This book was not bad, but it was exactly what I needed: a fast paced, quick mystery

The plot
Overall I liked the idea but the execution was not that good. It was very quick and a little forced. There were several things that didn't make that much sense and felt artificial. The concept was really good but it was rushed. Things were moving too quickly and the end was too sudden, I had to read it twice to figure out that hey, this is the killer

The characters
Ariel/Olivia was pretty badass and I liked her overall attitude. She was a cool character that made the whole book likeable. She was pretty well constructed for such a short book.

Don't get me started on Duncan. He was not it. He was so bland and tiring to read about I'm glad the plot didn't really focus on him

The Setting
Average contemporary mystery setting. Not much to elaborate. I liked how I managed to really get inside the book and imagine everything properly.

Overall
This book was a 3/5 read for me as it was not really that good but it felt really appropriate for what I needed at the time. Everything was just good. Not more, not less. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick, fun read ]]>

Everything about this book was absolutely amazing. From the plot to the characters to the macabre atmosphere, but not macabre enough for it to be too bad

The plot
So so so well structured. I absolutely loved the entire plot and everything came together so nicely. The mystery was so well constructed. It kept me on edge throughout the book and I was genuinely captivated. The external conflict, the entire side plot with Elizabeth Baine, fit so well within the rest of the story.

The whole "hunted mansion" concept was so well executed. I genuinely thought there was something entirely wrong with this house. It was creepy, it was scary, it was also cozy enough for me to enjoy every second of this book.

I liked how the backstories of the house, from different perspectives, and of the families were written like micro-stories themselves. It was easy to follow and understand the author's train of thought

The characters
Absolutely amazing. They were well-built, not flat, and very likable. I enjoyed every single line and felt like I befriended them as the story went on.

Opal was such an awesome main character. She was so strong and determined it was a pleasure to read about her thoughts and experiences. I liked how the author made her funny and sarcastic, I feel like that truly added to her character. She was really likeable and easy to empathize with. The author really managed to write a traumatized character without making her trauma her entire personality and actually represented PTSD in a nice, veridic way.

Arthur was so cute I absolutely loved him. He was such a strong character despite of his savior complex and ridiculous sense of responsability. He is determined and brave and at the end just a fool in love but all in all he's a caring person who puts himself last just so everyone will be okay. I usually dislike such characters but I really liked him

Jasper is my baby. The little sarcastic, ambitious and stubborn teen with a lot to gain and nothing to lose. I loved him so much, from beginning to start. I loved how he went protective over his sister despite not being on good terms at the time and how he fought for what he wanted. Truly an amazing character

The Setting
Absolutely gorgeous. The gothic vibe caught me off guard, as did the dark-academia vibes and the whole ghost-town setting. I loved how it all went together and composed a creepy and soft atmosphere, a universe longing to be read about. I felt like I was there with the characters and there's nothing I love more in a book

Overall
This book was an easy 5/5 for me. I liked everything about it and truly think there's nothing else that could be added or should be removed. It made me enter a spooky universe without being too spooked out. The horror part is mild in such way both horror fans and non-horror fans would enjoy it. All in all I recommend this book to everyone who needs a light read who still hits hard in your hearts and to everyone who wishfully thinks about home ]]>
