The Gathering 186872450 A detective investigating a grisly crime in rural Alaska finds herself caughtÌýup in the dark secrets andÌýsuperstitions of a small town in this riveting novel from the acclaimed author of The Chalk Man

Deadhart, Alaska. 873. Living.

In a small Alaska town, a boy is found with his throat ripped out and all the blood drained from his body. The inhabitants of Deadhart haven’t seen a killing like this in twenty-five years. But they know who’s responsible: a member of the Colony, an ostracized community of vampyrs living in an old mine settlement deep in the woods.

Detective Barbara Atkins, a specialist in vampyr killings, is called in to officially determine if this is a Colony killing—and authorize a cull. Old suspicions die hard in a town like Deadhart, but Barbara isn’t so sure. Determined to find the truth, she enlists the help of a former Deadhart sheriff, Jenson Tucker, whose investigation into the previous murder almost cost him his life. Since then, Tucker has become a recluse. But he knows the Colony better than almost anyone.

As the pair delve into the town’s history, they uncover secrets darker than they could have imagined. And then another body is found. While the snow thickens and the nights grow longer, a killer stalks Deadhart, and two disparate communities circle each other for blood. Time is running out for Atkins and Tucker to find the truth: Are they hunting a bloodthirsty monster . . . or a twisted psychopath? And which is more dangerous?]]>

Upon reading the blurb I thought this was be a really interesting, creepy read.

Unfortunately it was not.

Having read one of the author’s other books I thought this would have a good plot twist near the end of the book which to be fair it kind of did, but at the same time I feel like I saw the twist coming.

There were WAY TOO MANY characters in this book and the constant change between multiple POVs made it very difficult to follow what was going on in each character’s story. Multiple POV stories aren’t really something I’m a fan of for that exact reason.

None of the characters were really fleshed out either, I felt nothing for any of them. I lost count of the amount of times our protagonist ‘sighed too.

Don’t get me wrong this book wasn’t a total flop in my eyes; there were some good parts. Unfortunately though that seemed to come at the end. The book was over 400 pages long and for a good portion of that (300+) it felt like nothing was really happening.]]>

The Walking Dead original novel series, set in the universe of Robert Kirkman's iconic comic book, continues with The Fall of the Governor Part One. From co-authors Kirkman, creator of the Eisner Award-winning comic as well as executive producer of AMC's blockbuster TV series, and Jay Bonansinga, Stoker Award-finalist and internationally acclaimed author, comes the gripping third novel in this richly woven, page-turning literary saga, which began with The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor.

In Rise of the Governor, uber-villain Philip Blake journeyed from his humble beginnings directly into the dark heart of the zombie apocalypse, and became the self-proclaimed leader of a small town called Woodbury. In The Road to Woodbury, an innocent traveler named Lilly Caul wound up in the terrifying thrall of Phillip Blake’s twisted, violent dictatorship within Woodbury’s ever tightening barricades.

And now, in The Fall of the Governor Part One, the Governor’s descent into madness finally erupts in a tour de force of action and horror. Beloved characters from the comic book, including Rick, Michonne and Glenn, finally make their entrance onto this nightmarish stage, and fans of The Walking Dead will see these characters in a whole new light. Belladonna (Belladonna, #1) 59227936
Orphaned as a baby, nineteen-year-old Signa has been raised by a string of guardians, each one more interested in her wealth than her well-being—and each has met an untimely end. Her remaining relatives are the elusive Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at Thorn Grove, an estate both glittering and gloomy. Its patriarch mourns his late wife through wild parties, while his son grapples for control of the family’s waning reputation, and his daughter suffers from a mysterious illness. But when their mother’s restless spirit appears claiming she was poisoned, Signa realizes that the family she depends on could be in grave danger and enlists the help of a surly stable boy to hunt down the killer.
Ìý
However, Signa’s best chance of uncovering the murderer is an alliance with Death himself, a fascinating, dangerous shadow who has never been far from her side. Though he’s made her life a living hell, Death shows Signa that their growing connection may be more powerful—and more irresistible—than she ever dared imagine.]]>

So I would actually rate this book 3.5 stars out of five purely for the following reasons:

1) the main character Signa appears to be blind as a fruit bat as to the clues that are right in front of her. There were times where I was guessing what was going to happen and I turned out to be correct. Maybe I should be detective?

2) I know the author tried so hard to write a plot twist at the end of this book but to be honest I guessed it about halfway through. I don’t know whether it was a good twist or not. It just seemed a little bit Obvious. (The twist I am referring to is in relation to Sylas).

3) I actually quite liked Death as a character. Not sure how I feel about him knowing Signa since she was just a little baby though; it gives off groomer vibes.

4) I actually didn’t care much for Blythe at all and found myself not interested as to whether she lived or died.

5) I loved the setting of this book; very Gothic-esque.

Overall it was a fairly interesting read & I did find myself thinking about this book quite a bit when I wasn’t reading it and whilst there were many points throughout this book that I was rolling my eyes, I finished it quite quickly. Whether I will read the sequel or not, I haven’t yet decided. ]]>

I was expecting, after seeing Stephen King’s glowing recommendation amongst others on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, that this book was going to be absolutely terrifying. However, unless I’ve got a particularly high terror-threshold, I didn’t really find this book very scary at all.

I found the animal abuse scenes horrendous however. I didn’t like how detailed these parts were, they were the only part I did struggle with.

A very, very interesting concept with regard to what the “virus was and quite gruesome with how quickly it affects its victims. I appreciated how that could actually happen in the real world.

The characters all had their own individual personalities, some much worse than others, and this helped round them out and made me root for a select few.

