This book is awful! The author uses extremely short chapters (almost James Patterson short) and the plot is choppy and confusing because of it.
The main character is boring and unlikeable. She's described as perfect with long, flowing (and of course, never frizzy) blonde hair and perfect crystal blue eyes. She moves to Paragon Island, into the house where a murdered girl (Chloe) lives. The dead girl's best friend (Brielle) immediately runs over and becomes best friends with Skyla for some unknown reason. She also gets Skyla an instant spot on the cheerleading squad and instant invites to all parties (and there are a lot.. this girl parties like a college kid). Brielle also immediately starts dating Skyla's nose-picking, flatulent, disgusting brother (Drake) as well.
Right away, Skyla meets the dead girl's boyfriend, Logan, and his cousin Gage. The two boys are described as the most perfect good looking boys in the world and both immediately fall in love with her and start fighting over her. There is absolutely no development of a relationship, Skyla and Logan just immediately are in love and start making out all the time. This author definitely wastes no time on buildup for that first kiss, they're making out on a pool table within pages of meeting.
With so many better options out there, this one isn't even worth the 99 cents the author is charging.
Am I the only one who thinks Skyla is a slut? Even that, I could forgive, but she's shallow too! She's a shallow slut! In the beginning of the book, she already shows indecision about Gage (awesome) and Logan (sucks). She is unbelievably stupid and ignorant. By the time, she figures out all the "mysteries" in the book, I have already figured out all the other ones she's still mulling over. Ugh. Having to see everything from her point of view is incredibly disgusting. My eyes hurt after finishing this book because I had rolled them so many times. It's disgusting. (I know I said that already) And besides that, she has commitment issues. SPOILER ALERT: By the fifth book, Skyla still HASN'T made a decision. Is that Moore's way of keeping me in suspense? Because right now, I feel like burning a stack of copies of Ethereal. If you think I'm being hard on her try READING that crap. It's ridiculous. If I had the energy to go grab some of the revolting things Skyla has said and thought I would. But I fear my eyeballs may melt from the literary acid spewing from that book.
One of the worst book I' ve ever read and that's saying something because I've read awful books but this tops those books. The reason I dislike this book so much was because it was plot less all the book was about Skyla thinking two guys are hot and not knowing which one hotter and which one she wants to sleep with. All the characters ever thought about or talked about was sex having sex or thinking about having it.I seriously don't even know why the author tried to add a paranormal aspect to the book she should of just made it about stupid teenagers sleeping around and girls with low self esteem. I Hate YA novels that focus 80% of the book about sex. If I wanted to read about sex I would have read a Erotica or PR novel which have way better written plots and sex scene then what YA authors come up with. PLEASE YA AUTHORS STOP FOCUSING ON THE RELATIONSHIP ASPECT OF A BOOK TO MUCH AND FOCUS MORE ON THE PLOT.
Another thing I disliked was that Skyla had no backbone she listened to everything Logan said and hanged around him like a dam puppy. Idk about y'all but I hate characters that come off needy and who need to constantally reasured that they are important and that they are loved by the MH (main hero)
Bah waste of .99 cents
P.S. did not finish could only get 3/4 of the way done. So if the book got better after 3/4 of reading it idk and I don't care.
Ok so I am on the fifth book of this series and let me tell you granted by the other reviews yes the first book is a bit slow but stick with this series because the others are absolutely fantastic! I can't believe people are complaining about this book I am really enjoying the series and I really don't want it to end! The books are also fairly cheap and I think that the short chapters are good because when you finish one you instantly want to read another! I understand for you angel lovers out there this book isn't that much about angels so if you think it is I suggest you read the book open mindedly because there isn't that much angel literature. So if you are an open minded reader and want a different and unique read with a bit of romance then this series is definitely for you! Also if you don't like the first book and don't want to read the rest then no harm done because the first book is FREE!
P.S. Thank you for writing such an amazing collection of books!
This book was FREE for kindle on Amazon, and a colleague had recommended it to me based on the fact that I occasionally read YA fantasy romance.
Based on reading the book, I assume the reason they could offer it for such a reduced price is because it was written by a teenager and they didn’t bother hiring an editor. (Disclaimer I have no idea if this is true this is merely based on the fact that the quality of writing in this book makes Stephanie Meyer look like William Shakespeare).
In addition to being a weird rip-off of the Mortal Instruments/Vampire Diaries/Twilight (and probably many other YA novels I haven’t yet read) the book is riddled with grammatical errors, full of plot inconsistencies, and is challenging to follow due to jerky, uneven writing. The characters are pretty much 2-dimensional stereotypes, many of which are simply not believable. Oh yes, and there are some randomly-placed weirdly religious/moral overtones woven throughout the plot (score some more points for Twilight).
