Melissa is coming home from college to visit her parents. When she arrives her mom is nowhere to be found and her dad "has a thing" he tells her as he looks at his watch and leaves. Some homecoming, and it's been a year since Melissa has returned home.

Her mother does return, and Melissa sees her on the porch, as well as with a strange man.....who is this guy? Why is he with her mother? Does dad know about this?

She confronts her mother, and the strange man hurries away as if he is scared, not scared of being seen with her mother, but actually scared of Melissa.

When Melissa talks to her mother she notices that her mom is in a dream like or drug like trance.......what did this guy do? Why was he here? Melissa also noticed the strange man produced a bottle that he drank from.

This is story of Phil. Who is Phil? What is Phil? Is he a friend of the family? Is he a beach bum who has found solace in Melissa's parents? Is he an angle or devil?

No one knows.

What we do know is that Phil lives to drink out people's hopes and dreams and leave them in a catatonic state, except Melissa.......Melissa is full of pain, and sorrow that Phil cowars at just the sight of her.

Melissa has an eating disorder, hell let's face it she's basically Karen Carpenter, she doesn't have a good home life with her parents, because they are obsessed with greed and living the lifestyle of the rich and famous, and they are trying to instill this into Melissa, and she is fighting them on this, she doesn't want that life.

This is a different type of book for Mr. Essig. I enjoyed it, but I really didn't care about the characters. There is a shroud of mystery around Phil and some other characters, that I felt I never really got the full grasp as to what was happening. ]]>

Heed all the warnings this author gives you before reading this.

Jodi, along with her son Ralph, and daughter Poppy are driving across Texas to get to the college that both of Jod's children attend in New Mexico.

Jodi is a widow and she spent the summer with her kids, and now she's looking forward to getting back to her social life. She loves her kids dearly, but she is ready for some "me" time.

As they are driving Jodi mentions that she has to use the bathroom, she asks the kids if they need to go as well, they both reply no. Jodi pulls into the gas station at the next exit.

As she enters the gas station she playfully flirts with the attendant, does her business, grabs some snacks and exits.

She enters the car and she asks Poppy if she's OK while she puts the snacks on Poppy's lap. She then notices that Poppy is quietly crying and doesn't answer her mother. Jodi asks her what is wrong, and why isn't she saying anything?

"Because I told them they couldn't talk."

The voice comes from the back seat, and it's not Ralph. Jodi looks in the back and sees a man holding a gun to Ralph's head and he tells Jodi to drive.

That's all I'm saying.

This book is extremely disturbing, graphic, gross, and straight up shows you how evil people can be.

I was not prepared for what happens in this book. I did not heed the warnings, even though halfway through the author gives us one more chance to turn away........I did not.

I gave this a 5 star review, because this book made me feel, I knew this was a Splatterpunk book and I was OK with that, but I was not prepared for the emotions that came out of me. This is a very well written book, and it's not just gross for gross sake....there is reason for the depravity.

At the end when authors will tell you why they wrote a book or what was going on in their mind, I was expecting to read that the author experienced something like this and this was her way of dealing with the trauma.

No, this was a test. She wanted to see if she could write, edit, have the artwork completed, and have the book finished in 10 days! This was an experiment.
Unbelievable.

If you do read this, heed the warnings, and remember it's only a book. ]]>
