A collection of the author’s stories, including one that produced the fabled movie “A Christmas Story, as he might have recounted them to a childhood friend who is now a bartender. Though many are warm and nostalgic, they’re set in the 1930s and so may be difficult to relate to for today’s reader. ]]>

Heaviest, physically most uncomfortable book I’ve ever read but worth it for a blow-by-blow telling of the 1980 Reagan-Carter presidential election that changed the country. The author, who worked in the campaign and later for the Republican Party, is partial to the 40th president, but he says the facts are partial to him, which is true. It’s doubtful anyone will ever write a more exhaustive but accurate book on the campaign. Worth reading (if you can hold the book). ]]>

I have researched addictions, interviewed addicts and been involved in theater around the subject of addictions, but I don’t believe I ever got as clear a picture of one as in Matthew Perry’s “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. Though the book is a memoir that covers his television life, the main thrust is about his “terrible thing, his addictions to alcohol, drugs and tobacco. His account brings to life the desperation to feed his habits, his understanding of what they’re doing to his life but helplessness to stop it, and the countless rehab tries. It is angry and searing and painful, and made all the more so because, despite the book ending with him being clean and sober, the addictions would eventually cost him his life. ]]>
