This was the author's first book. He calls it his 'origin story' for the main character, Russell Ray Teague. Russell is a bit immature and when he loses his grandmother, it nearly sends him over the edge. As the story unfolds he rises to new levels and I liked watching him reach an 'atonement' for what he felt was a bad mistake. It was a good time travel trip back to the Vietnam war era.
And it led me to read the next book in the series, which I liked much more, as Russell's character continues to develop. ]]>

I recently read The Hurricane Code again and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though it is a worst-case-scenario story about climate in the future there were so many nice touches that made it a pleasure to read, like the Sentient Computer program called Searcher. The human characters were really good too. ]]>

I liked the Letty character in Sanford's earlier books. But this book as her the main character seemed lacking. Being an equal opportunity reader I really wanted to love it, but I found it a bit shallow and
trashy. (Maybe I had higher expectations for Letty) ]]>
