This is a brief review of the whole series. My introduction to this world was the Netflix series version which I really enjoyed, and which, Netflix being Netflix, was canceled after the second season leaving me in the dark about how the story would play out.

I’m still in the dark because not only did the Netflix version contain an entire subplot from one of Bardugo’s other series but, now having finished the trilogy, I could tell Netflix was departing significantly from the original storyline, but anyway�

As I started reading was not swept up by the first book. Part of this was because the Netflix series had excellent production values and did a very good job of recreating Bardugo’s worldbuilding � a kingdom based on nineteenth-century Russia that is riven by an immense, mysterious and deadly black curtain called “the fold,� and in which there is a class of magic workers known as “Grisha.� Bardugo’s world is a clever departure from a lot of the fantasy worlds I’m familiar with, but when I stared to read the book, I found that it was hard for her prose descriptions to complete with the very well realized visuals of the television series. I also wasn’t expecting the novel to be in first person and narrated by the protagonist. Alina Starkov. At first I felt the narration over-explained Alina’s thoughts at times, and I felt that Bardugo could have got many of those points across with greater subtlety. Soon, however, I found myself completely swept up in the book. Once past the surface visuals, she was able to expand and deepen her world in a very inventive way. It also passed the test of any good fantasy novel: it was nearly impossible to put down. I’m glad I finally got the books and kept reading them.
