For hunted recluse Rafe McBride, the raven-haired beauty on the auction block is exactly what he doesn't need. A dependent woman will be another clue his vengeful stepbrother can use to find and kill him. But Rafe's conscience won't let him leave another innocent's virginity to the riff-raff bidding. He buys her, promising to return her to St. Louis untouched. He only prays the impending blizzard holds off before her sultry beauty breaks his willpower.
She wanted freedom, not a lover.
Whisked to the auction block by her devious, gambling cousin, and then sold into the arms of a gorgeous stranger, outspoken artist Maggie Monroe isn't about to go meekly. Especially when the rugged mountain man looks like sin and danger rolled into one. But a blizzard and temptation thrust them together, and Maggie yearns to explore her smoldering passion for Rafe.
But when the snow clears, will the danger and secrets that surround Rafe and Maggie tear them apart?
Jennifer Jakes' first love has always been reading. Summers were spent in the library with Sacajawea and Pocahontas . . .until her mom handed her a Harlequin Romance. From that day on, Jennifer was hooked on romance. Now she combines her love of the Old West and Romance in her writing.
Her debut novel, RAFE'S REDEMPTION, was a 2010 RWA Golden Heart Finalist in the Historical category.

Rafe's RedemptionÌýturned out to be a huge disappointment!
I had a difficult time finishing this book and contemplated quitting many times. I finally just bit the bullet, so to speak, and skimmed to the end.Ìý
I had high hopes for this story considering the few, but highly rated, reviews this book received. I expected to read an exciting, riveting, and romantically erotic tale. Unfortunately, what I hoped for and what I received were not the same.Ìý
Instead of feeling immersed in and part of a compelling love story, I felt more like an observer. The author told me the character's thoughts and feelings instead of allowing me to experience them. This became rather odd and disconcerting when try to feel the emotions during the book's explicit love scenes! There were times I felt like I was reading a text book rather than an erotic novel.
As much as I like the two main characters-with whom I never fully connected-they are easily forgettable.
Overall, I did not like this book or the author's writing style. The story wasÌýdispassionate, formulaic, and, frankly, boring!ÌýI doÌýnot recommend it.Ìý
It’s easy to see why this book Has Won Blue Ribbons…It’s a Very Good Debut Novel! And it’s hot but sweet, my fav…Yummy. Not to mention I’m a sucker for this type of plot; H rescues h, auction, virgin, attraction, love, justice, redemption. It has some suspense when the bad guys show up, but mostly it’s a love story about 2 people who have been rejected/ridiculed/betrayed by their families, have a fear of getting attached yet the need to love and be loved can’t be denied. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the love between Rafe and Maggie grow with each new chapter. They’re a perfect match for each other. This is considered an erotic novel, and it has lots of sex hot enough to melt the snow(of course they are snowed in for the winter so what else are they supposed to do?..Hehehe) but it’s not over the top and blends well with the story.
What I didn’t particularly like: 1) Maggie’s use of the word cunny, but I didn’t let it bother me and just substituted a different word and kept on reading. 2) Maggie’s ‘thoughts of wanting Rafe right after they meet were a bit unrealistic for a virgin.
All in all, I give this book a B+ = 4.5 I would recommend this book to those that like the Promise Series by Sarah McCarty. I will buy the next book by this new author.
This started out with such potential and somewhere the story got lost amidst the sexcapades. It could have been an awesome adventure, but basically it's about 2 people who live on a mountain, kill some relatives and have sex, lots and lots of sex. *yawn* It could have gone in so many directions, but it didn't go anywhere and neither did they. The relationship was almost childish at times and that's were Rafe lost me. Maggie okay, I get it , but for a man who showed such awesome alpha tendencies in the beginning of the book, he disappointed me. Really Rafe, when you nail someone that many times, uh she's bound to get pregnant!! Hey I'm all for steamy sex, but it doesn't do anything for me if there's no passion, and that's was missing. We could have used some more depth here. The ending...was just that, an ending.
I seem to be in the minority here, because so many people loved this book. So, maybe it was just something I should not have been reading in the first place.
This book took place in the Western Territory near Colorado in November of 1866. The jest of the story is about our heroine, Maggie, who was to collect her father's inheritance and share it with her evil cousin. They were traveling from St. Louis to the Western Territory while the male cousin gambled almost all of it away across the country. Now he was so much in debt he was selling Maggie, his cousin, in a terribly poor and downtrodden area where there were no lawmen and just a lot of drunken losers. Basically he was selling her virginity and these men were starved for a female body.