Overall a good read but if you’re looking for spine tingling horror that makes your blood run cold unfortunately I don’t think that this is it. ]]>

The Drift 60965424 Three ordinary people risk everything for a chance at redemption in this audacious, utterly gripping novel of catastrophe and survival at the end of the world, from the acclaimed author of The Chalk Man

Hannah awakens to carnage, all mangled metal and shattered glass. During a hasty escape from a secluded boarding school, her coach careened over a hillside road during one of the year's heaviest snowstorms, trapping her inside with a handful of survivors, a brewing virus, and no way to call for help. If she and the remaining few want to make it out alive, with their sanity--and secrets--intact, they'll need to work together or they'll be buried alive with the rest of the dead.

A former detective, Meg awakens to a gentle rocking. She is in a cable car suspended far above a snowstorm and surrounded by strangers in the same uniform as her, with no memory of how they got there. They are heading to a mysterious place known to them only as "The Retreat," but when they discover a dead man among their ranks and Meg spies a familiar face, she realizes that there is something far more insidious going on.

Carter is gazing out the window of the abandoned ski chalet that he and his ragtag compatriots call home. Together, they manage a precarious survival, manufacturing vaccines against a deadly virus in exchange for life's essentials. But as their generator begins to waver, the threat of something lurking in the chalet's depths looms larger, and their fragile bonds will be tested when the power finally fails--for good.

The imminent dangers faced by Hannah, Meg, and Carter are each one part of the puzzle. Lurking in their shadows is an even greater threat--one that threatens to consume all of humanity.]]>

Beautiful.
Smart.
Sweet.
Innocent.

At Lancaster Prep, the girls love her. They all want to be her friend. Only I see Wren for who she really is.

A repressed little virgin who keeps her feelings locked up so tight she’s probably close to bursting. She thinks she’s above us all.

Even me.

I shouldn’t be drawn to her. She’s not my type.

Until we’re forced to work together in class and realize we might have more things in common than we originally thought. Soon enough I find myself completely obsessed. I will do anything for this girl to make her fall in love with me.

Anything.]]>

Wren Beaumont is one of the most insufferable main characters I have ever had the displeasure of reading. Her constant 'good girl' trope got weary very quickly and her constant self-doubt and shyness were insufferable. PLUS why does the girl moan everytime she eats something?!

Crew Lancaster is one walking red flag. Why the hell this girl ever thought he was romantic with his insane possessiveness, misogynistic behaviour and let's not forget the actual sexual assault that occurred... His constant claim over her 'You're mine now' gives me vibes of someone who would kill you if you ever dumped him, just so no one else would ever date you. And his absolute obsession with Wren bordering on stalker behaviour was a big problem.

Wren's dad gives me massive incest vibes. She is 'promised' to him and he has a big issue with her ever losing her virginity and basically wants her to be his for as long as she lives. He does not like her boyfriend and thinks that all men are out there to corrupt his precious daughter. But to give him credit, that was exactly Crew's intention and he says as much, about how he wants to corrupt Wren.

Plus OMG. Everytime Wren said something, she 'admitted' it. I lost count of the amount of times the author used the words 'I admit' whenever Wren spoke. GET A THESAURUS. SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO ADMIT EVERYTHING.

This book did NOT need to be 530 odd pages long. After Wren lost her virginity to Crew, the rest of the book was basically just sex scenes.

The other characters were so surface level I never connected with any of them.

The sex offender teacher not getting kicked out until Crew outs him is a massive issue for me as well. Don't these schools vet their teachers, considering how much their parents are probably paying to send their spoiled, self-entitled bratty teenagers there?

God there was so much wrong with this book but I will say it was inspiring because it inspired me never to read another book of Monica Murphy's ever again.

Do yourself a favour and don't bother reading this. Absolute crap from start to finish. There wasn't even any plot. It was just garbage.]]>

As the number of days the couple are missing climbs, DS Walker is joined by the girl's sister. A detective herself from Berlin, she is desperate to find her before it's too late.

Walker remains convinced there is more at play. Working in the organised crime unit has opened his eyes to the growing drug trade in Australia's remote interior. Could this be connected?

The writing flowed easily and was interesting enough to keep me hooked. I can’t stand when the narrator goes off on a tangent but that didn’t happen here; enough happened to keep me and my very short attention span interested throughout.

**SPOILER ALERT**

I kind of guessed that the main character wasn’t the killer even though she was narrating as if she was. However I didn’t see the twist at the end coming. Thumbs up for that.

An interesting read. Would recommend if you’re a fan of murder mysteries. Or even if you’re not!

Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home.

These wholly original and shiver-inducing tales introduce listeners to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge. Introduced and contextualized by bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones, these stories are a celebration of Indigenous peoples survival and imagination, and a glorious reveling in all the things an ill-advised whistle might summon.]]>

An imposing, isolated getaway spot high up in the Swiss Alps is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. How to Kill Your Family 50224049
When I think about what I actually did, I feel somewhat sad that nobody will ever know about the complex operation that I undertook. Getting away with it is highly preferable, of course, but perhaps when I’m long gone, someone will open an old safe and find this confession. The public would reel. After all, almost nobody else in the world can possibly understand how someone, by the tender age of 28, can have calmly killed six members of her family. And then happily got on with the rest of her life, never to regret a thing.

When Grace Bernard discovers her absentee millionaire father has rejected her dying mother’s pleas for help, she vows revenge, and sets about to kill every member of his family. Readers have a front row seat as Grace picks off the family one by one and the result is as and gruesome as it is entertaining in this wickedly dark romp about class, family, love and murder.

But then Grace is imprisoned for a murder she didn’t commit.

Outrageously funny, compulsive and subversive, perfect for fans of Killing Eve and My Sister, the Serial Killer.]]>

Grace takes it upon herself to wipe out the Mortimer family, to avenge her mothers death and rejection from the lifestyle Grace felt she was entitled to.

One by one, she picks off the Mortimers in various ways that are akin to their hobbies and lifestyle, to make the murders look like accidents.

MY GOD. This book took me nearly 3 months to finish. It started off with promise and when I read the blurb I thought this might have been a really good book to delve into. However, there are 365 pages within this book, and I feel like half of that could’ve been wiped out due to unnecessary ramblings and the protagonist going off on a tangent every five minutes. As a result this book was far longer than it needed to be, and I found myself getting frustrated with it.