That said, I do confess to reading the whole book in 4 hours straight because I had to know how it ended. I think if someone bothered to do a second draft of this where they polished up the writing, filled in the plot holes, gave the characters more depth, and changed some of the details a bit so that it didn’t so closely resemble YA fan-fic, this would have the potential to be a decent book. The steaminess is there, the super powers are cool, and they hint at a deeper mythology and some good over-arching story-lines/mysteries. Doubtful this will happen, however, since apparently in its current, shoddy draft format, it has already been developed into an 8 book series.
** Synopsis with mild spoilers ahead: In this book a girl named “Skyla Messenger (nope, not making this up) moves to Forks a small rainy town in Washington state. Elena Gilbert Skyla, is blonde and very beautiful. She is invited to join the high school cheerleading squad without so much as a tryout and then is picked on by a trio of jealous mean-girls due to the fact that she immediately catches the attention of both Salvatore brothers blond-haired Logan and dark-haired, brooding Gage Oliver (cousins who live together like brothers). Let it also be noted that Damon Salvatore Gage has a large black raven at his command who often spies on Elena Skyla. Skyla falls in love-at-first-sight with Jace Logan, who is so hot he resembles a hyper-masculine angel. On top of this fabulous supernatural love triangle, add in mysterious parentage, an evil stepfather, a slutty best friend, and a creepy step brother and you’ve pretty much hit YA pay-dirt.
I think I'm way too much of a cynic to read YA novels. I just started to read Ethereal and I can tell it will have a bunch of cliches. So far we have our heroine feeling an instant connection to a gorgeous, mysterious, rich guy. She is a virgin and he used to be a player. What's up with that? Why do all heroines have to be virgins? It's the 21st century and authors still keep sending the message that if a girl is not a virgin she is a slut. Whatever. Oh, and there is another gorgeous guy who probably likes her too so I'm sure a love triangle will develop soon. Again, why the need to add a love triangle? Even with all these initial red flags I will give Ethereal a try because the writing is well done. *REVIEW UPDATE* Nope. I can't do it. Besides the myriad of cliches in this book the plot doesn't make any sense. People keeping secrets just for the sake of having a plot doesn't work for me. There has to be a reason why the secret is being kept and I couldn't fathom why Skyla's father kept her heritage from her and I honestly don't feel like reading the rest of the book to find out. Also Skyla's infatuation with Logan is just too annoying. I find Ethereal too silly for me but I guess it's perfect for younger readers.
Ethereal is a book that quickly establishes itself with vivid characters, snappy descriptions and pacing that holds the readers attention enough to keep turning pages. The plot's supernatural aspects as well as mundane ones ensnared me so quickly I read half the book within two hours and finished it not long after.
Ethereal has an irreverent tone in both narration and dialogue that is entertaining to read while reaffirming Skyla's general disposition. The tragedy and upheaval ingrained in her back story has left her surly, defiant and sarcastic in ways of coping with her unhappiness. Skyla didn't strike me as an atypical teen in that respect and shared her frustration towards various situations that arose throughout the book.
The supernatural premise that will fuel the series is introduced enough to make readers aware of what they can expect while leaving mysteries to be explored later on. There's genuine appeal and novelty to the mythos that finds ways to distinguish itself from other series in a similar vein. Already I'm fascinated to see where the story is leading and what will come of the characters in it.
First of all I want to say, anyone who has been in an abusive relationship probably might want to skip this book. Parts of it can be triggering (the review might be triggering). It contains men trying to control women through speech and gestures, as well as objectification. It also has implied rape and dehumanization. Also on top of all this a huge topping of abelism!
The men in this book like to violate a woman's bodily automomy on multiple levels and it's shown as being "sexy" and "romantic". It's dangerous is what it is. This book has zero romance in it. It's all what I like to call "lustmance". Lustmance is when the characters fall in love with each other seemingly instantly and all they do together is make out. Nothing romantic goes on. No little in jokes, no little nice things. Just "I MUST see him" and then sexy time. That's IT. 90% of this book is just them having excuses to make out and the story (what little there is of it) suffers for it.
Also this book is highly misogynistic. It LOVES to have women at each others throats and call them "bitches" all the time. The author even pulls the "I MUST be jealous of other women who are even LOOKING at my man." Not only that on a few occasions the main two guys fight over Skyla as if she were "a stake" a piece of meat. Even the main character is about as stupid as a brick. She does things to seemingly try and get herself killed. She has no backbone and everyone has to save her. Not only all the times women have been called "crazy" in this.
As for controlling, the men like to do this neck grabby thing. Having been near borderline abuse I know that this is the place men grab women to control them, like people pick up cats and kittens. It's disgusting and horrible and not romantic at all. Not to mention Skyla is pinned up against a pool table and a wall on two occasional. All of this is shown to be sexy! When it's just men dominating women. Especially when the main character is talkling about "I don't object. I don't resist." If it was romantic why are you even thinking about resisting and objecting?
As for the implied rape, well that comes in later
Not to mention this book has tropes out the wazoo. There's the "We won't tell you life saving tips about your special powers" trope, the anime trope of "three hateful female students" and a few more.
