can anyone explain this ridiculous premise to me?? the idea seems to be that they've built a train to house all that remains of humanity. if they've got the technology to do that, it'd be even more effective to create a dome or cave or something that isn't required to move at subzero temperatures and only on rails. is the idea just to completely suspend disbelief??

It just so happens that the launch of this luxury train coincides with an accidental human-made weather apocalypse. The passengers on the train thus include all the rich people who paid for a place, but also all the ordinary people who jumped on at the back at the last minute realizing that it might be their best chance at survival.

But, yes, mostly it's suspension of disbelief in the service of metaphor.