The main character is very unlikable and despises anyone she thinks is beneath her which turn out to be everyone.

The timeframe within this book was a little confusing as well as it went from present day to past day, and then to another point in Grace’s life, in the past pre-murder. This made it very confusing to keep up with where we were were, and the timelines etc.

This book could’ve been so good, but the writing was just not my style. ]]>

<![CDATA[Finders Keepers (Bill Hodges Trilogy, #2)]]> 23492589 Wake up, genius.

The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn’t published a book for decades. Morris Bellamy is livid, not just because Rothstein has stopped providing books, but because the nonconformist Jimmy Gold has sold out for a career in advertising. Morris kills Rothstein and empties his safe of cash, yes, but the real treasure is a trove of notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel.

Morris hides the money and the notebooks, and then he is locked away for another crime. Decades later, a boy named Pete Saubers finds the treasure, and now it is Pete and his family that Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson must rescue from the ever-more deranged and vengeful Morris when he’s released from prison after thirty-five years.

Not since Misery has King played with the notion of a reader whose obsession with a writer gets dangerous. Finders Keepers is spectacular, heart-pounding suspense, but it is also King writing about how literature shapes a life—for good, for bad, forever.]]>

He has a wife and three kids who I get the impression he doesn’t seem to like very much. He is stuck in a dead end job with a miserable boss (aren’t we all?) and lives in a dilapidated part of town unable to afford to move anywhere nicer.

During the course of the next week or so, more and more reports emerge of random and violent attacks, where people are killing one another. There is no pattern for these killings, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s a stranger or someone you love; it could happen to anyone. Eventually it happens to our protagonist and we follow his perspective as a “Hater.

When I read the reviews for this book, I didn’t hold out much hope, however, I was pleasantly surprised. I love apocalyptic novels anyway, particularly ones where we follow every day citizens as they experience the end of the world and so this book fit right into this category.

The pacing was a little slow in places, but it made up for it at the very end, and I found myself flying through the last few chapters, desperate to see how it ended.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes apocalyptic fiction and a bit of an easy read.

Off to go read the sequel now .]]>

Louis and Claudia travel Europe, eventually coming to Paris and the ragingly successful Theatre des Vampires--a theatre of vampires pretending to be mortals pretending to be vampires. Here they meet the magnetic and ethereal Armand, who brings them into a whole society of vampires. But Louis and Claudia find that finding others like themselves provides no easy answers and in fact presents dangers they scarcely imagined.

Originally begun as a short story, the book took off as Anne wrote it, spinning the tragic and triumphant life experiences of a soul. As well as the struggles of its characters, Interview captures the political and social changes of two continents. The novel also introduces Lestat, Anne's most enduring character, a heady mixture of attraction and revulsion. The book, full of lush description, centers on the themes of immortality, change, loss, sexuality, and power.

You can't use explosives. You can't use poison. It has to be up close and personal. You don't have to worry about leaving evidence; that will be taken care no one suicidal. No one over the age of 65. No one with a terminal illness.Choose your method. Choose your victim.Chris Summer was a 21 year old call centre worker and a drop out. A nobody, still living at home with his parents. Then one day the Man in White came to his family's house, offering a seemingly impossible kill a random stranger - one of Chris' choosing - within twelve days in order to save the lives of five kidnapped siblings. Refuse, and they die slowly and painfully. The clock is ticking, the Man in White is watching, and Chris has some very important choices to make. This is a tale of fear, indecision, confused masculinity and brutal violence; a story of a coddled young man thrust into a world of sharp metal and bone.Ask yourself if you could do it. Then ask yourself who you would choose.Praise for Luke Smitherd's "For me there is no greater joy than seeing an artist excel at his craft ...you'll be blown away by the abundance of ideas." - Ain't It Cool News.com]]> 295 Luke Smitherd kt 4 Chris is not allowed to use a gun and his victim cannot have a terminal illness or be suicidal. It has to be a choice that Chris makes. Can he do it, and save the girls?

OKAY let me start off by saying this book had real potential. When I read the blurb I thought this book was right up my street. But unfortunately Chris is a very unlikeable protagonist. His constant whining and deliberations and 'what-ifs' really had me rolling my eyes. He had plenty of opportunities in the book to kill some real scumbags but he doesn't, because he can't go through with it for WHATEVER reason, despite the fact that the clock is running out and the girls are going to die. There is an interesting line in the book about how people say they could kill someone but it's different when you're actually in that position and watching the life drain out of their eyes. That put things into an interesting perspective. However, on more than one occasion Chris was fronted with some real unlikeable and nasty characters but STILL couldn't go through with it.

The person he does choose to kill I didn't see that coming. Do I think it was a bad choice? Yes, but that's only because the potential victims beforehand would have been much better suited. However, Chris' logic behind his chosen victim is actually pretty logical and sane. So it does make sense when you're in the moment.

Overall, this book had good potential. It was fast-paced, well written and the Man in White is creepy as hell. Plus there's a pretty interesting twist at the end which I didn't see coming.

Chris is an ordinary 21 year old who makes the mistake of opening the door one day to find two strangers on his doorstep. The Man in White and his accomplice, who Chris names Klaus, tells Chris that he must kill someone within a certain length of time, or five girls will die painfully and slowly. For each time slot that Chris hasn't killed someone, one of the girls loses a limb which carries on until they remove the head of the girl. Then they move onto the next one.

The Good Lie 56238004 Six teens murdered. A suspect behind bars. A desperate father. In a case this shadowy, the truth is easy to hide.