With that out of the way, what about the characters?
Considering all the characters were 2D cutouts, really not a whole lot characterization. All of the characters were stereotypes.
The plot? Honestly it was hard to find the plot in all this. The plot comes in SUPER late into the book, so the hook is lost. Even then you have to actually be searching for it. All the plot twists are transparent. And honestly, I found very little plot. The scenes jump from one to another and all of them are just to get Skyla and Logan together in some way, that's it. Of course when they get together all they do is make out. The rest of events just seem convient. "Oh a party is happening, load up into the car, oh noes stuff is happening!" Nothing is super explained at all.
So we have 2D characters, tropes, and a weak plot that only happens by sudden jumps. Also, I couldn't help but notice the names Chloe and Bar(r)on. Both names are in the anime Sousei no Aquarion, which is of course about angels.
Look up the word horrid and the cove of this book is next to it, as in DO NOT READ IT. It’s useless, stupid, idiotic, screwed –up and a waste of time. I will not be reading any more books in this series.
FIRST Being a fan of all things angel I can certifiably say that this book does not represent anything angel what-so-ever. The characters are poor, the story line is horrible, the chapters are too short and make almost no sense, and the writing in general is all wrong. Absolutely everything is wrong with this book.
SECOND I really can’t tell who the bad guy is, the counts trying to kill her or her dad cos at some point I think it’s her dad. And who the hell is she in love with because I think she falls in love with any guy who bothered to look her way (Unfaithful much) she was really easy. And what the hell was with her and the dead girl. And is it just me or is it that she seems to have issues with everyone in the book at some point or the other? And what type of a boyfriend is Logan because you want a book so bad you openly flirt and kiss another girl in front of your girlfriend. That’s just stupid an fifty levels.
THIRD Y’all did read that she was an angel because I really thought I imagined that. You can run really fast and are super strong, but at the first sign of danger you scream like a little girl. Really? I’m really glad that she isn’t a guardian angel, if she was yours, you’re better of putting a gun to your head because you’d be officially screwed.
And LAST… Was there really any suspense or action in this book? I couldn’t tell because it was like three pages then she got saved. And then she goes on to feel all shaken up cos she was taken for a few minutes. I read books where the heroine is tortured and almost killed and they don’t do half the things she did when they escape. Put her in a dipper and call her baby, that’s what she is.
even if you're bored and this is the last book on the planet, go watch some cartoons on T.V, at least you'd know it's meant to have no plot and be completly stupid.( Be sure to beat up the friend who recomended this book to you):p
This has got to be one of the worst books I have ever read. I finished merely so I could have all the ammunition for this review. Here goes...
I find this entire book to be ridiculously superficial. Not a single character, event or location was described or developed effectively. And if there were descriptions, they were of the most stupid things such as the fog. What is this author's fixation with fog? How many times do we have to read about the way in which fog can envelope a person, wrap a person, absorb a person? That was B.O.R.I.N.G. However, when it came to putting a bit more detail into an action scene, forget it. I was so confused by the suspense scenes such as when they were driving on the highway and almost got hit by the oncoming car. I had to read it about four times in order to get even a basic understanding of what the author was trying to say....
"I can't look. I go to cover my eyes but as I do I notice the cars along side us are no longer racing in the other direction, the people in them frozen in horror as they observe what's about to happen.
The truck however is still moving, flying in slow motion over the oncoming traffic as pass it - obnoxiously slow. Logan takes out his camera and takes a picture of the men in the vehicle.
Then the world speeds up again and we're traveling at a normal velocity on the open stretch of road ahead as if nothing had happened at all.
I look over at the truck bed and catch Gage hopping back inside, settling in.
It was him - Gage. He carried us over. Super human strength must be their shared gift."
I'm serious. What happened here? I was so lost! Did the truck amazingly start to hover over the other cars and was it going super fast or super slow? I get that whatever happened it was Gage that did it but see what I'm saying? The lack of details and precise description leaves the reader stranded in what is supposed to be a very suspenseful moment. Instead, I felt as if I missed a crucial detail.
Also, a lot of authors these days are getting a little too carried away in their cliche kiss swoons. This author is no exception and I literally was laughing when Skyla and Logan kiss...
"It's an explosion of emotion when his lips connect with mine. A love song, and every glorious sunset I've ever seen all rolled into one. We could write a poem with the dull ache of our passion."
or
"He leans in slow and sears me with a kiss. The world shifts, the lavender sky spreads its wings over the two of us like a blessing."
Oh my gosh. Puhleeze! This book is chock full of that crap. Did she think she was being poetic? What ever happened with just telling a story!
Not to mention the amount of type-o's I found in this book. Any properly published book should be absolutely 100% free of type-o's or else the author looks so desperate to get it to market, she can't even wait to have it edited. Offensive.
