"Staley has a substantial ego (which he probably would be the first to acknowledge), but he’s still capable of being thoughtfully self-critical, looking back at his decades of AIDS activism with both rightful pride and rueful acknowledgment of where he might have fallen short, and seems to take great pains to acknowledge his collaborators (who didn’t always get the spotlight he did). His analytical inside perspective on strategy is fascinating, and oddly enough, his brisk, rational tone gives the chapter on survivor’s guilt surprising power and poignance.