Psychiatrist Dr. Gwen Moore is an expert on killers. She’s spent a decade treating California’s most depraved predators and unlocking their motives—predators much like the notorious Bloody Heart serial killer, whose latest teenage victim escaped and then identified local high school teacher Randall Thompson as his captor. The case against Thompson as the Bloody Heart Killer is damning—and closed, as far as Gwen and the media are concerned. If not for one new development

Defense attorney Robert Kavin is a still-traumatized father whose own son fell prey to the BH Killer. Convinced of Thompson’s innocence, he steps in to represent him. Now Robert wants Gwen to interview the accused, create a psych profile of the killer and his victims, and help clear his client’s name.

As Gwen and Robert grow closer and she dives deeper into the investigation, grave questions arise. So does Gwen’s suspicion that Robert is hiding something—and that he might not be the only one with a secret.

Six teenagers dead. Finally, the killer behind bars. But are the games just beginning?]]>

There's a reason Misery is so popular. The crazy, deranged Annie Wilkes holding her favourite author captive, like a rat in a trap, forcing him to write her the best story of his life. Paul Sheldon is writing to save his life, faced with horrific consequences if he upsets his diabolical, sadistic captor.

Stephen King is such an expert storyteller; the detail, the suspense, the pacing, everything about this book was perfect. I literally cannot find one single fault, as much as I try.

I enjoyed the description of Annie; those moments when she would 'unplug' were just as terrifying as the moments when she would unleash her fury onto Paul. I found myself flying through this book, waiting for the epic conclusion and wondering how it would end for Paul.

As the reader, I was led to a high stake, fast-paced, climactic ending where I was right there besides Paul as he fought to free himself and finally pay Annie back after the months of torture she had subjected him to. What an ending.

I thought, given everything going on at the minute, this should be a good read. It was interesting to see the mirroring of the panic from the public when a global pandemic takes hold.

For the most part, I enjoyed this. It was interesting and different. There were definitely parts of the book that dragged, such as the parts which consisted of in-depth medical notes filled to the brim with jargon that went straight over my head. I found that very unnecessary as I think a lot of readers would. With zombie apocalypse novels I'm not arsed how it started, the origin of it or how to find a cure. I like to read about the real people and their day to day lives and what it's like on the ground when the apocalypse starts. That's why for me I was frustrated at the snippets which went into great detail about the components of the virus itself and the efforts to find a cure and its compatibility. I don't care, give me the guts and the gore!!

It was interesting to see how the zombies were different than what is usually experienced; they seem to have thought and some of them have basic speech mastered as well. When reading a diary entry and seeing that the writer has developed a hunger after getting scratched and is able to convey this, I thought that was a nice twist.

It was a bit unrealistic however, with the Twitter feeds section how the person was being eaten alive and live-tweeting it...

Overall a decent book. Definitely not the best I've read but worth a read. ]]>

GOD DAMN this was a good book. I was hooked from page 1. I like multiple narrative novels and in addition to that, Alex Lake also took us back to the timeline Maggie was first kidnapped, what happened to her all those years ago and how it impacted her family.

I literally sped through the last 100 pages or so as the pace picked up and wasn't disappointed.

If I have one point to make I would have liked a little more closure, i.e. [spoilers removed] but to be honest that wasn't a big drawback for me at all.

I had fallen out of love with reading admittedly, due to a short attention span and not really being able to find the right book to tickle my pickle but this was a bloody good read and I am pleased to say it's my first read novel of 2020! ]]>

N.B: This book took me a long time to read but it was nothing to do with the book itself, just my lack of interest in reading in general.

I did enjoy this but I wouldn't say it's my favourite as it's not the type of genre I usually read. I'm not into murder mysteries but the storyline and the characters were interesting enough that I persevered. However, I did find some of the characters absolutely infuriating, particularly Sarah Donovan. She does improve towards the end of the book and I'm sure her annoying traits are only because as the reader I could see plainly what had happened, where she either couldn't or could but didn't want to believe it.

Overall, this was a good read and I'd recommend to others who are fans of the murder mystery genre. ]]>

Rose and Bel Enright are twins who have enrolled at the prestigious Odell Academy. Rose, studious and eager to follow rules is unlike her unruly sister who often finds herself in trouble. Despite their differences and the trouble they cause for one another, they find each other their pillar of support during hard times, such as the passing of their mother and the prospect of joining a new school. However, Odell Academy tests their sibling bond and soon Rose and Bel find themselves getting into vicious fights with one another and causing trouble that boils over and ends in murder, where one twin is found as a key suspect.

N.B: This book took me a long time to read but it was nothing to do with the book itself, just my lack of interest in reading in general.

I did enjoy this but I wouldn't say it's my favourite as it's not the type of genre I usually read. Angela McCabe and Josh Norbury: murdered.

A killer the police have dubbed Billy Dead Mates is killing pairs of best friends, one by one. Just before each murder, he sends his victim a small white book...

Three regional police forces are working together to identify and catch Billy. For five months, they've been failing. Then a fifth victim, scared by what she's seen and heard on the news, comes forward to seek help. Unlike Billy's first four victims, she isn't dead. Yet.

Stand-up comedian Kim Tribbeck has one of Billy's peculiar white books. A stranger gave it to her after a gig she did a year ago. Was he Billy? Now Kim's life depends on working out why she - a woman who has no close friends because she trusts no one - should attract the attention of the Best Friends Killer... And, if Billy has her in his sights, why has he waited so long to strike?

The story opens up with Kim Tribbeck, famous comedienne, waiting in a hospital room for an update on her grandmother who has terminal cancer and is in the final stages of her life.

We are then brought separately to an ongoing police investigation on the recent bout of murders carried out by a serial killer the police have nicknamed 'Billy Dead Mates' (due to the nature of his/her murders). Immediately we are introduced to about six or seven different policemen/women/investigators. Call me simple but for me this was too much too soon. Due to the author sometimes addressing the police as their first names, surnames and nicknames I found myself getting confused as to who was who.

I found myself disliking Kim for the good first half or so of the book. I didn't actually like a lot of the characters and particularly disliked Sondra Halliday who every time she opened her mouth was adding to my list of reasons to abandon the book without ever finishing it. Due to this I didn't really care what happened to any of them. Kim could have been murdered and I don't think I would have batted an eyelid, though to be fair I did start to warm up to her about halfway through.

