There's no 'one thing' that inspires me. Sometimes I think my mind is a little weird because odd things grab my attention: the pattern on fabric, the way a tree's limbs fork, or how a kid laughs. And I find myself turning that over and over in my mind until something different forms: a character, a plot outline, or a new landscape.

I was thinking about the impact of suddenly waking up without a memory. If the person is human and has family members around to fill in the blanks -- that's one thing. But what if the person is not exactly human? And doesn't have anyone there to explain "what" they are? I found that notion intriguing.

Two things. First, I'm ironing out the plot for book two of the Vessel series. And I'm writing my first vampire shape-shifter novel.

Write! Whether you think its crap and don't want anybody to read it -- still, write. It takes some false starts and failures before an author figures out his/her own style. And that's perfectly okay. The path to becoming an author is as unique as the person doing it.
It doesn't matter how much or how quickly you do it -- just write.
Whether you agonize for hours just to get that one sentence perfect -- write. Because after a while those sentences will become a paragraph, a page, a chapter, a book.

Being able to create your own story. Not having to follow any prescribed rules about "how" the world should be, any world that I dream of -- I can make it real.

I run! And I hate running.
I hike a lot of mountain trails and enjoy the more relaxed pace of that kind of outdoor activity so running is not something that comes naturally for me. In order to get through a run and shut down all of my internal kvetching about how much I'm not enjoying it -- I turn my thoughts to something else. That something else is usually the section of the story that has me blocked. And somehow -- between my feet slamming against the asphalt and the end of the course, something in my brain is jarred loose -- I've figured a work around.
