For You: Sharing My Story of Overcoming Abuse, For You, For Freedom
|

“Yesterday when I got off the bus, I walked to your taxicab first. I was attracted to the black-and-white squares along the roof and the bright green paint, but otherwise, there wasn’t any reason for my choice, was there?â€
“No, he said.
“Was there a reason that you were at the bus station rather than somewhere else in the city?
“I guess not.
“This is the charming coincidence. When things in the world that are unconnected suddenly connect, and a pattern emerges.
He exhaled. “But what if the pattern wasn’t what you’d call charming?
“It’s not the pattern that’s charming,â€ she said. “It’s that there is a pattern at all.”

“I’m not talking about the place filled with flames. I mean the hell the world is when cruelty doesn’t have a reason. When suffering is unrelenting and unrelieved by love.”

“Off course, if Steven had a wife in the attic, like Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre, that, I thought, would be another matter entirely. But the very idea made me laugh. His building had no attic, and his one small closet couldn't even hold a skeleton. It was too packed with clothes, his and mine.”

She writes: "I wanted to finish my novel. If anything, this goal had become urgent now that I knew this might be the last book I would ever write. I was fascinated by the way the book was changing as I went through all this. Though the novel I was writing had nothing to do with my aneurysm, the story kept surprising me as it became more optimistic, more engaged with the beauty of life. I changed the title from "The House of Doubt" to "The Winters in Bloom."
