The poll will go up on or around May 10th.

Carolyn F. Simple Jess (Marrying Stone, #2) by Pamela Morsi , someone told me this is very good.

laurie stith-tenney (peanunt) | 3 comments Black dagger brotherhood by j r ward

message 4: by Wan (new)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 252 comments Born of Silence (The League, #5) by Sherrilyn Kenyon or any books in the series.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Ride the Fire (Blakewell/Kenleigh Family Trilogy, #3) by Pamela Clare

Nicholas Kenleigh is truly a tortured hero. This is part of trilogy but works well as a standalone.

Laurie, what book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood would you like to nominate?

They are all good suggestions for this theme, aren't they?

So you are nominating ALL of them? How about you pick one for your nomination? Think about Tortured Heroes....men who have been through the ringer!

message 10: by PepperP0t (new)

PepperP0t men who have been through the ringer sounds definitely like something in the Dark Hunter Series. Acheron (Dark-Hunter, #15) by Sherrilyn Kenyon or my new favorite Sentinel Wars Finding the Lost (Sentinel Wars, #2) by Shannon K. Butcher

Katya | 327 comments Found this article about Tortured Heroes on the Samhain Publishing.com website:

"But what is the allure of a tortured man? Why do so many romance readers delight in the suffering of the brooding hero? It seems incredibly mean-spirited to enjoy the mental or physical pain of the man the reader is asked to fall in love with. The darker his angst, the better. Why?

First, the hero's pain engages the readers emotions, and romance books are all about emotion. When I meet that hero with the dark wounded soul, my initial reaction is not sadistic delight in his pain, but rather a sympathetic ache, a burning desire to help, to heal, and to ease his suffering. While there is nothing I, the reader, can do for this poor hurting man, I put my faith in the love of the heroine to rescue the hero from his pit of despair.

Secondly, the hero's inner pain also adds another layer of conflict to the story. More conflict usually translates to more emotion for the reader, a bigger stake in the outcome of the romance. Not only must the heroine resolve the external conflict she faces to reach her goal, but in order to find true love, she must help the hero find resolution and peace from his inner demons. This theme of redemption resounds with us because we all have, to some extent, past sins, past pain and lingering heartache from which we want to be freed.

A tortured hero does have an element of danger about him. What dark secret is he hiding? What is at the root of his pain, and will his pain suck the heroine in and ruin her as well? Danger has a titillating allure that stirs our adrenaline.

Plus, brooding men are sexy. How many cologne and underwear ads have you seen where the male model is practically snarling at the camera? Plenty.

The tortured hero takes this serious brooding to an extreme, and when the heroine manages to break through the tortured hero's pain and protective walls to find the charming prince that lies beneath, she claims the best of both worlds. Tough and tender. Macho alpha outside with a gooey marshmallow center. No wonder a romantic's heart flutters for the tortured hero!"

message 15: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia (cecilia250) Some that pop into mind:

Scandal by Carolyn Jewel

Master of Crows by Grace Draven

The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran (suggesting based on reputation, not because I've read it)

Hold by Zannie Adams (pretty hot)

When He Was Wicked (Bridgertons, #6) by Julia Quinn (mostly tortured by unrequited love rather than a dangerous life, but *swoon*)

I so want to read Master of Crows...I've heard tons about it!

message 17: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Mikalis (joannamikalis) | 13 comments Acheron is the ultimate tortured hero... Would everyone have to be caught up on the series to appreciate this one? I can't decide.

message 18: by Jill (new)

Jill So what about... The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (Highland Pleasures, #1) by Jennifer Ashley or Archangel's Blade (Guild Hunter, #4) by Nalini Singh or To Tame A Highland Warrior (Highlander #2) by Karen Marie Moning McClairen's Isle The Passionate One (McClairen's Isle, #1) by Connie Brockway or McClairen's Isle The Reckless One (McClairen's Isle, #2) by Connie Brockway .... hmmm I am sure there are many more I could think of but here is a few.

Jill I voted but i can't seem to see how the poll is going and then I will go in again and its like I have never voted and I have to do it again. I have to second Pats comment about the gr torture, is this a glitch? Has anyone successfully voted. I will just add my vote here in case it hasn't come through. I want the Jennifer Ashley book.
