Mikage, the heroine of Kitchen, is an orphan raised by her grandmother, who has passed away. Grieving, she is taken in by her friend Yoichi and his mother (who was once his father), Eriko. As the three of them form an improvised family that soon weathers its own tragic losses, Yoshimoto spins a lovely, evocative tale that recalls early Marguerite Duras. Quite entertaining. Feels very 2020. Has some very good bits but gets a bit tedious, I thought. The comments on online culture and cancel culture are actually quite brilliant, though. They're not obvious, and I guess every reader can make his/her own interpretation. And yeah, can't say I was impressed by the ending, it felt like taken from a "clever" 90s movie.

I enjoyed Oates' feminist rewriting of the life of Marilyn Monroe. The reader gets a grim portrait of the life behind the shiny walls of glamour. At times, I think the style gets a bit too obvious, too fictionalised perhaps, and even though Oates herself says clearly that you should read this as a work of fiction, it's hard not to compare the book to what you already know about Monroe and her movies.

Intermezzo 208931300 An exquisitely moving story about grief, love, and family—but especially love—from the global phenomenon Sally Rooney.

Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common.

Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke.

Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past, and their lives become rapidly and intensely intertwined.

For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude—a period of desire, despair, and possibility; a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.]]>

This book is a must-read, not because it's perfect, but because when it shines, it's absolutely brilliant. The story of the two brothers, Ivan and Peter, and the woman Margaret is captivating and melancholically thoughtful. I especially loved to read the parts told from Ivan's point of view, and Sally Rooney really succeeds in creating an interesting character in him. My only disappointment is that the story is not more about him, but instead focuses too much on Peter, whose stream-of-consciousness introspections get a bit overworked towards the end. Still, big fan of Sally Rooney, and will keep reading her books.

<![CDATA[Thomas Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century: An Introduction]]> 33866622 An introduction to Thomas Piketty’s monumental workUS Nobel Prize–winner Paul Krugman described Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century as “perhaps the most important book of the last decade.â€ It has sparked major international debates, dominated bestseller lists and generated a level of enthusiasm—as well as intense criticism—in a way no other economic or sociological work has in a long time. Piketty has been described as a new Karl Marx and placed in the same league as the economist John Maynard Keynes.

The “rock star economist’sâ€ underlying thesis is that inequality under capitalism has reached dramatic levels in the last few decades and continues to grow—and that this is not by chance. A small elite is making itself richer and richer and acquiring everincreasing levels of power.

Given the sensational reception of Piketty’s not-so-easily digested 800-page study, the question as to where the hype around the book comes from deserves to be asked. What does it get right? And what should we make of it—both of the book itself and of the criticism it has received? This introduction lays out the argument of Piketty’s monumental work in a compact and understandable format, while also investigating the controversies Piketty has stirred up. In addition, the two authors demonstrate the limits, contradictions and errors of the so-called Piketty revolution.]]>

Great on many levels, deep, interesting, and I started devouring it from the first page. So why not five stars? I felt it lost a lot of pace towards the end. In the first half, Kundera managed to create a work of fiction with both literary and philosophical qualities, but I felt the former started missing the closer I got to the end. Still, a very rewarding book to read, and the critique of the Soviet system is still relevant concerning many modern-day equivalents around the world.

<![CDATA[Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture]]> 134119018 A history and investigation of a world ruled by algorithms, which determine the shape of culture itself.

From trendy restaurants to city grids, to TikTok and Netflix feeds the world round, algorithmic recommendations dictate our experiences and choices. The algorithm is present in the familiar neon signs and exposed brick of Internet cafes, be it in Nairobi or Portland, and the skeletal, modern furniture of Airbnbs in cities big and small. Over the last decade, this network of mathematically determined decisions has taken over, almost unnoticed—informing the songs we listen to, the friends with whom we stay in touch—as we’ve grown increasingly accustomed to our insipid new normal.

This ever-tightening web woven by algorithms is called “Filterworld.â€ Kyle Chayka shows us how online and offline spaces alike have been engineered for seamless consumption, becoming a source of pervasive anxiety in the process. Users of technology have been forced to contend with data-driven equations that try to anticipate their desires—and often get them wrong. What results is a state of docility that allows tech companies to curtail human experiences—human lives—for profit. But to have our tastes, behaviors, and emotions governed by computers, while convenient, does nothing short of call the very notion of free will into question.

In Filterworld, Chayka traces this creeping, machine-guided curation as it infiltrates the furthest reaches of our digital, physical, and psychological spaces. With algorithms increasingly influencing not just what culture we consume, but what culture is produced, urgent questions What happens when shareability supersedes messiness, innovation, and creativity—the qualities that make us human? What does it mean to make a choice when the options have been so carefully arranged for us? Is personal freedom possible on the Internet?

To the last question, Filterworld argues yes—but to escape Filterworld, and even transcend it, we must first understand it.]]>

Overall very interesting. I can see that some people criticise it for being too personal and not backed up by enough science, but I feel that it could have been even more personal. This topic is not some that you can get clear scientific answers to, because it has more to do with behaviour, aesthetics, preferences and so on. I've been without Spotify for a year now, and I feel that I actually DO listen more actively to the albums I buy on vinyl or Bandcamp. But can I prove it? No, you just have to take my word for it, and try it out for yourself.

<![CDATA[Time of the Magicians: Wittgenstein, Benjamin, Cassirer, Heidegger, and the Decade That Reinvented Philosophy]]> 49099790 A grand narrative of the intertwining lives of Walter Benjamin, Martin Heidegger, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Ernst Cassirer, major philosophers whose ideas shaped the twentieth century

The year is 1919. The horror of the First World War is still fresh for the protagonists of Time of the Magicians, each of whom finds himself at a crucial juncture. Benjamin, whose life is characterized by false starts and unfinished projects, is trying to flee his overbearing father and floundering in his academic career, living hand to mouth as a critic. Wittgenstein, by contrast, has dramatically decided to divest himself of the monumental fortune he stands to inherit, as a scion of one of the wealthiest industrial families in Europe, in search of absolute spiritual clarity. Meanwhile, Heidegger, having managed to avoid combat in war by serving instead as a meteorologist, is carefully cultivating his career, aligning himself with the great Edmund Husserl and renouncing his prior Catholic associations. Finally, Cassirer is working furiously on the margins of academia, applying himself intensely to his writing and the possibility of a career at Hamburg University. The stage is set for a great intellectual drama, which will unfold across the next decade. The lives and ideas of this extraordinary philosophical quartet will converge as they become world historical figures. But as the Second World War looms on the horizon, their fates will be very different.

