At first, I was able to dismiss the unsettling and muffled noises, sounding so much like distant, distressed voices, that started the night I moved into the ancient house. I also wanted to create a story teaching children not to become discouraged or to give up on their goals and wishes when things don't go as planned, as is often the case. It was also important to show a child eagerly willing to take on adult responsibilities, such as caring for a pet.