When she is removed from the tavern/bar by her cousin he drags her onto the main street and thus begins a bidding war. Thankfully a man who lives up in the mountains trying to make himself scarce had come to town for supplies. He saw something going on in the streets and went to check it out. He is a good man, a wonderfully gorgeous man who couldn't stand to see this lovely young woman sold for her body and virginity to the highest bidder. He buys her and takes her home only his plan is to take her to an army fort not very far away and buy her a ticket back to St Louis...untouched! They just have to get through the snow storms first.
He does his best to stay away from her and swears he will never, ever touch her...but as time passes and they grow closer they each being to feel differently.
Rafe is living out of sight up in the mountains. He was accused of killing someone and now he is being chased and the ones chasing want him dead. What really happened? Yes he did shoot and kill a man, a step-brother, I believe, but only to protect a woman's honor as the man was trying to rape her. Both he and Maggie had been brought up in wealthy families in St. Louis and he is still determined to send her on her way but by the time the winter snows have melted and they were able to travel...well...they had grown close, very close.
Our hero wasn't a man-whore, but he was experienced from his days in society while living in St Louis. This book is pretty hot! The only negative thing about it is that it moves slowly in places and I began to wonder if it would ever rap up. I guess since I read a lot of Harlequins this book seemed quite long to me. It may not for you.
It is a good read and I will definitely read it again. I do recommend it!
I will start off with a great quote from the book “You’re everything to me. You’re my life. You’re my redemption.
This is a powerful book from beginning to end, with endless moments of suspense. This books starts off with Maggie’s cousin trying to auction her off to pay off his gambling debt. I would just die; imagine back in the 1860’s the types of sick crazy psycho men out there at that time. The setting is in Colorado where there is endless snow in the winter time. Then, worst of all, Maggie is with a man that has just bought her like she was a rag doll. As I started reading this book I started to fall in love with the characters, I found myself with tears in my eyes and my stomach in knots. I just could not put this book down because you just want to see how Rafe and Maggie will be able to be happy with a man hunting down Rafe and a crazy psycho of a cousin after Maggie.
Rafe first appears like a total ass because of how he treats Maggie, but then again he can’t let any of the men that are ready to buy her have her. Rafe is a good guy, loving, caring and strong and able to hold his own. The only problem is that once he has a taste of Maggie he is totally lost. He can’t keep his hands off of her and loves her to death. The only problem is that she is a city girl can he truly makes her happy and also he needs to remember that there is someone after him. Rafe truly means well but his past haunts him and he needs to understand that he did the correct thing.
What can I say about Maggie, she is a feisty woman. I love how she keeps Rafe’s on his toes at all times and how she is able to just make him tick. She knows when to battle with him and when to keep her mouth shut but it’s not that often. Maggie is a beautiful woman that has dreams and will sacrifice everything in order to make her future a reality. I love how no matter how much she has fallen in love with Rafe she has a firm belief that she does not want to get married to any man because she will not be told what to do, no one will boss her around. After time has gone by the more she falls in love with Rafe the more she tries to stall in going back home to St. Louis not only out of love but also because coming out of hiding will place Rafe in danger. She will do anything in order to keep him safe.
After the first time that Maggie gives her virginity up to Rafe it is so magical for her. That is the moment that Rafe is enthralled with her and will not let anything happen to her. What is so funny is that after that it seems that they cannot keep their hands off of each other. They are like bunnies at every opportunity they get. They have so much chemistry that it sucked me in. I love how gentle Rafe is with her and how passionate he can be. Maggie can also be a little feisty in bed and will test Rafe and taunt him like crazy.
This is a wonderful romance and the characters that come to play in the story work well together. I would love to read more about Rafe and his mom, how about Maggie was she able to make her dream come true and how about them returning back to Colorado. Will all their dreams come true? I truly enjoyed reading this story and recommend it to anyone that loves to read a good romance story with a little of suspense into it.
I was hooked by the first chapter of this book. This was the first ‘erotic historical fiction novel that I’ve read in awhile. I used to be hooked on them! Then I slowly started reading historical fiction that still had a little sexy stuff going on, but had more of a historical base to it than an erotic.
Maggie and Rafe are the two characters in this novel. They both come from wealthy families, but through different circumstances they end up in a way disowned by their families. Maggie because of a step-brother who was no good, and Rafe because of something he had done during the Civil War. The sexual tension through the first part of the book was pretty intense! I definitely was holding my breath at times because of some of the VERY naughty language. I’m in no way a prude, so it was appealing and not at all disgusting to me. However, if you’re a sexual prude, then obviously don’t pick this book up. If you feel like getting kinda turned on, well then, this book is for you! Lol I won’t lie, when the sexual tension was finally over, and they took it to the next level, the sex scenes and the dialogue between each other AND in their heads was pretty arousing! So if you are into erotic fiction, this is most definitely a book to pick up!
