I grew up in Oregon but have lived all over—D.C., Virginia, Maryland, London,
Wyoming. My father was an FBI agent and I was a bureau kid, which is similar to being an army brat. You tend to spend your time with other bureau kids and get transferred around a lot, though, I fared better on that front than many others.

One positive aspect of this lifestyle is that you can’t help but absorb an enormous amount about the FBI, CIA, Special Forces, etc. Like most young boys, I was endlessly fascinated with talk of chasing criminals and, of course, pictured it in the most romantic terms possible. Who would have thought that all this esoteric knowledge would end up being so useful?

I came into writing from kind of a strange angle. When I graduated from college in the late eighties, I had the same dream as everyone else at the time—a corporate job, a nice car, and a house with lots of square footage.

It turns out that none of that really suited me. While I did go for the corporate job, I
drove a beat-up Jeep and lived in a tiny house in a so-so Baltimore neighborhood. Most of the money I made just kind of accumulated in my checking account and I found myself increasingly drawn to the unconventional, artistic people who lived around me. I was completely enamored with anyone who could create something from nothing because I felt like it was beyond me.

Enter rock climbing. I’d read an article on climbing when I was in college and thought it looked like an incredible thing to do. Someday, I told myself, I would give it a try. So one weekend in the early 90s, I packed up my car, drove to West Virginia, and spent a
weekend taking lessons. Unknown to me at the time, this would be the start of an
obsession that still hangs with me today. I began dating a girl who liked to climb and we decided we wanted to live somewhere with taller rocks and more open space.

Moving to Wyoming was the best decision we ever made. The place is full of the most amazing people. You might meet someone on a bike ride and find out they were in the Olympics, or climbed Everest, or just got back from two months trekking in Nepal. In a roundabout way, it was these people who made it possible for me to write a novel. They seemed to have no limitations. Everything was possible for them and I wanted to be that type of person, too.

I was working for a little bank in Jackson Hole, spending my days making business loans and my afternoons and weekends climbing. For some reason, it finally occurred to me that I’d never actually tried to be creative. Maybe I could make something from nothing. Why not give it a shot?

My first bright idea was to learn to build furniture. That plan had some drawbacks, the most obvious of which being that I’m not very handy. It was my wife who suggested I write a novel. It seemed like a dumb idea, though, since I majored in finance and had spent my entire college career avoiding English courses like the plague. Having said that, I couldn’t completely shake the idea. Eventually, it nagged at me long enough that I felt compelled to put pen to paper. Eight months later, I finished Rising Phoenix and about a year after that I managed to get it published.

The success of Rising Phoenix and my subsequent books has allowed me to make my living as a writer, which isn’t bad work if you can get it. Other than that, my life hasn’t changed all that much. Aging elbows have forced me to replace climbing with backcountry skiing and mountain bike racing. I got the not-so-smart idea of restoring an old pickup to replace the dying Jeep. And, I still live in Wyoming...

Steven Weber is excellent as Mitch Rapp, can we KEEP HIM?❤️🎧

Rapp disguised as a Canadian lawyer and inserted himself in Syria for a drug lord to whom he owes a favor. Turns out to be more than just narcotics and money, but a bigger agenda fueled by Russia.

Code Red was really good; action and story. I loved most of it, but have not gotten used to Rapp being a family man with Claudia and Anna. (Why Kyle??)

This is Kyle Mills' last book in the Mitch Rapp series. Thanks for keeping him alive and giving us great books to enjoy for almost a decade, Kyle!🙌

Excited to start this! 👏 Grabbed the eAudiobook from Overdrive when they first added it, today, 6 days after it came out. I'm wondering if it's super expensive for a library edition or if Simon Schuster Audio rather have listeners buy retail instead of waiting. 🤔

CODE RED (A Mitch Rapp Novel Book #22) by Vince Flynn/Kyle Mills is another exciting addition to this political/terrorism thriller series. This is Mr. Mills last book in this long-standing series, but the series is continuing with another author. While this book begins with the repayment of an obligation from a previous book and the main characters continue to evolve, it is still easily read as a standalone thriller. I am privileged to be a chosen Ambassador to this series.

