After a banger opening, this fantasy slows to a crawl and in my opinion never emerges from it. There's a lot of worldbuilding, but so little of it feels visceral: I never got a sense of the setting, the sights and smells of the world Kissen, Inara, and Elo are traversing, and I never felt much of the emotional or political stakes either. The climax is very "curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" to a degree that almost made me laugh (there's an evil speech!). Kaner is shuffling around some interesting ideas, but they're mired in too much muck for me to feel invested. ]]>

How to Run with the Wolves by Eli Easton
"*3.5 stars*

I love the Howl at the Moon series by one of my favorite authors, Eli Easton, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on How to Run with the Wolves. In the end, I really enjoyed it, even though I didn't love this story quite as much as my fellow reviewers.

This series just makes me smile. If you like the infectious love of a dog, then you will connect with this series. How to Run with the Wolves is as adorable as the rest of them, even if it didn't grab me as much as my favorites in the series (How to Walk like a Man and How to Wish Upon a Star).

I enjoyed how Zeus was different from many of the quickened we've met. He's more introverted, more of a loner, and I liked that about him. I also liked the concept of Timo and his extremely isolated pack, and found those aspects of the story to be really interesting. I was pretty interested in Timo's pack health issues, from a medical standpoint, so that was cool for me.

Where I struggled was with the romance. I kept checking how far along in the book I was, waiting for the romance to really begin. For me, it took a really long time to get any feelings out of Zeus and Timo (especially Timo), and I thought it felt a bit rushed by the end. I actually was more interested in the dynamics and details of Timo's pack than the romance itself. There was a lot going on, plot-wise, and I think it detracted from the romance.

I still enjoyed this story all the way through, but, if I'm being honest with myself, I left the story wanting more. I really loved visiting with my favorite couples from previous books and reading about the happy, loving quickened, so just being "there" made my day. Even if this particular story doesn't do it for you, you will be so happy to be back in the Howl at the Moon world that you'll still feel that squishy-glee inside.

This series is so silly, but in a sincere, committed way that's hard not to appreciate, even while you're cringing every time a character says "oh Dog." This installment was far from my favorite -- the pacing seemed off, with almost all the emotional development coming at the very end -- but I did enjoy the world expansion, and I liked Timo as a sort of impishly manipulative Vampire Armand (book version) figure. ]]>

Historical murder mystery set in World War II Hollywood. This is well-written and researched, and Annie is a likeable protagonist. I also liked how casually, effortlessly queer this is: Annie was in a relationship with a married couple, who dumped her for a chance at stardom, which is not a piece of backstory one often encounters! However, the mystery itself is predictable -- I figured out who the murderer was almost as soon as they were introduced, and I'm not the type of mystery reader who actively tries to solve anything. Still, this was pleasant pool/plane company. ]]>

Romantasy that's both refreshing and not: Lemming takes a humorous, not-too-serious tone, and her protagonist, Cin, is mostly a delight. But as for the monster boyfriend, I found him decidedly unfuckable. Lots of possessive alpha male bullshit, mating bond, blah blah blah... This was a perfectly fine thing to try, especially in the context of reading it by a pool on vacation, but it wasn't for me and I won't be continuing. ]]>

Another adventure in the lives of Rickey and G-Man: chefs, lovers, and constant in-shenanigans-getters. This one is more mystery-focused than the previous, but no less delightful: absolute comfort food. ]]>