It also has a really good story line, and enough adventure to keep the reader interested. It isn’t all about sex like some erotic novels. The author did an excellent job of making both Maggie and Rafe well-rounded characters, and the reader is rooting for them the whole time. It’s not just about random, gratuitous sex; it’s also about passion and love between two good people. Rafe come across as a hard guy at first, but of course Maggie is able to get through his hard exterior to see the amazing guy he really is.
There are also the antagonists in the story, because you can’t have a good adventure story without someone or several someone’s who are trying to either break up the romantic relationship or are enemies from before and are trying to settle a score. One of these people is Maggie’s step-brother, who is trying to have her killed because he wants to inherit the Monroe fortune, and the other is Simon who is Rafe’s step-brother who is trying to revenge his brother Shane. Shane was a rapist, and Rafe didn’t let him get away with it, so there are scores to be settled, and that adds to the excitement.
I would without a doubt give this novel 5 out of 5 stars. It was well written, had a great story line, well-researched, and the descriptions were great!
Reviewed for Rafe’s Redemption is a stand-alone, historical, western, erotic romance. Maggie came west with her cousin, both to settle her late father’s affairs and to draw the beautiful frontier for an upcoming art show she’s planning to take part in back in her hometown of St. Louis. However, wanting the inheritance all for himself, her unscrupulous cousin decides to get rid of her along the way. Since he also finds himself with gambling debts in the little town of Cougar Creek, Colorado, he places her on the auction block. Maggie is terrified by all the rough mountain men who eagerly start bidding on her, but then through the crowd comes a handsome stranger who outbids them all. Rafe only came to town for supplies but he can’t stand to see a woman being mistreated. He only intends to get her out of her predicament and then take her to the nearest fort where she can find a stagecoach back home, but with a snowstorm moving in quickly, he has no choice but to take her to his cabin in the mountains until it’s safe to travel. Days turn into weeks, and soon neither of them can resist the delicious sexual tension that’s been growing between them. However, Maggie is an independent woman who isn’t sure she wants to tie herself to a man permanently. Not to mention, danger lurks and their romantic and passionate sojourn in the wilderness may soon be broken by either Maggie’s cousin coming for incriminating papers she took by mistake or Rafe’s stepbrother who is out for revenge.
Maggie’s mother died when she was young and she was basically raised by their housekeeper, Nettie, a woman she adores. She loves to draw and paint, but her father never supported those endeavors. Nevertheless, she carried on and has plans to exhibit her work at a gallery in St. Louis. When her father passed unexpectedly, she decided to travel with her cousin to California to take care of some business interests her father had there, as well as take the time to draw the beautiful vistas along the way for her art show. But when they stop over in the tiny, rough and tumble town of Cougar Creek where her cousin racks up gambling debts, she learns just how unscrupulous he can be when he places her up for auction. As she’s seeking a way to escape her fate, a handsome stranger comes to her rescue, placing a high bid that no one can match. Not knowing what his intentions are, she’s a little afraid of him, but when he treats her kindly and says he’ll take her to the nearest fort so that she can return home as soon as the inclement weather passes, she grows to trust him. Being holed up in his tiny, mountain cabin together soon becomes more than either of them can resist. After all the men in her life let her down, Maggie isn’t sure she ever wants to marry, so she’s open to their relationship taking a passionate turn. She might not be able to resist, though, when Rafe turns out to be everything she could want in a man, but their happiness could be short-lived. Back in Cougar Creek, when Rafe went to the hotel for Maggie’s art satchel, he accidentally took incriminating papers that they know her cousin will want back and he likely won’t stop searching until he finds them.
Maggie is a great heroine who is a nice mixture of sweet and feisty. She’s a strong woman who never gave up on her dreams of becoming an artist despite her father’s derision. She’s kind and caring, looking out for Rafe and giving back full measure to him in every way, and she’s just as protective of him as he is of her. The only thing about her that gave me pause is that I couldn’t figure out how a well-bred, virginal, young lady knew about the sexual things she did. She mentions that Nettie relayed the basics of sex, but it stretches the bounds of credibility to think that would include some of the spicy scenarios she was dreaming and fantasizing about before she and Rafe ever did the deed. Otherwise, though, I really liked her.