This book did have some redeeming qualities. I thought the pacing was good and some of the clues made me say 'Oh' out loud a couple of times in surprise. The writing isn't terrible and the plot is easy to keep up with (though the ending got a bit muddy for me particularly the killer's M.O). Mostly though this book was a big chore for me (hence why it took me a month to read). I have no interest in reading any of the other instalments but at the same time I don't regret reading this book at all.

<![CDATA[New Fears: New Horror Stories by Masters of the Genre]]> 35910449
The horror genre’s greatest living practitioners drag our darkest fears kicking and screaming into the light in this collection of nineteen brand-new stories. In The Boggle Hole by Alison Littlewood an ancient folk tale leads to irrevocable loss. In Josh Malerman’s The House of the Head a dollhouse becomes the focus for an incident both violent and inexplicable. And in Speaking Still Ramsey Campbell suggests that beyond death there may be far worse things waiting than we can ever imagine... Numinous, surreal and gut wrenching, New Fears is a vibrant collection showcasing the very best fiction modern horror has to offer.]]>

The Boggle Hole
A young boy spends time with his grandfather and gets to hear about 'The Boggle Hole'. I enjoyed this one, it was a good way to kick start the book. It was creepy and left me wanting more. 7/10

Shepherd's Business
Another fantastic story. Told from the point of view of a doctor in 1947, sent to work and live on a small island. Initially sceptical of him, the locals each have their own story. A deliciously dark ending to the story that I did not see coming. 8/10

No Good Deed
A young woman finds herself enacting revenge on a former lover. I enjoyed this one, probably not as much as the others, but I do feel inclined to go and read the prequel to it. 6/10

The Family Car
What used to be her family's vehicle follows a young woman around shortly after the death of her family. Enjoyable and sad story, nice twist at the end. 6/10

Four Abstracts
Not going to lie to you, I had no idea what was going on in this one and didn't really rate it much. 3/10

Sheltered in Place
Told from the point of view of a man stuck in the aftermath of a terrorist attack. Brilliant story. Very short but a massive twist at the end that I loved. Left me wanting more. 9/10

The Fold in the Heart
A storm batters a local town and our three characters have to find shelter whilst escaping horrors of the past. This was enjoyable enough but it wasn't my favourite. 6/10

Departures
A young woman wakes up to find herself in a bar with moody inhabitants. I liked this one quite a bit. It was dark but had a bittersweet ending. 7/10

The Salter Collection
I started off really enjoying this story but I quickly lost interest and didn't really understand the ending too much. 4/10

Speaking Still
A man, having recently lost his wife, confides in his friend about hearing her voice. A poignant story of loss with a dark twist and a cliffhanger ending. 8/10

The Eyes Are White and Quiet
We're never really told what has gone on in this story but our main character, a young blind woman, is not all as she seems. This was one of the better stories within the book; I'd definitely go out and read the novel if there was ever one written. I found myself wanting to know more though. 6/10

The Embarrassment of Dead Grandmothers
Dark humour encapsulates this very short story. I didn't know whether to laugh or be shocked at the actions of our main character but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. 9/10

Eumenides (The Benevolent Ladies)
Our main character, what I assume is a middle-aged man, becomes almost obsessed with his female colleague. Once he plucks up the courage to ask her out, he comes to wish he hadn't. This could have been so good if I hadn't ended it with 'What the f*ck just happened?'. Another example of me apparently being too stupid to understand what had gone on. 5/10

Roundabout
A mystery creature inhabits the local roundabout in town and one man takes it upon himself to rid them of this creature once and for all. Wonderfully dark and tense, I definitely wanted to read more. 9/10

The House of the Head
A young girl is gifted a dollhouse that seems to have a mind of its own. I was really excited to read this one, having LOVED Josh Malerman's Bird Box and I was not disappointed. This had me hooked from start to finish. Creepy, spectacular and atmospheric I would rate this one the highest. 10/10

Succulents
Our main character, a middle aged English man on holiday with his wife and son, finds himself in the midst of a hellish nightmare. This was a really good story, I didn't see the ending coming at all. 9/10

Dollies
Told from the point of view of a woman who is reminiscing on her childhood, we are introduced to a traumatic life with horrific events that seems to mould her into someone you end up feeling quite shocked at her actions. This starts off relatively innocent enough but has a magnificently dark ending that I did not see coming. 8/10

The Abduction Door
A man was told as a young boy the story of how a small door in elevators, known as 'The Abduction Door' is home to a mystery creature that snatches people, mainly children, and takes them forever. Now grown up, he finds himself victim to it. What a c r e e p y story this was. I really rooted for the main character. A sad twist at the end left me wanting more. 8/10

The Swan Dive
Our main character, a something-aged male, intent to end his life is instead taken on a hellish nightmare that reaches a dramatic conclusion. This was my second favourite of the whole book. Graphic and brutal, I really enjoyed the concept of this one. 9/10

The killers' pursuit of horror and violence is described through the unique audiotape and videotape interviews which Berry-Dee conducted, deep inside the bowels of some of the world's toughest prisons.

Christopher Berry-Dee has collated these interviews into this astounding, disturbing book, which, since its first publication, has gone on to become a True Crime classic. Not only does he describe his meetings with some of the world's most evil men and women, he also reproduces, verbatim, their very words as they describe their crimes, allowing the reader a glimpse into the inner workings of the people who have committed the worst crime possible- to mercilessly take the life of another human being.]]>

Clayton 'Clay' Riddell, an artist, soon teams up with a handful of survivors and begins his journey across the country, all the while fighting telepathic shells of former human beings, fighting to stay alive in a battle against time.

