me personally i love it when a ya book ends and the teen protagonist is still kind of morally dodgy. and i love liars and manipulators and revenge-driven characters. so i had a good time! incredibly satisfying story climax, and though the very last few pages risk being a little corny the aforementioned moral dodginess mostly rescues it. this is not my strongest ever four, and i did like hardinge's cuckoo song more, but nevertheless--very fun experience. ]]>

Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
"4.25/5 stars for this classic that I am surprised I had not read yet. It is, after all, the beginning of science fiction, a genre I love! I heartily recommend this edition as well. Reading the author's original text is always preferable for me. Here's to catching up on more classics this year!"

so tragically, no. however! it is about a tree that you can tell lies to, and if you're very good at lying the tree bears a fruit that you can eat to receive Powerful Visions of the truth. maybe the tree needs better pr actually. ]]>

rounding up very slightly as a 4 star would just not be doing this--or my emotional response to it--any sort of justice. the individual stories are all good-to-fantastic (even the few that didn't quite hit for me are still really solid) AND are also more than the sum of its parts when taken together; though there's no plot link between the stories, they've very thematically cohesive, with memory, music, and cultural legacy being revisited across stories, among other things. and it's just a fun collection to read--pinsker has a bunch of cool (mostly scifi) concepts, and knows how to stick the landing very consistently. my top 3 would probably be 'in joy, knowing the abyss behind', 'wind will rove', and 'and then there were (n-one)', but there truly isn't a bad story in the bunch. highly recommended.
