyon itself mocks the contained, artifact-rich digs in post-Blitz London where she cut her teeth. And then there’s John H, a former mustanger and veteran of the U.S. Army’s last mounted cavalry campaign, living a fugitive life in the canyon. John H inspires Catherine to see beauty in the stark landscape, and her heart opens to more than just the vanished past. Painted Horses sends a dauntless young woman on a heroic quest, sings a love song to the horseman’s vanishing way of life, and reminds us that love and ambition, tradition and the future, often make strange bedfellows. It establishes Malcolm Brooks as an extraordinary new talent.]]>

Cloudmaker 54313613 Painted Horses was a national bestseller, an Amazon 100 Best Books of the year, #1 Indie Next Great Read, an Indies Introduce selection, a Barnes & Noble Discover Selection, and an Amazon Debut Spotlight If Painted Horses was Malcolm's homage to Harrison and Ondaatje, Cloudmaker recalls the spirit of Mark Twain. This is for readers of Jonathan Evison, Brady Udall, and Jonathan Miles. We are coming off a strong sales track for Painted Horses, and Malcolm charmed the booksellers and librarians. There is a lot of goodwill for him. Brooks tells a story of a forgotten era, a time of tinkerers and invention, of Amelia Earhart (whose final flight gives the book its arc) and "Lindy Fever," and Brooks' budding inventor and his liberated female cousin are tremendously appealing. It's also about the moment when evangelical Christianity entered the modern, mass media era, with the newly invented megachurch and sermons broadcast over airwaves. The twin drives of progress/liberation and a sense of hastening our downfall give the book its heft.
Cloudmaker has the feel, like Virgil Wander, of a more innocent time. It's great escapist fare arriving at a time when readers are hungry for it. The plane that Huck endeavors to build is based on the Pietenpol Air Camper, one of the build-at-home models that showed aspiring aviators how to adapt a car engine for flight. Brooks' essays, articles, and short fiction have appeared in a variety of publications, including Gray's Sporting Journal, Outside, Sports Afield, and Montana Quarterly, among others.]]>

<![CDATA[A Praying Church: Becoming a People of Hope in a Discouraging World]]> 77266103
In our current culture, the church and prayer are often dismissed as irrelevant. But when believers gather and pray together, powerful things happen: the Spirit equips the saints for ministry, the helpless are met with help, and believers experience the joy of being led by the Spirit of Jesus. In this book, Paul E. Miller, bestselling author of A Praying Life, casts a vision for a return to the simple yet life-changing practice of praying together.

Through personal stories and biblical examples, Miller teaches the why, what, and how of praying together. Readers will learn how praying with other Christians can transform their communities into beacons of hope and be given practical strategies―such as finding a prayer partner and prioritizing a structured prayer time―to implement these changes in their own church.

Ideal for Group Study: Small groups, Sunday school classes, and others will find helpful strategies to think through and discuss

The Road 350540 The searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son’s fight to survive.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, “each the other’s world entire, are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.]]>

From a former marine and Yale Law School graduate now serving as a U.S. Senator from Ohio and the Republican Vice Presidential candidate for the 2024 election, an incisive account of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town that offers a broader, probing look at the struggles of America's white working class.

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for more than forty years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

The Vance family story begins hopefully in postwar America. J. D.'s grandparents were "dirt poor and in love," and moved north from Kentucky's Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually one of their grandchildren would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of success in achieving generational upward mobility. But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that J.D.'s grandparents, aunt, uncle, and, most of all, his mother struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life, never fully escaping the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America. With piercing honesty, Vance shows how he himself still carries around the demons of his chaotic family history.

A deeply moving memoir, with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country.]]>