Rafe was raised by a stepfather who never truly treated him like a son. He joined the Union army during the Civil War and quickly rose to the rank of an officer. However, an unfortunate incident involving his stepbrother at the end of the war, has left him guilt-ridden. When the rest of his family and his fiancee basically disowned and abandoned him for it, he went west and has been living the life of a hermit in the Colorado mountains. He comes to Cougar Creek to sell his furs and get supplies just as Maggie’s cousin starts auctioning her off. Rafe tells himself not to get involved, but his gentlemanly nature can’t abide seeing a woman being treated that way. He reluctantly buys her himself, intending to merely escort her to the nearest fort to catch the stage as soon as possible. But between the snowstorm, the knowledge that her cousin is likely coming for the papers, and other dangers, they’re delayed by weeks, during which time, their passion reaches a boiling point and he begins to fall for her. But Maggie has plans to travel the world to create and sell her art and doesn’t want a man infringing on her independence. Even if Rafe can convince her he won’t stifle her, word has it that his stepbrother is hot on his trail and out for blood, and until they’ve either faced off over the events of the past or called a truce, he and Maggie will never be safe. Rafe was a great hero, a nice mix of big city gentleman and rough, mountain man who has both a streak of alpha protectiveness and a heart of gold that he pretty much wears on his sleeve once he starts falling for Maggie. He’s been living a lonely tortured life over the incident in his past, and between that and the way he was treated growing up, he doesn’t view himself as lovable. But Maggie changes all that. She helps him come to terms with what happened (for the record, IMHO, he was in the right, even though he understandably feels bad about it), and gives him all the love he deserves.
Rafe’s Redemption was my first read by Jennifer Jakes, and overall, I very much liked it. It’s both sweet and spicy, a combination I love in my romances. Both Rafe and Maggie are very likable and have good character development. A strong emotional connection grows between them, making their relationship sweet and loving, but there’s definitely no skimping on the steam factor. They fit well together as a couple, finding compromises to make things work. I was left with no doubt that they’d have a good, long-lasting romance. The danger posed by her cousin and his stepbrother was nicely woven in, offering a touch of suspense. However, as much as I enjoyed the story and the characters, this wasn’t a perfect book for me. Initially I felt like some of the sensuality was coming from out of nowhere and wasn’t fitting organically into the story. For example, having Maggie lusting for Rafe after he’d just bought her from the auction block and she didn’t really know his intentions yet was a bit much. In fact, the first several times they have lusty thoughts about each other, it felt like it was just being thrown in to meet some unspecified goal for erotic scenes. I can happily say, though, that this did improve, and as the story progressed and they got to know each other better, the emotional connection grew stronger. The other thing that bugged me is that there were a lot of typos, incorrect words, continuity errors, and other editorial issues that were a distraction and often pulled me out of the story, and on occasion, a few more details to help envision a scene better certainly wouldn’t have gone amiss. If only all these things had been smoothed out more, I could definitely have seen this book earning keeper status from me. As is, though, the strength and likability of both the characters and the story held it together for me and helped to make it an enjoyable read that has left me open to trying more of Jennifer Jakes’s work in the future.
Note: This book contains explicit language and sexual content, including anal sex, that could be objectionable to sensitive readers.
ONE SIZZLING HOT HISTORICAL WESTERN! Handle with care ladies, because this is one scorcher of a great story. Rafe McBride makes the perfect hero. Battle worn, shunned by his family, and dealing with the emotional aftereffects of a split-second decision -- not to mention his bent on revenge step-brother -- Rafe hides in the outskirts of Cougar Creek, closed off from society. On a trip into town for supplies, he spots Maggie Monroe, up for sale on the auction block by her gambling addict cousin, Michael, a great anatognist you will love to hate. Maggie is the perfect match for Rafe. A strong woman and talented artist, after the death of her father she decides she's DONE taking orders from men (imagine the conflict now that she's living with a Captain from the Civil War). When these two first meet, sparks fly like the 4th of July. Duty bound to keep her safe, Rafe hides Maggie at his cabin in the mountains. All she wants is to get home to St. Louis and bring the lawyer who is plotting to steal her inheritance to justice. But the winter snow storms don't cooperate, and these two get under each other's skin...in more ways than one. Ms. Jakes did a superb job weaving the emotional scars of her hero and heroine into a highly titilating romance. Non-stop action, the constant threat of danger and a cast of strong secondary characters makes Rafe Redemption a page-turner that is hard to put down. Kudos to Ms. Jakes for a job well done!
Rafe’s Redemption by Jennifer Jakes is a heart melting read. My stomach lurched in the opening scene with Maggie. I couldn’t imagine being a part of a time where men were completely in charge and could do as they wished to women in their family.
Although Rafe wasn’t looking for a woman he did what he thought was right and with his decision his life changed for the better. Maggie might not have wanted to have a man hold control over her again, but she hadn’t met a man of Rafe’s caliber before. Rafe’s secrets and the danger lurking in the shadows for Maggie made for a suspenseful read.
