Sula by Toni Morrison
"what is there even for me to say about a masterpiece like this. there was not one word out place. more than anything, Morrison’s magnetism is the result of her unbelievable commitment to precision and frankness in every sentence. she presents a version of the truth (as in, the truth of any and all situations, people, groups, events, etc) that is ugly and stunning and dumbfounding and irresistible.

i’m so into this idea of female friendship, especially black female friendship, as a deep mutualistic and fundamentally queer search for self, especially when contrasted with the shallowness and extractive nature of what she posits men look for in women.

i have more thoughts but i’ll refrain from blabbing and cluttering the space where Morrison is existing for me right now. but just. wow."

The Emergency by Thomas Fisher
"It was truly moving to read something so specific to the ER I live right by and have interacted with through EMTing the same patient populations, the same ambulances, etc. (shoutout CFD #38 fr)
Fishers’s stories were heartbreaking and his reflections—specifically about his family and their place in the web of health racism—were beautiful.
Overall I think this is such a heartbreaking portrait of emergency medicine that left me feeling worse than when I started it and thats exactly what we all should be feeling. "

Fantastic reading for anyone who went to UChicago or is going to grad school and like me wants to stay away from the deleterious side of that strange world. Coe typifies academia and those who float around it so terrifically, showing all its humor and potentially embarrassing nature. Made me Laugh Out Loud until it didn’t. Then it was a bit sad and jarring to have the laughs stop. I was reading this just to give my noggin a break and chuckle, but I think there was something sort of genius about this book and the ambivalences in it. ]]>
