"The banality of creepiness

Two middle-aged adult siblings—a sister, Marion and her brother, John—still live in the old house where they grew up, in the British countryside. Their lives are mundane; Marion is homely, timid, and scared of her own shadow, and John is surly and unlikeable. Then there are the “visitors� who live in the basement. John tends to them, while Marion steers clear, too terrified to even want to know what’s going on in her own house. Until she can no longer escape into her daydreams and is forced to discover the truth about the “visitors.�

With just the right note of melodrama and a generous sprinkling of dark humor, Catherine Burns weaves a tale of everyday creepiness that had me looking at my neighbors with heightened alertness. There is hardly a sympathetic character in the novel, yet the story—and the prose—is so engaging that it’s impossible to resist. Recommended.
