Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Discussion thread for The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. This month's genre is paranormal.

Synopsis
Dorian Gray is the subject of a full-length portrait in oil by Basil Hallward, an artist who is impressed and infatuated by Dorian's beauty; he believes that Dorian's beauty is responsible for the new mode in his art as a painter. Through Basil, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, and he soon is enthralled by the aristocrat's hedonistic worldview: that beauty and sensual fulfilment are the only things worth pursuing in life.

Newly understanding that his beauty will fade, Dorian expresses the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture, rather than he, will age and fade. The wish is granted, and Dorian pursues a libertine life of varied and amoral experiences, while staying young and beautiful; all the while his portrait ages and records every sin.

I don’t have it in me to re read books but I’ve got a pretty good memory.

It’s almost sad to see how Dorian been so young, sad and impressionable leaves his life to be lived under Harry’s misleading doctrine.
I do find that people do make that mistake a lot, they don’t have enough in themselves to find their own goals so they follow others which might be completely wrong and usually the people who preaches them don’t follow them themselves.
I wonder who the author though, had taken Dorian’s soul. It seems pretty finite decision, by no explain who he gave it away he cut it the possibility of him ever having it back.