This book took me two long months to read. Don't get me wrong, I'm a massive fan of Stephen King and am hesitant to say he can do wrong but my god this book was a struggle. It started off really well, fast-paced and action-packed. However, this soon fell away and the pacing slowed down dramatically. I'll be honest, I had absolutely no idea what was going on half the time either.

I thought the theory that the pulse virus was acting like a computer virus, wiping the 'hard drives' of its victims was an interesting concept. However, it became a little bit far-fetched as the book went on. I believe that if you're going to create a world where these things can happen, there needs to be some semblance of plausibility in there.

I would probably give this book 1.5 stars if I could. Definitely not Stephen King's best work unfortunately. ]]>

I enjoyed this book a lot, despite how darn long it took me to get through. I will say we’re introduced to a sh*t ton of characters, so it gets a little hard to keep up with who’s who and the significance they have within the story. However, each character we’re introduced to has an in-depth background and a personality as different to the character that follows.

I love Stephen King books and so was excited to read his latest addition, written with his son, and I have to say this was certainly no exception.

<![CDATA[Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine]]> 31434883 No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: she struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding unnecessary human contact, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen, the three rescue one another from the lives of isolation that they had been living. Ultimately, it is Raymond’s big heart that will help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one. If she does, she'll learn that she, too, is capable of finding friendship—and even love—after all.

Smart, warm, uplifting, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .

the only way to survive is to open your heart.]]>

The Krays: The Prison Years 34445162
Until they weren’t.

After an undercover operation, the Kray twins were found guilty of murder and were sentenced to life in prison. They were just 35 years old.

But once inside, the twins were determined to make their stay truly historic. The Twins began earning more money inside than they ever did on the streets. They sold branded t-shirts and memorabilia and they allowed books and films to be published about their lives. They didn't stop.

Whilst locked up, their mother died as did their brother Charlie, and their associates and friends all fell away. But while Britain changed as a nation, the brothers continued to operate as the gangsters they once were. Their violence ingrained so deep that they couldn’t leave it behind.

The The Prison Years explores the fascinating and largely untold story of the Kray twins following their imprisonment.]]>

<![CDATA[Highway to Hell (Can You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse?)]]> 21412278 Can You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse?, which the Florida-Times Union hailed, “may just be the best thing to happen to literary zombies since Max Brooksâ€â€”for fans of the blockbuster phenomenon The Walking Dead.

You’ve probably read your fair share of zombie stories. But this time it’s different. In a horrific and hilarious cross-country road trip (or rather, suicide mission), you must overcome obstacles of every kind to save zombified America from utter collapse.

You're inside your prison cell, waiting to be released. Your name is Jimmy El Camino, and you’re a badass—in fact, you’re a supreme badass. Rambo with style. Snake Plissken with a failing liver. You’ve killed more men than cancer. But more men than the zombie apocalypse? That’s questionable.

Your mission? Drive your heavily armed 1967 El Camino from New York City to San Francisco in order to save the world. Along the way, you’ll encounter Ring’s Most Wonderful Circus Show; you’ll battle zombies gladiator-style; you’ll be forced to deal with lunatics. And every step of the way, an army of drivers in armored vehicles is hot on your tail—because there is one man, the mayor of New York, who will stop at nothing to keep this apocalypse of the undead alive.]]>

The Sacrifice (The Enemy #4) 18453187 The Sacrifice picks up after Small Sam and The Kid arrive at the Tower of London at the end of The Dead. Though Sam finds safety and friendship at the Tower with Jordan Hordern's crew, he can't settle down. The only thing he wants is to be reunited with his sister, Ella. Despite Ed's protests, Sam and the Kid strike out westward, through the no-go zone.

Meanwhile, Shadowman is tracking Saint George across north London, watching him build up his army. Shadowman knows that Saint George is an extremely dangerous threat, but no one will take his warnings seriously.

Some answers to the questions we've been wondering about--What is the Disease? Where did it come from? Is there a cure?--are addressed by an unexpected source: a diseased adult nicknamed Wormwood who has the ability to speak, though his ravings are difficult to decipher.

Unspeakable horror, edge-of-the-seat suspense, and stomach-churning plot twists continue in Book 4 of Charlie Higson's masterful Enemy saga.]]>

I love reading about the character development the kids are going through, particularly Ed and I enjoy reading about each character's strengths and how effective they can be when working together as a group. Fortunately Small Sam, Ed, Kyle and The Kid made it through to the end of this book pretty much unscathed.

Small Sam and The Kid made it through London to the Tower pretty much in one piece. Upon their arrival the rest of the kids are surprised to see that they made it this far and comments are whispered throughout the group on their striking resemblance to Mad Matt's ramblings of The Lamb and The Goat. Does this make them special or are they just normal kids looking to survive in a world gone mad? Ed, a respected member of the Tower group, believes that they are just normal kids and takes it upon himself to look after them. Therefore when Sam and The Kid leave the Tower in search of Sam's sister, Ed gathers a group of his best hunters and sets off to find them.

Okay I'm all done with the formalities, now time for my opinion.

I didn't hate this book but I can't rave about it either. For me, James Dashner doesn't leave anything to the imagination of the reader; he has to explain each emotion and action of the characters intentions and this is unnecessary. There were a few plot holes too. Plus what is it with Thomas falling asleep at the end of pretty much every chapter? He's also put into a situation where it's literally a matter of life and death for him and he still pontificates over his feelings for two girls. One, he is absolutely obsessed over (why?!) and the other he meets along the way but doesn't quite know whether he likes her or not (because god forbid he is friendly to another girl who isn't Teresa).
I could moan and moan for days on end about the actions of Thomas because let's face it; he's a bit of a wet sap. He definitely isn't my favourite protagonist but thankfully we are introduced to a number of other characters throughout.

Let's talk about Jorge, shall we? He has promising features; he is a strong leader, a good fighter and has a group of people who will fight for him. However, after he joins Thomas' group that's pretty much all we hear from him. There's a point towards the end of the story where we don't even know if he's still around or not because Thomas doesn't reference him for a couple of pages. Jorge has the potential to shine through but James Dashner doesn't seem to care too much about him in this book.

