I listen. To podcasts, to people, to crappy TV shows. Any little thing can help build a world or a character.
I also play a lot of games. Everything from World of Warcraft to Shadowrun. It helps me come up with characters and really get into their heads. And the world building is fun.
And then there's my muse. I married him to keep him close so when he says all the cool things in his head, I get to hear them and write them down.

The advice I hear given to aspiring writers is to just write. And, yeah, that's pretty important. If you don't do that one thing, you're kind of music the main component to being a writer.
But there's more. And the rest is... Harder. You've got to be able to market your work, too connect with people, to network and sell your stuff. You're still a writer if you don't do that stuff, but no one else knows it. And I assume you're asking the question because you want to get paid and you want people to know what you do.
So, research. That's my answer. Find a way to narrow down your question because that one is so big. I could write on it for days and all have an incomplete answer.

Ugh. I just keep writing. It's hard and sometimes what comes out is crap, but it's better than nothing. Crap can be edited into something good. Nothing is just nothing.
Also, I mess around on the Internet and procrastinate. But I don't suggest that. It's super unhelpful.

Getting into people's heads. My favorite thing about being a reader is finding that *thing*. That certain something in a story that shows me I'm not alone, that someone else thought of this thing that's been banging around in my head. I want to write stories that do the same for someone else.

The title came first. I was listening to an episode of Caustic Soda and they were going on a tangent about psychopomps. One of them made the pun "psychopomp and circumstance." I knew immediately that I was going to use that line. The rest was just stitching together these characters and their stories as they tried to figure out what life (and death) after high school is all about.