The storyline is a total has-been. Very un-inspired, boring and way too racy for a teenager. All these kids do is party, drink, have sex and make out not to mention lie, sneak out and disregard authority. I found not a single thing redeeming about this entire book - just laughed my way through it as page after page exhibited sheer brain-numbing waves of over-written, drivel. This book was not written by an author who had an amazing idea; it's written by an author who is trying to fly on the coattails of an over saturated market of teenie bopper paranormal love stories. And much like 75% of other authors doing this exact same thing, what was produced is a waste of time.
I seriously can not believe there are like 10 books in this series. Just the thought of reading another 10 books along these same lines makes me want to rip my eyes out of my own head. I am as far removed from a Twilight fan as one can get, but Twilight is a classic compared with this book. And that's my take.
I have really enjoyed the wonders of technology that make things available to us today. I love the fact that I can access great stories that have not been published through the traditional route through Amazon. I try to take a few chances on these books because I know it will help those writing and because on several occasions I have found a really good book. Ethereal falls into this category.
Skyla is a fun lead character. She reminds me a little of a younger Merit from the Chicagoland vampire series. She is strong, independent and doesn’t let anyone or anything get in the way of what she wants.
I found the mythology behind this paranormal to be very interesting. The underlying idea is that there are different factions of angels that have different sorts of abilities. The concept is that there is a certain faction that can’t be allowed to be together because they will produce strong offspring and will throw off the balance of things. This is quite different from most of the angel mythology I have read thus far. The human aspect that has been brought into the story intrigued me.
I have to say though that I am definitely a fan of Gage. I can’t wait to see what happens in the later books as his character becomes more prominent. I really think Logan is somewhat selfish, at least in an unintentional manner. He strikes me as the type of person that will never be really able to fully grasp putting someone else above his needs and wants fully. I will look forward to seeing what will happen with the triangle in this series in the future.
Overall I give this book a 5/5. Addison does an incredible job of making the world of angels seem possible and developing a set of characters that can be related to.
I was excited to read this book after seeing all the great chatter about it from the World Literary Cafe's Twitter team last week. Overall, I agree that Moore has a good base for an interesting story and is on the way to writing an intriguing YA series. The writing itself, however, needs some work and I'm glad I was able to download the book for free.
It seems like Moore was so anxious to force a relationship between Skyla and Logan that she skimmed over a lot of the background, including why the reader should care about what happens to any of them in the first place. She didn't spend enough time developing the characters past a 2-dimensional stereotype and her rush to get to the make out scenes made them comical instead of hot-n-heavy. Moore also needed to spend more time on editing her work before making it available - there are so many typos throughout the text that I needed to stop several times in order to re-read a section for it to make sense.
All in all, it could be the great start to a great series if Moore can slow down enough to do her story justice.
Starting this book I thought I would love it or at least like it for that matter, but unfortunatelly that wasn't the case. I did not like this book and it's mostly because of the characters.
Skyla is the new girl in town. She moves in the house of a dead girl Chloe and soon takes over her life. Chloe's best friend soon becomes Skyla's same with Chloe's boyfriend. But Skyla has a secret (of course she does), she can hear people thoughts. And once she realizes that Logan, her new isnta boyfriend/love does too she finally seeks the answers she was never able to get.
It should have been an intersting story, and maybe the plot is kind of interesting, with the angels and all, but when you can't stand the characters the plot doesn't matter anymore.
Where to begin?
Skyla: she was so unworthy of the main character title. Seriously. She was jealous of a dead girl. And I don't mean jealous "I am afraid he might still have feelings for her", I mean "I am going to steal him from you, you stupid dead bitch, back off now" jealous. Sick, right? The BFF Brielle was also a disaster waiting to happen, she befriends Skyla instantly, gets her Chloe's empty spot in the cheerleading team, gets her in all the cool parties and hooks up with Skyla's disgusting step-brother.
And as much as I hate insta friendship, I hate insta love even more. And this book had a double insta love. Logan and Gage, cousins and the most perfect and handsome boys Skyla has ever seen (her words not mine) both fall head over heels for her (can't really see why) in a blink of an eye. Of course Skyla has the hots for both but picks one so she can have someone to make out with. And boy do the make out. From the very first party.
Ok, let me say now that I did not finish this book. So maybe it gets better by the end, and seeing how so many people have read it and liked it, I think it possibly does, but I just couldn't read anymore and simply don't care. So the review above is for the first half which I did read. I hope other angel books are not like this one.
Ms. Moore brings an entirely new and fresh voice to the angel genre... and I liked this ever so much better than Fallen or Hush,Hush. Her main character, Skyla is witty and smart. She doesn't fall into the weak, whiny MC category that we have seen so much of lately. The storyline is unique, the dialogue is funny. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal read!
Why do you ask? How about when she says "God--I think I'm in love" to the guy she literally JUST MET maybe 12 hours before? Or the sudden acquisition of a power to read people's minds? Or the sappy paragraphs long goop fest over the set of abs? Or what about how she calls the son of her step-father her "half brother" when he's EXACTLY her age? (That's her STEP-brother - her half-brother means he shares one parent with her).
