Hi Dawn! This is a really complex question. :) It depends on so many factors. In my case I have quite a few publishers and each one has a totally different schedule for how they do things. As an example...I wrote a novella this spring that was a tag on to my Wasteland Trilogy and that story comes out in September. So that went fast. But I have written stories where a different publisher took a year and a half to publish it and that was after it took me five months to write the book. If it is self publishing it can vary depending on how long it takes me to write a story, then have an editor go through it, then revisions, hiring a cover artist, hiring someone to format the book, uploading the book, etc. A huge variety of possibilities in there. So you can see the answer is...it depends. :) I'm one of those authors who doesn't get too tied up in knots about how long it takes one way or the other to get a book out. Sometimes I need to recharge the creative well by reading, relaxing, watching movies, doing non writing related things for a while. Also, I usually have to remind myself my original purpose for writing. Because I can get caught up in the publishing world's day-to-day silliness just like any other writer can.

Define first and foremost what is driving you to write. What makes you happy about writing and don't ever forget that. If it becomes more about other people's expectations you'll have a lot of difficulties down the line.