Wolfram Eilenberger stylishly traces the paths of these remarkable and turbulent lives, which feature not only philosophy but some of the most important economists, politicians, journalists, and artists of the century, including John Maynard Keynes, Hannah Arendt, and Bertrand Russell. In doing so, he tells a gripping story about some of history's most ambitious and passionate thinkers, and illuminates with rare clarity and economy their brilliant ideas, which all too often have been regarded as enigmatic or opaque.]]>

Trion 58492077
When Hugo takes a room in the house of one of Stockholm’s wealthiest families, he unwittingly invites himself into the lives of people he will be unable to forget: Thora, a beautiful descendant of old money, and her childhood best friend August, who dreams of art. None of them have anything in common, but find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other.

Decades later, a young woman shows up on Hugo’s door in New York one morning, hoping to stay with him. She introduces herself as the child of Thora and August, and comes carrying questions about her parents that send Hugo reeling back to his youth—to two euphoric summers in Stockholm, and people to whom he is now a stranger.

Timelessly familiar, tender and exultant, The Trio is a novel about the choices we could have made. About who we may have been, and the relationships that influence and linger on with us, long after they have come to an end.]]>

I'm not an expert on Jung, but I've read some opinions of readers who feel that Maggie Hyde focuses too much on Jung's mystic side. Can't say if it's true or not, but for someone like me who has long been almost a scientific rationalist, the views expressed in this book are fascinating and challenging. I'm not convinced, but this little, nicely illustrated introduction to Jung made me think outside of the box. A decent read; you can read it in a day or two! (Well worth reading again, also...)

<![CDATA[The Northern Silence: Journeys in Nordic Music and Culture]]> 59017713 Ìę
Once considered a musical backwater, the Nordic region is now a musical powerhouse. Conductors from Denmark and Finland dominate the British and American orchestral scene. Interest in the old masters Sibelius and Grieg is soaring and progressive pop artists like Björk continue to fascinate as much as they entertain.
Ìę
Andrew Mellor journeys to the heart of the Nordic cultural psyche. From Reykjavik to Rovaniemi, he examines the success of Nordic music’s performers, the attitude of its audiences, and the sound of its composers past and present—celebrating along the way some of the most remarkable music ever written. Mellor peers into the dark side of the Scandinavian utopia, from xenophobia and alcoholism to parochialism and the twilight of the social democratic dream. Drawing on a range of genres and firsthand encounters, he reveals that our fascination with Nordic societies and our love for Nordic music might be more intertwined than first thought.]]>

Mostly focused on classical music, with some alternative music and crossover artists also featured (such as Björk). Very passionately written, with lots of fascinating anecdotes and interesting comments on the Nordic style and culture, spiced with amusing thoughts on the psyche of its inhabitants. Teh book spends a lot of content on Iceland and Finland though, with Denmark somewhere in between, and Sweden somewhat in the shadow. Mellor has a lot of knowledge of the Icelandic scene, so if you’re into the Icelandic sound, you have lots to discover here. However, I feel the book lacks some more comments on the Swedish scene. Musicians and bands such as Anna von Hauswolff, Fever Ray/The Knife, JosĂ© Gonzales and Karin Rehnqvist are not even mentioned. The split between the Nordic countries doesn’t have to be mathematically exact, but when the lack of focus on Sweden and partly also Norway gets too apparent, one feels that a book that sets out to describe the Nordic Sound misses its target a bit. But still, overall, a very readable book.

<![CDATA[Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention and How to Think Deeply Again]]> 57933306 Our ability to pay attention is collapsing. From the New York Times bestselling author of Chasing the Scream and Lost Connections comes a groundbreaking examination of why this is happening--and how to get our attention back.

In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions--even abandoning his phone for three months--but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention--and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

We think our inability to focus is a personal failure to exert enough willpower over our devices. The truth is even more disturbing: our focus has been stolen by powerful external forces that have left us uniquely vulnerable to corporations determined to raid our attention for profit. Hari found that there are twelve deep causes of this crisis, from the decline of mind-wandering to rising pollution, all of which have robbed some of our attention. In Stolen Focus, he introduces readers to Silicon Valley dissidents who learned to hack human attention, and veterinarians who diagnose dogs with ADHD. He explores a favela in Rio de Janeiro where everyone lost their attention in a particularly surreal way, and an office in New Zealand that discovered a remarkable technique to restore workers' productivity.

Crucially, Hari learned how we can reclaim our focus--as individuals, and as a society--if we are determined to fight for it. Stolen Focus will transform the debate about attention and finally show us how to get it back.]]>

Almost five stars. The book starts of with an amazing 100 pages or so, analysing what has gone wrong with focus in our modern society. There are some chapters that I feel I want to read again. Towards the end, however, the book loses some of its pace. The next to last chapter talks a lot about children and play, and makes some assumptions that I wasn’t so convinced were true (such as that schools today don’t encourage play but only learning - it really isn’t that bad, although a lot can be improved). Also, the book drifts a bit away from the focus-perspective. The final chapter is an interesting recap, but could have been longer.

A pretty decent introduction to the pessimist Shopenhauer’s work. I am mostly interested in his work for his aesthetic contribution, and especially for his thoughts on music, but his metaphysics seemed to me a mess, and still do after reading this book. As this VSI book confirms, Shopenhauer is a nice philosopher to read and disagree with. Now, I’ll give The World as Will and Representation another go!

But it was only much later, in 2005, that Houellebecq began to translate and write a commentary on Schopenhauer's work. He thought of turning it into a book but soon abandoned the idea and the text remained unpublished until 2017. To let Houellebecq, the writer you love to hate, who's a right-wing cynic and opponent to many important movements in society, write a book about his love for Schopenhauer, seemed like just the book for me. Houellebecq is a brilliant writer, and I think it's important in life to read texts from people who think differently than yourself. And the booked seemed promising at first. However, as the chapters progressed, Houellebecq's actual contribution to Schopenhauer's thought became more and more watered down. So much, in fact, to the extent that in the end, Houellebecq provides little less than long texts from Schopenhauer, followed by comments like "is it though?" or simply no comment at all. On top of this, he writes the book for men, which can be seen on how he addresses certain issues. Basically, "if a woman does this and this to you", and so on. He probably enjoys this, because his philosophy is to a great extent based on being a negation of many progressive movements today.
Read it, by all means. It's short. But his novels are better.

Very different from what I expected. First pages I kept waiting for some kind of "normal" story to be introduced, but no. This is a very journalistic novel, and a kind of mindful search after a girl who went missing during the Nazi occupation of France. I wasn't blown away, but at the same time, I couldn't put the book down. Kept coming back to it while reading other books. It's sad and beautiful, an important document on events and persons in Paris during the second world war.

Pretty good book on the downside of smartphone usage and social media. The book is very theoretical at first, and it's thorough in its exposé of the psychological triggers behind how smartphone and social media programmers try their best to hack the brains of the users.

<![CDATA[Cynical Theories: How Activist Scholarship Made Everything about Race, Gender, and Identity—and Why This Harms Everybody]]> 53052177
In this probing and intrepid volume, Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay document the evolution of the dogma that informs these ideas, from its coarse origins in French postmodernism to its refinement within activist academic fields.

