message 108: by Philip (new)

Philip Fitzell Just finished reading two Asimov books in the Foundation series, and I'm not that impressed. Perhaps it's because I'm also reading many classics of superior quality. Anyone suggest a sf or fantasy book that measures up?
FYI: My book, On the Brink: A Trio of Genres, includes stories in those two genres.

Ethan Nahté Paolo wrote: "Fevre Dream - George R.R. Martin"
I read this book when it first came out back in the '80s. It's one of my Top 3 favorite vampire books from modern writers.

Ethan Nahté Thomas wrote: "Discworld series. Finishing up Wyrd Sisters, then Pyramid's next."

The Discworld series is awesome! I highly recommend Strata, one of Pratchett's early books. It's not a Discworld book, but I truly believe that readers of Strata can see the inkling of an idea that spawned the series.

I loved this series!

message 133: by Sean (new)

Sean I just polished off last week Armageddon: 2419, the first appearance of Buck Rogers. Published in 1919--Buck Rogers will be 100 next year!--the book is unintentionally hilarious all the way through and shows the author's racial and gender chauvinism throughout. On the latter, quick example: the author mentions "men and girls" over and over. Note: Unless I missed a reference, never "women." Very few women are named, one of the few--of course--being Wilma Deering, who quickly becomes our hero's wife. (Note: he's "Tony" in this book. He'll become Buck in later books and the comic strip series.) It's worth reading more for historical value as a window into its time and influence on later sci-fi than for literary value.

Next up: Maybe Richard Adams' Shardik, which has been sitting on my shelf since the 1980s. Is there a category like tsundoku for books that you can't get rid of because you really, really do intend to read them, but keep finding other books to read instead?
