bookshelves: non-fiction
Scanlon takes us through a broad sweep of macroeconomics and attempts to explain how it's all interconnected using current events (mainly from 2008 - 2024). She does it in her casual style and intersperses it with hand-drawn illustrations of economic concepts.

I'm not 100% sure who this book is for. I originally thought it might be an intro-level book, but then Scanlon will drop a term like "quantitative easing" into an unrelated paragraph, and the reader is left to figure it out. I guess it's best for people who have some understanding of the concepts already but would like to see them fleshed out more. ]]>

This is generally a guide to how to manage people through feedback and caring about them as humans. I wish I had this book when I first became a team manager 20 years ago. ]]>

Heavy on the background of the historical situations you're escaping, and very specific in some of the escapes ("if it's 1:00am, then go back downstairs..."). I guess I expected something more like How to Survive Anything, but in fairness, the book does exactly what it says on the tin. ]]>

Fascinating take on the Arthurian world, Grossman sets his story after King Arthur's death as the few remaining (B-team) knights try to make sense of their new reality, and struggle to keep Camelot alive. This is not a "historical" Arthur story, and there is plenty of old British magic scattered around.
I hadn't read any King Arthur stuff since I was a teenager, and it took me a chapter or two to get into it, but then I was hooked. ]]>

Chilling overview of how social media and smart phones have combined with overprotective parenting to fundamentally change childhood, resulting in a generation that is more anxious, less confident, and has worse mental health than ever before. Every parent and educator should read this, especially the final chapters with suggestions on how to mitigate the damage. ]]>