Today this dogma is recognizable as much by its effects, such as cancel culture and social-media dogpiles, as by its tenets, which are all too often embraced as axiomatic in mainstream media: knowledge is a social construct; science and reason are tools of oppression; all human interactions are sites of oppressive power play; and language is dangerous.

As Pluckrose and Lindsay warn, the unchecked proliferation of these anti-Enlightenment beliefs present a threat not only to liberal democracy but also to modernity itself. While acknowledging the need to challenge the complacency of those who think a just society has been fully achieved, Pluckrose and Lindsay break down how this often-radical activist scholarship does far more harm than good, not least to those marginalized communities it claims to champion. They also detail its alarmingly inconsistent and illiberal ethics.

Only through a proper understanding of the evolution of these ideas, they conclude, can those who value science, reason, and consistently liberal ethics successfully challenge this harmful and authoritarian orthodoxy—in the academy, in culture, and beyond.]]>

It does find a lot of examples of actual academic writing that is so way of from anything that could ever be called science that it almost makes you afraid of the dark. And yet, some of this discourse has managed to nestle into important institutions in society, so it's important that people like Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay decided to really make research into what these theories are really about.
It's mostly on two points that the book falters. First of all, you get the feeling that the authors are interpreting post-modern theory and Foucault in the worst way possible, not acknowledging the important parts of this heritage enough. Intersectionality wasn't only built on Foucault, and has many branches, and it seems to me that there's a lot more positive stuff from where that comes from. If you read texts from writers talking about intersectionality, Lindsay's and Pluckrose's account does seem a bit unfair. Secondly, the liberal agenda they present in the final chapters feel too close to someone preaching a religion. And this wasn't supposed to be the case, since it's exactly religion that they accuse their opponents of practising. As with any ideology, liberalism sounds good on paper, but has its fair share of odd interpretations and bad implementations (neoliberalism being one) to deal with.]]>

The book is presented to the readers in an unfortunate matter. So, to be clear, the authors want complete equality for all, and want everybody to be treated with full respect, no matter where you come from or what your sexual preference is or your experienced gender. The authors are liberals, not far-right conservatives. The reason they wrote this book is because they think that a lot of the post-modern theories on the subject are actually harming the fight for more equality, not helping it.
The book is a well-researched and good book on many accounts. It does find a lot of examples of actual academic writing that is so way of from anything that could ever be called science that it almost makes you afraid of the dark. We are living through a postmodern era in which the grand narratives of religion and political ideology have collapsed. Both of them commit to the same mistake; while being really good at getting you sucked into their narrative, the way that they present the world is very one-sided. Chomsky constantly focuses on the evils of the US but not of the evils of the nation that the US happens to be at war with. Murray spends a lot of energy finding examples where gender, race, and identity politics have clearly stepped over the line, but he doesn't stop to think that there might also be a much-needed side of the coin as well.
Especially when discussing race, Murray finds the worst examples of movements tearing down everything in their path, and some of the examples of progressive, even left-wing, academics who have expressed themselves in the wrong way, only to be verbally attacked soon after causing them to lose their jobs, are really worrying. But in Murray's narrative, equality between the sexes and races has pretty much been achieved, and therefore, any social justice movement seems to him to be on the wrong path even from the start. He even adds a dubious chapter on race and IQ, leaving the reader with the suspicion that he thinks that society is pretty much equal and that any differences in education and job opportunities are due to differences in IQ. He's right that questions of race and IQ are hard to talk about, almost banned, but he doesn't stop to think whether: 1) this is for the best (for what's the use of these studies?), and 2) there might be other narratives here also, backed up by science. (There exists a lot of literature out there explaining why the IQ differences between groups that we see today will probably even out during the next 100 years.)
Also, what about such things as role models? Only 20 years ago, seeing female film composers and film directors was very rare. Our modern society has in some places helped women get into these fields by positive reinforcement. Then the emergence of women as composers and film-makers have started to inspire other women ("if she can, so can I!"), and thus, the need for special support for women in these fields have started to wane. So it's important to introduce role models first, to inspire others, and you do this by supporting one group especially (such as an ethnic minority or, in the case above, women). Murray doesn't compare his gloomy writings on extreme cases with these cases, and so, his view is very much part of a specific right-wing narrative.
I didn't really enjoy reading this book, but it's good to have read it, so that I can make up my own mind about Douglas Murray. Democracy is built upon free speech and free discussion, so we should always think twice before excluding some people with uncomfortable views from the arena. That doesn't mean that I agree with what Murray writes - he's being far too simplistic - but that I'm ready to defend free speech as far as it is possible.]]>

<![CDATA[The Retreat of Western Liberalism]]> 34496942 Time to Start Thinking, Financial Times chief US columnist and commentator Edward Luce charted the course of America's relative decline, proving to be a prescient voice on our current social and political turmoil.

In The Retreat of Western Liberalism, Luce makes a larger statement about the weakening of western hegemony and the crisis of liberal democracy--of which Donald Trump and his European counterparts are not the cause, but a terrifying symptom. Luce argues that we are on a menacing trajectory brought about by ignorance of what it took to build the West, arrogance towards society's economic losers, and complacency about our system's durability--attitudes that have been emerging since the fall of the Berlin Wall. We cannot move forward without a clear diagnosis of what has gone wrong. Unless the West can rekindle an economy that produces gains for the majority of its people, its political liberties may be doomed. The West's faith in history teaches us to take democracy for granted. Reality tells us something troublingly different.

Combining on-the-ground reporting with intelligent synthesis of the literature and economic analysis, Luce offers a detailed projection of the consequences of the Trump administration, the rise of European populism, and a forward-thinking analysis of what those who believe in enlightenment values must do to defend them from the multiple onslaughts they face in the coming years.]]>

Also, every attempt before the election to shut down Trump ("after such a comment, he's bound to be doomed" and so on) just seemed to make his following grow even more. The tactics to vilify your opponent's voters never seems to be a good move. It backfires.
Luce is a damn good writer in his field, which is why this book is not only interesting but also a very rewarding read. This book tries to find an explanation to Donald Trump's surprising victory over Hilary Clinton in the 2016 US election. The interesting part here is that Luce, albeit defending liberalism as a core idea, blames identity liberalism partly for this. Simplifying things, and calling everyone who votes for Trump a racist and sexist bigot just because Trump himself is one, is not helping, Luce claims, and I think he might be right in this.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup "unicorn" promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood tests significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at $9 billion, putting Holmes's worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: The technology didn't work.

For years, Holmes had been misleading investors, FDA officials, and her own employees. When Carreyrou, working at The Wall Street Journal, got a tip from a former Theranos employee and started asking questions, both Carreyrou and the Journal were threatened with lawsuits. Undaunted, the newspaper ran the first of dozens of Theranos articles in late 2015. By early 2017, the company's value was zero and Holmes faced potential legal action from the government and her investors.