Abso-f@#$ing-lutely not.
I'll share all the sappy highlights I made of this mess for you to giggle over.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again I am just too cynical and jaded to read YA. It’s just not my style and even when written really well (Twilight) I just find things irk me too much. So I should have been prepared, but I did not realize I was reading a YA book when I started Ethereal, so I am going to assume that the issue I with me not the book.
I think the plot was original, and really good; but the story and character development was a bit off. It just didn’t seem genuine to me, and the story development was lacking follow through. I also think that this book should have been twice as long the descriptive narrative was not very engaging and there didn’t seem to be enough continuity (on one page they're at her house & next thing I know, they are at school.... but there was not flow to it and there seemed to be something missing like bits of the story were left dangling). There were a couple of spelling/grammar issues as well, but nothing a good editor couldn’t fix. That being said, the book has HUGE potential. If the characters are developed a bit more and some of the issues are resolved, it could be amazing.
I always try to keep reviews spoiler free so can’t get into too much detail, but given the ‘abilities that some of these citizens of Paragon have, some of the issues they are facing and the situations they find themselves in are baffling to me. How do you grow up with an ability to read minds and never look into the ‘why & how of that???? I also wanted to smack the characters at times but I have to remind myself these are 16 year olds I’m reading about. Yes, they are immature, reckless, silly and un/emotional - but at 16 it’s allowed. I remember being that age and feeling that way, even putting myself in the risky situations Skyla puts herself in. I recognize that.. I just don’t like reading about it. And along that line, I just find it icky to read about 16 year olds having sex, or about how the ‘headboard was banging against the wall. It’s just not something I enjoy reading about. Let me also state for the record that I really hope she falls for Gage and leaves that slimy dog, Logan. I really don’t like him and I kinda think I was supposed to. I found myself not so much rooting for the happy couple, but feeling happy about some of the challenges they are facing... but I don’t think that was the desired effect.
I will be reading the next book and already bought it. I think the author has great potential and this could be a great series. and even thought I cringe at the idea of reading another YA book, I think this one deserves another chance.
Okay... so I'm not very impressed with this book. Skyla is just plain stupid. I mean if you just found out your some super rare blooded Angel wouldn't you want to know everything about it? Instead Skyla is so obsessed with Logan that all she can do is follow him around like a love sick stalker. She is seriously crazy and kind of creepy.
I hate when authors make characters purposely keep secrets that you know in reality they would NEVER keep just to prolong the story and try and add some kind of depth to it. Well this is what Moore does and it just makes me hate Skyla even more. She reminds me of Nora except (and this I could not believe) I hate her even more than Nora. I thought no one could be as stupid and frustrating as Fitzpatrick's Nora but nope, Moore was able to surpass her on that.
And what in the world was the whole neighbors boyfriend killing scene that sends her to a psych ward for a night that has NOTHING AT ALL to do with the story (which is why I don't consider it a spoiler). I basically wasted a good ten minutes of my life reading the most out of place and bizarre scene that had no bearing whatsoever on the story other than to prove what I thought from the beginning, Skyla is bat shit crazy and not in a "funny this is an amusing character" way but in a "holy shit no one in their right mind would be friends much less date this psycho bitch" way.
There are six books in this series so far and I don't think I will be wasting anymore of my life reading them. Skyla was stupid and annoying and Logan was your typical beautiful boy who is supposed to be mysterious but just ends up being creepy and all the other characters are just not interesting enough to pay attention to and the love triangle she is creating is just going to be over the top annoying. Nope, this is definitely for the birds for me.
If Angels like the Celestra and Levatio really walk the Earth -- we are in good hands :)
(just wanted to share my Amazon review)
I am IN LOVE with this book.
I love that this book is unapologetically spiritual: it deals with God, Angels, divine inspiration and intervention, the ethereal realm, and the dichotomy between good and evil in ALL of us, without being preachy or evangelical (I even liked that JC was never mentioned lol).
This is the FIRST time I've ever connected to the female protagonist in a YA novel. They're usually unreal or have an underwhelming personality. But Skyla Messenger is so me -- her vibrating personality, persistance, and saracastic sense of humor remind me of so many young women I know. And I liked that she had to struggle to learn how to use her powers instead of her just having them magically work all of a sudden. And I totally identify with her decision not to bend when it comes to a certain "issue" with Logan lol.
And of course I would be remiss not to mention the heart of this book: LOGAN & GAGE I mean there are just no words for their powerful and astonishingly beautiful spirits; and their unabashed devotion to Skyla's safety and security. But I like that the author also gave them very human characteristics like competitiveness and jealousy.
If you have a boyfriend/husband, reading this book makes you want to turn to him and ask "Why can't you be more like Logan and Gage?" lol
I've already bought books 2 and 3, and will begin reading them immediately. This awesome experience is worth so much more than the $0.99 it cost.
