I was pleasantly surprised by this book. To be honest, Sarah Pinborough still never gave up writing supernaturals :))) This book, surprised, surprised, was very much supernatural, which I normally don't read. However, I found this book really entertaining, the writing is on point, the author really portrayed a broken marriage without trust and with so many secrets and intertwined with the history of this haunted house.
This book was very good, indeed. The supernatural elements are not overwhelming, but are scattered throughout the plot in a neat, tidy way. The author never overused the supernatural to solve the problems, rather, the characters themselves were responsible for their own actions. What they decided in the heat of moment is their own doings, and they must live with that. The supernatural added the tension to the decisions that the characters had to make. I like that.

Overall, a ghost story but still focused on the domestic psychoglocial aspect.

Vẫn những dấu ấn đặc trưng của Ranpo: biến thái, bệnh hoạn, kì quặc, d�� hợm, phi logic.

Câu chuyện chia làm hai nửa mà mình thấy hoàn toàn có kiểu motif khác nhau. Nửa đầu mình thấy hứng thú hơn là nửa sau. C�� th��:

1. Nửa đầu truyện: 2 v�� án mạng rất kì l��, rất thú v�� và vô cùng đáng s�� (được bộc bạch trong truyện bởi nam chính) khiến mình tò mò và rất thích đọc. Vì s�� kì l�� của v�� án giết người nên cảm giác hung th�� khá là khôn khéo, thông minh. Mình muốn biết tiến trình điều tra th�� nào, và cách gây án của hung th��. Tuy vậy, mình biết truyện của Ranpo thì yếu t�� điều tra trinh thám không đặc sắc và không phải trọng tâm nên mình không kì vọng gì nhiều vào việc điều tra giết người (may đấy, vì truyện này ch�� có điều tra gì đâu). Nửa đầu truyện gợi được lên những s�� việc kì l��, đáng s�� của một k�� giết người qu�� quyệt vô đ��.

2. Nửa sau truyện: thay vì là án mạng thì truyện tập trung vào du hành phiêu lưu khám phá mang tình tiết kinh d�� - nhưng rủi thay là mình không thấy có gì kinh d�� lắm. Có th�� do đọc nhiều truyện của Ranpo làm mình quen với kiểu d�� hợm bệnh hoạn này rồi nên không còn cảm thấy sốc hay là ngạt th�� gì.. Nửa sau truyện là đi đến cái đảo qu�� theo tên của truyện đó. Và �� đây thì sau đó còn đi giải cứu người b�� nạn, đi tìm kho báu, mắc kẹt trong hang... Nói tóm lại thì toàn b�� phần trên đảo đọc khá là chán. Cái phần giải cứu người b�� nạn nghe có v�� hồi hộp nhưng khi đọc cảm thấy nó c�� làng nhàng không được thú v�� lắm. Phần đi tìm kho báu là chán nhất luôn, sau đó là nhân vật t�� thú k�� l�� quá kh�� kinh khủng đ�� giải thích cho tội ác khủng khiếp được PR �� đầu truyện. S�� khủng khiếp này thì công nhận, rất ghê, th�� hiện đầu óc đen tối d�� dạng của k�� xấu, nhưng mà vì đọc b�� điêu ấy do không đúng với khoa học nên mình không thấy s�� hay hãi hùng gì lắm.

Nhân vật truyện không có gì ấn tượng với mình, vô cùng một chiều. Hai ông chính, trong đó có một ông đồng tính, thì tính cách nhạt nhẽo, chắc miêu t�� được nhất hai ông này là yêu sâu đậm, yêu mù quáng, th�� thôi ch�� không có t�� gì đ�� miêu t�� tính cách nữa. Giọng văn vẫn kiểu khoa trương phóng đại, mô t�� tội ác khủng khiếp, hành động ghê rợn t�� địa ngục, ác qu�� hiện hình, vân vân nhưng mà s�� thật thì không được ghê gớm đến th��.

Nói chung thì truyện của Ranpo toàn kiểu vậy nên mình quen rồi, không chê cũng không khen. Mình tăng thêm tròn trịa 5/5.
Truyện đảo lại câu hỏi v�� định nghĩa anh hùng, phản diện. Trong truyện chẳng có ai là chính diện c��, ch�� toàn phản diện với nhau, lựa chọn t�� hoặc t�� hơn. Truyện tập trung khai thác tâm lý của những nhân vật này, Victor Vale, Eli Cardale và những lựa chọn của h�� dẫn đến quyết định h�� bây gi�� - gián tiếp th�� hiện quan điểm của tác gi�� khi nói v�� điều gì khiến một con người tr�� thành anh hùng, hay một k�� phản diện.
Đợi đọc thêm quyển sequel nữa. B�� này quá hay.

The book is just stunningly amazing, with all kinds of those superheroes/villains things. No one in this book is either superhero or villain, but on the other hand, they are both. It is very complicated to explain the psychological states and mindset of these characters. I am specially fond of Victor. He is cold, calculated, full of pain, but yet, he is somehow more humanly than Eli, though Eli first appears to be a more sensible and calmer person than Victor. Eli turns out to be so faked and no doubt a true hypocrite. I also cannot believe that Serena can do that to her own blood sister, even after their near death experience. Her final action towards Sidney can be deemed an act of penitence, but I think it is a little too late for it, now that Sidney have Victor and Micht by her side. And I'm happy that Dominic Rusher is a crucial addition to the so-called reluctant superhero group. Yes, a revenge has never been so sweet.