I admired Maggie’s strength as a survivor and a woman who took care of what she said was hers, and Rafe’s stubborn male attitude. These two selfless individuals deserved a break. The tension and sexual passion grew with each passing scene and watching it culminate and the two of them learn to trust one another was an immense joy.
A highly enjoyable read I will pull from my shelf often to revisit like an upbeat, cherished friend. Rafe is one of those near-perfect heroes we all like to read about. He is a delightful mix of rugged strength, a deep code of honor and tender emotions. Ms. Jakes weaves a tale of past betrayals, current dangers and future hopes. Her descriptions of the era, the scenery and the homes are so vivid, one can visualize them. I can't say enough good things about this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The characterizations are great. The story follows through on all the motifs. The story itself is thoughtful and exciting.
Rafe McBride got more than he planned on when he went into town for supplies. When he saw the lovely woman being auctioned off in front of the saloon, he remembered another time, and another woman being mistreated, and he made sure she wouldn’t go to someone who would harm her. He planned on taking her to Fort Union as soon as the blizzard passed. He didn’t need any complications in his life.
Maggie Monroe came west from St. Louis with her cousin, planning to draw the scenery and sell the sketches after showing them at a gallery. She was tired of being controlled by men; first her father, then her cousin Michael. She never realized just how dangerous life would be traveling with Michael, until he lost all their money gambling, and decided to sell her. Maggie is delighted that Rafe isn’t interested, it means she will get home that much sooner. But what they say about best-laid plans proves true, and soon something like friendship and even affection begins to grow between them, as Mother Nature conspires to keep her from leaving.
But there is danger ahead for both of them; Michael is determined to see her dead, and Rafe has secrets that haunt him as well. Can Maggie come to terms with her growing affection for Rafe? Can she convince him he isn’t the evil man he believes himself to be? When evil comes calling, can they face it together and survive?
Rafe’s Redemption is Jennifer Jakes debut, and it is an excellent beginning. I will be honest and say that I rarely read historicals or westerns, but this story caught my attention from the beginning. The world Ms. Jakes has built is a rough one, with men who have survived the War Between the States and who just want to go on with life. It is gritty and shows a part of life in a time when things were simpler, and people were stronger and independent. The characters here are well defined and interesting, from Rafe and Maggie, to Old Tom at the general store, and others we meet along the way.
Maggie Monroe is smart, strong and determined to be independent of any man. Men have controlled her all of her life, and she wants nothing more than her freedom. I loved watching as she discovered that freedom didn’t need to mean she had to be alone. I enjoyed watching her learn to like, then respect, and finally love Rafe. I found her willingness to help others at the cost of her own safety a rare treat.
Rafe McBride is a man running from his past. He is strong, brave and loyal, and, although he did nothing wrong, he believes he is not a good person. He has secrets, and only by facing his past will he become the person that will be free to care for Maggie. I liked watching as he tried so hard to resist temptation and keep Maggie at arms length.
There are several threads weaving through this story, hints of danger and murder with more to come for both Maggie and Rafe. I enjoyed the pace of this story, and the way Ms. Jakes stretched out the anticipation for when these two would finally realize what they felt. There are two very real threats to Maggie and Rafe, when Michael comes searching for Maggie and when Rafe’s past catches up to them, and they have to fight for their lives. The friends of Rafe’s become Maggie’s friends, and I can honestly say I didn’t see the ending of this one coming.
If this book is any indication, Ms. Jakes has a lot of imagination and talent, and I look forward to more from her in the future.
For the past year, Rafe McBride has been the recluse, hiding in the West from a vengeful stepbrother who plots to kill him. He only ventures to civilization for supplies not a woman. But what is he do when he sees the raven haired beauty virtually stripped for the town’s riff raff to bid on? His own sense of right and wrong force him to buy her though the last thing he needs is a dependent woman. He tells her he will return her to St. Louis, her innocence intact while he fervently prays he can beat the impending blizzards to do so before his own desires seduce her to his bed. After years under the stringent rule of her father, Maggie Monroe relishes in her new found independence until she finds herself dragged to the auction block by her gambling addicted cousin who finds her his last money source. Bared before a group of dirty, lustful men bidding for her body, she is bought by the ruggedly handsome stranger who hauls her off to his retreat in the wilderness with promises of freedom as long as she follows his command. All she wants is freedom, not a lover but can she quell her own desires for the gorgeous Rafe before they escalate beyond reason as the snowy winter nights find them alone together? Winter blizzards make Rafe and Maggie realize their attraction to each other is too strong to ignore but will they survive the mortal danger their secrets expose when it stops snowing? Jennifer Jakes debut book is a fast moving erotic western that pulls the reader into Maggie and Rafe’s lives with such force the rising physical attraction between them and its overwhelming tension are so real, the reader feels the electric shock of it and the frustration it causes down to your toes. Their conflicts, both inside and out, definitely make Jennifer Jakes the author to read!