Thank you Addison Moore for bringing this into fruition and sharing Paragon with us; and I thank "The Master" for bringing this book into my life :)
Ethereal was a fun read. I downloaded the sample chapter with the expectation of checking out a new author's work and adding it to my growing TBR Pile, and was hooked immediately. I quickly bought it and pretty much devoured it in one big gulp.
A few grammatical typos aside--all things I was more than willing to look past to focus on the hot boys--this was a well written story. The angel plot is tweaked to make it her own, and has lots of added twists and turns that I didn't expect. The mystery surrounding the death of Logan's ex, and the girl who is now haunting Skyla, is intriguing.
The fast pace kept me reading just 'one more chapter,' and the love triangle was perfect. I adore Logan, but am completely Team Gage! I cannot wait for Tremble to see if Gage and Skyla get together!
Fun secondary characters, lush setting details, and sneaky author twists meant to keep you guessing make this a five star recommendation in my book--especially at that price. Great Job, Addison! Now hurry up and release Tremble!!
I found this book to be...an acquired taste. The content is really love it or hate it, and I LOVEEEED it. This was sooooooo good.
I personally am a sucker fairy and angel books, but this was kind of an interesting twist on angels.
The book is about Skyla messenger, who's father and her can both read minds, and when her father dies her mom remarries and they move to paragon island off of washington from L.A. On paragon island, she learns that she is a Celestra, or a very high rank of angel that have forever been hunted by another race of angels, the countenance, or the counts. Then she meets Logan and his cousin, who are also angels. She falls for Logan, and blah blah blah.
One thing I found a little, well, interesting or confusing was that she never wondered or asked by her and her father could read minds...I mean, I loved the book, but it confused me.
Overall, I really loved everything about the book, the plot, the whole concept of what the author was going for, and I loved all the character too. Specifically Gage. SEXY.
BOOK LOVE!!! I didn't know what to expect from this book, but I'm so glad I took a chance on it because it paid off in a big way. Not only was the plot interesting, but the writing was beautiful. I hope the author plans on putting out the next in the series really soon because she left me wanting more. Excellent read. I highly recommend.
Whoever likes this book really, REALLY needs to take a second look at it.
So I got it for free via Amazon Kindle, and at first I was like, "Whoo! A free book!" But then I did something akin to this number:
ohgodwhy.
This book is just a horrible mess of why's and what's and how the holy hell did that even happen? The author certainly didn't think about logic - or grammar (there were more than a few mistakes repeated over and over again) and it drove me to the point of insanity.
So our story begins with moody teen Skyla brooding about how utterly mean her family is. Her father has died in a car accident, and she just can't get over it. Okay, fair enough, kids take longer to get over the death of parents. I believe it's been over a year, but I could be wrong. Anyway, her mother marries a wicked stepfather new guy, and Skyla hates him with a passion of a thousand suns.
But Skyla has the ability to read people's minds. And she can't figure out why. So the family moves into Paragon, Washington, and Skyla, ex Los Angeles-girl, is happy for the dreary scenery because it fits her mood.
Blah blah blah, moving in happens, she meets people, and finds out the girl who previously lived in the house was murdered. Le gasp! And her new acquaintance was BFF's with her.
So a whole lot of hum drum happens, and Skyla's invited to the cheer squad to fill the dead girl's place (what the hell happened to try outs?), and the Queen Bitches of the school hate her for it. They're really drama-filled and the total cliche for how Queen Bees are for high school, but whatever. I can excuse this.
But no. Skyla meets the most drop dead sexy guy in school everybody is pining after and he falls in love with her and she with him. And HE IS A MIND READER TOO.
The plot proceeds to get more convoluted and really confusing. Nothing is actually explained, except for factions of angels, and Skyla just bats her eyes at him and goes, "Okay!"
No disbelief. No anything. She just accepts it because Logan is so goddamn hot and omg I hope he kisses me again. Oh, and Skyla and Logan are both Celestra - the most powerful and rare and they can time travel and read minds.
Hello, Mary Sues.
Things get worse in the logic department. Things begin to attack Skyla, and her preferred method of defending herself is standing around and screaming and hoping somebody will save her.
When she gets caught making out with Logan in her bedroom, she only has to pull out the, "My dad is dead you bitch!" to her mother card for her to instantly forgive her and not care. Skyla's basically free to do whatever the hell she feels like when she feels like it.
Oh, and when she gets kidnapped by the people who want to experiment on her for Evil Deeds, Skyla manages to escape and runs around, looking for an exit, but fades away and appears in The Sexy Logan's arms. The author then proceeds to throw an event that was never alluded to - EVER - in our faces. It's called a Treble, an alternate reality event, and after Skyla tells Logan where they were taken, she fades away and wakes back up underground.
So don't worry, folks. Skyla's too weak to save herself from anything, so she bent the rules of time and space to have her boyfriend save her.