The end of the book left me highly confused. What was the point of [spoilers removed]. It just felt like James Dashner was writing action in for the sake of it, without it even making sense.

HOWEVER, despite all of the above, I will go on to read the rest of the series. I want to see how Newt, Minho, Brenda, Jorge and Frypan turn out. ]]>

After escaping from the Maze, Thomas and the surviving Gladers believed they were finally safe. What they didn't anticipate was that WICKED had more trials planned for them which would dwindle their already reduced numbers even further, weeding out the weak and selecting the strongest and the best from the group. With so many variables in place, with killer weather and murderous Cranks, can they survive this next trial? Will they ever be safe?

The book begins in Peru where a tourist party are hiking through the jungle. We are briefly introduced to the characters before [spoilers removed]. From there on we are introduced to several different characters in different parts of the world and we are shown how they react to the news that murderous spiders are invading their homes and towns.

This was a very good book and I read it fairly quickly. One downside for me personally was the fact we were introduced to a new character every chapter. At the start of the book, this got hard to keep pace with and remember who everyone was and what their role in the book was. However I will admit, I did like how we saw them all again at the end of the story and we found out how they had coped with this threat.

I enjoyed reading about most of the characters and I did enjoy hearing their backstories. There were times when the action was unfolding and then the author would go off on a tangent which was a little frustrating.

Overall though this was a fantastic book and I have just ordered the sequel from eBay!]]>

War and Peace 656
War and Peace broadly focuses on Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812 and follows three of the most well-known characters in literature: Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a count who is fighting for his inheritance and yearning for spiritual fulfillment; Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who leaves his family behind to fight in the war against Napoleon; and Natasha Rostov, the beautiful young daughter of a nobleman who intrigues both men.

As Napoleon’s army invades, Tolstoy brilliantly follows characters from diverse backgrounds—peasants and nobility, civilians and soldiers—as they struggle with the problems unique to their era, their history, and their culture. And as the novel progresses, these characters transcend their specificity, becoming some of the most moving—and human—figures in world literature.

Tolstoy gave his personal approval to this translation, published here in a new single volume edition, which includes an introduction by Henry Gifford, and Tolstoy's important essay `Some Words about War and Peace'.]]>

Hoping to encourage her son’s artistic interests, Connie has planned a month-long tour of European capitals, a chance to experience the world’s greatest works of art as a family, and she can’t bring herself to cancel. And maybe going ahead with the original plan is for the best anyway. Douglas is privately convinced that this landmark trip will rekindle the romance in the marriage and might even help him bond with Albie.

What follows next is quite literally a series of unfortunate events and soon Doug needs to make a choice based on how much he wants his family to stay together.

This was a good book. Despite me taking a month to read this I did enjoy it when I got into it but there were so many filler gaps and flashbacks that it took me a while to get into it after I put it down. The characters are interesting and diverse and I liked seeing the way Doug influenced Connie and vice versa.

However I did feel it was very drawn out for its content. The jumping back and forth from past to present was a little jarring but it made sense why the author did this as it directly related to something Doug was currently experiencing and how he'd handle the situation.

I felt like I learned quite a bit or certainly places to visit if I ever travelled Europe so maybe I am marginally smarter for having read this.

This was a very good read and I largely enjoyed it. I'm a massive fan of apocalyptic novels and I think my favourites are those that take us to the start of any big event so that we can experience the main characters in their normal everyday setting and then see how they cope when plunged into a terrifying new world. This is exactly what The Silence did.

The characters were believable and relatable and showed some good development throughout the story. Huw clearly dotes on his daughter which he referenced to at several points (I must admit after hearing for the fifth time how much he loved and adored his daughter I had to fight back the urge to roll my eyes and groan out loud; don't get me wrong, father/daughter love is special but also pukeworthy if overdone). The family are a tight-knit unit so it was good to see them coming together and helping one another survive.

The only aspects I wasn't a fan of was the pacing. At times it felt a little slow and awkward; they spent a good majority of the book doing nothing except sitting and pontificating on memories past or the natures of the beasts. It also felt like they hadn't really achieved much and the story kind of ended without tying anything up but perhaps that means there could be a sequel on the horizon?

Overall it was a good read and I was impressed.]]>

Then a figure from Will’s past appears and hijacks all her plans, propelling her into a very different future. . . .

For Lou Clark, life after Will Traynor means learning to fall in love again, with all the risks that brings. But here Jojo Moyes gives us two families, as real as our own, whose joys and sorrows will touch you deeply, and where both changes and surprises await.]]>

The story opens with Louisa, 18 months on from Will's death, stuck in rut; in a dead-end job, a flat that doesn't feel like home and a never-ending grief. She's also on bad terms with her family (due to the fact they blame her for the final events of the first book). So basically, she's not in a good place. One evening, after too much wine, Louisa Clark has an accident that sets in motion the events for the rest of the book.

To me, I didn't feel a strong connection to any of the characters. Louisa was a bit of a pain in this book and I found myself disliking her quite a bit. Lily was absolutely insufferable and it was hard to feel any sympathy for her, even after we are giving an insight into her life through her own point of view. Sam, Louisa's new love interest, was a semi-decent character but like many other readers (judging by other reviews) I didn't feel a strong chemistry between the two and it just seemed like JoJo Moyes had written Sam into the story to show Louisa attempting to move on with her life.

There were some quite heart-warming parts though I'll admit; the ending was nice and seemed to tie up any loose ends and the Moving On group had a nice contribution to the story. It was interesting to get a glimpse into other character's griefs.

The sequel definitely was no where near as good as the first book and if anything made me dislike Louisa a little more but in a strange way it was also nice to see her moving on with her life. ]]>

We've all heard the saying 'If it isn't broken, don't fix it'. The same can be said for sequels of books. Does the first book warrant a sequel or is it something to write to pass the time? To me after reading After You, it's clear that Me Before You didn't call for a sequel. Sure, it's relatively nice to see Louisa Clark moving on with her life but the whole book felt like a massive filler.

