It poured out of me during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). While I struggled through week two, Chris Baty (the founder of the event) posted a letter of encouragement and suggested putting a pirate in your story if you're stuck. I did and things took off from there!

I don't go looking for inspiration. I'm the quiet one in the group, who sits back and listens to conversations. I'm a voracious reader and an information sponge. Inspiration comes to me.

I broke away from contemporary romances to work on my first literary fiction, a road story, "Father, Son & Grace," about three very different people who find themselves traveling to Las Vegas together, on a journey that will change their lives. I've had a lot of fun getting them into trouble and letting them figure a way out of it. I published the book over my break between terms, December 2014.

Learn the art of criticism, when to take it, when to ignore it. We put ourselves on the page for everybody to read, whether it's fiction or nonfiction. It feels personal. But remember, it's the story being critiqued, not you! I've seen too many writers abandon a project over somebody else's opinion. Heartbreaking. Write the story you're passionate about, and don't allow anyone to rob you of your voice.

The shower! When the words aren't happening, I walk away from my computer and do something solitary, like vacuum or wash dishes or take a shower. But vacuuming sometimes leads to dusting leads to sorting leads to... Washing dishes, I'm thinking of what to fix for dinner. The shower is four walls and my imagination. I've worked through a lot of stuck dialog and action sequences that way. So far I have been able to get by on just one shower a day. :)
