Hi Everybody,

My new novel Muse is set in 14th-century Avignon. Everyone on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ has been so wonderfully supportive, I feel very blessed. I am especially happy to see that the group, The Imprinted Life, discussed Muse here /topic/group...

Muse is the first person story of Solange Le Blanc, who became entangled in a love triangle with Francesco Petrarch and Laura, and later caught the eye of Pope Clement VI in 14th century Avignon, when the popes lived there. Muse is available in Italian as L'amante del papa. Check out the prize-winning booktrailer, which I've uploaded to my Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ page. Muse is also available in French from Editions Hurtubise (February 2015).

Beware, dear Countess, of sailors bearing tales from Toulon

To the Vicomtesse de Turenne, palais des Papes, Avignon, as Epiphany approaches, in the year of Our Lord, 1348.

My dear Countess, I write to you as one much changed, whose day is filled with labour and singing the offices faithfully to Our Lord. I have found refuge in this harsh order, with its fierce rule of silence. Here, our hands do the work of our mouths. I have prayed and slept and eaten in m

“What do you most wish for, Izzy?"
"Herbs and salads, and fish straight from the river. A man needs no more than such pleasures.”
Mary Novik, Conceit

“St Paul's cathedral stands like a cornered beast on Ludgate hill, taking deep breaths above the smoke.  The fire has made terrifying progress in the night and is closing in on the ancient monument from three directions.  Built of massive stones, the cathedral is held to be invincible, but suddenly Pegge sees what the flames covet: the two hundred and fifty feet of scaffolding erected around the broken tower.  Once the flames have a foothold on the wooden scaffolds,, they can jump to the lead roof, and once the timbers burn and the vaulting cracks, the cathedral will be toppled by its own mass, a royal bear brought down by common dogs.”
Mary Novik, Conceit

Thank you for your comment, Jackleen. I hope you enjoy my new novel, Muse. I'd love to hear what you think of it!

Jackleen I finished your book Conceit this week, what an excellent book. Conceit, a manipulation of words. The whole novel very sensuous, in that you were able to make textures, smells, colours and tastes come alive. At one point I was making fish for the family for supper, thinking I wonder if I should use butter with this and realized I got the idea from your book! I felt sick when Pegge was tearing her father down from the scaffold; I am an OR nurse so that is saying something. I like how you had Pegge running around bare foot in touch with the physical world. But how to describe this book in a review... I thought I would drop you a line as I missed the book club month. All the best with your next book.
