I read this book as a master's student. This 'cured' my preconceived notions of thermodynamics and introduced the subject as an elegant way of looking at the macroscopic world. It made me fall in love with thermodynamics. My thoughts after reading the novel:

In `Istanbul:City and Memories� (published in 2003), Orhan Pamuk tells a personal story of his relation with his home city, where still lives. Throughout the book, the melancholy of lost power and influence haunts the city so much so that if one opens windows, the melancholy of the city flows inside the house and Pamuk feels the sadness seep into his own life as well. The Turkish word with Arabic origin, hüzün, melancholy one feels when something or someone dear is lost, fills the pages of Pamuk’s description...Throughout the book, the most irritating thing for me was the overuse of the word ‘melancholy�. It was used so much and so often that it lost all its sharpness and I became numb to its pain. By the end of the book, the word started annoying me beyond measure and one of the reasons I was glad to have finished the book is because I would not again have to go through so many instances of that wretched word. There are also glimpses of hope in the book. These positive moments are centered mostly around Bosporus Strait, simply known as the Bosporus, which separates the Asian and European sides of Istanbul. In Pamuk’s words, “Life can’t be all that bad, I’d think from time to time.
