I have not wanted syllables where actions have spoken so plainly.

Definitely my least favorite Austen so far, which doesn’t mean much since I’ve loved everything else I’ve read so far. Pacing is my biggest gripe—far too much time spent dwelling on mundanity, or descriptions of nature, or symptoms of illness. I know Austen’s works are sometimes (wrongly) described as “a bunch of people sitting around talking, but that feels like a painfully accurate description for this one.

Overall, good characters, but not real plot for them to drive. ]]>

What makes you want the things you want? Is it your choice, or were you molded?

I had a hard time putting this down. Not necessarily because I LIKED it, but because it was so gripping and compelling. I had to know what happened next, what and who were at the center of the web being untangled. My anxiety was also sky high the entire time, so do with that what you will.

I found the relationship between “Don and the girls frankly unbelievable, and the whole shadow government angle was similarly far-fetched. There were times when I simply COULD NOT suspend my disbelief enough to buy into the plot. I just don’t have conspiracy theorist tendencies, and you need them for the plot to really work.

Still, it was a tight narrative that sunk its teeth into me, and I enjoyed the reading process, even if I had to turn my brain off for most of it.

I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.

Aren't we all looking for a Mr. Darcy? Someone who is willing to improve themselves to be (in their eyes) finally worthy of us? Or an Elizabeth, who realizes when they've misjudged us and re-evaluates our actions in light of that?

I think that's what makes this one of my favorite stories: It's about being seen and understood, despite how badly you cock up your first impressions. It really is a universal story, and one of my ultimate comfort reads. ]]>
