I turn off the computer and do something completely unrelated to writing, such as watching a movie, hanging out with family or friends, taking a bike ride or skating through the park. Usually while I'm engaged in some other activity, the writer's block resolves itself, the pieces of the story fall into place, and I jump back into the story.

I have a couple of ideas bouncing around in my head and I'm waiting for one or both of them to grow into a solid story. One of the ideas involve twin teenage boys and what happens to their family after they makes a tragic mistake. The other involves a twist on the classic bully trope.

Always Leaving began with a dream or, more accurately, a nightmare I had. I was walking down a dark street, alone, aware that something horrible was following me but with no clue as to what that something was. The first chapter of the novel is a modified version of that nightmare.
