Write. Read books on craft. Write. Take a writing course. Write. Join an author’s group. Write. Read books in the genre you want to write in. Write. Find critique partners. Write. Research. Write. In case you haven’t guessed yet, the main thing you have to do to be a writer is write. Try to write every day, even if you only last five minutes at it and you think what you wrote is awful. Like a lot of things in life, the more you do it, the better you get at it.

I’ve dealt with a bad case of writer’s block in the past few years. What helped is forming a writers� creativity support group (not a critique group) with three author friends. We meet every 2-3 weeks at a café to talk about creativity and the process of writing. We’ve gone through Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way and a few other books.

I do my best writing in the morning, so I try to keep that time clear. Inspiration for me is a clear head not yet filled up with all the day’s chores and events. First drafts can be slow, but as the story starts coming together, it becomes its own inspiration.