Here is the riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a disturbing cautionary tale set amid the bold promises and gold-rush frenzy of Silicon Valley.]]>

Super interesting book, and a completely mind-blowing story, but perhaps a little bit too repetitive for my taste. You sort of got what the book was going to be about within the first chapters, and then you were waiting and waiting for the thing to explode, and that's where the book gets a bit tedious, i.e. in all the stories leading up to the grand finale.

Very readable! When Stephen Hawking is at his best, his explanations are a revelation. He really had the ability to explain really difficult subjects in a way that anybody (well, almost) who wants to understand sort of what it is about will not be disappointed. Sometimes, the book is a bit repetitious, and some of Hawking's answers are in a field that he's not an expert, and that shows. It's still cool that he's trying to give answers to questions about everything from space travel to environmental politics, but the book definitely has its strong and weak sides.

Creativity Code 43382084 The award-winning author of The Music of the Primes explores the future of creativity and how machine learning will disrupt, enrich, and transform our understanding of what it means to be human.

Can a well-programmed machine do anything a human can―only better? Complex algorithms are choosing our music, picking our partners, and driving our investments. They can navigate more data than a doctor or lawyer and act with greater precision. For many years we’ve taken solace in the notion that they can’t create. But now that algorithms can learn and adapt, does the future of creativity belong to machines, too?

It is hard to imagine a better guide to the bewildering world of artificial intelligence than Marcus du Sautoy, a celebrated Oxford mathematician whose work on symmetry in the ninth dimension has taken him to the vertiginous edge of mathematical understanding. In The Creativity Code he considers what machine learning means for the future of creativity. The Pollockizer can produce drip paintings in the style of Jackson Pollock, Botnik spins off fanciful (if improbable) scenes inspired by J. K. Rowling, and the music-composing algorithm Emmy managed to fool a panel of Bach experts. But do these programs just mimic, or do they have what it takes to create? Du Sautoy argues that to answer this question, we need to understand how the algorithms that drive them work―and this brings him back to his own subject of mathematics, with its puzzles, constraints, and enticing possibilities.

While most recent books on AI focus on the future of work, The Creativity Code moves us to the forefront of creative new technologies and offers a more positive and unexpected vision of our future cohabitation with machines. It challenges us to reconsider what it means to be human―and to crack the creativity code.]]>

<![CDATA[Galileo's Error: Foundations for a New Science of Consciousness]]> 43069288
Understanding how brains produce consciousness is one of the great scientific challenges of our age. Some philosophers argue that consciousness is something "extra," beyond the physical workings of the brain. Others think that if we persist in our standard scientific methods, our questions about consciousness will eventually be answered. And some even suggest that the mystery is so deep, it will never be solved. Decades have been spent trying to explain consciousness from within our current scientific paradigm, but little progress has been made.

Now, Philip Goff offers an exciting alternative that could pave the way forward. Rooted in an analysis of the philosophical underpinnings of modern science and based on the early twentieth-century work of Arthur Eddington and Bertrand Russell, Goff makes the case for panpsychism, a theory which posits that consciousness is not confined to biological entities but is a fundamental feature of all physical matter—from subatomic particles to the human brain. In Galileo's Error, he has provided the first step on a new path to the final theory of human consciousness.]]>

In Killing Commendatore, a thirty-something portrait painter in Tokyo is abandoned by his wife and finds himself holed up in the mountain home of a famous artist, Tomohiko Amada. When he discovers a previously unseen painting in the attic, he unintentionally opens a circle of mysterious circumstances. To close it, he must complete a journey that involves a mysterious ringing bell, a two-foot-high physical manifestation of an Idea, a dapper businessman who lives across the valley, a precocious thirteen-year-old girl, a Nazi assassination attempt during World War II in Vienna, a pit in the woods behind the artist’s home, and an underworld haunted by Double Metaphors. Such a great start! The book completely captured me and I read like crazy until... well, somewhere 2/3 into the book. I don't know what happens, or doesn't happen. It's like the book starts to focus on the wrong things a bit. The build-up was so beautiful, but a lot of the charm gets lost in the end. Still, a great ambitious novel by the wonderful writer Murakami.

The Corrections 3805 After almost fifty years as a wife and mother, Enid Lambert is ready to have some fun. Unfortunately, her husband, Alfred, is losing his sanity to Parkinson's disease, and their children have long since flown the family nest to the catastrophes of their own lives. The oldest, Gary, a once-stable portfolio manager and family man, is trying to convince his wife and himself, despite clear signs to the contrary, that he is not clinically depressed. The middle child, Chip, has lost his seemingly secure academic job and is failing spectacularly at his new line of work. And Denise, the youngest, has escaped a disastrous marriage only to pour her youth and beauty down the drain of an affair with a married man - or so her mother fears. Desperate for some pleasure to look forward to, Enid has set her heart on an elusive goal: bringing her family together for one last Christmas at home.
Stretching from the Midwest at midcentury to the Wall Street and Eastern Europe of today, "The Corrections" brings an old-fashioned world of civic virtue and sexual inhibitions into violent collision with the era of home surveillance, hands-off parenting, do-it-yourself mental healthcare, and globalised greed. Richly realistic, darkly hilarious, deeply humane, it confirms Jonathan Franzen as one of our most brilliant interpreters of American society and the American soul.]]>

The Dwarf 214805
PĂ€r Lagerkvist's richly philosophical novel The Dwarf is an exploration of individual and social identity. The novel, set in a time when Italian towns feuded over the outcome of the last feud, centers on a social outcast, the court dwarf Piccoline. From his special vantage point Piccoline comments on the court's prurience and on political intrigue as the town is gripped by a siege. The authors, who consider writers from Aristotle to Caxton to Saussure, have fully revised the original edition of this text. This is a really well-written introduction to Linguistic Thought for two reasons. First, it is lucid and interesting to read. The authors present each thinker with an interesting extract from an important text, and then present the thinker's main standpoint in a way that is neither too simplified nor too academic. Second, it successfully bridges the gap between linguistics and philosophy. Too often, philosophers of language don't bother to consider up-to-date linguistic thought, and likewise many linguists work within their own field and don't bother discussing their work from a philosophical viewpoint. An exception to this trend is of course Noam Chomsky, but his work is not discussed in this book. Both Chomsky and the influential Ludwig Wittgenstein (that I feel every linguist should try to read!) are presented in Volume II in this series, a book I have yet to purchase and read.

<![CDATA[Elastic: Flexible Thinking in a Time of Change]]> 34342016 Subliminal and The Drunkard's Walk, a groundbreaking new look at the neuroscience of change, and at how tapping into elastic thinking will help us thrive in the modern world.

Drawing on cutting-edge research, Leonard Mlodinow takes us on an illuminating journey through the mechanics of our minds as we navigate the rapidly changing landscapes around us. Out of the exploratory instincts that allowed our ancestors to prosper hundreds of thousands of years ago, humans developed a cognitive style that Mlodinow terms elastic thinking, a unique set of talents that include neophilia (an affinity for novelty), schizotypy (a tendency toward unusual perception), imagination and idea generation, and divergent and integrative thinking. These are the qualities that enabled innovators from Mary Shelley to Miles Davis, from the inventor of jumbo-sized popcorn to the creators of Pok'mon Go, to effect paradigm shifts in our culture and society. In our age of unprecedented technological innovation and social change, it is more important than ever to encourage these abilities and traits.