Mitch Rapp owes a favor to one of the world’s most powerful drug lords, Damian Losa, for the help that only he could provide in locating a threat to Mitch’s family. Losa is calling in his marker and sends Mitch undercover into Syria, but things do not go as planned. When Mitch is double crossed, he considered his debt paid and he goes after a Russian developing a designer drug that could easily destroy Western civilization as we know it.

Off the official books, Mitch and his team come together in Syria to take down this latest threat before Russia uncovers their plan and it turns into a major international incident.

I really love this series, but not this one until about a quarter of the way into the plot. I found Losa using Mitch the way he did just not what I expected, and it just did not fit the Mitch persona, so I did not really buy it and it dragged. The plot with the Russians making a new drug that could destroy Western society is when it grabbed my interest and the action took off with what I have come to expect in a Mitch Rapp book and that made it a good addition to the series for me. The book satisfied me by the end when Mitch and his team do what they do and made up for the slower beginning. I love this series for the intriguing political/terrorism plots that are not out of the headlines, but almost seem like the author can see into the horrors of the future. While I do not feel this is the best Mitch Rapp in the series, it is still an action roller-coaster thrill ride to the end.

I have loved this series since book one when Vince Flynn started it, and Kyle Mills has been an excellent choice to continue it and hopefully it will continue to be one of my favorite action thriller series as the author changes once again. Thank you for your stewardship, Mr. Mills.

Chock full of disgusting violence, Code Red is quite the swan song for Kyle Mills. I wasn’t sold on Mills taking over the series mainly because I didn’t know anything about him and I am glad I couldn’t have been more wrong. Mills has put Rapp through some shit and took the series and Rapp himself to places that seemed impossible when he first took over. At times it seems as if Mills has a crystal ball. Straight voodoo. And Code Red is no different. I mean, the man basically foresaw the coup attempt in Russia.

Thank you, Kyle Mills, for taking Mitch to new heights while being true to the Mich Rapp Vince Flynn created. I am a fan for life and can’t wait to see what Mills tackles next.

Thank you to Atria/Emily Bessler Books and the Vince Flynn estate for the honor of reviewing an advanced copy of Code Red!

This series is at it again. Rapp is injected into a wild international ride that leads to a Russian/Syrian team that is about to unleash the most cynical, asymmetric attack on the Western world.

He is coopted into the worst of situations because he owes a favor to a very bad guy who helped Rapp find a drug lord who didn’t want to be found but whom Rapp needed to pay a visit.

Hoping to wipe the slate clean from this past debt doesn’t bode well for Rapp, and he winds up getting tossed to the wolves by none other than the Israelis, who hand him over to some very bad Syrians and, ultimately, a Russian General who is neither a friend of the West or his boss in Moscow. Worse, Washington will be no help, which is typical of his continuing fights against bad guys, so now the mission is up to him and his teammates.

The ending is delightful and unexpected.

This book is not only a page-turner but a must read. Tom L.

First I would like to thank Kyle Mills. I don’t know many authors who could have continued the legacy of Vince Flynn and picked up the mantle of Mitch Rapp with more elegance and professionalism than Kyle has done. Kyle took one of the most beloved characters in this genre and grew Rapp even more and put him on a path that he is here today at the end of this book!! Code Red was a tour de force of Mitch Rapp with none stop action and some introspection. Kyle Mills really pulls out all the stops in his finale and leads us all the way to the last page wanting more and standing up and clapping that we can all see where he has brought Rapp and the Rapp universe and for that we are thankful!!

A longtime fan of the Mitch Rapp series, I have navigated from the inception at the hands of Vince Flynn through to its continuation with Kyle Mills. Never one to hold back, Rapp has made sure to find trouble and plunk himself into the middle of it. While the scars have not faded and the body aches, Rapp wonders if it is time to end his work as a CI operative. However, when he owes someone a favour, he cannot ignore it, no matter how dangerous the mission. A strong addition to the series that helps solidify just why Kyle Mills was the best choice to keep the series going.

After news hits the blackmarket that the Syrian Government has created a new and highly. addictive narcotic, many are eager to get their hands on it. With plans to have its distribution across Europe to help fund the ongoing battles in the region, a massive windfall awaits. However, there are others less than happy about this, especially Mexican crime boss, Damian Losa. He has a plan to circumvent the Syrians, but will need some help.

