Four brief interludes that supplement the main storyline of this series.. but they don’t really answer any of the questions you’re asking after volume 3.

We Are the Medicine (Surviving the City) by Tasha Spillett
"How I read: 📖

⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Rating System Below)

“Surviving the City: Volume 3 is a powerful and deeply moving conclusion to the series, and once again, it absolutely knocked it out of the park. The illustrations are as stunning as ever, and the storytelling is both poignant and captivating. This volume hit home especially hard, dealing with the aftermath of the COVID shutdowns and the discovery of 215 children’s remains at a former residential school, shedding light on the horrors Indigenous people have faced and fought to be heard about for so long.

What makes this installment particularly impactful is how it intertwines personal growth with historical reckoning. Miikwan and Dez are on the verge of adulthood, and their struggles with future plans are suddenly overshadowed by the weight of their people’s painful history. The way the story addresses the collective grief and anger from these discoveries, while also showing the resilience and strength of the characters, is remarkable. It reminds readers that the injustices endured by Indigenous communities must never be forgotten.

This volume left me deeply reflective, especially in how it highlighted the importance of remembering and honoring those who were lost, while also emphasizing the strength of community and the power of action. It’s a fitting and emotional end to a brilliant series that I would recommend to anyone looking to understand both the historical and ongoing struggles of Indigenous people.

*Star Rating Guide*

The writing style didn’t appeal to me.

The characters didn’t resonate with me.

I pushed myself to the limit to avoid DNF’ing.

I wouldn’t suggest this book to anyone I’m acquainted with.

⭐⭐

The book was passable, but it won’t stick in my mind.

Although I didn’t abandon the book, my mind wasn’t fully immersed in the story.

I discovered that it was easy for me to stop reading it and not feel compelled to continue promptly.

When everything was said and done, I was unsure of my immediate opinion on this book.

⭐⭐

If someone is actively seeking a book in this general premise, I would suggest this.

While it was good, I don’t think I’ll ever pick up this book for a second read.

If it were part of a series, I’d probably venture into the next book.

Reading it was time well-spent.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book was brilliant.

I had the urge to keep reading and turn to the next page.

The book stayed on my mind for days after I finished it.

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

I was actively engaged in wanting to finish reading this book.

My thoughts are consumed by this book after completing it.

I want to have a physical copy as a trophy that I can display on my shelf.

I felt a strong connection and investment while reading this book, would definitely recommend."

We Are the Medicine (Surviving the City) by Tasha Spillett
"Delves into the hurt and grief of the unearthing of the 215 Indigenous kids found on the grounds of a residential school in Canada. Talks about who should be doing the work, whether there can be reconciliation without truth, and the heartbreak that happens when the system fails you and the people you love.

This was an important book about community, activism, and the long history of the mistreatment of Indigenous people.

TW: grief, police brutality, violence; mentions child death, child abuse, religious bigotry.

Finished copy gifted by Highwater Press via ZG Stories in exchange for an honest review."

We Are the Medicine (Surviving the City) by Tasha Spillett
"The Indigenous characters experience the differences between positive activism and reactionary protests as they process the discovery in 2021 of more than 200 unmarked graves dating back decades on the site of the Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia. It's a sad study of the power and danger of anger and the importance of friendship.

It's a fitting conclusion to a series that has looked at various issues for modern First Nations people in Canada."

I feel the educational value of this series is beyond measure and that the classroom conversations around truth and reconciliation that could be started by these graphic novels would be invaluable. Every teacher should read these books. Every school should have Surviving the City in its collections.