How can we train our brains to be more comfortable when confronting change and more adept at innovation? How do our brains generate new ideas, and how can we nurture that process? Why can diversity and even discord be beneficial to our thought process? With his keen acumen and quick wit, Leonard Mlodinow gives us the essential tools to harness the power of elastic thinking in an endlessly dynamic world.

As one reviewer wrote, "Leonard Mlodinow makes you smarter". It's actually true! Not in the IQ sense, but he simply makes you more aware of how you think about things, and how you think to begin with. Sometimes, the book becomes to much filled with anecdotes, and missing a clear structure, and Mlodinow often buys into modern neuropsychology language. "Your brain does this, your brain wants that", and so on. Shifting focus from "you" to "your brain" doesn't in fact explain anything at all (as Wittgenstein pointed out around 70 years ago). But anyway, the book is highly readable and fun, and I did feel a little bit smarter after having read it.

<![CDATA[Decoding Chomsky: Science and Revolutionary Politics]]> 29434916
Occupying a pivotal position in postwar thought, Noam Chomsky is both the founder of modern linguistics and the world’s most prominent political dissident. Chris Knight adopts an anthropologist’s perspective on the twin output of this intellectual giant, acclaimed as much for his denunciations of US foreign policy as for his theories about language and mind. Knight explores the social and institutional context of Chomsky’s thinking, showing how the tension between military funding and his role as linchpin of the political left pressured him to establish a disconnect between science on the one hand and politics on the other, deepening a split between mind and body characteristic of Western philosophy since the Enlightenment. Provocative, fearless, and engaging, this remarkable study explains the enigma of one of the greatest intellectuals of our time.]]>

It's an odd book. When I started reading it, I felt as if it was all a big joke. Like, "the author can't really believe all of this, can he?" But, as it turns out, many of the things that Chomsky has defended in linguistic theory, often without almost any body of evidence at all, are presented in an interesting narrative here. It's a refreshing read. Chomsky is an interesting and important character in the history of linguistics, but the field needs a complete paradigm shift.

William Blake's illustrations for Dante's masterpiece. I must admit, not many of the images are even remotely similar to the mental images I got while reading the book. That is not necessarily a bad thing, though. I like Blake's vision, and some of the images are great pieces of art. This book is not a complete illustration, where only a few illustrations are complete, and many being mere sketches. Blake's intention was certainly to finish a great deal more illustrations, but the incompleteness of the work also makes it fascinating. You get a glimpse of the creative process of one of the great masters of the 19th century.

<![CDATA[Homo Deus: A History of Tomorrow]]> 31138556 Yuval Noah Harari, author of the critically-acclaimed New York Times bestseller and international phenomenon Sapiens, returns with an equally original, compelling, and provocative book, turning his focus toward humanity’s future, and our quest to upgrade humans into gods.

Over the past century humankind has managed to do the impossible and rein in famine, plague, and war. This may seem hard to accept, but, as Harari explains in his trademark style—thorough, yet riveting—famine, plague and war have been transformed from incomprehensible and uncontrollable forces of nature into manageable challenges. For the first time ever, more people die from eating too much than from eating too little; more people die from old age than from infectious diseases; and more people commit suicide than are killed by soldiers, terrorists and criminals put together. The average American is a thousand times more likely to die from binging at McDonalds than from being blown up by Al Qaeda.

What then will replace famine, plague, and war at the top of the human agenda? As the self-made gods of planet earth, what destinies will we set ourselves, and which quests will we undertake? Homo DeusÌęexplores the projects, dreams and nightmares that will shape the twenty-first century—from overcoming death to creating artificial life. It asks the fundamental questions: Where do we go from here? And how will we protect this fragile world from our own destructive powers? This is the next stage of evolution. This isÌęHomo Deus.

With the same insight and clarity that made Sapiens an international hit and a New York Times bestseller, Harari maps out our future.

]]>
450 Yuval Noah Harari Mikael 3 Also, since he's mentioning evolution so often - why would evolution spend so much effort (metaphorically) to create something like consciousness, that would then just be a trick played on its owners to make them believe they have free will when they really don't? It would be much easier, evolutionary, to NOT let species develop consciousness, because if we're nothing but brain processes, then there's no evolutionary advantage in having consciousness. As you can probably understand from what I've already written, I do believe in free will (albeit we make lots of subconscious choices as well, no doubt), and I believe we developed consciousness in order to be able to evaluate different situations and make the right choices. Should I eat a lot of sugar? My body says yes, due to evolutionary reasons, but I also know that a lot of sugar is not good in the long run (for my teeth, for my body, for my mind, and so on). So do I abstain from sugar most days even though I crave it, to ripe the fruits of this later (with better health)? This is where free will comes in - to combat cravings like too much sugar, too much meat, and so on. Or wasn't Harari's choice to become a vegan made by himself, thanks to his free will?]]> 4.19 2015 Homo Deus: A History of Tomorrow

review:
As is the case with Sapiens, Homo Deus is very well written and engaging. Homo Deus tends to get a bit repetitive, however, and on some occasions, Harari reveals himself to be a terrible cognitive scientist. Most importantly, I'm not even sure what he is talking about when he's talking about free will. First, it seems that he doesn't believe in it - we're just brain processes formed by millions of years of evolution. Then, he's clearly encouraging us to make choices. So what is it? Can we make free choices? If I'm thinking right now: "I can't make free choices, because free will is an illusion", was even that thought just a brain process that free will had nothing to do with? ANY choice you make is illusory if you don't believe in free will, and it's fascinating that Harari doesn't even discuss the implications of this further than he does in Homo Deus.
Also, since he's mentioning evolution so often - why would evolution spend so much effort (metaphorically) to create something like consciousness, that would then just be a trick played on its owners to make them believe they have free will when they really don't? Or wasn't Harari's choice to become a vegan made by himself, thanks to his free will?

It's hard to resist this book. It is such a well-written popular science book that you get swept along from the first pages already, and by the wheat chapter, Harari had my full attention. But my interest slowly faded. Despite some sensational stories in it, probably told in a simplistic way (hey, it's popular science, remember!), that grabbed my attention, I felt as the book progressed that it was simply retelling a lot that was already known outside the world of popular science.
The book is supposed to be about the history of humankind, but, as is the norm, it leans very much towards a history of the Western world. Music as an Art 37941913 Music as an Art, we live at a critical time for classical music, and this book is an important contribution to the debate, of which we stand in need, concerning the place of music in Western civilization.

