The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
"Would give this between 3 and 4. I think this book did a great job with detailing this difficult time in American history and portraying the thoughts of the American people during it.

I think the themes here were really clear - the strength, perseverance, adaptability, and the will of the American people during times of hardship are what I think Steinbeck is trying to portray. Some of my recent reads haven’t had this level of underlying themes (or at least I can pick up on) so I’m happy to read a book that does"

A bit boring. I expected the soccer (football, pardon me) aspects, at least, to generate some interest but the tone—throughout both the bleakness of the present and reflections on failures of the past—was monotonous and flat. No sort of evocative emotion even with the extremity of depression and pain undergone by the protagonist. All of the characters felt very ordinary, despite their visceral opinions of each other, and I don’t leave this book with any of them having grown on me.