When Losa calls Mitch Rapp, it is not a pleasant conversation. While Rapp wants nothing to do with the mission of helping someone get a lock on drug distribution, he owes Losa a favour and is not one to refuse to repay his debts. Losa knows that Rapp will be perfect for the job, both because Rapp knows the Middle East like the back of his hand and the former CIA operative is entirely expendable, so his dying will mean little.

Arriving in the region, Rapp tries to get to the heart of the matter. He soon learns that the Syrians have not created the narcotic for their own financial gain. Rather, it is the Russians who created this narcotic, in hopes of flooding the Western market and creating major disruptions. While Rapp wants to help Losa, there is more to the equation and he must act swiftly.

Working with his team, Rapp devises a plan to help protect the United States and ensures that this new drug does not reach the European market. It comes with a great deal of risk and Rapp trusts almost no one. He will have to act quickly and gamble repeatedly. Should the Russians learn of their plan, it could cause grievous issues and create a very public battle that could mean a new Cold (and hot) War for all! Mills does it all in this latest salvo that has me eager to see what’s to come.

Kyle Mills knows just what is needed to keep things moving and how Vince Flynn would want them to come together. A strong story, full of poignant, current political and military happenings, helps push things along and keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. There is little that is off the table and the story advances with ease, adding danger and risk at every turn. Mills weaves things together but refuses to make them tranquil, as Mitch Rapp would have it no other way.

Character development might be shelved, but onward advancements keep things fresh and on point. Mitch Rapp has seen so much in his life and is surely pining for the quieter life, but he has a few things on his checklist to complete before entering retirement. I can only hope that Mills has tied up any loose ends, for Rapp will not be able to use willpower to turn away from future conflicts. The end leaves Rapp’s future open and up to future novelists, something I will address blow.

When I discovered that this will be Kyle Mills last novel in the Mitch Rapp series, I was a tad concerned. How would things keep moving forward? Rapp requires a great deal of action and stories must be full of twists. Mills has done well to mirror Vince Flynn’s writing, where Rapp is always tossed into the middle of the action and is never safe from potential death. I can only hope that there’s will either be a new and well-versed author who can pick up the torch, or Mitch Rapp will finally get his desired retirement. It almost seemed as though something was up in the epilogue, but I will leave that for readers to decide for themselves. I will have to wait, as nothing seems certain in the world of Mitch Rapp.

Kudos, Mr. Mills, for a classic end to your tenure guiding Mitch Rapp.

We have reached the end of an era! This is the last Mitch Rapp from Kyle Mills... Code Red is in my mind one of the best he ever wrote. Don't you worry now, there is a new guy taking over the series. Maybe you have heard of him? It's Don Bentley, I am sure he will do a great job of it. In this one Mitch is in a difficult situation. He ows a favor to a really dangerous criminal and he needs Rapp to help him out in Syria. I found the book well written as we all expect from this author. I really enjoyed reading about Mitch going undercover as a man not used to violence and trying not to show that he does now how to shoot and fight. It is also funny seing him trying to balance work with some form of family life, he should be taken of the frontlines and given another role but there is no replacement figure groomed for the part of taking over which I would love to see, like Stan training Mitch in the beginning of his career. This is a problem not only with this series but with many more out there. When the series passes a certain number of books and the age of the main character is getting up in age. I know we all love our heroes but it sometimes gets a little too much. Don't get me wrong I love this series and it's not the worst. Connellys Bosch served in Vietnam? Or take a look at Spenser by Robert Parker. I still recommend this book for all fans of thrillers and I can't wait to see what will happen next. I must thank Atria Books, Netgalley and most of all James B. Apt for his kindness in helping me get a physical copy of this book. I am a proud first time Mitch Rapp ambassador.

This book has everything that you’d like in an action story plus it’s not fictional-well, not something that was or could be impossible. Drugs are scary. Enough said about that. You do/should read all his other books leading up to this one. Well worth the read.

Kyle Mill’s last entry into the Mitch Rapp series does not disappoint. A debt Mitch owes a Mexican Drug Lord is called in. Mitch feels he has no choice, but to honor the debt. Mitch is sent to Syria to act as Damian Losa’s emissary to come to terms with the Syrian Government on distribution for a powerful new drug. As Mitch begins to learn more in Syria, he finds out it isn’t the Syrian Government behind the drug. It turns out it is the Russians, and they plan to use the drug to bring down Western Civilization. As Mitch fights enemies from all sides, he must find a way to save America and the West before it is too late.