Music as an Art begins by examining music through a philosophical lens, engaging in discussions about tonality, music and the moral life, music and cognitive science and German idealism, as well as recalling the author's struggle to encourage his students to distinguish the qualities of good music. Scruton then explains--via erudite chapters on Schubert, Britten, Rameau, opera and film--how we can develop greater judgement in music, recognizing both good taste and bad, establishing musical values, as well as musical pleasures.]]>

review:
A kind of addition to Scruton's major work The Aesthetics of Music. This book is filled with great insights into the world of classical music, but it also contains some real disadvantages in that it tries to compare pop music to classical music on classical music's terms. Pop music isn't just rhythm, melody and harmony - timbre plays a great role (not discussed in this book), as well as other things such as novelty, attitude, lyrics, references, and so on. So it's unfair to deem all modern pop music awful on the basis that it is not similar to Western classical music.

How Music Works 13235689
Acting as historian and anthropologist, raconteur and social scientist, he searches for patterns—and shows how those patterns have affected his own work over the years with Talking Heads and his many collaborators, from Brian Eno to Caetano Veloso. Byrne sees music as part of a larger, almost Darwinian pattern of adaptations and responses to its cultural and physical context. His range is panoptic, taking us from Wagnerian opera houses to African villages, from his earliest high school reel-to-reel recordings to his latest work in a home music studio (and all the big studios in between).

Touching on the joy, the physics, and even the business of making music, How Music Works is a brainy, irresistible adventure and an impassioned argument about music’s liberating, life-affirming power.]]>

The book sort of goes all over the place. And yes, it is a very enjoyable read, mostly! Sometimes, I feel that my interest is fading, and I start reading something else. But that's sort of the nature of the book, really. It attacks the question how music works on all fronts, so there's definitely going to be something there for you, reading this review, too! If you enjoy music, that is. Which I think we all do, more or less - it almost seems written in our DNA.

Surprisingly readable little book by mr. ĆœiĆŸek. And wow, I'm so happy to read a philosopher on the left who doesn't try to simplify the refugees debate! It has been almost standard practise within the left to try to do everything to avoid having to talk about the problems that arise with immigration, and this, ĆœiĆŸek believes (and I with him), has only lead to a stronger support for extreme right parties. So ĆœiĆŸek very effectively exposes the impossible position you put yourself in if you try to see the world in black and white (bad anti-immigrants against good refugees). This has lead to avoiding standing up for women's rights even, because the left has been more eager to defend refugees than to criticise obvious oppression within those refugees. (The Cologne incident, for example.)
So, if you're on the left of the political spectrum, read this book. ĆœiĆŸek tries to put most things on their heads, and here, he often succeeds. At least, he makes you think things trough. Einstein's Greatest Mistake 28114511
Widely considered the greatest genius of all time, Albert Einstein revolutionized our understanding of the cosmos with his general theory of relativity and helped lead us into the atomic age. Yet in the final decades of his life, he was ignored by most working scientists, and his ideas were opposed by even his closest friends.
Ìę
How did this happen? Einstein's imagination and self-confidence served him well when he was young. But when it came to the new field of quantum mechanics, the same traits undermined him. Bestselling biographer David Bodanis traces Einstein from the skeptical, erratic student to the world's most brilliant physicist—and then to the desolate, fallen-from-grace celebrity.

I just loved this mix of scientific theory and biography. I'm sure Bodanis spices up the story a bit, but I don't really care. This is popular science, and entertaining! For me, who only vaguely remember the physics I once learnt at school, it made me revisit Einstein's theories and understand them better than I've done before. And getting to know his private life was, I must say, a joy - such an interesting character, and by no means flawless (as indicated by the book title).

From his childhood in Baltimore to his student days in Chicago and at Juilliard, to his first journey to Paris and a life-changing trip to India, Glass movingly recalls his early mentors, while reconstructing the places that helped shape his creative consciousness. Whether describing working as an unlicensed plumber in gritty 1970s New York or composing Satyagraha, Glass breaks across genres and re-creates, here in words, the thrill that results from artistic creation.

Other Minds 28116739
In Other Minds, Peter Godfrey-Smith, a distinguished philosopher of science and a skilled scuba diver, tells a bold new story of how subjective experience crept into being—how nature became aware of itself. As Godfrey-Smith stresses, it is a story that largely occurs in the ocean, where animals first appeared. Tracking the mind’s fitful development, Godfrey-Smith shows how unruly clumps of seaborne cells began living together and became capable of sensing, acting, and signaling. As these primitive organisms became more entangled with others, they grew more complicated. The first nervous systems evolved, probably in ancient relatives of jellyfish; later on, the cephalopods, which began as inconspicuous mollusks, abandoned their shells and rose above the ocean floor, searching for prey and acquiring the greater intelligence needed to do so. Taking an independent route, mammals and birds later began their own evolutionary journeys.

But what kind of intelligence do cephalopods possess? Drawing on the latest scientific research and his own scuba-diving adventures, Godfrey-Smith probes the many mysteries that surround the lineage. How did the octopus, a solitary creature with little social life, become so smart? What is it like to have eight tentacles that are so packed with neurons that they virtually “think for themselvesâ€? What happens when some octopuses abandon their hermit-like ways and congregate, as they do in a unique location off the coast of Australia?

By tracing the question of inner life back to its roots and comparing human beings with our most remarkable animal relatives, Godfrey-Smith casts crucial new light on the octopus mind—and on our own.]]>

Oh my. The premise of this book is so interesting. And so is the first chapter. I was completely hooked. But the author sort of misses his focus - he sort of drifts into anecdotes instead of answering the questions about different types of minds that I was hoping he would set out to do in the book. So, after having finished, I sort of feel like this: 1) Yes, an octopus is an amazing creature. 2) I'm still not sure what is really different between a human mind and an octopus mind, except that humans have much more brain capacity. I wanted to know more of the actual build of the brain - for example, what would an octopus with similar brain capacity to ours look like? Do all clever minds think alike, or can there be great differences as to how intelligence functions?

At the Existentialist Café 25658482 this cocktail!'

From this moment of inspiration, Sartre will create his own extraordinary philosophy of real, experienced life–of love and desire, of freedom and being, of cafĂ©s and waiters, of friendships and revolutionary fervour. It is a philosophy that will enthral Paris and sweep through the world, leaving its mark on post-war liberation movements, from the student uprisings of 1968 to civil rights pioneers.