It took me a lot longer than usual to finish this book but this is nothing to do with the story itself. I feel a bit depressed though due to some of the character's death; I need to stop being surprised and stop getting attached to characters and then maybe I won't be so surprised and heartbroken when Charlie Higson kills them off!!

This was an interesting addition to the series as it filled in from the first and second book from different P.O.Vs. For instance at the end [spoilers removed].

I must say I have been interested to see what's happened to the survivors from the first book but I did like the characters introduced in The Fear. Courtney and DogNut were my favourite characters [spoilers removed]. This book felt a lot darker than the previous installations as well as I think it focused more on the dark side of the kids in addition to the brutality of the sickos. We find ourselves learning more about how a world like this affects the kids and their development into hardened survivalists.

I was very impressed with the way that Shadowman handled himself throughout the story and much like Small Sam in Book 1, found myself rooting for his survival.

Good book overall and I'm intrigued to see how it'll all come together.]]>

On the one hand the writing is captivating and descriptive. On the other hand the main character is very hard to like. After reading other reviews I understand that as she suffers from depression she is "supposed" to be a little self-centred and cynical of those around her. I think I didn't like her much before her descent though.

I'm not sure if I am being thick but there were times that I had no clue what was happening. The scenes seemed to change so jarringly with little or no reference to how it had passed. Perhaps this is an accurate reflection of Esther's mind though.

I'm glad I read this book but I can't find myself rating it overly highly.]]>

In Room 217 of the Lakes Region Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic, something has awakened. Something evil. Brady Hartsfield, perpetrator of the Mercedes Massacre, where eight people were killed and many more were badly injured, has been in the clinic for five years, in a vegetative state. According to his doctors, anything approaching a complete recovery is unlikely. But behind the drool and stare, Brady is awake, and in possession of deadly new powers that allow him to wreak unimaginable havoc without ever leaving his hospital room.

Retired police detective Bill Hodges, the unlikely hero of Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers, now runs an investigation agency with his partner, Holly Gibney—the woman who delivered the blow to Hartsfield’s head that put him on the brain injury ward. When Bill and Holly are called to a suicide scene with ties to the Mercedes Massacre, they find themselves pulled into their most dangerous case yet, one that will put their lives at risk, as well as those of Bill’s heroic young friend Jerome Robinson and his teenage sister, Barbara. Brady Hartsfield is back, and planning revenge not just on Hodges and his friends, but on an entire city.

In End of Watch, Stephen King brings the Hodges trilogy to a sublimely terrifying conclusion, combining the detective fiction of Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers with the heart-pounding, supernatural suspense that has been his bestselling trademark. The result is an unnerving look at human vulnerability and chilling suspense. No one does it better than King.]]>

Set a year before the events in The Enemy, we are introduced to the characters we get a glimpse of at the end of the first book. I found this really refreshing and loved how it all came together at the end. I think because I got so attached to the characters in The Enemy it took me a while to warm up to the characters in The Dead. However, one thing I mentioned in my review of the first book is that all the kids had different personalities and this remains consistent throughout the series so far. I found myself warming up to certain characters and wishing others would get killed off pretty soon.

Speaking of, Charlie Higson really does not hold back in killing his main characters off. [spoilers removed] He also does not hold back on the gore, damn. Some of the character deaths had me cringing and wincing.

The characters we are introduced to at the start, whilst they play vital roles, they are not the sole main characters. As the story unfolds you meet more and more kids.

I am normally against having too many characters involved but each one had their own unique personality and something interesting to bring to the group. Charlie Higson does not bat an eyelid at killing his characters off in gruesome ways which I found really refreshing. Normally when a character is given a main role you end up thinking that they're safe but this is not the case for The Enemy. [spoilers removed]

My favourite characters were probably Achilleus and Blue with Maxie, Small Sam, The Kid, Whitney and Ollie close behind. I found myself rooting for Small Sam all throughout the book and willed him onwards particularly during the underground scene which gave me chills.

ÌýSuddenly he finds himself facing a gruelling journey on foot across a devastated United Kingdom. Accompanied by a group of misfits that include a large, hairy tattoo artist and an old man who claims to have run around Australia, Edgar must race against time and overcome his own short-comings, not to mention 100 mile canyons and a very strange council estate, to find the people he loves before he loses them forever.

A vivid, gripping story of hope, long-distance running and how we break the limits of our own endurance.]]>

This all changes however when out of nowhere something falling from the sky causes a series of massive earthquakes, raging fires and giant tsunamis. Soon, Ed finds him and his family taking safe refuge in the nearby barracks where every week or so him and a few others head into the ruins of the city to find supplies. When he returns after one trip however, he finds out his family have been taken to the other side of the country where they will be setting sail in just a few weeks.

So he runs.

Really not sure what to make of this book. I don't even know if what I have written above is accurate because I didn't pay too much attention to the details. You're introduced to five main characters; Ed, Bryce, Richard, Harvey and Grimes (or Laura). I can say I didn't care too much for the fate of the majority of these characters. My favourite was probably Harvey but unfortunately he wasn't the protagonist. [spoilers removed]

There were a lot of times when I found myself confused as to what was happening. I'm not sure if it was the descriptions that were given or that I found my mind wandering when it should have been taking in what was going on.

Don't get me wrong, there were some really great scenes and you are introduced to some decent characters. Largely though I found this book to be a bit of a drag, hence why it took me a month and a half to finish.

Truly Madly Guilty 26247008
Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there’s anything they can count on, it’s each other.

Clementine and Erika are each other’s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don’t hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid’s larger than life personalities there will be a welcome respite.

Two months later, it won’t stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can’t stop asking themselves the question: What if we hadn’t gone?

In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty takes on the foundations of our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don’t say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm.]]>