Maggie Monroe and her cousin are at odds with each other. Maggie doesn't know how bad until one day he drags her out in the street and auctions her off to the highest bidder. Rafe is in town from his cabin to get some supplies before the big snowfall, hears the commotion, and can't stand seeing the girl exposed to these men. He takes pity on her, bids for her and wins. To Maggie's relief she'll get free and head back to St Louis, if she can convince Rafe to let her go. On the cold ride to Rafe's cabin Maggie thinks of all kinds of ways to get home. After getting inside the small cabin, Rafe tells her he will take her to the Fort and she can get on home. Or so they think.
I give this book a 5 for several reasons, the characters were well written and worked together well. The setting was impeccable. The reader feels as if they are at the cabin in the snow with Rafe and Maggie. When they are on horseback riding through the snow you feel as if you are riding along with them. You can almost feel the chills from the snow and ice. The story line is intriguing, and drew me in from the first page. I never wanted to put the book down. This is a real page turner.
A must read you will not be disappointed with.

I hesitated between one and two stars so I went with 2, just cuz, I guess. I didn't like it, but I didn't hate it, so maybe that's why. My thought about H (??) throughout the book? Grow a set. Sometimes, there is such a thing as inappropriate guilt. I get why he felt bad about what he had to do, but, here's the key: He. Had. To. Do. It. There was no other option, the alternative was far worse. So, yeah, feel bad, but accept as well. Didn't like the h, the other characters seem like caricatures, and it was just overall unsatisfying.
3.5 Stars. A pretty good debut novel. I liked the relationship between the H/h. The external conflicts were easily resolved. I don't like dragged-out resolutions, but these were maybe too simple. It was erotic, but not really over the top. A nice story.
Blah blah blah. It's been done before and by more adept hands at actually writing a compelling story. It was rushed, but also drawn out and not very romantic. Pretty much a letdown.
Maggie Monroe is betrayed by her gambler cousin and now finds herself on the auction block, being sold to cover his gambling debts. Rafe McBride witnesses the scene and realizes that the only way to save her from the vicious bidders is to buy her himself with the intent to get her on a stage back to St. Louis. A series of blizzards makes distant travel impossible. As they face dangers in the Colorado wilderness and begin to develop feelings for each other, can they overcome the threats to their lives and find love?
Rafe's Redemption has a strong theme on the relationship between Maggie and Rafe. There are many well-written scenes of passion and desire mixed with various dangers the two must face to survive in the wilderness. Readers will find themselves rooting for the two lovers to find their long-lasting love.
well, I am hesitating. I found some parts of this story beautiful, full of drama and wishing to read more, I loved the characters of Rafe and Maggie, their friendship with cecil and Litte Owl, but I didn't appreciate all the interminable hot scenes, sometime without adding a thing to the story. I also found it surprising not to have the army playing a real role in the story.
I love Maggie's journey to freedom and to affirmation and selfesteem, aided in that by Rafe. I love their teasing.
As a reader you always want to find that book that totally captures you, that makes it impossible for you to sleep, that drives you to turn the next page. As a reviewer, you discover that there are far less of those than you want. Of course there is the other end of the spectrum, those that make you cringe.. honestly, I won't review those. If a book doesn't capture my attention, make me want to go on reading (me who is fascinated by the back of cereal boxes and soup cans) then I send a polite note to the publisher or author and let them know that their book isn't of interest to me. No reason to slam a book, no reason to be hurtful and no reason to demean anyone who has the guts to put their work out there. But most books do not fall into an either or category.. most books are not five stars or no stars, most books fall somewhere in between. In the wonderful world of literature there is a vast and varied list of books waiting to be read. And when you find a book that makes you smile, makes you believe, makes you dream or just makes you happy.. then the author has done a wonderful job. She/he has allowed you to escape.
Jennifer Jakes is one of those authors and with Rafe's Redemption she gives us plenty to smile about. Ms Jakes says it all right on her website "True Grit, True Love" she doesn't write stars in your eyes romance.. she writes about people in all their flawed reality. Sure her books are historical fiction but if you look at the individuals, you know you have met someone life them. A predator, a racist, a weak person just trying to survive, a person in power who wants more, an alcoholic.. and yes individuals who have made mistakes and want to become better people. People with dreams and desires, with hopes and beliefs. People who face their darkness and win.. and yes that makes me smile!
