bookshelves: adult, family-dynamics, mental-health, romance
Abby Jimenez consistently writes full coloured characters dealing with complex dynamics and worries in their life with sensitivity, realism and heart. Her romances are some of my favourite and this one between Xavier and Samantha is no different.

Xavier, a vet estranged from family as a consquence from his parents abuse and Samantha who is moving halfway across the country to look after her mom who has dementia. They fall in love but navigating the distance is horrendous. ]]>

This was a truly incredible companion and devotional for Anne of Green Gables fans, convicting, encouraging, deeply grounded in scripture and an understanding of Anne and her world. ]]>

bookshelves: 20th-century, adult, affair-fiction, audiobook, female-main-character, fiction, historical-fiction, irish-fiction, literary-fiction, new-adult, own-voices, realistic-fiction
I wanted to love it more than I did. It reminded me of my Atonement dilemma when all the ingredients were there but the mix was not quite right. The characters didn't leap off the page, they crawled. They existed but they weren't alive. When the characters were suppose to hold emotional weight I found that they flew. I think it might be that Kennedy rarely lingered in a scene. I like living, breathing, existing in a scene and so many of the moments felt like they were over before they began. They happened, almost in summary. I was compelled by the beat but not impacted by it. We never really sat in unease. Or the unease, tension might not have worked for me.

I would he interested in reading what Louise Kennedy writes next. This is somewhat autoographical. She was a child during the Troubles, her family experienced bombings and attacks at their pub, she hadn't wrote and didn't even intend this as a novel for others. But when she got a cancer in her early fifties, she wanted to write this story. She's now in remission and I hope she has many more years to live and develop her talent. ]]>
