I like Barry's writing, but don't want to waste time with fiction that is not historically correct. Has someone who is well-versed in the Civil War and Indian Wars read this book?

Few dates and places are mentioned in the narrative because, I'd guess, it's designed less to teach, more to make us think.(less)

Am I the only one who finds the violent racism to be a real problem? I mean, our protagonist is a murderer of indigenous people. I get that this really happened, and maybe Barry is simply giving us historical fiction against this backdrop, but why are we made to feel sweet or sympathetic to this character? Oh, but he's gay and sweet and likes to wear dresses, he can't be so bad...That feels problematic. Anyone else?

I think os some ways this novel is showing it “like it isâ€� - painting a Native American child in blackface, killing Native Americans based on a white man’s complaint etc - it’s a past we have to reckon with as uncomfortable as it is.