Oh, and she's a shallow bitch. She leads on Logan's brother, while Logan locks lips with another girl to get his ex's diary, Skyla just turns to Logan's brother - Gage (who's equally as Sexy and OMG he should kiss me too) and decides to kiss him and have a hot makeout session.
Also, she decides to go back in time to pick a fight with Logan's dead ex-girlfriend because she's jealous. No, really. She does it. And then she keeps trying to fix her mistakes and makes the entire situation a whole lot worse, only she doesn't really do it because she's sorry.
This book is bad, I don't even know why I finished it, and it's just written like a very bad novel. Really.
Don't bother reading it, it's two-dimensional, flat, and you can tell the author never received any critique at all on the matter. Your money - and time - are better spent elsewhere.
Skyla moves into the home of a dead girl popular and loved by all around and she's freakin' jealous of the deal girl. She practically jumps in and says I'm better than the dead girl, realize this now and we wont have any problems. Vain little brat. She becomes bestfriends with the dead girls bestfriend and though nice at the surface she's a total bitch to her in thoughts. She hardly listens to what the girl is saying while greiving or anything else. She also jumps in and crushes on the old boyfriend of the dead girl. He hardly seems to be grieving the dead girl anymore but she is jealous of his relationship with the dead girl. That's like meeting someone and hating their past but holding it against them when you are completely happy with who they are now with you. Lame and selfish. Not everything is about you, Skyla, there were other girls there before you. Yes, sorry, even a dead girl. Too bad she doesn't realize what she's doing to the dead girl is what her stepdad is doing to her father. Hypocrite.
I felt like I was reading a 12 year olds diary when reading this. Ugh. You know when your listening to a cd and singing along when the cd keeps skipping, jumping from the middle of one verse to the chorus and you get so frustrated with trying to keep up and get the right word? If you like that you will love Ethereal. I'm on page 57 as of right now and the dialog is horrible. Anytime someone talks I find myself once again rolling my eyes or laughing at the fake conversations. Blech.
Although I can say that she is smart in not letting Logan cheat on her just to gain acsess to the dead girls diary. Logan seems like he just wants to have his cake and eat it too. I found myself favoring Gage but they are both pretty weird.
I am curious when Gage says Skyla and him are going to marry if it is all a fascade for her to be with Logan under the radar?
And what about Skyla's mom? Angel? She must be but she acts like Tad's full time slave. What kind of Celestreal being would put up with that? And what is the hundreds of dollars and news clippings?
Somethings that might make this series better?
1. For Skyla to mature.
2. Logan to stop being so forgiving and not to come crawling back within five seconds of screwing up.
3. More Gage.
4. Situations and conversations more realistic. Maybe its the way its described but so not believeable.
5. Get rid of Tad. Ugh, the guy is anal.
6. Humor.
I'm sure there is more to add to the list but I would rather read something new than dwell on this book any longer.
Do angels walk the Earth? They do on Paragon Island. For two years Skyla Messenger has believed she lost her father to a horrible car accident. Now she’s not so sure.
Her mother has remarried to a man Skyla is not all that crazy about. She and her sister and new step siblings are being uprooted and relocated from sunny LA, California to dreary Paragon Island. Skyla finds she doesn’t mind the constant rain and fog of the island, it better reflects her mood since her father died.
When she arrives at her new home in Paragon she is greeted by Brielle, the girl next store, who just so happens to be the best friend of the dead girl who used to live in her new home. This is when Skyla’s life begins to turn upside down. Life as she knew it is not what she once believed. Brielle introduces Skyla to Logan and Gage. Skyla is instantly drawn to the boys, especially Logan and as time passes she learns the connection she feels to them may be more than just feelings. Logan and Gage are angels and they believe Skyla is one of them. There are different types of angels with different blood lines, so to speak. Each type of angel possesses different powers and abilities. It would seem that some angels are nicer than others and Skyla suddenly finds herself in danger. She begins to wonder whether her father’s death was really an accident.
As the days pass Skyla finds herself falling in love with Logan, wanted by Gage, haunted by the dead girl who used to sleep in her bedroom and being stalked by angels who prefer she’d go away for good.
Addison Moore is a genius. Once I picked up this book I could barely put it down. When I had to put it down I found myself contemplating the plot. What would Skyla do next? When would Logan tell her the whole story? The suspense builds as the story progresses. It draws you in and captures your attention completely making difficult to focus on anything else. The characters in this book are as different as the teenagers and parents we all know. Some are beautiful. Some are strong. Some are quirky. They are all unique and propelled by their own desires. The language is simple and to the point while still being very descriptive of environment, action and emotion. I loved this book and can’t wait until the next installment. It’s one of the best stories I’ve read recently and I would place it on the bestseller shelf with out hesitation.