Maggie Monroe has been told by her family, her entire life, that she is stupid, lacking talent and not worth all that much (and that's from the father who is supposed to love her), Even upon her father's death he makes sure he knows just how stupid he thinks she is, he leaves her entire fortune in trust with her cousin. But Maggie is determined to survive, to thrive even, she has a plan. She will have a showing of her art and finally escape the clutches of men who desire to control her. Unfortunately, before she does her cousin (you know the smart one who is supposed to manage her trust?) has gambled away all the money he can control and has decided the only way to not lose his life is to auction Maggie off to the highest bidder. And believe me those that can afford her are not what one could be called desirable.
All Rafe McBride wants is to be left alone. He has had enough of a world that would betray him. He has had enough of society women who need to be pampered and catered to.In short he has had enough. But when an obviously innocent woman is being auctioned off, he can not just leave her to those around him. Sure he has escaped to the mountains and chooses to live in isolation. Making his money as a mountain man but he was raised better. He lost it all because he believed in something. So he faces the fact that he must step up once again. After all a day or two and he can return her to her own world...*snort* raise your hands if you believe that is going to happen..
Maggie is way more than Rafe ever imagined. She is stubborn and proud. She is determined to not be a burden and makes his life a better place. When given a choice between her freedom and helping others, Maggie puts herself last and makes sure that those less fortunate than her can be safe. Her choices lead to the two of them being stranded in the mountains for the winter and allows them to discover that there is more to both of them than meets the eye.
I really enjoyed this book. It offered a reprieve from the dark and edgy suspense books I have been reading lately. It takes me back to when romance was just fun.. LOL, I know that was yesterday but still.. But honestly, this wasn't a dark and dangerous book and it certainly didn't have an in your face attitude. No scathing remarks, no snarky rejoinders.. all the things I love.. but instead it was a warm fuzzy. A reprieve from the darkness that has enveloped so much of Romance writing today. I know there are plenty of authors out there that offer this same treat and I thank them. Sometimes you just want a good book. Ms Jakes writes a wonderful story and uses little but our imaginations to power it. Thank you.

*Copy from publisher for an honest opinion Review on ramblingsfromthischick.blogspto.com and booknerdloleotodo.blogspot.com In this Historical Western Rafe McBride is a rough- around –the- edges -cowboy. He goes into Cougar Town to buy some supplies when he stumbles upon an auction. On the auction block is Maggie Monroe. Maggie has always yearned to be her own person and have her independence. Unfortunately after her father’s death she is left in the hands of her cousin-Michael. Michael is scum and dangerous man. He only cares about drinking and gambling. When his funds run low he has the brilliant idea that Maggie to put Maggie for sale.
Rafe loves his solitude and wants nothing to do with Maggie. Although he takes her to his home he makes it clear to her that he is sending her on her way as soon as possible. Maggie is scared of Rafe and generally very distrusting of men. As a woman she has never been able to make her own decisions and choices. They come to an agreement; he will help get her home to St. Louis. She wants to salvage whatever is left of her inheritance. Because of unforeseeable situations Rafe and Maggie are not able to get her on the next train to St. Louis. As they are forced to spend more time together Maggie comes to realize that Rafe is a good guy and that unlike all the other men in her life, she can trust Rafe. Rafe begins to develop very strong feelings for Maggie as he appreciates her spunk and that she is able to stand up to him. Besides their feelings for each other they have to deal with the threats that loom over them. Michael realizes that Maggie has papers that incriminate him and he is searching for them and Maggie. We learn that Rafe has his own set of enemies. Although Rafe lives in “uncivilized land he was originally from St. Louis. He deals with the guilty feels he has about killing one of his stepbrothers and the abandonment from his mother. The author touches upon a lot of great issues. She describes the uncivilized lands and the rough weather. She also explains the dark side to the army and the treatment that they give to “deserters and indigenous people of the area. She also highlights that women are not considered citizens but property of their spouse. I really liked that the author addressed these issues and actually made marriage and what it means to each character a part of their conversations.
This was a very good book. The characters were very personable; they reflected aspects of society and had intense chemistry. She also used supporting characters to add conflict or to enlighten the reader about the time period. Very recommendable!
