Caotico09 | 7 comments The MC of the book is a boy (13-18ish), but the book handles darker material. The book is part of a series. There is a strong theme of good vs evil and light vs darkness.

In particular, the most vivid scene from my memory is the boy and maybe some other characters(?) making a mad dash through the countryside trying to escape (evil). They come upon an old abandoned(?) chapel and lock themselves inside. The windows darken and the door almost breaks down but they are able to ride out the attack until the morning(it being night could be incorrect). But the key being that the chapel itself did something to stop the attack, a normal building wouldn't.

Time Period: 1800s-early 1900s. There may be vehicles... im not sure.
Location: Small Town / Countryside.
MC: Boy 13-18years
Published: Before 2008. I would have read it 2006-2008.

It is not "This Present Darkness", and i do not think it is Horowitz's The Gatekeepers/Power of Five (although i havent read it).

Sue Elleker | 1029 comments "The Dark Is Rising" by Susan Cooper? The boy and his companions are in a large building, with the Dark outside trying to get in. The Dark tries to persuade the boy, Will, to open the door by pretending to be the voice of his mother in trouble.

Im pretty certain it is not it. I used the preview to look at the dog/mother scene on page 47. I only read the back half that was available, but it doesn't seem familiar. I searched the book for 'church'. There is an additional scene on 142 but that has the protagonists at the aggressor, which wasn't it either.
