Carrie Soto Is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid
" update: no so i actually overrated this so bad because i liked atmosphere better but gave that a 3.5/3.75 so ... there’s just no way in any world that this is a 4.75. so yeah don’t mind me re-rating (leaving my original review bc i’m lazy xo)

╰┈ 4.75 stars

one of the great injustices of this rigged world we live in is that women are considered to be depleting with age and men are somehow deepening.

i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: taylor jenkins reid can do no wrong. i don’t understand how everything she writes is just so fucking good and addicting but i will forever be thankful that i am alive in a world where she is an author.

let’s start with the obvious: everything i know about tennis (which isn’t much) was taught to me by wii sports. not to brag, but i was an absolute god on that. anyway you’ve probably heard this before but no, you don’t need to know anything about the sport to read n love this! the way tjr weaves explanations into the story is perfect and so easy to understand. some of the terms take a bit of getting used to but once you’ve got it, you’ve got it.

one thing about tjr is her main character is going to be a badass woman. see: daisy jones, evelyn hugo, nina riva. and carrie soto was no exception. her take-no-shit attitude was absolutely everything and i loved her for it. she didn’t care what anyone said, did things she wanted to do, you get the idea. i want to be her when i grow up.

we live in a world where exceptional women have to sit around waiting for mediocre men.

let’s talk about the character development for a second too bc truly !!!! i loved carrie from page one but seeing her at the end, when everything sort of came full circle ... why’d it make me tear up a bit? character driven novels where the characters feel completely real just hit different, yk?

of course we’ve got our little bit of romance too. that was another full circle moment. a hint of second chance? sort of? anyway bowe was the absolute sweetest n i adored him and his character development as well. him n carrie were just UGH. everything to me. (view spoiler)

i’m a sucker for a comeback story so naturally i loved the story itself. seeing the progress carrie was able to make both on the court and within herself, the way that all tied together. nikki chan (fellow badass woman) and carrie were just absolutely iconic.

the plot is where the .25 comes off my rating, though. because of the way this is set up it got repetitive, with the different Open matches and what not it’s essentially the same process, and had carrie or the others been weak characters this would’ve been beyond boring. honestly if any other author had written it i probably would’ve hated it.

you know what i did hate though? the ending. what do you mean the story ends with “– girl i want to know what HAPPENS. is it that deep? no. but weeks later and i’m still annoyed. enter: proud hater of any sort of ambiguous ending. usually because they destroy me (ahem ml rio) but in the case because it’s aggravating.

if you got nothing else out of this review, walk away remembering tjr can do no wrong. i will bash this phrase into all of your heads i swear, i just love her brain beyond measure. oh also go read this. if you haven’t, anyway, because as usual i was late to the party on this one!

the extent of my tennis knowledge is wii sports (im aware that this is embarrassing for a sports mgmt major) but tjr can do no wrong 😁"