Rafe he's rough around the edges, "Rafe slammed his cup onto the stove. "Miss Monroe, I never intended to keep you." His gruff voice suggested she'd offended him. "Believe me, a woman is the last thing I want." Sometimes you can't help where certain body parts fall when you're asleep, "she sighed again, her arm dropping forward to rest on his thigh. Christ. Two inches to the left and she'd be cupping his co**. He grabbed her hand and pulled it around his waist to keep her from falling off Moses." Rafe I believe has met his match in Maggie, "damn it all," he whispered. Couldn't she just follow orders? "Stubborn, frustrating, female." But Rafe he's caring, "oh, God," he whispered, wrestling the blanket tangled around their bodies. "Are you all right, Maggie?" He rolled off her. "Are you hurt." His big hands roamed her body. "Tell me where I've hurt you." I think the man has been alone so long he's not sure what to do with another person, "no, there's not." He took his food over to the hearth. "I can't stand to be crowded, woman." His voice held a desperate edge. "I like being alone." Rafe he has no issues with nudity, "so were you awhile ago. I didn't complain." And he wasn't complaining now. The firelight turned her shirt transparent. "You don't want me to get my stitches all wet, do you?" And he's a possessive man, "because you're mine, damn it." The words exploded from him." Maggie she'll make a good mother, and Rafe while recovering that boy is like a naughty child, "I can't stay in bed forever, Maggie. Unless you want to get naked and join me." He grabbed her and waggled his eyebrows. "Then I wouldn't complain one bit." I really liked this story and I'm hoping to read more by this author.
This is not my usual genre -historical romance- but I do love a good story and that's exactly what this author has written. Set in a post civil war western environment this new to me author has written a very sexy tale of love and betrayal. Maggie is a well brought up young lady whose father has recently died and left her and her inheritance in the care of her cousin but he's a no good who tricks her and then offers her up for auction to pay off his debts. Maggie is terrified of these wild mountain men and doesn't quite know what to think when Rafe Mcbride steps up and buys her. Luckily for her Rafe is a man of honour who promises to get her back to St Louis and civilisation. Rafe attempts to take her to the nearest fort but the cruel weather forces them back. Trapped by a blizzard Maggie finds the enigmatic Rafe very appealing and Rafe is fascinated by the sexy hellion in his keeping. Maggie is still in danger and the past that haunts Rafe is about to catch up. These two people are set on a collision course and there may be cold outside but there's heat inside! A truly fabulous story by Ms Jakes! Loving the Rocky Mountain setting and historical background. A tortured and very hot hero meets a young woman full of untapped passion. Lots of action and really nasty bad guys. Great supporting characters and a story that grips. Fantastic world building and scene setting. Highly sensual and a great plot. This is a well written book and I look forward to reading more from this author. This is historical romance but not erotica
Ever read a book that makes you go "bleh, it was ok"? This was one of those type of books that I didn't hate, but I didn't overly enjoy. It's easily forgettable, and I doubt I would be eager to pick up another book by this author. There seem to be something missing from the plot and Author's writing style. First 1/3 of the book held potential for a really great story, but instead of progressing the theme and enticing the reader with engaging scenes between hero and heroine and the "bad guys", we were given pages after pages of their inner lust for one another before the author started with actual sex scenes. The bad guys were killed off pretty quickly between all their love making leaving the reader go "that's it?" I felt her style of writing left the reader with little imagination toward what was going on between the hero and heroine because everything was lay out for you. I was not able to form a emotional attachment to any of the characters because they were all underdeveloped. In the end I did alot of skimming and really didn't care what happens to the H/H.
This was an enjoyable erotic romance (American historical), but not very original. The heroine's evil gay brother sells her to the highest bidder to pay off a gambling debt. Rafe, the hero, buys Maggie to save her from stinky backwoods men. He's the only clean, handsome, noble guy in the territory. Plus he has a huge, hard penis. Yay!
The mental lusting is hilariously dirty and over the top. I liked it. Don't look here for realism--he's got a boner in a snowstorm, and she's a bj-savant virgin, eager for anal. An okay read with hot sex scenes and decent characters.
Hated the beginning--that auction thing just didn't work and the author surely could have come up with a better device for having the hero come to the heroine's rescue to begin the story. However, I am glad I didn't give up at the point because the rest of the book was pretty good. This book was engrossing and exciting with both characters having really heinous enemies who needed to be dealt with before the romance had a chance. Cut out all the over preoccupation with lust and sex, that went on and on and on and detracted from the story, and this would have been a much better book.
I like this kind of plot; war, escape, killing, savage places, violent people, survival, revenge, redemption, wild weather, animal characters, different races and a big part of romance. It requires a talented author to put everything in a story. What bothered me a bit here is the use of sexual slang, I think its vulgar, or maybe it's because of the setting? or I'm just too sensitive haha ^,* I like sexual encounters but if it will eat a big part of the pages it gets boring. Maybe I will try some other Jake's books I know I will like it somehow.