There was so many things wrong with this book!! I'm sorry, I am not going to be nice about this review. I am sorry to the author because she added me as a friend..but I am not going to stop myself over this.. I NEED to vent. I can tolerate a LOT of crap in my day .. But honestly this was one of the worst YA books , I've EVER read. I'm not saying, I could do much better. But NO! I can't help it. It was almost like, the author decided to sit herself down and watch all the teen movies. She picked and choosed which was the worst and put them in her characters. I was actually YELLING at Skyla for being such a stupid person. Example..off the top of my head.. Gage tells her that she is going to merry him. Then she decideds that it is fact rather then fiction. She is so stupid that she decideds to trust, a boy that she had just met. Lets not even get into BRIELLE (or whatever) I mean WHAT a SLUT. She's at the party that Skyla throws and sleeps with a guy in her room. Then the next day Drake (Skyla's step brother) comes and she sleeps with him... the morning after! I mean, no mention of a hang over??? ECK. Plus if you are going to have parents in YA book, don't have them leave town every weekend .so you can further the plot. It seemed like they just interfered with plot development. Should have kept them out the way most YA books do. Not to mention that, Skyla's mother gives the worst advice ever, PLAY HARD TO GET? What? and you wonder why Skyla ends up so messed up? and Logan ..he completely lack's character. He's so BORING. LIke snooze.. I can't belive there was no cemictry between Skyla and Logan. I found the only likeable character was Gage and even then meh...
all in all It wasn't even worth the 99 cents I paid on my kindle.
I mean how OLD is Melissa and Mia supposed to be?? Why is she allowed to get away with throwing a party?
This book had so much potential, could have bee soooo much more. But it wasn't. Worth the 71p but it seemed the book was empty, or the characters had no emotion, she was making out with two cousins and it didnt really seem to be an issue, time travelling and getting chased and kidnapped which seemed to be solved by a kiss. Really? A kiss the reader can't really savour because its more "he placed his lips on mine" All i can say is this must be some mind shattering kiss.
Then theres the fact that she's full blooded and yet the others are stronger, ok i get she's a scaredy ca,t which i cant stand by the way, she has so much potential and yet she needs other people to save her ughh. lets hope she toughens up in the next book, then again i will only be reading because of Gage, i dont if i will actually buy it or borrow someone else's kindle. Gage...sigh he seems the best Bree is a Hoe, seems to "willing" and Drake is well there was almost insightful moment when he had a feeling of "foreboding"
Sometimes in the book i found the main character to do irrational things like burst her bothers bubble yeah sibling rivalry and all but seriously i wouldn't blame him if he backhanded her...moving on. The characters were under developed some parts too emotionally detached and the parents a bit well OTT. The two little sisters or the brother might make a good story.
I bought this book and read the first page and put my kindle down for a few days. Story: there's this girl moving into a house and on the first page is a dramatic announcement that the previous girl living in the house was murdered. (Sorry Addison--but I had to roll my eyes!)
A day or two later when I DID read past the first few pages, my "real life" outside of Skyla, Logan and Gage became completely suspended! I stayed up all night reading through the first 3 books!!
Addison Moore's has a great talent for angsty, teen drama. She likes to triangulate her characters and I got totally sucked into cheering for some characters and fuming with anger at others.
Skyla, the main character, is just a girl. She isn't some powerless, helpless girl in need of a savior and she's also not a brute, tom boyish girl that constantly needs to prove her self. (It seems a lot of paranormal YA authors feel they need to go to extremes).
Addison's ability to pull my loyalty from one character to another in a matter of pages, is unmet.I'm not even sure who I'm routing for at this point, but I'll read the series to the end to find out.
I LOVE this book series! Don't get me wrong- I am an avid reader, not simply someone who picks the "easy reads", nor am I one of those Twilight junkies who simply crave a little romantic and paranormal drama from a story. No, I like to be able to connect with the story and the characters. I have read a great deal into this series, and I do admit the story becomes sluggish and boring after a few (seven) books. But up until then, I was constantly hooked. I got through a book or two a day, and simply couldn't stop. It was an addiction. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you what the book is about, just go read it! If you don't like it, then fine. But give it a try at least. The story is fresh, the characters are real and very relate-able, and the guys- to die for! Gosh, that ever prevalent inner turmoil over Logan and Gage made my head spin and my heart was torn, constantly! In fact, it still is! These books made me laugh, cry, and even yell out in frustration. A roller coaster of emotion that I would gladly ride again and again.
Just so you all know, this review is not going to be very long. Because, I loved this book so much, I immediately bought book number two right after I finished this one. Because Addison Moore left me with such a cliff hanger I could not not buy book number two after that. In fact, I finished book number two before I even wrote this.
From twists and turns to amazingly swoon-worthy boys and relationships this book has it all. I did not know what was going to happen next from page to page, and I was just so into this book I could not put it down. I loved the characters and the plot was amazing. Addison Moore had me on the edge of my seat the whole book.
And like I said, it ends all too fast and you HAVE to buy book number two after that. You MUST know what happens next.