At the Existentialist CafĂ© tells the story of modern existentialism as one of passionate encounters between people, minds and ideas. From the ‘king and queen of existentialism'–Sartre and de Beauvoir–to their wider circle of friends and adversaries including Albert Camus, Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Iris Murdoch, this book is an enjoyable and original journey through a captivating intellectual movement. Weaving biography and thought, Sarah Bakewell takes us to the heart of a philosophy about life that also changed lives, and that tackled the biggest questions of all: what we are and how we are to live.]]>

<![CDATA[What Are You Looking At?: 150 Years of Modern Art in a Nutshell]]> 15929764 Eats, Shoots & Leaves, art history with a sense of humor

Every year, millions of museum and gallery visitors ponder the modern art on display and secretly ask themselves, "Is this art?" A former director at London's Tate Gallery and now the BBC arts editor, Will Gompertz made it his mission to bring modern art's exciting history alive for everyone, explaining why an unmade bed or a pickled shark can be art—and why a five-year-old couldn't really do it. Rich with extraordinary tales and anecdotes, What Are You Looking At? entertains as it arms readers with the knowledge to truly understand and enjoy what it is they’re looking at.]]>

OK, Tracey Emin is smart, she has humour, and knows how the art establishment and the gossip press work. So, does that make her art good? My bed, which is basically just Tracey Emin's bed placed in an art museum, managed to outrage people. Fine. Jackass can also cause outrages. But is it really art because she says it is? Look, I'm not opposing that her bed can be art, but I'm questioning it because Gompertz didn't really give a good answer to the question. Why would a bed looking the same that you walk by in a hotel not be art? There, you would just think "oh fuck, a dirty, unmade bed, lets move on". You wouldn't react like this if you saw the Venus de Milo suddenly at a hotel - you would stop, stare, and be amazed. But is it art because it causes a certain reaction in the viewers who have to frame her bed into what they know of what should or shouldn't belong in an art museum? Perhaps, or isn't that just a prank? What if Jackass did the same, i.e. exhibited some of their stuff in an art gallery or museum? Is that art? I don't know, and I'm not much the wiser after having read Gompertz' book.

In my opinion, the biggest challenge for artists today is to deal with beauty. Beauty is somehow passé, it's old, it's boring. But that's what makes beauty into such a difficult yet challenging subject today! It's easy to annoy the British press, but it's harder to make something that is both beautiful enough to please and amaze the museum goers, and interesting enough to be considered art and not just random illustration or photography. Challenging, interesting beauty, is there such a thing? Yes, but it's very rare in our society. It's easier to keep a distance to your work, be ironic (since irony works as a shield against any criticism). I find modern art often too safe in its irony, gore, and ugliness. I want something new that we can build on, that can rise up from the dust heaps of post-modernism.

Entertaining book, up until minimalism and pop art, where the explanations started to become less and less compelling. I give it four stars for its entertainment value!]]>

First off, this book is highly entertaining! And it does a splendid job explaining expressionism, pointillism, Duchamp, surrealism, and so on. However! I had already been a fan of all of these art movements, and it's not hard to see for example what Duchamp was doing with his urinal. What Gompertz doesn't succeed in doing is to explain the really modern art to me in a way that is persuasive.

<![CDATA[The Bonobo and the Atheist: In Search of Humanism Among the Primates]]> 4487598
For many years, de Waal has observed chimpanzees soothe distressed neighbors and bonobos share their food. Now he delivers fascinating fresh evidence for the seeds of ethical behavior in primate societies that further cements the case for the biological origins of human fairness. Interweaving vivid tales from the animal kingdom with thoughtful philosophical analysis, de Waal seeks a bottom-up explanation of morality that emphasizes our connection with animals. In doing so, de Waal explores for the first time the implications of his work for our understanding of modern religion. Whatever the role of religious moral imperatives, he sees it as a “Johnny-come-latelyâ€ role that emerged only as an addition to our natural instincts for cooperation and empathy.

But unlike the dogmatic neo-atheist of his book’s title, de Waal does not scorn religion per se. Instead, he draws on the long tradition of humanism exemplified by the painter Hieronymus Bosch and asks reflective readers to consider these issues from a positive perspective: What role, if any, does religion play for a well-functioning society today? And where can believers and nonbelievers alike find the inspiration to lead a good life?

Rich with cultural references and anecdotes of primate behavior, The Bonobo and the Atheist engagingly builds a unique argument grounded in evolutionary biology and moral philosophy. Ever a pioneering thinker, de Waal delivers a heartening and inclusive new perspective on human nature and our struggle to find purpose in our lives.]]>

This book makes some very interesting points, and Frans de Waal argues for his case in a convincing way. Sometimes, it gets a bit too anecdotal and de Waal has a tendency to stretch his thoughts a bit too far in all directions, so that there is some not as exciting reading to do between the very exciting stuff. If this book had been more concise, I might have considered giving it five stars, because it is truly, truly interesting at times. Recommended!

The Long Drop 27415447 A stand-alone true crime thriller from the acclaimed author of the Alex Morrow novels that exposes the dark hearts of the guilty . . . and the innocent.

True 1958, Glasgow. Peter Manuel broke into a suburban villa in Glasgow and murdered three members of the Watt family. William Watt, the father, a successful businessman and entrepreneur, was arrested and jailed for the crime, but the police couldn’t find enough evidence to charge him and he was released. Watt was determined to clear his own name and let it be known that he would pay for information. Peter Manuel contacted him and offered to help. The two men met in a bar and spent the next twelve hours drinking together.

No one knows what happened that night.

When Manuel was finally arrested weeks later on another murder charge, he represented himself in what the newspapers called the trial of the century.

The Long Drop is Denise Mina’s reimagining of the mysterious night Peter Manuel and William Watt spent together, intercut with the transcripted trial. Through a careful reconstruction of events, Mina’s riveting prose attempts to make sense of one of the most baffling and intriguing true crime cases in legal history.

The first two chapters of this book confused me greatly. I didn't know what was going on really, and I tried to connect what I was reading to the text on the back of the book. Not sure if I was perhaps expecting something specific because of the text on the back cover, and this was the reason for my confusion.

He finds a secret message inquiring about a dangerous substance called Dust--and the spy it was intended for finds him.

When she asks Malcolm to keep his eyes open, Malcolm sees suspicious characters everywhere; Lord Asriel, clearly on the run; enforcement agents from the Magisterium; an Egyptian named Coram with warnings just for Malcolm; and a beautiful woman with an evil monkey for a dĂŠmon. <![CDATA[On the Sensations of Tone (Dover Books On Music: Acoustics)]]> 483042 The first two parts of this book deal with the physics and physiology of music. Part I explains the sensation of sound in general, vibrations, sympathetic resonances, and other phenomena. Part II cover combinational tones and beats, and develops Helmholtz's famous theory explaining why harmonious chords are in the ratios of small whole numbers (a problem unsolved since Pythagoras).
Part III contains the author's theory on the aesthetic relationship of musical tones. After a survey of the different principles of musical styles in history (tonal systems of Pythagoras, the Church, the Chinese, Arabs, Persians, and others), he makes a detailed study of our own tonal system (keys, discords, progression of parts).
Important points in this 576-page work are profusely illustrated with graphs, diagrams, tables, and musical examples. 33 appendices discuss pitch, acoustics, and music, and include a very valuable table and study of the history of pitch in Europe from the fourteenth to the nineteenth centuries.]]>

Dense but amazing book on the physics of sound, acoustics, hearing, and the relationship between the science of sound and our aesthetic foundation of music. I can't really get myself to read it all from beginning to end, but I keep coming back to it, reading selected chapters back and forth. A classic in its field, and this edition is beautiful, with awesome images. Despite having over 100 years on its back, this is an awesome book, and a must-have for anybody who wants a deeper understanding of how sound is produced, how it is experienced by us listeners, and how musical foundations are at least partly built around certain physical realities of sound (the overtone series, for example).