The plot of this book is fascinating. Mr. Mills keeps finding new and unique ways to put Mitch in an impossible situation, but still make it sound plausible. Using war torn Syria as a back drop while using the Russians as the enemy was brilliant. Having Mitch without his back up of the CIA or Scott Coleman and his team for most of the novel, only raises the intensity and trouble for Mitch. Mitch is forced to play a different role from his normal shoot first mentality, and it is fascinating to see him adapt and use it to his advantage.

While it is bittersweet that Mr. Mills is leaving the series, Code Red was a great way to go out. This is the best book I have read this year, and I would highly recommend you pick it up when it becomes available on September 12th. While it is tough seeing Kyle Mills go, I am excited to see what Don Bentley can bring to the series. Thank you to @VinceFlynncom @AtriaMysteryBus @EmilyBestler and @KyleMillsAuthor for allowing me to be a Mitch Rapp Ambassador this year and providing a free advanced copy for an honest review.

This book is another one that nightmares are made of. A terrorist using narcotics that have been manipulated to cause the most severe addiction ever seen and eventual permanent psychosis of everyone who takes it. Something like this in the real world would be catastrophic. And the reality is that it could happen.

Every time I read one of Kyle Mill’s books, I can’t stop thinking about it long after I have finished it. I worry that one day, one of these horrible scenarios will come true and our only hope is that there are real Mitch Rapp’s in the world that will help to prevent this.

I do want to say that this book was extremely violent at points and that it’s not for someone who struggles to read about the harsh realities of the world.

I honestly could have read this all in one day, but I have had so much going on. I am sooo sad that this will be Kyle Mills last Mitch Rapp book. I hope that the guy taking over can keep up the direction that he has taken this series.

ARC Book Review Vince Flynn Code Red Kyle Mills
The plot and storyline of author Kyle Mills last Vince Flynn Mitch Rapp novel, “Code Red was sufficiently satisfying! Mills concludes his stint with the series with a ‘slam dunk espionage thriller that is ‘top notch. It is bittersweet in seeing Mills leave, but I am especially elated to know that author Don Bentley will be following behind him in continuing the Mitch Rapp series. Mills pens another terrific Mitch Rapp action thriller in Code Red. In repaying a debt to a ‘not-so-nice drug lord, Rapp honors his word and puts everything including his life and his family on the line to ante up on the debt. During the unsanctioned mission, Rapp finds out that the Russians are planning on using a new and powerful drug as a weapon against the West and Rapp must stop their devious plan before millions of people are killed. Rapps actions and reactions in this narrative are remarkable! Mills continued to progress the Rapp character even after so many books. Mills demonstrated Rapp’s usual ‘badassery, his subtle vulnerabilities, and his clever mindset in a full range of impressive main character capabilities and competences. Laced with explosive action, intellectual plotting, and suspenseful storytelling, Code Red was a fitting conclusion to Kyle Mills tenure with the legendary Mitch Rapp series. Special thank you to Emily Bestler Books / Atria and author Kyle Mills for the opportunity to advance read Vince Flynn’s Code Red. I am honored to be a Mitch Rapp Ambassador and look forward to continuing my reading admiration of one of the best action thriller characters in the thriller genre. Good luck Don Bentley, you’re going to do great as well!

Sadly Average

Vince Flynn created a great character in Mitch Rapp, and wove him into excellent thrillers. The series in now written by Kyle Mills and is sadly, average. The plot is original, but the reader is taken out of the story by too many convenient developments. Rapp also takes some actions that are inconsistent with his character. The ending is especially unsatisfying.

Good, but definitely not the best Mitch Rapp book. It sometimes felt like the author pulled punches with the storyline. I listened to it on audible and the narrator (Steven Webber) did a good job, but it wasn’t the same as George Guidall. Mr. Webber read Stephen King’s It and he did a great job with this novel.

Not up to par!

Not very interesting and convoluted plot. Dialogue was inferior and weak protagonist. SPOILER ALERT no way bad guy torturer, rapist, murderer should have been allowed to live. Comparing him to Wernher von Braun is ludicrous and irritating. Worst Mitch Rapp book ever, only gave it 2 stars cause it’s Mitch Rapp.

