If you had asked me during the first 2/3 of this book I would have told you, “don’t bother. There is not one character I care about�! But the last third of the book got very interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it, with the exception of the chapter about the bazaar for the relief of American Negro Soldiers� orphans. That was a bit strange and very much out of character with the rest of the story, although it did allow us a welcome glimpse of Lady Glencora Palliser�
Interesting point that both in Orley Farm and in Miss MacKenzie the action hinges on a trial twenty years before when a serious matter of justice was not decided appropriately, leading to later litigation. And
Was this based on something in Trollope’s own life??
As usual the mental gymnastics of lovers in difficult situations were written with sympathy and realism. Although there is nothing very wrong with this book it just did not soothe or comfort me or even particularly engage my interest as most of his books do. There were lots of bits of good advice about how to talk to friends, what our obligations are to each other, and the usual urging to be kind and tolerant and to forgive one another, but no spark and no particularly interesting characters. Of all the Trollopes I have read this is the least satisfying. Not only is there a minimal plot with predictable conclusions but the writing is not engaging. None of the characters are particularly appealing. The moral arguments and class bound situation are banal. At 200 pages it was a long short story.