<![CDATA[The Upright Thinkers: The Human Journey from Living in Trees to Understanding the Cosmos]]> 22889752 Ìę
Leonard Mlodinow takes us on a passionate and inspiring tour through the exciting history of human progress and the key events in the development of science. In the process, he presents a fascinating new look at the unique characteristics of our species and our society that helped propel us from stone tools to written language and through the birth of chemistry, biology, and modern physics to today’s technological world.
Ìę
Along the way he explores the cultural conditions that influenced scientific thought through the ages and the colorful personalities of some of the great philosophers, scientists, and thinkers: Galileo, who preferred painting and poetry to medicine and dropped out of university; Isaac Newton, who stuck needlelike bodkins into his eyes to better understand changes in light and color; and Antoine Lavoisier, who drank nothing but milk for two weeks to examine its effects on his body. Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, and many lesser-known but equally brilliant minds also populate these pages, each of their stories showing how much of human achievement can be attributed to the stubborn pursuit of simple questions (why? how?), bravely asked.
Ìę
The Upright Thinkers is a book for science lovers and for anyone interested in creative thinking and in our ongoing quest to understand our world. At once deeply informed, accessible, and infused with the author’s trademark wit, this insightful work is a stunning tribute to humanity’s intellectual curiosity.

The book is an exposé of human thinking. It goes back to the earliest humans, and tries to explain how our fascination with knowing how everything works came about. It's a real page-turner, which is not common for books dealing with these subjects. (Some books that are not page-turners are of course also good, in their own right, but take more time to get through.)

Two things that I feel are lacking in this book are perhaps these: 1) More of an analysis of why scientific breakthrough often originate in some countries and not others, and whether this is about to change or not. 2) An attempt to try to discuss the gender issue here, i.e. why so many scientists still are men. There's a small section on one female scientist, with some discussion, but I would have wanted more, since men constitute only 50% of the human race.

The personal side of the book, where Leonard Mlodinow retells discussions on physics and more that he had with his father, are great. When he connects the story to Hitler and human evil (the holocaust and persecution of the Jews), you start thinking that, yeah, humans can be great thinkers, but they can be absolute scum as well. So now I feel I want to read something on sociology, dealing with questions of human evil. Or perhaps I should read Pinker's The Better Angels of our Nature, to try to start thinking positively again.]]>

It's extremely engaging, and despite dealing with ideas too grand for my own knowledge, Mlodinow manages to present them in such a way that you as a reader get a glimpse of what they're about anyway. It's a great resource to be able to explain difficult ideas with simple language.

<![CDATA[Composing Electronic Music: A New Aesthetic]]> 23462759
This convergence of technical and aesthetic trends prompts the need for a new text focused on the opportunities of a sound oriented, multiscale approach to composition of electronic music. Sound oriented means a practice that takes place in the presence of sound. Multiscale means an approach that takes into account the perceptual and physical reality of multiple, interacting time scales-each of which can be composed. After more than a century of research and development, now is an appropriate moment to step back and reevaluate all that has changed under the ground of artistic practice.

Composing Electronic Music outlines a new theory of composition based on the toolkit of electronic music techniques. The theory consists of a framework of concepts and a vocabulary of terms describing musical materials, their transformation, and their organization. Central to this discourse is the notion of narrative structure in composition-how sounds are born, interact, transform, and die. It presents a a tour of facts, history, commentary, opinions, and pointers to interesting ideas and new possibilities to consider and explore.]]>

Scruton gives the reader some very important food for thought, and challenges us to actually step back and think. Think whether some modern art actually is the work of genius that only a chosen few can understand, or whether it is merely a re-used idea hidden behind a certain discourse, in other words, an empty thing taking cover behind a post-modern veil.

Scruton makes so many interesting points in this book that I'm considering marking it with sticky notes to have certain parts ready at hand when I need them. But, unfortunately, Scruton is also very, very conservative. Trying to make a stand against aesthetic nihilism, Scruton contrasts what he considers older, finer works of art with never ones, supposedly bad ones, and asks whether it is not lunacy to judge these on similar grounds. If he would have used the examples Brahms vs. Britney Spears, he would have a point, but he uses Brahms vs. Radiohead, a very bad choice indeed. Radiohead is a great example of modern popular music that is not drenched in conformism or commercialism, and their music can be said to be more interesting than Brahms in a lot of respects. Scruton knows to little of modern popular music to make interesting claims here; he's a fan of the Beatles, but fails to realize that Radiohead is in many ways similar now to what the Beatles were in the 60's.]]>

Roger Scruton is definitely not trying to be fashionable in his aesthetic opinions. Quite the opposite, actually. Fine art darlings such as Adorno get a boot here and there. And yeah, despite being one of those people who actually finds some pleasure in reading Adorno, I also love Scruton's opposing views just as much.

Scruton gives the reader some very important food for thought, and challenges us to actually step back and think. VarifrÄn kommer musiken? 30529802

Bra gjort!

Bra gjort!

Men ÀndÄ mÀrkligt bra.

<![CDATA[Perfume: The Story of a Murderer]]> 343 An alternative cover edition for this ISBN can be found here.

An acclaimed bestseller and international sensation, Patrick Suskind's classic novel provokes a terrifying examination of what happens when one man's indulgence in his greatest passion—his sense of smell—leads to murder.

In the slums of eighteenth-century France, the infant Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift—an absolute sense of smell. As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris, and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs. But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects such as brass doorknobs and fresh-cut wood. Then one day he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the "ultimate perfume"—the scent of a beautiful young virgin. Told with dazzling narrative brilliance, Perfume is a hauntingly powerful tale of murder and sensual depravity.]]>

The book opens up the world of odours to the reader - one constantly tries to imagine how the smells would smell in real life while reading the book. Also, SĂŒskind seems to be very well read in the history of these times (set around the French revolution), and his descriptions of the daily life around 1800 are interesting and trustworthy.

A dark, dark book about terrible crimes committed by a weird man with an amazing sense of smell. The story reminds me a bit of Frankenstein, except for the fact that in Frankenstein, the "monster" is treated badly and therefore does evil things - society drives him into crime - whereas in this book, the circumstances that were present since birth made the main character into a victim of himself, not of society.

Funny and fascinating story by Neil Gaiman - and yeah, I liked it more than American Gods! It hasn't got a single boring phase which you try to read quickly to get past; it's just a darn good adventure. The humour works, the supernatural events are decent, and the mystery part keeps you hooked to the story.

There's nothing that I don't like about this story; it's not really my kind of genre, but it still was a pleasure to read.
