message 57: by David (new)

David Every week is scifi/fantasy week, as far as I'm concerned =)

I'm currently making my way through Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun after feeling lukewarm about the first book when I read it years ago. It definitely helps to have a reading partner, and to have some external resources. I'm enjoying it way, way more this time. Highly recommend the podcast Alzabo Soup for anyone making their way through this series, either for the first time or doing a re-read. They've done a couple other Gene Wolfe books, too.

CdnBookLover I am re-listening to all of David Weber’s Honor Harrington Universe books. Have finished the Stepahnie Harrington trilogy and the Manticore Ascendant trilogy. Currently listening to The Short Victorious War.

I’ve just read the sample of Avanti Chronicles: Bray’s Balance by Hannah Walker and will read the rest as soon as I purchase it. The Avanti Chronicles, FYI, are LGBT (m/m).

Great series, too bad the author can't get off twitter long enough to even update his web page let alone write the next book.

message 73: by Judy (new)

Judy Claudia wrote: ""The collapsing empire" by John Scalzi..."

My husband is part way through this one. We love Scalzi!

message 74: by Judy (new)

Judy I'm starting Passage by Connie Willis. It's been on my shelf for a long time. After this one, The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi.

I want to recommend my favorites from the last couple of years:

The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin -- unlike many trilogies I've started, this one kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end (and afraid to walk under trees or go out in my backyard after dark).

11/22/63 by Stephen King -- phenomenal time-travel story, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

The Three-Body Problem (Remembrance of Earth’s Past #1) by Cixin Liu -- translated from Chinese, takes place during the Chinese cultural revolution and involves 1st contact with aliens. Really a highly creative masterpiece. I haven't read the follow on books yet.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro - this story is is weird and trippy, but Ishiguro never disappoints

I also loved both Ready Player One and Armada by Ernest Cline. I thought they did a great job on the movie of Ready Player One.

Michael Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch I'm currently reading Good Omens which I started before Fantasy/Sci-Fi Week. One of the funniest books I ever read. Next stop is either Uprooted by Naomi Novik or Storm Front by Jim Butcher. Leaning towards Storm Front though.

message 83: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan I just finished Slouch Witch and am starting Star Witch. After I knock out that, I'm going to go back and re-read Childhood's End by the great Arthur C. Clarke. I have to admit, that I'm feeling a bit nostalgic for some of the old classics that I read back when dinosaurs roamed the land. :o) So I might do a re-read on some that I hadn't thought about in years if not decades. Depending on how my brother does with his physio (knee replacement--football, even at only weekend warrior style is hard on the body.) I might be able to knock out 2 books while I'm sitting waiting on him to get through. He's not able to drive yet, and my sister-in-law has to work. So I offered to drive him. Hey, sitting in hospitals and clinics you have to have something to do. I don't think he's like it if I took my knitting with me--I usually sit and knit and read when waiting for someone--but I don't want to embarrass him. I can do that for my family and enjoy the rolling eyes and grumbles. :o)1

message 84: by Cerys (new)

Cerys I'm re-reading Left Hand of Darkness, which I read ages ago. It's crazy how differently I'm viewing it now that I'm older.
