Jason continues to provide thought provoking and entertaining prose. His forward explains more of Direk and his godly dilemma. An excellent example of a short story which moves the underlying narrative further along. I went back and read all of the Direk stories in series order and they make an incredible interlocking story. Highly recommend but are best when read in order. Another triumph for Howard. Political intrigue, masterful sorcery, and slam-bang action throughout. Memorable characters acting during a time of incredible doubt and chaos. This is Lord of the Rings at the ground level, with blood and mud and gore. I had my doubts, but this is a great book in the tradition of REH and old school sword and sorcery. If you’re a history buff it has even greater resonance. This is an excellent review and critique of the S&S genre evolution, as well as a good introduction to readers of new (and old ) material they might have missed. Highly recommend. Although scholarly, it is very readable and gives the impression of a conversation between friends rather than an academic treatise. ]]>
