An interesting narrative of how LGBTQ+ individuals overcame social and economic challenges in the 1950s. The shift between present and past to support an argument in the present was well done, though it gets a bit predictable as the novel progresses. The ending leans into a speculative take on how the mentor he admired might have spent his final weeks before taking his own life—basically, he overthought his late mentor’s final moments on earth.

A more shallow take would be: All that build-up just to suck a guy in the hospital.