I was given the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Code Red by the publishers, Atria and Emily Bestler Books, for an honest spoiler free review. This book will be available on 9/12/23.

Before I begin my review I want to thank and congratulate Kyle Mills on a job well done. This is his ninth and final Mitch Rapp novel. He has done a wonderful job carrying on the legacy of the character that was created by the late Vince Flynn. Thank you Kyle for your hard work and dedication to the characters in these books.

As previously stated, Kyle Mills has been continuing a series originally created and authored by Vince Flynn. I believe Kyle Mills has written books, including Code Red, that are equal to what Vince Flynn had published. In fact, I think with Code Red and the other eight books he has written in the series that he has grown the character and given us so many others to root for. Code Red is classic Rapp. This means the action is intense and the pages turn with ease as the reader cannot wait to see what will happen next. I implore you to preorder this book so you can see all that happens. It is entertainment at its best.

Not my favorite Mitch Rapp book. This time he was in Syria dealing with drugs that were designed not only for people to be "hooked on them;" but also to do great harm to their brains which was non reversible.
I would so much rather see Mitch go to D.C. and clean up the CIA, FBI and DOJ. Now that would be a best seller.

I would give this 4 1/2 stars if possible. Excellent action, excellent background/setting in Syria; kind of hilarious Losa cartel character and of course Mitch Rapp and his team are always terrific.

As realistic as the book is, the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it is oddly unrealistic about the China vs. Russia threat. IRL the player (think fentanyl, which also comes into the US via the cartels or Covid--albeit with US help) supplying adulterated drugs to the world is more likely to be China than Russia. Russia uses poisons, of course, but apparently specific "just" to targeted assassinations.

Exiled Russian Semenov is an appropriately unlikable villain.

Climatic fight scene is just excellent, carefully plotted.

Highly recommended. Sorry that this is the last of Kyle Mills writing the Vince Flynn characters; Mills has definitely kept the series fresh and interesting. (The Vince Flynn series will continue with a new writer.)

Kyle Mills does it again! From the first page I was drawn in and couldn’t put it down! Mitch Rapp with his code of honor, travels to Syria only to find the Russians there are planning to introduce extremely addictive drugs into Europe and then the United States. I’m always stunned when I finish one of these books. I want more! Great job and a must read!

Code Red is hardly Kyle Mills' best in the series, but safe to say he's going out with a bang, it's an absolute blast. Though I do believe Oath of Loyalty would have worked better as the final entry in Mills' run.

I'm sorry to see him go, he did what Vince Flynn failed to do: Turn me into a Mitch Rapp fan. I'm not sure I'll connect with Bentley's books the way I did with Mills'. Fun while it lasted, I guess.

Kyle Mills did a great job carrying the ammo for Mitch Rapp as he came off the bench to fill in for Vince Flynn.
CODE RED is a great thriller and powerful way for Kyle to step away( look forward to the future works) . I recently re-read EXTREME MEASURES to get a taste of VF Mitch and compare to KR and wow they are the same guy.
The changes in the world and the USA is depicted masterfully.

And the greatest line in all of the books shows up on page 34 , referring to Mitch and Walmart.

Great job and look forward to more Mitch Rapp from Don Bentley and more fun from Kyle “Flynn”…Mills in the future.

As a #Mitch Rapp Ambassador, I was fortunate to get an Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Code Red. This is the last installment for Kyle Mills, who took over the series after Vince Flynn passed away. Don Bentley will be taking the reigns in 2024.

Mills has done a superb job in taking over my favorite series, and in Code Red, he has done it again.

Damien Losa helped Mitch Rapp and called in his favor. He is sending Mitch into war-torn Syria to gather Intel for the Drug Cartel boss about a new drug entering into Europe that will cut into Losa's territory.

While everyone is trying to flee Syria, Rapp is going in. Once there, though, he realizes the Syrian government is not the problem, and he unravels a bigger threat to the US than what Damien Losa is worried about.

Thank you Kyle Mills for continuing my favorite series, and good luck in the future. Can't wait for you to continue Fade series.

Looking forward to seeing where Don Bentley will take Mitch next.
