Can you recommend me any books in which, like "wake of vultures" the protagonist chooses to act or dress as the opposite gender? Maybe a transgender protagonist? Because I really liked the way this was handled in the book - I could do without the western-inspired bit though ;)

If you're looking for transgender and gender-nonconforming protagonists, try "Symptoms of Being Human" by Jeff Garvin, "George" by Alex Gino, and the upcoming "If I Was Your Girl" by Meredith Russo.

If you want characters disguising themselves as the opposite gender to move more easily through a sexist society, try Tamora Pierce's books (especially the Alanna series). Historical fiction has a lot of books like this as well, especially anything set in wartime. (less)
